Joyce M. Smith

SIDNEY — Joyce Marion Smith, 79, formerly of Sidney, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005, at St. Camillus Home in Syracuse.

She was born Sept. 22, 1926, the daughter of the late Charles and Anna Rose Eastburn Smith in Faulkton, S.D.

Joyce graduated from high school in Seattle, Wash., class of 1943.

She married Hugh Cleveland Smith of Edmeston on March 6, 1946, in Norfolk, Va. He predeceased her Sept. 18, 1998.

Joyce retired from Bendix Corp. Scintilla Division after more than 20 years as a clerk in shipping, at which time she assumed her other full-time job of trying to take care of her husband, Hugh.

What little spare time that left her she devoted to her grandchildren, her antiquing and her gardening.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Richard S. and Carolyn F. Smith, Skaneateles; granddaughter, Rachel K. Smith, Skaneateles; grandson, Zachary S. Smith, Baltimore, Md.; brother, Wendel C. Smith, Auburn, Wash.; sister-in-law, Arlene and Richard Arrandale, Sidney; brother-in-law, Louis (Scrap) Mazzarella, Sidney; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was also predeceased by her brother, Roy L. Smith; sister, LaVonne Blanchard Barstow; and sister-in-law, Jean Mazzarella.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 24, 2005, in C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Mary Ann Linder officiating. Burial will be in Ouleout Valley Cemetery in Franklin.

Memorial contributions may be made in Joyce’s name to the St. Camillus Foundation, 813 Fay Road, Syracuse, NY 13219-3098.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

Ralph V. Huyck

ONEONTA — Ralph V. Huyck, 93, of Oneonta passed away Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

Ralph was born the son of Raymond and Nellie (Buman) Huyck in Treadwell on Oct. 17, 1912.

Ralph enjoyed farming for many years. In the past, he also worked for the town of Meredith Highway Department and drove a school bus. He worked for 15 years, before retiring, as a custodian at the State University College of Technology at Delhi.

He is survived by his daughter, Sharon A. Along of Fairport; his two nephews and one niece, Roland and his wife, Jackie Huyck, of Treadwell, Eugene Huyck of Treadwell, and Marjorie Arneke of Texas; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn Huyck; and by his brother, Clarence Huyck.

Friends may call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005, at which time the family will be in attendance. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005, in the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. Lyle Linder officiating.

Burial will follow in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Humane Society of Central Delaware County, Route 10, Bloomville Road, Delhi, NY 13753 or to the Treadwell Fire Department Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Edward Hammond

WALTON — Edward W. "Ted" Hammond, 71, of Walton passed away Thursday morning, Oct. 20, 2005, at Delaware Valley Hospital after a long illness.

Ted was born in Walton on Nov. 7, 1933, the son of the late Jay and Marie Howell Hammond.

He first married Mildred Northrup, who died July 5, 1983. He then married the former Melba Grainger on Nov. 16, 1985.

He served his country in the United States Army, stationed in Germany. He was employed as a machinist for Del-Met of Walton.

He was a member of the American Legion, the VFW and the Delhi Golf Club. Ted like to cook, read books, work with wood, spend time with his grandchildren, watching them play sports, and play golf. He also spent time repairing golf clubs.

He is survived by his wife, Melba; three daughters, Karen Falco (Fred) of Maryland, Susie Moore (Brett) of Oneonta and Kris Hammond and her significant other, Doug Clark, Oneonta; three sons, Steve Hammond (Sandy) of Mclean, Tom Hammond (Marcia) of Walton and Marc Hammond (Annette) of Walton; three stepchildren, Kathleen Hessinger (Gary) and Duane "Gary" Hime, both of Walton, and Andrew Hime (Deborah), Idaho; 11 grandchildren, Rachel, Aaron, Wade, Drew, Margaret, Freddie, Maria, Josh, Shane, Lucas and Liam; one stepgrandson, Ethan; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a son, Jerry; four brothers, Doug, Albert, Raymond and William Hammond; and four sisters, Alice Turner, Katherine McRabie, Barbara Moore and Dorthea Cowan.

Friends and family are invited to call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2005, at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton, where services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Suzanne Cole officiating. Interment will be in Walton Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Ted’s memory may be made to Delaware Valley Hospital or Catskill Area Hospice. Envelopes for memorial contributions are available at the funeral home.

Marjorie Ann Luke

COLLINGS LAKES, N.J. — Marjorie Ann Luke, 44, of Collings Lakes, N.J., and formerly of Cambridge and Oneonta, died peacefully at home surrounded by family.

Born in Somers Point, N.J., she grew up in Patchogue, Long Island, and lived in Oneonta and Cambridge for 15 years before moving to Collings Lakes, were she spent the last three years.

She was employed at Castleford Tailors of Williamstown, N.J., where she was a seamstress-sample maker continuing her career of 18 years as a seamstress.

Her most favorite things were spending time with her family and especially the time she shared and loved with her nieces and nephews. They were the joy of her life.

Surviving are her parents, Christopher Luke Sr. and Marjorie (nee Daub) of Mount Vision; sisters, Jacquelyn (Keith Herman) of Collings Lakes, N.J., Jean Garretto (Charles) of Cambridge, Roberta Figat (Ron) of Medford, Long Island, and Kelly Luke (Mark McGee) of Oneonta; brother, Tech. Sgt. Christopher Luke III (Michelle) of Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico; and beloved nieces and nephews, Mark, Justine, Bubba, Jennifer, Laura, Charles, Megan, Brandon, Kaitlyn, Joe, Ronnie, Luke, Brian, Christiana, Christopher, Cristin and Chelsea.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her memorial service at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Marinella Funeral Home, 102 N. 3rd St., Hammonton, N.J.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Cambridge.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to be made to Atlantic City Medical Center Hospice, PO Box 1626, Pleasantville, NJ 08232.

Alfred N. Boutin
OTEGO — Alfred N. Boutin, 69, of Otego and formerly of Oneonta and Bennington Vt., died unexpectedly Dec. 25, 1997 at his residence.

Born Aug. 19, 1928 in Bennington, Vt., the son of Henry L. and Mary (Trombly) Boutin, he first married the former Loretta Cordes in Bennington, Vt. and then Francis Kettera, who died in 1988. He later married Margaret Boest in Oneonta, who survives.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Boutin held several supervisory positions in the dairy industry with Cumberland Farms and Tuxedo Foods covering the North Eastern United States.

Mr. Boutin was very active for 60 years in the boy scouts, having been associated with the Mohegan Council, the Herkimer Council and the Oscadella Council of Oneonta, and was awarded the Order of the Arrow for his participation.

Survivors include three sons, Darell Boutin of South Casco, Maine, Brian Boutin of Granville and Gerald Boutin of Hackettstown, N.J.; one daughter, Shirley Boutin of Granville; three stepchildren, Marylyn Digman of Winsor, Conn., Pamela Seymour of Plattsburgh and Jeffery Seymour of Brentwood, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; two sisters, Marjorie Caron of St. Augustine, Fla. and Janet Harwood of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; and a special friend, Bonnie Hosier of Gilbertsville. He was predeceased by a daughter, Cindy Boutin in 1996.

Private funeral services will be held later at the convenience of the family with burial in Bennington National Cemetery, Bennington, Vt.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Kenneth N. Decker
MARYLAND — Mr. Kenneth N. Decker, 60, of Maryland, died Dec. 31, 1997 at his residence.

He was born Feb. 18, 1937 in Gilboa, the son of Claude Dexter and Rosa Decker. He married Alicia Rodriguez on Aug. 18, 1956 in Durant, Okla.

Mr. Decker served in the United States Air Force as a jet aircraft mechanic during the Korean Conflict.

Ken was the manager of the FBC Department Store in Oneonta. He was a life member of the DAV, a member of the American Legion Post 259, Oneonta, and a beloved Yankees fan. He was the founder of the Oneonta Yankees Booster Club. Ken was a great sports fan. He loved the outdoors, especially when he was camping, hunting or fishing, all of which he enjoyed. He also enjoyed telling jokes and stories. Ken was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be greatly missed by all.

He is survived by his wife, Alicia Decker, at home; three daughters and a son-in-law, Rosa and Claude Joslin of Portlandville, Catherine Decker, at home, and stepdaughter, Mary Miller of Hudson; one son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth N. and Vicki Decker Jr. of Milford; two sisters, Joyce Fontaine of Maryland and Claudia and Bill Harris of New Lisbon; a brother, Eugene and Cindy Dexter of Maryland; beloved grandson, Michael Farman and Tammy Kiser; beloved granddaughter, Samantha Joslin; four other grandchildren and one great-grandchild; best friend, Carl Decker of Unadilla; close and personal friends, Sam S. Nader, Phil Kellerman, Bernie Williams and Ed and Mary Finley; also several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ken was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia Ann Decker in 1992 and a brother, Dwight Dexter.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998 at 2 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Nelson Park, chaplain at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, officiating.

Mr. Decker will be cremated in the Hillington Cemetery, Morris.

The family will be at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, Friday evening, Jan. 2, 1998 from 7-9 p.m. when those who wish may call.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in memory of Mr. Kenneth N. Decker.

Louis W. Lehmann Jr.
ONEONTA — Louis W. Lehmann Jr., 66, of P.O. Box 115, Winney Hill Road, West Oneonta, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997 at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born April 25, 1931 in Yorkville, the son of Louis and Hazel (Laquay) Lehmann. He married Mary E. Cackett on Nov. 29, 1952 in New Hartford.

Louis served with the U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers during the Korean War.

Prior to moving to Oneonta 35 years ago, he was a salesman for a liquid asphalt company in New Hartford. After moving to Oneonta he became an area manager in the same business, and was well known throughout Otsego, Schoharie and Delaware counties.

Louis was also a member of the Laurens Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Mary E. Lehmann of Oneonta, along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no calling hours, and a private funeral service will be held at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand Street, Oneonta.

Burial will be in the spring in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Yorkville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Oneonta Fire Department Ambulance Fund.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Alma B. Roberts
COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Alma B. Roberts of Cooperstown passed away at her home Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998. Mrs. Roberts was born Jan. 6, 1902 in Schenevus, the daughter of Horatio P. and Helen (Thompson) Becker.

Mrs. Roberts graduated from Schenevus High School in 1920 and then graduated as a teacher from Oneonta Normal. She taught school at Catskill and Scotia for several years. Mrs. Roberts married Lyle Edgar Roberts on June 26, 1926 in Schenevus. They then moved to Newcombe, where Lyle was superintendent of schools for 35 years. After his retirement in 1960, Mr. and Mrs. Roberts moved to Cooperstown.

Mrs. Roberts was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, the Otsego Chapter DAR, Women's Club since 1960 and the M.I.B. Hospital Auxiliary.

Alma is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Margery and Roger Witherell of Chatham, Mass.; one grandson and his wife, David C. and Suzanne Witherell of East Harwich, Mass.; two great-grandsons, Jesse Lyle and Lee Henry Witherell of Belfast, Maine; a sister-in-law, Myra (Mrs. Richard) Jensen of Sarasota, Fla.; and a niece, Anne Jensen of Spokane, Wash.

She was predeceased by her husband, Lyle, on Sept. 29, 1991.

A memorial service for Mrs. Roberts will be held Monday, Jan. 5, 1998 at 8 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown with the Rev. Judith Ray officiating.

At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may send contributions to the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown in her name.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Carl E. Shelton
TROUT CREEK — Carl E. Shelton, 52, of Pine Swamp Road, Trout Creek, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997 at The Hospital in Sidney.

He was born Feb. 3, 1945, in Walton, the son of Carl and Dorothy (Martin) Shelton, and married Marie Alger Aug. 25, 1962 in Bainbridge.

Mr. Shelton was employed as a safety coordinator by the Delaware County Highway Department in Delhi and was president of local CSEA.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Shelton of Trout Creek; a daughter, Toni Shelton of Trout Creek; three daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Ronald Fletcher, Robin and Michael Gray and Tracie and Franco Rubera, all of Trout Creek; two sons and daughters-in-law, C. Bruce and Linda Shelton of Franklin and Craig and Tracey Peck Shelton of Corbet; 15 grandchildren; a brother, Stephen Shelton of Trout Creek; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Kathryn and William Layton of Trout Creek and Sharon and Thomas Gifford of Masonville; also several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998, at the Lyon Bros.-Way Inc., 102 Delaware St., Walton, with pastor David S. Gatje officiating.

Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Friday, Jan. 2, 1998 from 7-9 p.m. at the Lyon Bros.-Way Inc., 102 Delaware St., Walton.

Contributions may be made in Carl Shelton's memory to the Trout Creek Fire Department or the Trout Creek Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are by Lyon Bros.-Way Inc., Walton.
