Edward W. Wiltse

ST. JOHNSVILLE — Edward W. "Ed" Wiltse, 82, of 61 North Division St., St. Johnsville, and formerly a longtime Richfield Springs resident, passed away Sunday, Aug. 28, 2005, at Little Falls Hospital.

He was born March 13, 1923, in Columbia, the son of the late Jesse and Henrietta (Buddle) Wiltse, and was educated in Richfield Springs area schools.

His marriage to Norma Smith took place in Suffern on Feb. 25, 1947.

Mr. Wiltse was a World War II Army veteran, enlisting Dec. 4, 1942, and was honorably discharged April 5, 1946, with the rank of technical sergeant.

Ed was a cabinet maker by trade, and owned and operated his own carpentry business until his retirement in 1985.

A man devoted to his family, Ed proved himself as a loving and caring father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Ed was a hard-working man who in his spare time enjoyed building air boats and air sleds. But most of all, he loved to make people laugh with a good joke.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 58 years, Norma; three daughters, Nancy Carol Yerdon and companion Dean Hull of Burlington Flats, Patsy Schoff and husband Larry of St. Johnsville and Virginia Gage and husband Howard of St. Johnsville; five grandchildren, Sarah Seamon-Murphy and husband Charles of Nelliston, Kimberly Handy and husband Wayne of St. Johnsville, Todd Seamon and fiancee Michele of Richfield Springs, Kathrine Gage and fiance Jerry Herring of Canajoharie and Samantha Gage of St. Johnsville; eight great-grandchildren, Noah Handy, Jonathan Handy, Grace Handy, Jacob Handy, Rodney Seamon, Gabrielle Murphy, Julia Herring and Thomas Herring; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Monty J. Seamon; a brother, Gilbert Wiltse; and a sister, Irene Kelly.

In keeping with Ed’s wishes, cremation will take place under the direction of the Enea Family Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville.

The family will be receiving friends and relatives for a celebration of Ed’s life from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, 2005, at the Vets Club on Lake Street, Richfield Springs.

Interment will be held at the convenience of the family.

Geraldine Bedford

ONEONTA — Geraldine A. Bedford, 76, of Oneonta passed away Sunday, Aug. 28, 2005, at the Oneonta Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Facility.

She was born Aug. 4, 1929, in Oneonta, the daughter of Earl and Leah (Bouton) Condon.

She married Raymond R. Bedford on May 9, 1959.

Gerry retired in 1985 from the Oneonta Savings and Loan, where she was a customer service representative for nine years.

She was a member of the Elm Park Methodist Church and for more than 20 years was an AVON representative.

She is survived by her husband, Raymond R. Bedford of Oneonta; her children, Debra Cooke of Norwich and Kirk (Michelle) Bedford of Oneonta; a stepson, Steven Bedford of Cohoes; a granddaughter, Morgan Bedford of Oneonta; as well as two aunts, Irene Rider and Pauline Burrows of Hobart.

A service to celebrate the life of Geraldine will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell, pastor of the Elm Park Methodist Church, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

John F. Alves

MASONVILLE — John F. Alves, 82, of Masonville passed away Sunday, Aug. 28, 2005, at the Bridgewater Center in Binghamton.

He was born Sept. 9, 1922, son of the late Hibert and Charlotte Surrey Alves in Boston, Mass.

John served his country in the United States Army and was honorably discharged.

Mr. Alves was employed by E.C.D. of Bendix in Sidney when he retired.

He is survived by family and friends.

Friends may call from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Robert Howard of the Masonville Federated Church officiating.

Burial will be in Saratoga National Cemetery at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2005.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Delaware Valley Humane Society, 101 East Main St., Sidney, NY 13838.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

Esther C. Stein

DeLANCEY — Esther C. Stein, 80, of DeLancey passed away peacefully Wednesday evening, Aug. 31, 2005, at O’Connor Hospital, Delhi.

The youngest of 12 children of Arthur L. and Catherine M. (Smith) Cook, she was born March 17, 1925, in Oak Hill. She grew up on the family farm in Potter Hollow, graduated from Greenville High School and married Walter H. Stein on May 24, 1947, in "The Little Church Around the Corner" in New York City, a union of almost 55 years until his death March 11, 2002.

A 52-year former Delhi resident, in earlier years Esther was a switchboard operator for Delhi Telephone Co., and, subsequently, an examiner for Delaware County Department of Social Services, until retirement.

Civically involved, she had been active in the Home Bureau, the Delhi Sesquicentennial Committee (1971) and the Delaware County Historical Association. She also served as a Democratic election inspector.

Esther was an avid reader, participated in frequent tours with her husband, enjoyed knitting and crafts, maintained a collection of baskets and angels, and derived satisfaction from her flower garden.

She moved to DeLancey in 1999 and had much appreciation for the kindness shown to her by friends and neighbors.

Surviving are her children, Stephen and his wife, Debbie Stein, of DeLancey, and children, Jeff, Kyle and Josh; Bradford Stein and children, Madia and Colin, of Santa Fe, N.M.; Catherine and her husband, Andy Hewitt, and children, Carrie and Jason, of Lake Delaware; Kevin Stein and sons, Colin and Thomas, of Kinderhook; brothers-in-law and their wives, Charles and Marie Stein of Delhi and Ralph and Constance Stein of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and nieces and nephews, including Phyllis Beechert of Greenville.

The family will not be in attendance, however, friends may call Sunday afternoon and evening at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, where funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 5. The Rev. Bert More will officiate, and private burial will be in the Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Memorial contributions to Catskill Area Hospice will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Stephen H. Gutliph

HAMDEN — Stephen H. Gutliph, 55, of Hamden died Monday, Sept. 5, 2005, in Hamden.

He was born March 27, 1950, in Glens Falls, the son of Warren "Buzz" and Mabel (Worden) Gutliph. His parents both predeceased him.

Growing up in DeLancey, Stephen graduated from Delaware Academy and Central School in 1968. He attended St. Petersburg Jr. College from 1981 to 1983, and also took numerous courses pertaining to code enforcement at the New York State Fire Academy from 1989 to 1990. He later became a NYS certified code enforcement officer, ranked No. 1 in the state at the time.

Stephen was an extremely talented custom cabinetmaker and carpenter, a trade he learned from his uncle, Howard Worden.

He moved to Pinellas Park, Fla., and ran his own construction business, S & H Construction, as a licensed contractor.

While in Florida, he married Denise J. Grudzinski on Dec. 31, 1983. They relocated to New York in 1985, and continued his construction business until health issues caused him to make a career change. He was then employed as a certified NYS code enforcement officer for the towns of Delhi, Hamden and Colchester.

Stephen started working for the NYSDEP in October 1992, and continued working there until the time of his death.

He managed to enjoy his passion for woodworking on a limited basis as Steve’s Custom Woodworking. He was exceptionally talented at restoring antiques and building reproductions. He was a smart person who could "fix anything."

He enjoyed good food, family and friends.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and in his younger years, coon hunting and trapping, and eventually passed this knowledge and love of hunting to his son. Stephen was a devoted Earnhardt fan of NASCAR racing and collected woodworking planes.

He and his wife had bred Boxer dogs for the past 25 years. Stephen enjoyed working along with his wife in her Wildlife Rehabilitation Program. He enjoyed spending time working on projects with his son, be it 4-H, dirt bikes, cars or "just hangin’." He helped many Cub Scouts build their pinewood derby cars along with building wood projects for Scouts and 4-H. He held the rank of Life Scout in the Boy Scouts of America.

Surviving are his wife of 22 years, Denise, and their son, Jonathon Craig (JC) of Hamden; mother-in-law, Helen Palenski of DeLancey; brother-in-law, Robert Szulwach and his wife, Margaret, of Brockport, their sons, Kevin, Keith, Christopher and his wife, Sarah; brothers, Peter and his wife, Michelle, and their daughter, Claire of DeLancey; Kevin and his wife, Carol, and their daughters, Mabel and Amanda of DeLancey; Tim and his children, Timmy and Jessica; sister, Karen and her husband, Glenn Graves; a sister, Dr. JoAnn Gutliph and her husband, Robert Bohn, and their sons, Will, Matthew and Robbie; along with several other relatives. Surviving also is his best friend, Steve Stein; and work companion, Joe Panioli.

Stephen took great pride in everything he did. He will be greatly missed by all, and definitely made the world a better place with his vast contributions.

Friends are invited to call at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, beginning at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9, 2005, where some of the family will be in attendance from 2 to 4 p.m. The rest of the family will begin visiting from 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, at the DeLancey United Presbyterian Church, DeLancey with the Rev. Bert More officiating.

Burial will take place at the convenience of the family.

Contributions are asked to be made to the Lewis Engine Company (Hamden Fire Department), Hamden, NY 13782 in loving memory of Stephen H. Gutliph.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Gunhild S. Klem

ONEONTA — A service of remembrance for Gunhild Silius Klem, 74, who died Aug. 29, 2005, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Lynn Ash officiating.

Burial will follow in the Bloomville Cemetery, Bloomville.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Irene B. Weaver

QUEENSBURY — Mrs. Irene B. Weaver, 80, formerly of South Valley, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005, at Eden Park Nursing Home, Cobleskill.

She was born Jan. 14, 1925, in Cooperstown, the daughter of Louis M. and Lottie E. (Vanderwerker) Brazie.

She attended school in Cobleskill, graduating with the class of 1942. She attended Oneonta State Teachers College and taught school at Cherry Valley, West Winfield, Chittenango, Warrensberg, Lake George, Queensbury and Button.

She married Durwood Weaver in 1946 in Richfield. He predeceased her.

Irene was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Glens Falls.

She enjoyed going to auctions; collecting antiques, many of which she refinished; and gardening.

She spent time in Arizona and at their camp on Otsego Lake.

In the early 1970s she and her husband purchased the historic Sanford Home on Ridge Road. They spent many years renovating and restoring it and it became a "Labor of Love."

She is survived by a brother, Harold Brazie of Cherry Valley; three nephews, Rodney Brazie of Cherry Valley, Randy Brazie of Dallas, Texas, and Robbie Brazie of Boise, Idaho; good friends, Beverly Maine of Queensbury, Debbie and John Clynes and their daughters, Meredith and Carolyn, of Glens Falls.

Funeral services will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley. Services and committal in Pine View Cemetery, Queensbury, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, with burial to follow.

Contributions in Mrs. Weaver’s memory may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Glens Falls, NY.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Yvonne A. Goodhill

ONEONTA — Yvonne Anne Goodhill, 82, of Oneonta died Sept. 6, 2005, at her home surrounded by family.

She was born July 6, 1923, in Jersey City, N.J., the daughter of Joseph and Anna Montmarquet.

She married Ralph Alexander Goodhill during the Second World War, at the Little Church Around the Corner in New York City. He predeceased her in January 2002.

Mrs. Goodhill enjoyed being a parent, first and foremost. An excellent listener, her joy was in communicating family news and in making friends wherever she went.

She devoted a good part of her life to volunteer work before and after working as a market research field supervisor for Yankelovich, Skelly and White.

The Goodhills were residents of North Caldwell, N.J., for more than 70 years.

Yvonne served as town historian for many years, and her love of local history motivated the launch of the North Caldwell Historical Society before retiring to Oneonta in 2000.

After her husband’s death, she served on the leadership council for the local Alzheimer’s Association chapter, and on the board of directors of the Albany office of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Mrs. Goodhill was honored at a reception in Albany as a New York State Woman of Distinction by Senator James Seward in 2004, in recognition of her volunteer work. The Senate’s "Woman of Distinction" program was created to honor New York women who exemplify personal excellence, or whose achievements or acts of courage, selflessness or perseverance serve as examples to all New Yorkers.

She is survived by her sons, James Montmarquet and his wife, Cynthia, of Nashville, Tenn., Douglas Goodhill of Oneonta, and Roger Goodhill and his wife, Rachel, of Beacon; her daughter, Anne Gohorel and her husband, John, of Delhi; her cousin, Arlynne Winkler and her husband, Karl, of Troy; and six grandchildren.

An open house in celebration of her life will be at her home at 1 Brigham Road in Oneonta from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, 2005.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to Catskill Area Hospice, 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta NY 13820, or to the local Alzheimer’s Association Leatherstocking Region Office, 243 Chestnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.
