Charles Wilson
Charles "Ben" Wilson, 72, of East Afton Road, Bainbridge, passed away peacefully at his residence on Wednesday morning, March 11, 1998.

He was born Jan. 18, 1926 in Madison, N.J., the son of August and Catherine Castle Wilson.

He was first married to Muriel Wilson, who predeceased him Dec. 30, 1976. He later married Barbara Scanlon on March 24, 1984 in Sidney.

Mr. Wilson had been an area resident for the past 20 years and formerly lived in Denville, N.J.

He was a retired printer with Compton Press. Ben was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Coast Guard.

He was a member of the R.H. Arrandale Post 7914 V.F.W. in Sidney and the Charles L. Jacobi Post No. 183 American Legion, in Sidney.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara J. Wilson of Bainbridge; a daughter, Beverly A. Barnes of Denville, N.J.; a son, Charles B. Wilson of Lake Hopatcong, N.J.; two sisters, Cathering VanRiper of Bainbridge and Dorothy Miller of Pompano Beach, Fla.; a brother, John J. Wilson of Maine; a grandson, Jeffrey Barnes of Denville, N.J.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Thomas, August and Fred, and a sister, Ethel.

Funeral services will be held at 9 p.m. Friday evening, March 13, 1998 at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Mr. Nelson Park, chaplain at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, will officiate.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday morning, March 14, 1988 at the Evergreen Cemetery, in Morristown, N.J. The Rev. Larry Chamberlain, pastor of the Morris Plains Presbyterian Church in Morris Plains, N.J., will officiate.

Friends are invited to call at their convenience Friday at the funeral chapel. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. The V.F.W. Post No. 7914 will conduct memorial services at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, N.Y. 13815 or to the R.H. Arrandale Post No. 7914, 133 W. Main St., Sidney, N.Y. 13838.

George Leslie Couse
COOPERSTOWN — George Leslie Couse, 98, most recently and formerly of Oneonta, died Tuesday evening, March 10, 1998 at The Meadows, where he had resided since 1992.

He was born Nov. 24, 1899 in Oneonta, the son of Frank and Anna (Gerling) Couse. He married Reta Lillian Galer on Aug. 17, 1927 in West Oneonta. She died May 2, 1993.

In his younger years, Mr. Couse was employed at the Oneonta Dairy and at Gilbert Lake State Park. During the war years, he left Gilbert Lake State Park and assumed a position with Scintilla (Bendix) in Sidney for a couple of years.

His love for the outdoors prompted him to return to Gilbert Lake State Park. He resumed his career there as a sawyer, a position that was responsible for supplying the lumber for the cabins (still in existence) at Gilbert Lake and many other state parks.

In 1945 he was promoted to caretaker and then superintendent in 1950, a position he held until his retirement in 1960. After his retirement, he enjoyed his leisure time by traveling with his family to places such as Alaska, Europe and Canada, while always finding time to hunt and fish. To date he still holds the record, listed in the New York State Big Buck Club, for the third-largest scored buck in Otsego County.

He was a member of the Laurens United Presbyterian Church. On March 1, 1946, he was initiated as a member of the Laurens Masonic Lodge No. 548. He remained very active for many years, and served as master from 1951 to 1952, along with being awarded the position of Grand Representative of the Grand Lodge of the Dominican Republic. He was also a member of the Laurens Fire Department.

Mr. Couse is survived by a daughter, Jane Luchessi of Milford; a son and daughter-in-law, George R. and Carol Couse of West Oneonta; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Wendell and Stanley Couse.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 14, 1998 at 11 a.m. at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Donald T. Buddle officiating.

Burial will be later in the spring in the West Oneonta Cemetery.

Friends may call Friday, March 13, 1998 from 7-9 p.m. at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, at which time the family will be in attendance. The Laurens Masonic Lodge No. 548 will conduct a ritual service at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Laurens Fire Department.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.

Lee MacDonald
CASA GRANDE, Ariz. — Lee MacDonald, 82, of Casa Grande, Ariz. passed away March 5, 1998.

He was born June 16, 1915 in Cooperstown.

Mr. MacDonald was in the automobile industry, lodging and rental properties for many years. He was a member of the Casa Grande Methodist Church, a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge No. 1957 of Casa Grande, Ariz., and former owner of Mac's Drive-In.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Iona MacDonald of Casa Grande, Ariz.; one daughter, Dawn VanZandt of Upland, Calif.; one son, Douglas MacDonald of Casa Grande, Ariz.; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by both parents, two sons and one sister.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, March 13, 1998 at Simes Mortuaries Casa Grande Chapel, 1575 E. Florence Blvd., Casa Grande, Ariz.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, March 12, 1998 at the chapel.

Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, March 13, 1998 at Valley of the Sun Memorial Park, Chandler, 1094 E. Chandler Heights Road, Chandler, Ariz.

The Rev. Larry W. Baker will officiate the services.

Funeral arrangements are by Simes Mortuaries Casa Grande Chapel, 1585 E. Florence Blvd., Casa Grande, Ariz.

Gary R. Butts
OTEGO — Inadvertently omitted in the obituary of Gary R. Butts, who died March 2, 1998, was that he is also survived by his mother-in-law, Helen T. Dyckman of Greenlawn Long Island; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Slavin and her husband James of Huntington Long Island. He was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 259.

Eileen Ussak
WEST DAVENPORT — Mrs. Eileen Ussak, 78, of West Davenport, died Wednesday morning, March 11, 1998 at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Emergency Room.

She was born Dec. 24, 1919 in Norwich, England, the daughter of Max and Louise (Lang) Brenner. She married Robert Ussak Feb. 4, 1945 in Norwich, England.

Eileen was a British war nurse during World War II and came to the United States on the First War Bride Ship in 1946. She had been a business office manager for the Peninsula Hospital Center in Edgemere for 15 years, retiring in 1983. Prior to moving to West Davenport, where she had resided since her retirement, Eileen had been a resident of Far Rockaway. She had been a hospital volunteer at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, for many years, until about a year ago when her health had declined.

Eileen was a member of Temple Beth El, Oneonta and a member of the Sisterhood at Temple Beth El.

She was a devoted mother and grandmother.

Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Robert Ussak of West Davenport; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard Ussak of Tucson, Ariz. and Michael and AnnMarie Ussak of Edison, N.J.; one brother, Victor Brenner of England; three sisters, Mariam Cohen, Minda Alexander and Pearl Geller, all of England; two granddaughters, Amanda and Marianne; also several nieces and nephews, including Judith Salinson of England.

At Mrs. Ussak's request, there will be no funeral services.

Mrs. Ussak will be cremated at the Hillington Crematory, Morris.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to Pindars Corners Emergency Squad, Route 23, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 c/o Sterling Carrington.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Anna M. Drannbauer
STAMFORD — Anna M. Drannbauer, 76, of Bruce Hill Road, Stamford, died Thursday, March 12, 1998 at Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

She was born June 20, 1921 in Dinslaken, Germany, the daughter of Alfred and Maria Brandt. She married Edward Drannbauer Sr. on June 2, 1950 in Frankfort, Germany.

Anna resided in Stamford for the past 24 years, moving there from Queens. She was an avid gardener.

She is survived by her husband, Edward Drannbauer Sr., of Stamford; a daughter, Ladora Drannbauer of Stamford; a son and daughter-in-law, William and Lisa Drannbauer of Phoenix, Ariz., six grandchildren, Edward and Donald Van Etten of Stamford, William, Melissa and Matthew Drannbauer of Phoenix, Ariz., and Edward Drannbauer II of Florida; also several nieces and nephews in Germany.

She was predeceased by a son, Edward Drannbauer Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 16, 1998 at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 W. Main St., Stamford, with the Rev. Lynn Ash, pastor of St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Laurens, officiating.

Burial will be held in the Stamford Cemetery, Stamford.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home Sunday afternoon and evening at their convenience. The family will be in attendance between 7-9 p.m.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Anna's memory to the R.A. Robinson Emergency Squad, Stamford, N.Y. 12167.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Nellie (Hall) Kraus
OTEGO — Mrs. Nellie (Hall) Kraus, 99, formerly of Otego, died Thursday afternoon, March 12, 1998 at The Meadows, Cooperstown.

She was born Nov. 8, 1898 in Burlington, the daughter of Andy and Elbertie (Briggs) Hall. On Sept. 1, 1917 she married Clark Kraus.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Walter and Geneva Kraus of Greene; a grandson, Gordon Kraus of Reno, Nev.; two granddaughters, Carol Volk of Weissenohoe, Germany and Elaine Kraus-Kissam of Batesville, Va.; also five great grandchildren, Ann and Anita Volk, Karen and Richard Kraus, Ethan Kissam and several cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband Clark, and daughter, Zada Bemis.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 16, 1998 from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. The Rev. Wilfred L. Lyon, retired pastor of Middlefield, will officiate.

Friends may call at the funeral home Monday, March 16, 1998 after 10 a.m. until service time, when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Mrs. Kraus will be placed in the Bookhout Funeral Home private vault to await spring burial in the Hartwick Cemetery, Hartwick.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Lloyd P. Weir
ONEONTA — A memorial service for Lloyd P. Weir will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Society, 12 Ford Ave., Oneonta on Saturday, March 14 at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Judith L. Quarles officiating.

Flowers are welcome. A reception with light refreshments will follow the service.

Michele Rossi
ONEONTA — Michele Rossi, 69, of Oneonta died March 12, 1998 at the Countryside Care Center in Delhi after a lengthy illness.
He was born Oct. 14, 1928 in Alvignono, Italy, the son of Rafael and Carmela (Landino) Rossi.

He married Victoria Citriniti on June 7, 1958 in Utica.

Mr. Rossi owned and operated his tailor shop on Main Street in Oneonta since arriving in the United States from Italy in 1952 and has been an area resident since that time.

He was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

In his earlier years in Italy he was a well-known soccer player and after arriving in the United States was a soccer referee in the area for many years.

He is survived by his wife at home; three sons, Ralph and Anna Rossi of Oneonta, Anthony and Victoria Rossi of Palm Beach, Fla., and Joseph Rossi of New York; one granddaughter, Gabriella Rossi; one sister, Madelina DeSarbo of Hollywood, Fla.; two brothers, Anthony Rossi of Cleveland, Ohio, and Pasquali Rossi of Parma, Ohio, as well as several nephews, nieces and cousins.

Funeral services will be Monday, March 16 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta. The Rev. Brian Raiche, associate pastor of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta after 3 p.m. Sunday. The family will be in attendance from 7-9 p.m. Sunday.

The family requests no flowers. Contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 96 Spruce St., Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Pauline Reynolds
COBLESKILL — Pauline Reynolds, 79, of Campus Court, died Thursday, March 12 at her daughter's home in Seward after a long illness.

Mrs. Reynolds was born Feb. 10, 1919 in Brooklyn and was the daughter of Ephrem and Jacqueline (Michnevich) Dostanko. She retired to Schoharie County in 1986 after working for a doctor's office on Long Island.

She is predeceased by her husband, Paul Reynolds, who died in 1967.

Survivors are a daughter, Kathryn Phillips of Dorloo; a son, Peter Reynolds of Islip Terrace; a brother, William Wolenchuk of Victorville, Calif.; three granddaughters, Laurie Reynolds of Islip Terrace, Jennifer Mahoney of Buffalo and Sarah Phillips of Dorloo; a grandson and his wife, Sean and Chrissy Mahone of Hamburg; and also three great-grandchildren, Shannon, Melissa and Cassidy Mahoney of Buffalo.

A funeral service will be held at the family's convenience. Friends may call Sunday, March 15, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 68 Elm St., Cobleskill, N.Y. 12043.

A spring burial will take place in Zion Rural Cemetery, town of Seward.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 877, Cobleskill, N.Y. 12043 or the Catskill Area Hospice, P.O. Box 39, Cobleskill, N.Y. 12043.

Niona A. Scoville
WALTON — Niona A. Scoville, 88, of Walton, died Friday, March 13, 1998 at her home.

She was born Jan. 3, 1910 in Walton to Frank and Jennie (Valentine) McCall.

She married Frank J. Scoville on Sept. 3, 1927 in Walton.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Walton.

She is survived by her daughter, Martha Puffer of Bainbridge; a son, Frances (Bud) Scoville of Walton; grandchildren, Lonnie and his wife Cathy Puffer of Walton, Keith and his wife Joan Puffer of Bainbridge; Kathy and her husband Dale of Unadilla and Gleason Jr. and his wife Diane Puffer of Unadilla; four grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren; and her sister, Bernita Budine of Oneonta, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 16 at 11 a.m. at Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. with the Rev. L. Lawrence Dunlap officiating. Burial will be in the Walton Cemetery.

Friends may call Sunday from 7-9 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice or the Walton Emergency Squad.
