Annie Brain

COOPERSTOWN — Annie (Rogers) Brain, 90, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Oct. 16, 2005.

Annie was born in County Armagh, Ireland, on June 7, 1915, daughter of William and Annie (Fry) Rogers. After coming to New York as a teenager, she lived in Astoria, Queens, until her marriage to William Brain Jr. on Dec. 9, 1939.

She attended Julia Richmond High School.

Annie and Bill spent their early years of marriage living in New Jersey. In 1950, they moved to Rockland County. After her husband died Sept. 8, 1983, Annie returned to Prospect Park, N.J., to be near her husband’s family and her beloved Plymouth Brethren Meeting friends.

When she became unable to live alone, she lived for five years with her son, Wilfred, and daughter-in-law, Joan, in Westtown. The last years of her life were spent at the Folts Home in Herkimer, and finally at The Otsego Manor in Cooperstown. This enabled her to be near her daughters, Ruthanne and Grace. During these last years she was considered a true joy to be with by all who cared for her.

Her love of her Savior, Jesus Christ, was evident in the way she loved everyone she came in contact with.

Annie worked for 11 years at Lederle Laboratories in Pearl River, but spent most of her married life being a help-mate to her husband and raising her family. She considered her role of mother and homemaker her calling.

She was a member of the Grace Conservative Baptist Church in Nanuet, where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many years. She had a special love for students in her Sunday School classes from the Lakeside School.

As her own children grew, her home was always open to their friends. Most who knew Annie never got beyond her kitchen or dining room. She took great pleasure in cooking for and serving all who came through her kitchen door — rarely sitting down unless it was for a cup of tea and a long chat.

Annie’s life was devoted to her five children, Ruthanne Shanks of Spring Valley, Wilfred D. Brain and his wife, Joan (Coons), of Westtown, Grace M. Coddington and her husband, Douglas, of Springfield, Deborah J. Miller Stark and her husband, Buck, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Sharon L. Eelman and her husband, Robert, of North Haledon, N.J.

She also took great joy and pride in her grandchildren and their spouses, Donald Brain (Jill), Maureen Brain Mastrantuono (Steve), Patricia Coddington Crawfurd (Anthony), Wesley William Coddington (Karen), David Coddington (Lana), Stephen Coddington (Sarah), Jonathan Miller (Jayme), Benjamin Miller, Crystal Stark, Michael Eelman (Jennifer) and Jeffrey Eelman (Michelle).

She also lived to see 15 great-grandchildren born. Her very greatest joy, however, was in knowing that her children and grandchildren became followers of Jesus — her only prayer for them from the day they were born. They all grew up knowing they were loved by God and her.

Annie was predeceased by her three brothers, George, William and Henry and each of their wives. She remained a special aunt to their children.

Services for Mrs. Brain will be at the VanDerPlaat Funeral Home in Franklin Lakes, N.J. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005, with calling hours from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2005.

Interment will be in the Laurel Grove Cemetery in Totowa, N.J., following the funeral service.
