Nathaniel Bowers

COOPERSTOWN — Nathaniel Pendleton Bowers, 80, of Cooperstown died Sunday, Aug. 28, 2005, at The Otsego Manor, a place he had come to think of as his home because of the kind, considerate and understanding care he received there.

Penny, as he preferred to be called, was born April 19, 1925, in the borough of Manhattan, New York City. His father, Spotswood Dandridge Bowers, was a leading New York City lawyer who represented some of New York’s political elite, among them, Theodore Roosevelt.

Penny was proud that his father was not only one of the top ranked golf players in the country but also the New York state badminton and billiards champion as well as a nationally ranked contract bridge player.

On his father’s side, Penny could trace his lineage to 15th-century Wales, and he was a direct descendent of Alexander Spotswood, the first Colonial Governor of Virginia, and also of Martha Dandridge, who married President George Washington after the death of her first husband.

Penny’s mother, Marjorie Sampson Smith, was the granddaughter of Adm. William T. Sampson, a United States Naval hero of the Spanish American War. Through his mother’s side of the family, Penny could trace his lineage to the Campbell Clan of ninth-century Scotland.

Penny’s great-great-great-grandfather, Henry Bowers, received the land patent extending from current-day Bowerstown to very near Cherry Valley upon which his great-great-grandfather, John Myer Bowers, built the Bowers homestead "Lakelands" in 1804. Penny was listed in the New York Social Register.

Penny, one of six "Bowers Boys," resided at various times in New York City (4 East 77th St.) and Cooperstown (Lakelands and Woodside Hall) and later at "Skeet’s Retreat" in Cherry Valley.

He was educated at The Buckley School and The Dalton School in New York City, as well as at The Beasley School in Cooperstown. After his schooling, Penny made Cooperstown his permanent residence.

He faithfully served as the much-loved and ever-present sexton of Christ Episcopal Church from 1954 to 1990. At Penny’s retirement, the Rev. Canon George F. French mentioned Penny’s steadfast love for and unfailing service to his church. He commended Penny’s willingness and ability to undertake repairs of every nature and estimated that his skills had saved the church literally tens of thousands of dollars.

Penny and his former wife, Mary Anne Lamphere (Shaw) of Norwich, had one son, Nathaniel P. Bowers Jr. of Utica, who survives him. He is survived also by his brother, Sampson Pendleton Bowers Sr. of St. Helena, Calif., and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by four of his brothers, 2nd Lt. John Myer Bowers, AAC; Spotswood Dandridge Bowers Jr., Ph.D.; Roy Campbell Bowers; and Alexander Stewart Bowers.

A service of Holy Eucharist will be celebrated at Christ Church in Cooperstown at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 2, 2005, with the Rev. Samuel B. Abbott, rector, officiating.

Burial in the family grave site in Lakewood Cemetery will occur later in the fall.

In lieu of flowers, Penny’s family suggests that those who so desire make contributions in Penny’s memory to Christ Church, 69 Fair St., Cooperstown, NY 13326 designating that it be used for "building and maintenance purposes."

Arrangements are under the supervision of Tillapaugh Funeral Service of Cooperstown and Milford.
