Ada Anna Flynn

ONEONTA — Ada Anna (Steenrod) (Sullivan) Flynn, 96, of Oneonta passed away Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2005, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born April 19, 1909, in Wells Bridge, the daughter of Henry Curtis and Leora Mae (Hopkins) Steenrod.

Ada was twice married, first to George David Sullivan on May 5, 1925, in Otego. Mr. Sullivan predeceased her Oct. 5, 1948, in Oneonta. Then on June 5, 1951, Ada married William Flynn in Oneonta. Mr. Flynn predeceased her Aug. 25, 1954, in Oneonta.

Ada worked at the MICA Plant on Dietz Street during World War II as well as the dress factories in Oneonta and the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in the housekeeping department until her retirement in 1974.

She enjoyed crocheting. Ada was a member of the Emmons United Methodist Church and also attended the Elm Park United Methodist Church.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, David George and Evelyn Sullivan of Otego; one daughter, Leona (Sullivan) Crider of Oneonta; four grandsons and their spouses, Wayne R. and Michelle Crider of Redhook, Thomas G. Crider of Las Vegas, Nev., Michael D. Sullivan of Otego and Glenn A. and Wendy Sullivan of Oneonta; one granddaughter, Donna Crider of Corning; six great-grandchildren and their spouses, Jeremy Sullivan of Syracuse, Kevin and Valerie Crider of Queensbury, Kimberly (Crider) and Christopher Shaver of Gansevoort, Lorin (Crider) and James Whorf of Glens Falls, Holly Ann Grant and her fiance, Kenneth Marsh, of Tonawanda and Kelly Leigh Grant of Ithaca; four great-great-grandchildren, Courtney Marie and Aaron Michael Whorf of Glens Falls and Emily Jayne and Rachel Lorin Shaver of Gansevoort; two sisters-in-law, Ella Steenrod and Evelyn Steenrod, both of A.O. Fox Nursing Home; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Ada was predeceased by one son-in-law, Robert Wayne Crider; four brothers, Stewart and Emmons Steenrod, George Emmory and Howard Elwood; and five sisters, Sara Steenrod, Irene Colegrove, Albertina Barnwell, Irma Sullivan and Neva Mae Utter.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell, pastor of the Elm Park United Methodist Church, Oneonta, officiating. Burial will follow in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Calling hours will be held from 9 a.m. to service time at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc., 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820 or to the A.O. Fox Nursing Home Activities Fund, 1 Norton Ave., Oneonta, NY 13820 in loving memory of Ada Anna Flynn.

The family of Ada Anna Flynn would like to extend a special thank you to the staff and doctors at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home, especially Unit 3 for their care and compassion that they gave to Ada.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Mildred Patrick

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Mildred "Myra" Patrick, 76, of Lake Street, passed away Friday night, Sept. 9, 2005, in Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

She was born May 27, 1929, in Edmeston, daughter of the late Charles and Nora Caulder Marriott.

A lifelong Richfield Springs resident, she was educated in Richfield Springs schools.

On May 31, 1970, she married James K. Patrick in the Richfield Springs United Methodist Church.

Myra’s life was her home and family. She was happiest when she was surrounded by her many friends and family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She had a strong sense of community. She was a member of the Richfield Springs Board of Elections, the Richfield Springs Volunteer Fire Department, and also the Ladies Auxiliary, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, the Disabled American Veterans Ladies Auxiliary and the Richfield Springs Lions Club.

She was a friend to many and will never be forgotten.

Surviving are her loving husband of 35 years, James; six sons Donald Marriott of Monticello, Rudy Marriott, Richard Marriott and his companion, Sue Bunce, Robert Marriott and his wife, Kathleen, all of Richfield Springs, Randy and his wife, Lisa, Patrick of Terra Haute, Ind., and Michael Patrick of Richfield Springs; three daughters, Carol and her husband, Jack, Miller, Susan Wood and her companion, Mitch Bulger, and Debra LaVeck and her companion, Kenny Beopple, all of Richfield Springs.

Also, two brothers, Warren and his wife, Marian, Marriott of West Winfield, and John and his wife, Barbara, Marriott of Leonardsville; seven sisters, Dorothy Griffith of Leonardsville, Helen "Emma" O’Connor and Frances Marriott, both of Richfield Springs, Louise Holmes of Unadilla Forks, Mary "Eleanor" and her husband, James, Phillips of Madison, Margaret "Iva" and her husband, Frank, Lewis of Waterville, and Beverly and her husband, Joseph, Szewczyk of Sauquoit; 27 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her parents, a son, David Marriott, four brothers, William, Melvin, Owen and Frank Marriott, and a sister, Lorraine Marriott, preceded her in death.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs. Pastor Alan Miller of the Richfield Springs Bible Church will officiate.

The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today. Members of the Richfield Springs Volunteer Fire Department are asked to meet at the funeral home at 7 p.m. today for services.

Memorial donations may be made to the Richfield Springs Volunteer Fire Department or the Catskill Area Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Theresa Butts

ONEONTA — Theresa Mereness Butts, 95, of Maryland passed away Friday, Sept. 9, 2005, at the Folts Home in Herkimer.

She was born Feb. 24, 1910, one of 11 children of William E. and Clara (Day) Mereness, in the town of Decatur.

Theresa married Kenneth G. Butts on Aug. 28, 1939. Mr. Butts predeceased her June 25, 1986. They had one infant daughter, Patricia Ann Butts, who died at birth Dec. 24, 1940.

She graduated from Worcester High School with the class of 1928 and then from Crouse Irving Hospital in 1931 with a registered nursing degree.

Theresa was employed at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital from August 1931 until January 1940, doing general duty nursing. From 1940 until 1972, she was a private duty nurse at the hospital and also in the Oneonta area.

Theresa enjoyed camping, canoeing, bowling, gardening and baking. She also counted birds for the Audubon Society and the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology in Ithaca.

She was a member of the Crouse Irving Hospital Nursing Alumni and a member of the National Audubon Society.

Theresa is survived by her nieces and their husbands, Virginia Abresch of Ronkonkoma, Karen and David Curlis of Argyle, Gail and Hugh Cauthers of Goshen, Christine and Richard Shypski of Richfield Springs, Diane and Gary Glasso of Kirkville and Rhonda and Richard Jennings of Worcester; as well as several other nieces, nephews, great-nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by five brothers, Maurice, Elmer, Gordon, Kenneth and Ivan Mereness, five sisters, Velma Ryder, Neva Elmore, Alta Prindle, Retta Mereness and Dora Hill.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, 2005, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, pastor of the Second Baptist Church of Worcester, officiating.

Burial will follow in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to either the Mereness Scholarship Fund at Worcester Central School, Worcester, NY 12197 or to the Milford Emergency Squad, Milford, NY 13807 in loving memory of Theresa Mereness Butts.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Catherine P. Davis

SOUTH KORTRIGHT — Catherine Priscilla Davis, 87, of Stockton, Calif., died Aug. 24, 2005, in Stockton.

Born Dec. 16, 1917, in Delhi, she moved to Stockton in 1953 to serve as dean of women at University of the Pacific. She retired in 1985, as associate dean of students.

In retirement, Miss Davis volunteered at the university, the Tully Knoles School, People to People International, the Delta Humane Society and the Haggin Museum. In recognition of her work in education, she received a Susan B. Anthony Woman of Achievement Award from the San Joaquin County Commission on the Status of Women in 2003.

She was affiliated with Tau Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, Phi Delta Theta, Chapter F8 of the PEO Sisterhood and the American Association of University Women.

Miss Davis graduated from Hartwick College and began her career teaching high school history. After receiving a master’s degree from Syracuse University, she was in charge of residences and the student union at SUNY Plattsburgh before moving to Stockton.

She is survived by her brother-in-law, Harold A. Stevens of Roses Brook Road, South Kortright; a niece, Susan Fabel (Jon) of Webster; a nephew, Thomas Stevens (Megan) of Leverett, Mass.; and two great-nieces, Kaitlin and Marissa Fabel.

She was predeceased by her sister, Louisa D. Stevens.

Interment will be in Valley View Cemetery, Roses Brook Road, at the convenience of the family.

Local arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

John M. Gannon

DELHI — John M. Gannon, 61, of Delhi passed away Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005.

Born Sept. 23, 1943, in Nassau County, he was the son of the late Edward and Mary (Fitzmaurice) Gannon.

He married the late Joyce (Messel) Gannon on May 8, 1971. She died Oct. 30, 1999.

Mr. Gannon was employed at Breakey Motors, Walton.

Formerly of Westbury, Long Island, he served as captain of the Westbury Volunteer Fire Department and after moving to Delhi belonged to the Delhi Fire Department from 1983-1990. He also was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Delhi.

He is survived by a daughter, Cynthia, and her husband, Peter Bauman, Rochester; two grandchildren, Nicholas Bauman and Brenna Bauman, Rochester; three sisters, Helen Abbatiello, Westbury, Long Island, Bridgid Hand, Bellmore, Long Island, Mary Piscitelli, Westbury, Long Island; and a brother, Joe Gannon of Copiague, Long Island; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2005, in St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Delhi, with Father Flannery as celebrant.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2005, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Burial will follow the service in Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Dillon Jeffrey Bott

ONEONTA — Dillon Jeffrey Bott, 22, of Oneonta died suddenly Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, at the home of a friend.

Born March 2, 1983, Dillon attended Center Street Elementary School and Oneonta High School.

He worked at Elena’s Bakery and Deli, at the Autumn Cafe and most recently at the Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities at Homer Folks.

He is survived by his parents, Keith Bott and Celia Reed, and his sister, Margaret; his grandmothers, Martha Bott and Constance Reed, both of Oneonta; by his aunt, Debbie; and cousins, Amie and Kevin Huebner of Collingswood, N.J.; his uncle, Jeffrey Bott, and aunt Ginny Miller; and cousins, Marcelle and Jack of Northampton, Mass. He also leaves many good friends, especially, Eric Johnson.

Dillon loved music, dancing and cooking.

He was devoted to his friends far and near, and will be missed by many.

Services will be announced at a later date.

Contributions may be made, in lieu of flowers, to the American Red Cross, Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief, 493 Chestnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or to the charity of choice.

The Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home at 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, is serving the family.

Chester Kucharski

ONEONTA — Chester S. Kucharski Sr., 86, passed away Friday, Sept. 9, 2005, at the Rome Hospital.

He was born Sept. 14, 1918, in South Bound Brook, N.J., the son of Ignancious and Josephine Kucharski.

Mr. Kucharski was a United States Army veteran serving in World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Nellie (Thompson) Kucharski; a son, Chester Kucharski Jr.; a grandson, Jason Kucharski; two great-grandchildren, Molly and Asher Kucharski; three sisters, Jennie Oswick, Helen Simko and Ann Olson; and several nieces and nephews.

Private services will be Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2005.

Interment with military honors will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

The Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home at 51 Dietz St., Oneonta is serving the family.

Mary M. Hinkley

GRAND GORGE — Mary M. Hinkley, 104, of Grand Gorge passed away Thursday, Sept. 15, 2005, at her home in Grand Gorge after a short illness.

Mary Elizabeth Morse Hinkley was born on the family farm in Vega on Jan. 20, 1901, the daughter of Chauncey and Anna (Dent) Morse.

Mary married Winfield S. Hinkley on Aug. 22, 1923. Her husband passed away Feb. 9, 1955.

She was a legal secretary for Arthur Bouton and Ralph Ives in Roxbury. She and her husband operated a dairy farm with his parents for six years in Meeker Hollow, Roxbury. She also assisted her husband in starting and operating a Ford Car Dealership, W.S. Hinkley and Sons in Grand Gorge in 1930.

Mary graduated from Roxbury High School in 1919, and the Albany Business School in 1920.

Mary was a member of the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church, Roxbury, and when it was active, she was a member of the Roxbury Eastern Star.

She enjoyed driving her Thunderbird, and spending winters in Singer Island and Riviera Beach, Fla.

Her hobbies included gardening, painting, quilting, bridge and writing in her daily journal.

Mary is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Winfield M. and Irene Hinkley, Grand Gorge; daughter-in-law, Jeannine Hinkley, Roxbury; grandchildren, Winfield S. and wife, Karen Hinkley, Grand Gorge, Edward Hinkley, Grand Gorge and Dee and Charles Guelli of Stewart, Fla., Tonya and Jerome Liberatore, Roxbury, Thomas M. Hinkley, Roxbury, Toni and Gary Smith, Margaretville, and Tyrone and Susan Hinkley, Roxbury; great-grandchildren, Winfield S. Hinkley Jr., Dominick Pucci, Kristi Pucci, Marlana and Spencer Hinkley, Janelle and Brent Guelli, Jerome and Alanna Liberatore, Lindsey and Brent Smith, and Jason and Alison Hinkley; seven great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harrison C. Morse and Lindon B. Morse, Roxbury; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary was predeceased by one son, Thomas E. Hinkley, in 1997.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, 2005, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 19, 2005, at the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church with the Rev. Richard A. Dykstra officiating.

Burial will be in Roxbury Cemetery, Roxbury.

In memory of Mary M. Hinkley, donations may be made to the Grand Gorge Rescue Squad or the Memorial Fund of the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church, Roxbury.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.
