Elizabeth Godley

COOPERSTOWN — Elizabeth McCray Godley, 74, died in Greece on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005, after a long illness.

Betty, as she was known to many, was born June 25, 1931, in Athens. Her father was a seventh-generation American and her mother was Greek. Mrs. Godley was raised in Greece.

Mrs. Godley was the wife of Ambassador George McMurtrie ("Mac") Godley, who predeceased her.

As the wife of a career and senior diplomat, she spent more than 25 years abroad, living and working in the Middle East, Africa and Asia, including postings in Lebanon, Laos, Zaire, Jordan, Libya, Iran, Thailand, India, the Philippines, South Korea and Japan, Mrs. Godley also spent significant time in Western Europe.

During this time, Mrs. Godley fulfilled an array of diplomatic and social responsibilities, acquiring thorough and precise understanding of each host country and its political, cultural and social standards of conduct. She interacted closely with heads of state, political dignitaries and senior business leaders.

In Lebanon, Laos and Zaire, as the wife of the United States Ambassador, she had significant diplomatic and managerial duties in her own right. She managed the residence staff of the United States Embassy and served as president of numerous overseas cultural associations and charitable organizations.

Fluent in English, French, Italian and Greek, and proficient in German, Spanish, Russian and Farsi, Mrs. Godley served as president of numerous cultural associations and charitable organizations, both overseas and in the U.S.

Ambassador and Mrs. Godley settled at the Godley family farm, Van Rensselaer House, in Morris, and were involved in many civic and cultural activities in Otsego County, including Hartwick College, Glimmerglass Opera, A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital and Bassett Healthcare.

Noted for her philanthropy, Mrs. Godley was active as a board member of the Friends of Bassett and helped to advance rural health care in our region through her support of Bassett Healthcare’s Critical Care Complex, Heart Care Institute and Mithoefer Center for Rural Surgery.

Interment will be in Greece.

Those wishing to celebrate her life should do so by contributing or volunteering to their favorite cause or charity.

Mrs. Godley was the quintessential woman of action. She will be deeply missed.

Gisela Bye

STAMFORD — Gisela Bye, 80, a former Bellerose Terrace resident, passed away Friday, Sept. 30, 2005, at the Robinson Terrace Residential and Rehabilitation Center in Stamford.

Gisela was born Jan. 10, 1925, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the daughter of Lena and Ferdinand Wohlfarth.

She married Lawrence W. Bye on June 26, 1948, a marriage of more than 57 years.

Gisela was a gifted handball and tennis player. This was no small feat since there were few ladies competing in handball during the 1940s. She played against men and that was where she got to know Lawrence, her future husband.

Gisela was a gifted artist and attended Cooper Union on a full scholarship. She spent many years working as an Advertising Artist at Hoppmann’s Studios.

During her life, Gisela was active in the Cub Scouts, the Civic Action Council, the Bellerose Terrace Civic Association, and the Water Bill Watchdogs.

Gisela is survived by her husband, Lawrence; son and grandson, Robert and Charles; brother, Rudolph Wohlfarth and his wife, Lena; niece, Linda Barbaccia and her husband, and son, Salvatore and Daniel; and nephew, Ferdinand Wohlfarth and his wife, Marion.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2005, at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford.

Funeral services will be in the funeral home at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, 2005. Burial will follow in the West Jefferson Cemetery, Jefferson.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Dorothy E. Hasenkamp

PORTLANDVILLE — Dorothy E. Hasenkamp, 85, of State Route 28 in Portlandville died Friday, Sept. 30, 2005, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

Dorothy, a lifelong area resident, was born July 24, 1920, in Hartwick, the daughter of George and Mame (Donlin) Hughes.

She graduated from Cooperstown High School in or around 1938.

On March 24, 1950, she married Melvin R. Hasenkamp in the local area. They resided for nearly all of their married lives in the Portlandville area.

Dorothy, who considered her primary obligation to be a homemaker and mother to her children, will be remembered by many for her years of service on Election Day as a registrar of voters at the polls in Portlandville.

She was for many years a communicant at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta.

Dorothy loved puzzles and dancing and the company of her family and friends. She especially loved the hours she spent socializing with her friends, and in particular the many calls, letters and visits she received from them.

Dorothy is survived by her son, Clifford (Kip) Hasenkamp and his wife, Diane, of Cooperstown; her daughter, Mary Ann McGonigal and her husband, Robert, of Kendall; a daughter, Doreen Hasenkamp of Howes Cave; two grandsons, Tyler McGonigal of St. James, and Kyle McGonigal of Kendall; a niece, Genie Hughes of Alaska; and two special nephews, John Sherman of Massachusetts and Wayne Sherman of Pennsylvania.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Melvin, in January 2003; and by her son, Melvin R. Hasenkamp Jr. in 1968; as well as by her sisters, Gladys Cooper and Anita Sherman; her brothers, George Hughes and Donald Hughes; and her nephew, Clifford W. Cooper.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday morning, Oct. 5, 2005, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home on Route 28 in Milford, with the Rev. Mary Ellen Moore, pastor of the Milford Methodist Church, officiating.

The family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2005, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Milford to receive friends.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions to the Milford Fire Department and Emergency Squad, PO Box 359, Milford, NY in Dorothy’s memory.

Arrangements are under the supervision of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Bernice Stoddard

SIDNEY — Bernice Victoria Stoddard, 91, of Sidney passed away Thursday, Oct. 6, 2005, at her home.

She was born Jan. 18, 1914, the daughter of the late Frank and Georgia (Smith) Howe in Sidney.

Bernice graduated from Sidney High School, class of 1934.

On April 13, 1941, she married Herbert Stoddard in the United Methodist Church of Sidney. He predeceased her July 26, 1962.

Mrs. Stoddard was a member of the United Methodist Church of Sidney, Post member of the Chenango United Concert Association and the Monday Evening Musical Club, Norwich.

She is survived by her son, David Wayne Stoddard, Sidney; daughter, Karen Ann Stoddard, Sidney; sister, Doris E. Fahy, Norwich; nephews, Robert and Glenna Peck, Radnor, Pa., Richard and Jacquelyn Howe, Unadilla, and Robert and Geraldine Howe, New Bern, N.C.; niece, Nancy and Mark Malone, New York; and many kitty friends.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, 2005, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 10, 2005, at the United Methodist Church of Sidney with the Rev. David Masland officiating.

Burial will be in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Red Cross Hurricane Relief Fund, Delaware Valley Humane Society, 101 East Main St., Sidney, or the charity of one’s choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Erwina Frances Tilley Dutcher

OTEGO — Erwina Frances Tilley Dutcher, 84, of Otego passed away Thursday, Oct. 6, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Oct. 24, 1920, in Otego, the daughter of Fred and Fannie (Day) Tilley.

Erwina married Roderick Dutcher on Feb. 14, 1942, in West Oneonta.

She was a teacher at Morris Central School for more than 20 years and was in partnership with her husband in dairy farming for many years.

She was a member of the West Oneonta Baptist Church for more than 70 years, a member of the West Laurens Community Church, a member of the West Laurens Homemaker’s Club, a local, county, state and national Grange Member and a 4-H leader.

One of Erwina’s greatest joys was attending Ayrshire cattle shows and sales.

Erwina is survived by her husband of 63 years, Roderick Dutcher, of Otego; her sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Peg Dutcher of Otego and Douglas and Debra Dutcher of Otego; her grandchildren, Michelle and Matthew Kane of South Hartwick, Michael and Jennifer Dutcher of Franklin, Kristin and Michael Miller of Oxford, Tracie Dutcher and Patrick Coleman of Morris, Dana Dutcher and Tom DeBoer of Otego and Dayle Dutcher of Otego; and her great-grandchildren, Caleb and Connor Kane, Carson and Paige Dutcher and Karley Miller.

She was predeceased by her parents, Fred and Fannie Tilley; and her brother, Lee Tilley.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, 2005, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Timothy Thurber, pastor of the West Oneonta Baptist Church, and the Rev. John Dougherty, retired pastor of the West Oneonta Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial will follow in the Cook Cemetery, West Oneonta.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, 2005, at the Bookhout Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820, in loving memory of Erwina Frances Tilley Dutcher.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Patsy T. Mastro

ONEONTA — Patsy T. Mastro, 82, of Oneonta passed away Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2005, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Nursing Home.

Patsy was born Sept. 15, 1923, the son of Carmen and Rose (Pedrone) Mastro.

He married Gloria LaSacco on Sept. 28, 1946, in Oneonta.

Patsy was a lifelong Oneonta resident. He worked for many years as a supervisor for the D&H Railroad.

He served his country during World War II in the United States Army.

He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church. He was a member of the Oneonta VFW and the Sixth Ward Athletic Club.

He is survived by his five children, Rosanne and her husband, Carl Miller, of Oneonta, Mark and his wife, Beth Mastro, of Chalfont, Pa., Patrick Mastro of Latham, Kim and her husband, Kip Trombly, of Niskayuna, and Jacquie and her husband, Steven Thibodeau, of Cohoes; two sisters, Angeline Mastrangeli of Rochester and Sister Mary Angeline of Oneonta; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Gloria, on April 12, 2000. He was also predeceased by his two brothers, Theodore Mastro and Dominic Mastro; and his sister, Marie Cole.

Friends may call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, from 6 to 8 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance, Friday, Oct. 7, 2005.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, 2005, in St. Mary’s Church, with both the Rev. Joseph Benintende, pastor, and the Rev. Steven Moore, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to St. Mary’s School in honor of Sister Mary Angeline.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Muriel McNulty

FLY CREEK — Muriel McNulty, 81, of Keating Road in Fly Creek died Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2005, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

Muriel was born Feb. 26, 1924, in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, the only child of Norman and Mabel (Brown) Fowkes.

She married her husband, James McNulty, on Oct. 9, 1952, having met him in Japan while he was serving in the Korean War. Their lives took them to many areas of the country, among them Oregon, Florida, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Hampshire, before they "retired" to Fly Creek in 1978.

Muriel was an avid reader. She especially loved to read and write poetry. She enjoyed discussing politics and religion with her family and friends. She loved flowers and spent time tending her flower gardens. She also bred, raised and owned a number of Siberian huskies and Arabian horses.

She is survived by her husband, James McNulty, of Fly Creek; her daughter, Eileen McNulty-Bowers and her husband, William C. Bowers, of Fly Creek; her daughter, Kathleen "Kate" McNulty; and two grandchildren, Rosa and Chance Henritzy of Portland, Ore.; and four brothers-in-law, Leonard J. McNulty of San Diego, Calif., Raymond F. McNulty and his wife, Alice, of Lakeland, Fla., Frank J. McNulty of Lakeland, Fla., and Edward J. McNulty and his wife, Virginia, of Chelmsford, Mass. Muriel is also survived by her sister-in-law, Mary A. Davis and Mary’s husband, Tom, of Lynn, Mass.; her cousin, Olive M. "Peggy" Broad of Betley, England; and by numerous nieces and nephews.

At Muriel’s request, there will be no funeral service.

The family suggests that those who wish to remember Muriel make contributions in her memory to the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, PO Box 322, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are under the supervision of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Rosemary R. Ramo

DELHI — Rosemary R. Ramo, 98, of Delhi died Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born July 27, 1907, in Brooklyn, the daughter of William and Mary (Broderick) Walsh.

Mrs. Ramo is survived by a nephew, Dr. James Sullivan of California; and a niece, Toni Weaver of Delhi.

Funeral services will take place at the convenience of the family.

Burial will be in the St. Agnes Cemetery, Greenport.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.
