John Guanu

CHERRY VALLEY — John Guanu, 82, of Cherry Valley passed away Friday, Aug. 26, 2005, while doing what he loved the most, walking.

He was born June 7, 1923, in Albany, the son of Greek immigrants Anna Bouras and George Guanu.

He graduated from Philip Schuyler High School in Albany and enlisted in the Army Air Corps in December 1941. He served in World War II from 1941-1945, in the Army Air Corps as a tail gunner on various B-24 aircraft including the "Squaw" and the "Sneezie" and participated in both the North African and European campaigns, including one of the war’s most daring air raids, on Hitler’s oil fields in Ploesti, Rumania, for which he received the Distinguished Flying Cross.

John was married to Shirley Mason Dutcher on Aug. 4, 1946, in Cherry Valley.

He was a resident of Cherry Valley for more than 40 years and served for various terms as the Town and Village Justice, was a member of the Fire Department and Ambulance Squad, the American Legion, and the Cherry Valley Fish and Game Club.

He worked as a designer at General Electric in Schenectady for 37 years and at various other jobs during his retirement.

John had a love of the outdoors, including working in his garden, on his old house, and walking his little dog, Maggie, actually carrying her at times during the winter.

He also loved spending time with family and friends, and enjoyed getting into debates on politics and sports.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Shirley Mason Dutcher Guanu; his son, George Guanu of Oneonta; his daughter, Christine Steinhauser and husband, Charles Steinhauser of Westford, Mass.; his son, Seth Guanu of Arlington, Va.; his grandchildren, Chadd, Kevin and Kayla Steinhauser of Westford; his beloved dog, Maggie; sister, Alexandra Soulis and husband, Peter Soulis of Albany; sister, Catherine and husband, Christopher Vavura of Albany; brother-in-law, Loring Dutcher and wife, Doris Dutcher of Fort Plain; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as many dear friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2005, at the First Presbyterian Church, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Ron Fralick officiating.

Committal and burial, with an American Legion Service by Cherry Valley American Legion Post No. 1360, will follow in the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Cherry Valley.

Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley with a Cherry Valley Firemen’s Memorial Service at 8 p.m.

Contributions in John’s memory may be made to the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society or the SPCA.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Charles Rynkiewicz

ONEONTA — Charles Anthony Rynkiewicz Jr., 63, of Oneonta passed away Aug. 27, 2005, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

He was born May 31, 1942, the son of Charles Sr. and Wanda (Skonieczski) Rynkiewicz.

He married Cindy Chandler in Oneonta on Dec. 4, 2004.

Charles was self-employed as a contractor in the construction industry and owner of Cornerstone Property Services, Inc.

He was a member of the Elks Club and the No Name Gang Draft Horse Club. He enjoyed working with his draft horses and carpentry. His work was his hobby as he loved working with his hands.

He is survived by his wife, Cindy, of Oneonta; his son, Michael Rynkiewicz and Mary Wilson of East Meredith, and their children, Bradley Wilson and Morgan Rynkiewicz; and his daughter, Linda and her husband, Brian Fisher, of East Meredith, and their children, Korey and Jacob Fisher; his children’s mother, Sandra Rynkiewicz; along with several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and his extended family at Cornerstone Property Services, Inc.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2005, in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Elliot Oaks, officiating. Burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery in Delhi.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Matthew Mellott

GRAND GORGE — Matthew Mellott, 24, of Grand Gorge passed away Friday, Aug. 26, 2005, in the town of Gilboa.

He was born Oct. 6, 1980, in Walton, the son of Robert and Karen (Moody) Mellott.

He married Danielle Bessell on Aug. 10, 2002.

A lifelong area resident, Matthew graduated from Gilbertsville-Mount Upton Central School in the Class of 1999.

At the time of his death, he was employed at Wissahickon Spring Water Company in Davenport, but he had previously worked at the Ridge Box Factory, Oneonta, and Mallinckrodt/TYCO Inc., Hobart.

A devoted husband, father, son and brother, he was a NASCAR fan and enjoyed collecting baseball cards.

He is survived by his wife, Danielle; and two daughters, Natasha, 8 years old, and Aezlyn, 2 years old, at home in Grand Gorge; his mother and father, Robert and Karen Mellott of Gilbertsville; a sister, Cheryl Mellott, Gilbertsville; maternal grandmother, Sandra Moody, Delhi; paternal grandparents, Vince and Mary Trimbell, Bovina, and Robert Mellott, Elizabethtown, Pa.; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

His maternal grandfather, Elden Moody predeceased him in 1992.

Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2005, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with the Rev. Bert More officiating.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005, at the funeral home. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Burial will follow the service in Walton Cemetery, Walton.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Grand Gorge or Stamford Emergency Squads.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

George J. Hall

GOODYEAR LAKE — George J. "Tipper" Hall, 81, of Goodyear Lake, Oneonta, and formerly of Highland Falls, passed away Friday, Aug. 26, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was a resident of Goodyear Lake for 18 years and was a former resident of Highland Falls for 63 years.

George was a retired supervisor of grounds and maintenance at USMA, West Point.

He was born Oct. 18, 1923, to the late George Hall and Mary Monagle Hall in Highland Falls.He was married to Ruth E. Lewis Hall.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II. He was a member of Highland Falls VFW Post No. 663.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth E. Lewis Hall, of Goodyear Lake, Oneonta; his sons, Dick W. Hall and wife, Susie, of Highland Falls, Michael J. Hall and wife, Debbie, of Oneonta; sister, Sister Barnabas Hall of Hawthorne; three grandchildren, Ken Hall, Kelly Hall and Brett Howard; and nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2005, at the William F. Hogan Funeral Home, 135 Main St., Highland Falls. Graveside services will be in the Peacedale Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. Jack Arlotta, officiating.

Contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by William F. Hogan Funeral Home, Highland Falls.

Dennis J. Minogue

McLEAN, Va. — Dennis Joseph Minogue, 48, of McLean, Va., passed away this week in New Orleans, La.

He was born May 11, 1957, the son of Joseph and Dorothy (Nader) Minogue.

He married Reyna Dillon on Aug. 4, 2005.

Dennis was a longtime Registered Investment Adviser, an investment newsletter publisher, and President of Minogue Investments in McLean. Dennis was a stock investor and was ranked No. 1 in Stock Index Futures Commodity Traders Association program in the U.S. both in 1995 and 1999. He established Wealth Excellence Investors in 2001.

He graduated from Ithaca High School in 1975 and from The George Washington University in 1980, where he played baseball for four years and served as captain of the team.

He is survived by his wife, Reyna, of McLean, Va.; his sister, Diane Minogue and her husband, John Borthwick of Washington, D.C.; his nieces, Claire and Cleo Borthwick of Washington, D.C., who loved him very much; his uncles, Albert S. Nader and John Minogue; and aunts, Julia N. Church and Jem Mitrano; and several other aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005, in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Joseph Benintende, pastor of St. Mary’s Church, officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 to 10 a.m. just before the service at which time the family will be in attendance.

Burial will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons, at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to SOS Children’s Villages USA, 1317 F Street Suite 550, NW, Washington, DC 20004.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

George A. Clegg

PATERSON, N.J. — George A. Clegg, 91, of Paterson died Friday.

Born in Paterson, he was a lifelong resident of Paterson.

He was a driver for P.D.S., Fairlawn, for 32 years before retiring in 1986. Before that he worked for U.P.S. in New York. He was a partner of the George Clegg and Sons Trucking Co. with his brothers.

Mr. Clegg was a retired member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local No. 177. He was also a member of the Wayne Elks for 34 years.

Mr. Clegg was a football player for the Paterson North Ends and an avid golfer.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral services in the Hartwick Cemetery, Hartwick, at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Festa Memorial Funeral Home, 111 Union Blvd., Totowa, NJ 07512.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Kidney Fund, 6110 Executive Blvd., Suite 1010, Rockville, MD 20852-9813 or Hartwick Fire Department, PO Box 86, Hartwick, NY 13348 would be appreciated.

Preceding him in death was his wife, Emma (nee Bartholf) Clegg; two brothers, Jack and Arthur Clegg; a sister, Elizabeth Clegg; and two grandchildren, Amanda and Philip Clegg.

Survivors include a very close companion Gert Cauda, who stood by George though his time of needs, which his family is very greatful for. He is also survived by a daughter and son-in-law Eileen Harry Bonfanti of Denville, N.J.; and a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Deborah Clegg of Hartwick. He also is survived by four grandsons; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Festa Memorial Funeral Home, 111 Union Blvd., Totowa is in charge of arrangements.

Benjamin M. Johns

MANLIUS — Benjamin M. Johns, 78, of Manlius died unexpectedly Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, at home.

Born in Wilmington, Del., he was a graduate of DuPont High School and attended Andover Academy and Princeton University.

He served with the United States Army during World War II.

He resided in Oneonta before moving to the Fayetteville-Manlius area in 1963.

He was in the custom kitchen design industry for more than 50 years.

Mr. Johns was a former member of the Oneonta Country Club and a member of the Cavalry Club for the past 40 years. He was an avid golfer who enjoyed afternoons with his many golf and card-playing friends.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Katherine S. Johns; three children, Patricia (Jerry) Edsell, Michael (Chris) Johns and Susan (Geoff) Ziff, all of Manlius; a sister, Mary Johns Nesbitt of Oneonta; a brother, Willard Johns of Wilmington, Del.; and five grandchildren, Regan Shephard, Steve Ziff and Ben, Corey and Sam Johns.

Memorial services will be private.

Contributions may be made to the Manlius Fire Department, 1 Stickley Drive, Manlius, NY 13104.

Elmer M. Bond

WEST EXETER — Elmer M. Bond, 79, of Munson Road passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Aug. 28, 2005, in his home.

He was born Aug. 13, 1926, in Pulaski, son of the late Jessie and Blanche Wescott Bond. A lifelong area resident, he was raised and educated in Schuyler Lake.

An honorably discharged veteran of World War II, he had served in the United States Navy.

On July 22, 1948, he was united in marriage with Bertha Aplin in Beltsville, Md. A loving and devoted union of 50 years, she died March 8, 1999.

Mr. Bond was a builder by trade. He had owned and operated Bond Construction Company in West Exeter and had built many homes in the New Hartford area. He retired in 1989 after 35 years of being in business.

In his leisure time he enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He was a former member of the Schuyler Lake Fire Department and Hugick, Purcell & Shepard American Legion Post No. 616, Richfield Springs.

Many of Elmer’s happiest moments were when he was surrounded by his many friends and family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.

Surviving him are two sons, Philip Bond Sr. and Kenneth and his wife, Elizabeth Bond, all of West Exeter; two daughters, Wanda and her husband, Richard Inman, of Mohawk, and Linda Bond and her companion, Robert Graepel, of Richfield Springs; one sister, Evie and her husband, Harry Barber, of Ilion; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents and wife, Bertha, four brothers and four sisters preceded him in death.

Funeral service will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs. The Rev. John Young will officiate. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Mr. Bond will be laid to rest with his wife in West Exeter Cemetery at 11 Thursday morning.

Expressions of sympathy may be made with donations to the West Exeter First Responders. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
