Charlotte T. Olsen
COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Charlotte T. Olsen, 67, formerly of Massapequa, Long Island, died late Friday evening, March 6, 1998 at her home on Olsen Farm, Hubble Hollow Road in the town of Middlefield.

She was born Sept. 29, 1930 in Brooklyn, a daughter of Ludivico (Louis) and Mary nee Martino Carbonara. She married Edward O. Olsen Sr. on Nov. 8, 1954 at St. Gregory's Roman Catholic Church in Queens.

Mrs. Olsen was raised and spent most of her life in the New York City and Long Island area. She worked as a medical office administrator in Plainview, Long Island, until her retirement in 1992. It was then that she and her husband moved from their home in Massapequa, Long Island, to their new home in the town of Middlefield.

Of the Catholic faith, Mrs. Olsen was a dedicated member of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown where she performed many hours of volunteer labor. She was an avid supporter of many organizations, both in the Cooperstown and metropolitan New York area as well as throughout the world. She helped many people throughout her life, and will be greatly missed by her husband and all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Edward O. Olsen Sr.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Edward O. Olsen Jr. and his wife, Lennie, of Cooperstown and Kenneth Olsen and his wife Carol, of Otego; three grandchildren, Jennifer, Christina and Kenneth Olsen Jr.; one sister, Carol Brown of Morrisville, Pa.; one brother, Joseph Carbonara of Northport, Long Island; and three nephews, Jimmy Brown, Joseph Carbonara Jr. and Andrew Carbonara.

She was predeceased by one brother, Ludwick Carbonara, who died in 1972.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 10, 1998 at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with the Rev. John R. Roos, pastor, officiating.

Committal services and interment will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 11, 1998 alongside the Pollio family mausoleum at the Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury, Long Island.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown this afternoon and evening, Monday, March 9, 1998 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., when Mrs. Olsen's family will be in attendance.

Expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may by made to St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 31 Elm St., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326 or Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home, Cooperstown.

Edward J. Matter Jr.
WESTFORD — Edward J. Matter Jr., 56, of Westford, died Sunday, March 8, 1998 at Bassett Healthcare Hospital in Cooperstown, due to an accident while in the line of duty with the Westford Fire Department.

He was born Aug. 27, 1941 in Troy, the son of Edward J. Sr. and Mary (Belaska) Matter. He married Dona L. Figary on Jan. 5, 1985 at the Schenevus Methodist Church.

Ed was employed at the State University College at Oneonta in the Greenhouse and was a groundskeeper for 28 years, retiring in 1995.

Ed joined the Westford Fire Department in February 1967. He had been very involved with the activities within the department. He served as chairman on the Board of Fire Commissioners in the Westford Fire District. He was a longtime member of the Otsego County Volunteer Fireman Association, serving as the president in 1994 and 1995, also served on the Otsego County Fire Advisory Board since 1994 and joined the Central New York Fireman's Association in February 1994, serving on the Board of Directors.

Ed was in the Boy Scouts of America achieving the Order of the Arrow. He passionately enjoyed numerous outdoor activities and will be remembered and missed by many.

Survivors include his wife, Dona L. Matter of Westford; his parents, Edward J. Sr. and Mary Matter of Latham; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Rebecca and Don Cook of Florida, Elizabeth Matter of Connecticut and Melissa and Andrew Shaffer of Georgia; a sister, Nancy Matter of Albany; six grandchildren and several uncles and cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, 1998 at the Second Baptist Church, Main Street, Worcester, with Full Fireman's Honors. The Rev. Judith A. Thistle, pastor, will officiate.

At Ed's request, he will be cremated and burial will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery in Troy, at the convenience of the family.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, March 10, 1998 from 7-9:30 p.m. at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, 115 Main St., Worcester.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in loving memory of Ed to the Westford Fire Department, P.O. Box 24, Westford, N.Y. 13488.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Yvonne M. Stowell
FORT EDWARD — Yvonne M. Stowell, 86, of Reynolds Road, died Saturday, March 7, 1998 at the Glens Falls Hospital.

Born in Hudson Falls on July 26, 1911, she was the daughter of Bonaventurte and Rosalie (Brunell) Porlier.

Mrs. Stowell attended St. Paul's Parochial School in Hudson Falls. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Fort Edward where she served as organist for several years. She also was a member of Moreau Community Center in South Glens Falls and was a devoted mother and grandmother.

Mrs. Stowell's husband, Alfred J. Stowell, died July 19, 1996. The couple were married for 67 years. Several brothers and sisters also died before her.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Mary B. and Marcley J. Hilderbrand of Franklin; four granddaughters, Martha Warner of Marblehead, Margaret Tarbell and her husband Tracy of Afton, Mary Fox of Slingerlands, Marla Chae and her husband Edison of Boston, Mass.; three grandsons Marcley Hilderbrand and his friend Brigette Chaprewski of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Harold Hilderbrand of Hoboken, N.J., Alfred Hilderbrand of Los Angeles, Calif.; five great-grandchildren, Randi Lynn Warner of Marblehead, Henry Fox and Alexander Fox both of Slingerlands, Brian Tarbell and Conor Tarbell both of Afton; one sister Bella Lemery of Florida; a special niece Betty Irish of Glens Falls; a special great-grandnephew, Peter Lemery; a special friend, Barbara Oeinck of South Glens Falls; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Friday, at the M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 82 Broadway, Fort Edward, with the Rev. William Cooper, rector of the Church of the Messiah, Glens Falls, officiating.

Friends are invited to call from 1 p.m. Friday until the time of service at 3 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the spring in Union Cemetery, Fort Edward.

The family suggests donations be made to the charity of one's choice.

Walter V. Jones
SIDNEY — Walter V. Jones, 47, of 16 Pineview Terrace, Sidney, died Sunday March 8, 1998, at his residence, following an extended illness.

He was born Aug. 28, 1950 in Sidney, the son of Floyd and Beulah (Bell) Jones. He was married to Charlotte J. Gordon, April 29, 1989 in Unadilla.

Mr. Jones was a lifelong resident of the Unadilla and Sidney area and was, for many years, a self-employed carpenter. He was a former member of the Carpenters Union Housing Local No. 245 in Oneonta.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte J. Jones of Sidney; his mother, Beulah Jones of Unadilla; two daughters, Ginny Judd of Tarawa Terrace II, N.C., and Alene Jones of Sidney; a son, Daryl Jones of New Lisbon; two stepdaughters, Laurie Eckert of Unadilla and Carin Hendrickson of Walton; a stepson, Russ Conway of Bloomfield; his mother- and father-in-law, Clifford and Susan Palmatier of Walton; four sisters, Lillian Jones of Lancaster, Ohio, Shirley Luce of Sidney, Mary Bunt of Unadilla and Rose Howard of Vestal; three brothers, Paul Jones of Sidney, Robert Jones of Sidney and Jeffrey Jones of Unadilla; 10 grandchildren; also several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his father, Floyd Jones, and two brothers, Floyd Arnold Jones and George Jones.

Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, 1998 at the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Burial will be later in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Fire Department Building Fund.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

E. Isabelle Rowley
OXFORD — Isabelle Rowley, formerly of Bainbridge, died Sunday, March 8, 1998 at the New York State Veteran's Home in Oxford.

She was born Oct. 23, 1900 in Milford, the daughter of John and Nellie Mae (Walrath) Rarick. She married Dewey Rowley on Feb. 16, 1921 in Cooperstown.

Mrs. Rowley was a lifelong resident of the area. For many years, she was a linotype operator with the Binghamton Press. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Algonquin Grange in Bainbridge.

She is survived by her daughter, Dorothy Moss of Bainbridge; her granddaughters, Barbara Yoder of Peckville, Pa. and Linda Ayres of Brockport; her grandsons, Gary Moss of Valrico, Fla., James Moss of Binghamton and Kevin Moss of Canandaigua; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1979.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 12, 1998 at the Joyce Funeral Home Inc. in Unadilla with the Rev. Roger G. Yoder of Peckville, Pa., officiating.

Burial will be in the spring at the Milford Cemetery, Milford.

The family will receive friends at the Joyce Funeral Home Inc. Wednesday evening, March 11, 1998, from 7-9 p.m.

Arrangements are by the Joyce Funeral Home Inc., Unadilla.

Madge Allen Riggs
BURDETT — Madge Allen Riggs (Matushka Mary), 69, of Burdett, passed away Saturday, March 7, 1998.

She is survived by her husband, Father Kyril Riggs, one daughter and three sons.

Her husband serves St. Innocent Orthodox Mission in downtown Oneonta.

Funeral services will be held in Elmira Heights on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, 137-139 Horseheads Blvd., Elmira Heights, N.Y. 14903 or the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are under the direction of the James D. Barrett Funeral Home, 1004 Lake St., Elmira.

Howard H. Oles
UNADILLA — Howard H. Oles, 84, of 34 Ontio Terrace, Unadilla, died Monday, March 9, 1998 at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born April 6, 1913 in Unadilla, the son of Claude and Eva (Van Duesen) Oles. He married Grace Shaw on March 7, 1992 in Oneonta.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving the U.S. Armed Air Force from 1942-1945.

Mr. Oles was a graduate of Unadilla High School and Albany Business College. He was a lifelong Unadilla resident and was a former Unadilla town justice, a former performer with the Unadilla Franklin Community Band, a former player and manager of the Unadilla Town Baseball Team, a former performer with the Tri-Town Theater in Sidney, an avid golfer and a retired employee of Amphenol Corp. of Sidney. He was a member of the Unadilla American Legion Joyce-Bell Post No. 578, St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Unadilla and the Sidney Elks Lodge No. 2175.

He is survived by his wife, Grace Oles of Unadilla; a daughter-in-law, Janeen C. Oles of Sidney; a stepdaughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and John Hartner of Oneonta; a stepson and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Letty Shaw of Oneonta; a grandson and his wife, Scott and Tracy Oles of Sidney; two great-granddaughters, Taylor Michelle and Amber Lynne Oles of Sidney; two step-grandchildren, Tracy and Leann Shaw of Oneonta; and cousins.

He was predeceased by his son, Thomas H. Oles, in 1997.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 13, 1998 at the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla, with the Rev. Gordon A. Polenz, pastor of Sacred Heart Church, Sidney, officiating.

Burial will be later in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Friends may call at the funeral home, Thursday, March 12 at their convenience. The family will be in attendance Thursday evening from 7-9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Fire Department Building Fund.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Lena May Van Zandt
ONEONTA — Mrs. Lena May Van Zandt, 87, of Oneonta, died Saturday morning, March 7, 1998 at the New York State Veteran's Home in Oxford.

She was born May 6, 1910 in Franklin, the daughter of Asa and Rose (Schermerhorn) Walling. Lena married Emory D. Van Zandt March 24, 1928 in Scranton, Pa. He died March 4, 1992.

Mrs. Van Zandt was a lifelong area resident and had been a homemaker in her own home, caring for her family.

At one time she belonged to a local bowling league, which she enjoyed as a pastime. Lena was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Oneonta for over 50 years.

She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Douglas B. and Janet A. Van Zandt of Oneonta and Robert D. Van Zandt of Oneonta; a brother, Raymond Walling of Oneonta; a sister, Hazel Marguerite Stark of Delhi; seven grandchildren, Douglas Van Zandt Jr. of Ashburn, Va., Kurt W. Van Zandt of Oneonta, Karl Emory Van Zandt of Sterling, Va., Serena J. Van Zandt of Fleischmanns, Tanya Venessa Pondolfino of Clearwater, Fla., Yana Lee Olive of West Oneonta and Robert Scott Van Zandt of Oneonta; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, including Janet and Daniel Lewis of Harpursville and many great nieces and nephews.

Funeral and committal services will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, March 15, 1998 from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta with the Rev. William D. Bouton, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta, officiating.

There will be no calling hours at the funeral home.

Mrs. Van Zandt will be placed in the Bookhout Funeral Home private vault to await later burial in the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

The family requests expressions of sympathy be made to the First United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in memory of Lena Van Zandt.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Leah P. Dillenbeck
OTEGO — Leah P. Dillenbeck, 83, of 57 Main St., Otego, died Tuesday, March 10, 1998 at Wilson Memorial Hospital, Johnson City.

She was born May 5, 1914 in Oneonta, the daughter of Horace and Frances (Warner) Nichols.

She married Harold R. Dillenbeck on Sept. 24. 1938 in Binghamton. Mr. Dillenbeck died July 23, 1993.

She had been a resident of Otego since 1959 and was a former resident of the Wells Bridge area. She was a retired employee of Amphenol Corp. in Sidney.

Mrs. Dillenbeck was a member of the Otego Baptist Church, AARP, American Legion Auxiliary Joyce-Bell Post No. 578 in Unadilla and The Women of the Moose Chapter No. 502 in Sidney.

She is survived by four daughters, Donna M. Benning of Otego, Patricia M. Torres of Davenport, Linda Fisher of Owego and Sharon A. Emerson of Otego; four sons, Harold H. Dillenbeck of Oceanside, Calif., Charles E. Dillenbeck of Meriden, Conn., John C. Dillenbeck of Sidney and Thomas M. Dillenbeck of Hot Springs, Ark.; also several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Pamela L. Dillenbeck, in 1956 and a grandson, Leon J. Allen.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 14, 1998 at the Otego Baptist Church. The Rev. Allan C. Hatch, pastor, and the Rev. Robert Wesley of Sidney will officiate.

Burial will be later in Sand Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Friends may call Friday, March 13 at the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla, from 7-9 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Otego Baptist Church or the Otego Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.
