Charles J. Schloupt

MORAVIA — Charles J. Schloupt, 82, of Moravia passed away Sept. 2, 2005, at home with his family at his side.

Charles was born Dec. 30, 1922, in Cohoes, the son of the late Herman and Lillian (Clairmont) Schloupt.

Charles served his country with the United States Army during World War II. He was a charter member of the Laurens American Legion.

He enjoyed sports, playing poker and golf.

He was employed by the D&H Railway and most recently by Hamelines Ice Cream.

Charles lived and raised his family in Laurens before moving to Cortland.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nora (Jacobsen) Schloupt; his daughters, Susan Kirk of Moravia and Renee Hibson (Jeffrey) of Windsor; his sons, Patrick Schloupt of Arizona and Jeffrey Schloupt (Linda) of Cortland; his brother, Raymond (Izetta) Schloupt of Laurens; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Charles was predeceased by his sister, Beatrice Halstead.

Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

Anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution in Charles’ name is asked to consider Hospice.

Gary R. Clum

FORT PLAIN — Gary R. Clum, 59, of Fort Plain and formerly of Walton, died Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2005, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam.

He was born June 7, 1946, in Walton, the son of Raymond H. and Ruth E. (Rutherford) Clum.

He worked for Advance Auto in Guilderland for a period of time. Gary was an avid stock car race fan. He enjoyed watching races at local tracks as well as NASCAR events.

He is survived by his sister, Nadine Kiestler and her husband, Russell, of Ripley, Tenn.; his aunts and uncles, Leonard and Helen Rutherford and Ronald and Pauline Clum of Walton; a great-nephew; and many cousins.

Gary was predeceased by his parents, as well as his niece, Kristen Kiestler.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, 2005, at the Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Home, 102 Delaware St., Walton, with John W. Truscott, commissioned lay preacher, officiating. Burial will be in the Walton Cemetery.

Friends may call at Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Home from 10 a.m. until the service time Saturday.

Arrangements are by Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Home of Walton.

Mary M. Long

ONEONTA — Mary M. Long, 95, of Oneonta passed away Thursday, Sept. 8, 2005, at the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Oneonta.

She was born June 3, 1910, in Dawson, Pa., the daughter of Wayne and Gladys Evelyn (Lint) Forsythe.

Mary married Joseph G. Long on April 20, 1935, in Laurens. Mr. Long predeceased her Sept. 10, 1968.

Mary was an LPN and worked for a period of time for Dr. Hans Wilk. She loved doing crafts. Mary was a member of the Oneonta Garden Club and also a member of the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta since December 1924.

Mary is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Joseph W. and Kathryn A. Long of Salem, Conn.; four granddaughters and their husbands, Jennifer and William Hull of Norwich, Conn., Kathleen and William Pitruzzello of Hebron, Conn., Margaret and David Candelori of Glastonbury, Conn., and Patricia and Alexander MacDonald of Brimfield, Mass.; six great-grandchildren, Alexander and Bethany Hull of Norwich, Conn., Nathan and Mary Pitruzzello of Hebron, Conn., and Claire Rose and Ann-Katherine Candelori of Glastonbury, Conn.; three nephews and their wives, Walton G. and Nancy G. Forsythe of Oneonta, John and Linda Long of Sidney and George and Joann Long of Garrattsville; four nieces and their husbands, MaryAnn and Clark Warner-Long of Fulton, and Joan Jordan of Rochester; and special friends, David and Dora Cooper of Oneonta, John and Carol Sawin of Oneonta and Dick and Ann Knudsen of Oneonta.

She was predeceased by one brother, Walton Forsythe, and one sister, Ruth Moak.

Funeral services were 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 12, 2005, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Thomas A. Clemow, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial followed in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery. Calling hours were 9 a.m. until service time at 10 a.m. Monday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820, in loving memory of Mary M. Long.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Dillon J. Bott

ONEONTA — Dillon Jeffrey Bott, 22, of Oneonta died suddenly Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, at the home of a friend.

Cremation took place at the Hillington Crematory.

Calling hours will be at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home in Oneonta, from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005. There will be a time for family and friends to share remembrances about Dillon from 4:30 to 5 p.m.

The Mass of Christian burial will follow at 5:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 39 Walnut St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Joseph A. Benintende as celebrant.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief, 493 Chestnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or to the charity of choice.

The family of Dillon wishes to express a sincere thank-you to their many friends and family, for all kind support that has been received.

The Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home at 51 Dietz St., Oneonta is serving the family.

Janice Ruth Fraher

ALASKA — Alaska resident Dr. Janice Ruth Fraher, 72, died at home of natural causes Sept. 15, 2005.

Born Jan. 28, 1933, to Harry and Anna Cobb in Towanda, Pa., she was raised on Spring Hill and attended Wyalusing Valley High School. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Keuka College in New York in 1954. She completed her Master of Science degree in medical-surgical nursing at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., in 1967, and her Ph.D. with a major in nursing research from the University of Texas, Austin, in 1983.

Dr. Fraher married Thomas R. Fraher, from Cape Cod, Mass., in 1954. His Air Force career took them to various ports of call for more than 20 years, including London, England, and Madrid, Spain.

She worked in nursing and nursing education for many years, serving on the faculty of Hartwick College in Oneonta from 1971 until 1984 and retired as Associate Dean for Nursing for the undergraduate program at Medical College of Ohio in Toledo in 1993.

Upon retirement, she and Tom settled in Alaska, after driving the Alaska Highway nearly every year since 1976. Loving to travel, they lived in their 40-foot motorhome full-time and spent many summers volunteering as campground hosts in the Alaska State Park system and at the Matanuska River Park campground.

Dr. Fraher is survived by her husband, Tom; daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and Dennis Serie of Peters Creek, Alaska, and Lynda and Gary Toombs of Oneonta; sons and daughters-in-law, David and Cindy Fraher of Painted Post and Jeffrey and Darlene Fraher of Albuquerque, N.M.; mother, Anna Cobb; sister, Susan Berkley; brother, Ty Cobb, all of Spring Hill, Pa.; and eight grandchildren, Jennifer and Michael Fraher, Brian, Rebecca and Keith Toombs, and Ben, Sarah and Katryn Fraher.

She is preceded in death by her father, Harry; and her sister, Lynda Kathleen.

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2005, at the Peters Creek Baptist Church, 21308 Old Glenn Highway, South Peters Creek.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Denali Hospice, 3935 Reka Drive, Anchorage, AK 99508, or to a charity of choice.

Arrangements were with Valley Funeral Home and Crematory in Wasilla, Alaska.

Thomas Wirtzfeld

ANACORTES, Wash. — Thomas Fred Wirtzfeld, 72, of Anacortes, Wash., died Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2005, at Providence Hospital in Anchorage, Alaska. His wife, Sally, and sister-in-law, Janet were by his side.

He was born June 19, 1933, in Bremerton, Wash., the son of Michael and Beatrice (Searle) Wirtzfeld.

Tom lived on the Olympic Peninsula and on Whidbey Island until the family moved to Anacortes, where he began school. Tom attended grade school in Anacortes, graduating from Anacortes High School in 1951. After high school, he worked at The Sash and Door and the Morrison Mill.

Tom began commercial fishing in 1951, retiring in 1997. He owned and operated the FV Shelly Lee in Kodiak, Alaska, and gillnetted herring in SE Alaska and San Francisco Bay.

In winters and for a number of years while raising his daughters, Tom worked as an operating engineer for Marine Asphalt, Associated Sand and Gravel, and Jack Murr.

He married Pat Geiger (now Blackwell) and they had two daughters, Shelly Marie and Kira Lee. Later, he married Sally Lippitt, formerly of Cooperstown, in Las Vegas, Nev.

Tom will be greatly missed by all his friends and family.

He was a great storyteller and had a wonderful sense of humor. Tom loved to travel in his van with his wife, Sally, and his dog, Lexus. He was also a member of the Anacortes Elks Lodge and Anacortes Eagles.

Tom is preceded in death by his parents; daughters, Shelly Marie Wirtzfeld and Kira Lee Young Berka; brothers, Bill Wirtzfeld, and Frank Wirtzfeld, of Mount Vernon; sisters, Margaret Soderberg and Bernice Morgan; and brother-in-law, Art Jackson.

He is survived by his wife, Sally; grandchildren, Mary Blackwell, Miranda Young, Billy Young and RJ Clement; great-grandchildren, Taylor and Emily; sisters, Marie Wirtzfeld of New York and Frances Von Hoene of Bremerton, Wash.; sister-in-law, Janet Jackson of Sarasota, Fla.; and brother-in-law, Roy Morgan of Portland, Ore.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, at Evans Funeral Chapel in Anacortes. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, at Evans Funeral Chapel, with burial following in Grand View Cemetery in Anacortes.

A reception will follow burial, at the Anacortes Elks Lodge, 1009-7th Street, Anacortes, Wash.

As a memorial, the family suggests contributions be made to the Humane Society of Skagit Valley, 18911 Kelleher Road, Burlington, WA 98233, the American Diabetes Association, 2805 Colby Ave., Everett, WA, 98201, or a charity of choice.

Arrangements are in the care of Evans Funeral Chapel and Crematory.

Richard L. "Red" Benson

BELLEVIEW, Fla. — Word has been received of the death of Richard L. "Red" Benson, 74, formerly of Edmeston and Norwich, on Friday, Sept. 9, 2005, in Ocala, Fla., after a brief illness.

Richard was born March 8, 1931, in Cooperstown, the son of Roy B. and Florence (Dailey) Benson.

He attended schools in Gilbertsville and Edmeston. Richard enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served during the Korean Conflict.

On Feb. 11, 1956, he married Theresa A. Twist in the Edmeston Church of Nativity.

Before "retiring" to Florida, Richard was an area farmer for many years. He also worked in factories in South Edmeston and Clayville and was a truck driver for Reese-Marshall Oil Company and Earl T. Wadhams.

When time permitted, he enjoyed bowling, deer hunting, card playing, and coffee with friends.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa; son, Barry (Sandy) Benson, Springview, Neb.; a sister, Pauline (Howard) Chamberlin of Sidney; brothers-in-law, Robert, George, Kenneth and Charles Twist; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Arrangements were entrusted to Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services, Belleview.

Carl Donald Schulz

FALL BRANCH, Tenn. — A memorial service for Carl Donald Schulz, 87, will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, at the Schuberts in Davenport, who now own the family farm. All those who wish to pay their respects are welcome. The service will be conducted by Bert Moore.

Carl passed away peacefully at his home Aug. 8, 2005.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Carl to The Heart of the Catskills Humane Society, Delhi, NY 13753, 607-746-3080.

James M. Connors

JEFFERSON — James M. Connors Sr., 62, passed away Sept. 19, 2005, at Robinson Terrace in Stamford.

He was born in Brooklyn on May 4, 1943, to the loving couple of Patrick J. Connors and Loretta Murphy in Bay Ridge.

James married Veronica M. Wentzell on Sept. 9, 1961.

He is survived by his wife, Veronica; and their five sons, James M. Connors Jr., Patrick C. Connors, Kevin S. Connors, Michael E. Connors and Brian K. Connors. He is the grandfather of three granddaughters, Angela L. Stine, Nicole Connors and Melanie E. Connors; and loving father-in-law of Lisa Connors, Kathleen A. Connors, Carolyn Connors, and soon-to-be Vicki Scalia. He is also survived by his sister, Eileen Farina; and three nieces and four nephews.

James worked as a pipe coverer for many years in Arcadia Asbestos in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.

James lived in Jefferson since September 2002. He moved to Jefferson from Staten Island, where he resided for more than 30 years.

James was a loving and caring man who always would give a helping hand to anyone in need.

His son, Kevin, says his father was a great man and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

He was cremated in Morris.
