Marjorie T. Canham
MOUNT UPTON — Marjorie T. Canham, 88, of Mount Upton, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998 at the Valley View Manor Nursing Home in Norwich.

She was born Dec. 27, 1909 in Sunderland, England, the daughter of Charles and Harriet (Clemson) Turner. She married Dennis Canham on June 26, 1936 in Brooklyn. He died Oct. 11, 1992.

A graduate of Russell Sage College, Class of 1929, Marjorie was a medical technologist at Chenango Memorial Hospital.

Marjorie had been a resident of Butternut Valley since 1954 and was well known for her love of her gardens and her dogs.

She is survived by her son, Hugh Canham of North Syracuse; a daughter, Molly DelGiacoo of Mount Upton; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 1998 at the Christ Episcopal Church in Gilbertsville, with the Rev. John Scott III officiating. Cremation will take place at the Hillington Crematory in Morris following the funeral services.

There will be no calling hours.

Friends are asked to donate to the Christ Episcopal Church or the Gilbertsville Fire Department in her memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Jean B. Chase
ONEONTA — Jean B. Chase, 75, of Oneonta, died Jan. 10, 1998 at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany due to complications following heart surgery.

A longtime resident of Oneonta, her career as an educator spanned several decades. She began as a physical education teacher in both Laurens Central School and the Oneonta school system. Later, she was a guidance counselor at Morris Central School and finally Milford Central School.

Born in Morristown, Jean received her bachelor's degree form the State University College at Cortland and her master's degree from the University of Southern California. During World War II, she served in the Navy and was stationed in Brooklyn.

After her retirement, she kept very active. She worked toward and received a private pilot's license. Following her passion for parapsychology, Jean taught adult education courses in this subject, meeting regularly with her students and friends. She was an avid MG fan and could often be found piloting her red convertible over the mountains around Oneonta.

Jean's husband, Dr. G. Hal Chase, predeceased her in 1986. A son, Timothy in Holmdel, N.J., a daughter, Judith Catella in Pulaski and two granddaughters survive her.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998 at the First Presbyterian Church in Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in Jean's name to the Susquehanna S.P.C.A., RD 3 Box 64B, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Mildred C. Donaldson
HAMDEN — Mildred C. "Peg" Donaldson, 77, of Hamden, died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998 at her home.

Born Feb. 3, 1920 in Montclair, N.J., the daughter of John and Esther Harding McAllister, she was married to John E. Donaldson, June 23, 1942. He predeceased her Oct. 12, 1969.

Peg earned her RN degree from Mountainside Hospital School of Nursing in 1941. After spending six years in Boise, Idaho she returned to New Jersey and to Mountainside Hospital in 1948. She became a night nursing supervisor.

After the death of her husband she moved to Hamden and was an office nurse for the Walton Medical Group, retiring in 1990.

She was a member of The Reformed Presbyterian Church in Walton.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Virginia and Julian Wilcox of Hamden; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Pearl Donaldson of Lafayette, Colo., Jonathan (Jack) and Brandon Donaldson of Kinston, N.C.; also surviving are grandchildren, Ann Margaret and Jeffrey Weis of Rochester, Jennifer L. Wilcox of Owego, Jonathan J. Wilcox of Norwich, ELizabeth A. Donaldson of Los Angeles, Calif., Andrew M. Donaldson of Lafayette, Colo. and Jonathan and Janie Donaldson of Weinheim, Germany.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 11 a.m. at The Reformed Presbyterian Church, Bruce and East Streets, Walton, with the Rev. Scott Wilkenson, officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Bethel.

Friends may call at the Clark and Winter Funeral Home in Walton todat at their convenience. The family will be in attendance from 7-9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Peg Donaldson's name may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 25 Second St., Delhi, N.Y. 13753 or to the White Lake Camp Fund, c/o The Reformed Presbyterian Church, Walton.

John Henry Edwards
GEORGETOWN, Texas — John Henry Edwards, 75, of Georgetown, Texas, died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998 at his home in Georgetown. He was born March 26, 1922 at Franklin to Ward and Julia (Williams) Edwards. He served as a seargent in the Army Air Corps from 1940 until 1945 during World War II. He was a member of The Church on the Move in Austin, Texas.

On June 17, 1955, he and Flora Jean Andrews were married in Conklin. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife on July 8, 1995.

After working in industry, he and Jean decided to open and operate beauty salons in Franklin, Sidney and Oneonta. They moved to Georgetown, Texas in December of 1978 and opened Artisan Hair Care Inc. in 1980. They retired in 1988.

John is survived by his sister, Helen Kelly of Livingston Manor and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today in The Gabriels Funeral Chapel, Georgetown, with the Rev. Mona Aldridge officiating. Burial will be in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Georgetown, Texas.

Those desiring to do so may send memorial gifts to Hospice, Austin, Texas.

Charles D. Kenyon
ALBANY — Charles D. Kenyon of Croswell Street died Saturday Jan. 10, 1998 at St. Peter's Hospital.

Born in Unadilla, he lived in the capital district for many years.

He retired from the Albany Chamber of Commerce as the executive assistant.

He was predeceased by his wife, Geneva E. Kenyon, on Jan. 5, 1998.

Funeral services will be private.

Those who wish may send a rememberence to Community Hospice, 315 S. Manning Blvd., Albany, N.Y. 12208.

Arrangements are by Tebbutt Funeral Home, Albany.

George H. Ketcham Jr.
BOVINA CENTER — George H. Ketcham Jr., 74, of Bovina Center died Jan. 10, 1998 at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

Born June 22, 1923 in Seaford, he was the son of George H. Ketcham and Mildred A. Heweek.

He served with the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1950 and was a manager with Grumman Corp. in Long Island.

Mr. Ketcham was an avid outsdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include a sister, Shirley Spanton of Florida; friend and companion, Irene Beers of Bovina Center; and friends, Mary Sue and Harvey Banks of Schenevus.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, Jan. 14, 1998 at 1 p.m. at MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart, with the Rev. Edward McNulty of Bovina Presbyterian Church officiating.

Burial will be in the Davenport Cemetery in the spring.

Arrangements are by MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Glenn W. Saunders
GARRATTSVILLE — Glenn W. Saunders, 86, of Garrattsville, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998 at his residence.

He was born April 3, 1911 in Gilbertsville, the son of Charles J. and Nellie (Wright) Saunders. He married Eunice Goodspeed in Gilbertsville on June 10, 1933. They were married for 65 years.

Mr. Saunders was a well-known Butternut Valley dairy farmer and had served in various town offices including assessor, justice of the peace and supervisor for over 20 years. He was a charter member of the Garrattsville Fire Department and a member of the Garrattsville Presbyterian Church.

Glenn is survived by his wife of 65 years, Eunice, of Garrattsville; four children, Doris Lukas and her husband Frank of Jacksonville, Fla., Donald Saunders and his wife Mary, of Eskridge, Kan., Richard Saunders and his wife Lorie of Edmeston and Linda Gartung and her husband Thomas of Barton; 11 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Edna Card and three brothers, Lloyd, Archy and Orla Saunders.

It was Glenn's request that no funeral services or calling hours be held.

Friends are asked to call at the Saunders residence, south of Garrattsville on state Route 51 at their convenience.

Interment will be in the Brookside Cemetery at a later date.

Those who wish may donate to the Garrattsville Emergency Squad in his memory.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Celia Goodrich Twining
EAST MAINE — Celia Goodrich Twining, 96, of East Maine died at the home of her son on Jan. 9, 1998. She was the wife of the late Rev. Harry L. Twining.

She was born in Spencer, the daughter of Hiram and Mary (Mabee) Goodrich.

Mrs. Twining was a graduate of Christ Hospital School of Nursing in Cincinnati. She was a registered nurse and practiced in the areas of her husband's ministries including Brookdale, Penn., Red Falls, Amsterdam, Lake Placid, Ravina and Oneonta. After retirement they served also in Endicott, Catskill and Barkersville. She and her husband served for three years doing missionary work in Zambia, Africa.

Survivors include her daughters, Bertha Marshall of Lake Placid, Mary Lu Quintana of South Bethlehem and Cora Albus of Northville; sons, Emerson of Exmore, Virginia, Elwood of Tecumseh, Mich., Roger of Allentown, Penn. and Paul of Baltimore; 28 grandchildren and 52 great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Harry Jr. of San Jose, Calif and a daughter, Meredith of Richland Center, Wisc.

A funeral service will be held today at 2 p.m. at Barber Memorial Home Inc., 428 Main St., Johnson City. Her sons Emerson and Paul will officiate. Burial will be in East Main Cemetery in the spring.

The family will receive friends today from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at the Barber Memorial Home.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Beachmont Christian Camp Building Fund, 6433 Mount Vota Rd., Kingsville, Md. 21087.

John E. and Madeline R. Van Dine
MAHWAH, N.J. — John E. and Madeline R. Van Dine (nee Foy) of Mahwah, N.J. died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998. They were residents of Mahwah for the past 50 years and also of Garrattsville for the past 30 years.

Mr. and Mrs. Van Dine were the owners of Van Dine Brothers of Mahwah for 60 years. The company designed, manufactured and marketed Louisville Slugger bats, pens and pencils.

They were both members of Immaculate Conception Church of Mahwah.

John was a World War II Marine Corps veteran, serving in the Pacific Theater. He was a charter member of the Mahwah Fire Company No. 4; Little League and Babe Ruth coach; member of the Bowlers Hall of Fame for bowling a 300 game in Suffern. He played minor league baseball for the Cardinal farm team; member of the Royal Order of the Moose No. 1767, Sebastian, Fla., and was an avid golfer.

Madeline was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Mahwah Fire Company 4 and a volunteer librarian at Immaculate Conception School, Mahwah.

The essence of their 56 years of marriage was their unconditional love, affection and caring for each other, their children and grandchildren.

Surviving are five daughters, Madeline Karen and Thomas Sancetta of Mahwah, Jayne A. and William Van Vooren of Richardson, Texas, Deborah Alice and Thomas Rioux of Franklin Lakes, Vinora Mary and George Wagner of Mahwah and Mary Van Dine of Mahwah; a son, John E. and Julie Van Dine of North Branch, N.J.; three sisters, Helen Vogel of Florida, Agnes Fischer of Long Boat Key, Fla., and Ceil Verrinder of Wayne; a brother, Joseph Foy of Hawthorne; 12 grandchildren, Thomas, Michael, Jacqueline and Christopher Sancetta, Christine and Stephen Van Vooren, Michael and Garrett Rioux and Aimee, Kyle, Brended and Colin Wagner; also three great-grandchildren and an aunt, Ellen Monte of Westwood.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998 from 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, 257 Godwin Ave., Wyckoff, N.J.

Following the visiting, a Memorial Mass will be held at 3:30 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception R.C. Church, 900 Darlington Ave., Mahwah, N.J.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mahwah Fire Company No. 4, 50 Fardale Ave., Mahwah, N.J. 07430 or Mahwah Company 4 Ambulance Corps, P.O. Box 480, Mahwah, N.J. 07430.

George Quackenbush
WEST DAVENPORT — Mr. George Quackenbush Jr., 68, of West Davenport, died Monday morning, Jan. 12, 1998 at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born June 26, 1929 in Oneonta, the son of George and Margretha (Hitchcock) Quackenbush Sr.

George was a lifelong area resident and was a laborer for several area businesses over the years. He had worked for Dick Payne and Dan Grant Whitewashing and had also worked on the Les Frasier Farm for several years. At one time he had a milk route with Oneonta Dairy and George Utter. He also attended the West Davenport Baptist Church.

He is survived by a son, Steven Quackenbush of Greeley, Colo.; a brother, Robert Quackenbush of West Fairview, Pa.; two sisters, Isabelle Judson of Davenport Center and Mildred Sullivan of Otego; two grandchildren, Geordan and Daniel Quackenbush of Clyde; two adopted grandchildren, Angel Robinson and Thomas Cargill, both of Oneonta; also several nieces and nephews.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 1998 from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Melvin Farmer, pastor of the River Street Baptist Church of Oneonta, officiating.

Mr. Quackenbush will be placed in the Bookhout Funeral Home Private Vault to await later burial in the Charlotte Valley Cemetery, West Davenport, in the spring of 1998.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 1998 prior to the funeral service, when the family will be present at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Cancer Society, 57 Front St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Vivian M. Seward
MARYLAND — Vivian M. Seward, 80, of Maryland died Jan. 14, 1998 at Fox Hospital following a brief illness.

She was born Feb. 9, 1917 in Oneonta, the daughter of Howard and Lena (Fuller) Odell. She married John Wesley Seward June 25, 1938 at Oneonta.

Mrs. Seward was a housewife and was a former tax collector for the Milford School District. She was also a former employee of the Redwood Motel in Colliersville.

She was a graduate of Oneonta High School, class of 1935, having graduated with high honors.

Mrs. Seward was a member of the Cooperstown Junction United Methodist Church, where she was active as a former Sunday School teacher and until her recent illness was the financial secretary of the church. She was also secretary of the Center City Senior Citizens Club at Nader Towers and was a former election inspector for the town of Milford.

Survivors include her husband, John Wesley Seward, at home; four children, Marjorie Hill of Wolcott, John and his wife Hortencia Seward of Cerritos, Calif., Leona and her husband Robert Hoag of Maryland and James and his wife Cynthia Seward of Milford; 14 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, several nephews, nieces and cousins.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Seward and Royce Odell.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998 at 1 p.m. in the Cooperstown Junction United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rodney E. Johnson, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be later in the Cooperstown Junction Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Lewis Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta, after 2 p.m. on Friday. The family will be in attendance from 7-9 p.m.
