Carolyn A. Gorsch
ONEONTA — Carolyn A. Gorsch, 68, of Oneonta died Friday, March 13, 1998 at Fox Hospital after a lengthy illness.

She was born Sept. 11, 1929 in Oneonta, the daughter of Wilbert and Irena (Youngs) Pogue.

She married Marvin Gorsch on Sept. 3, 1949 in Oneonta.

Mrs. Gorsch was a devoted mother, wife and homemaker and was a lifelong Oneonta area resident.

She is survived by her husband at home; two sons, Terry M. and Daniel W. Gorsch of Oneonta; one daughter, Donna D. Gorsch of Raleigh, N.C.; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Naomi Parliman of Jacksonville, Fla., and Eleanor Coy of Wilmington, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 16 at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta. Burial will be in Plains Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Nancy Belle Cady
SOUTH NEW BERLIN — Mrs. Nancy Belle Cady, 81, of 2615 State Highway 8, South New Berlin at White Store, died on Friday in the Chenango Memorial Hospital of Norwich.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. from the Fahy Funeral Home of Norwich.

Friends are invited to call at the Funeral Home on Sunday from 12:30 until the time of service.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the South New Berlin Emergency Squad.

Richard E. Cole
ANDES — Richard Esmond Cole of Andes and Ocala, Fla. died of cancer March 13, 1998 at his home in Andes. He was 77.
He was born July 23, 1920 in Oneonta, the son of Floyd R. and Estella Berner Cole.

He married Elizabeth Bloodgood on June 26, 1942 in Andes. She survives.

Dick graduated from Oneonta High School, Class of 1939 and had been a member of the touring Arabian Nights Acrobatic team. He then worked for G.E. in Schenectady as a tool and die maker until 1948, when he moved to Andes to run the Bloodgood Farm. In 1967 he became a real estate salesman for the Redmond Agency in Arkville and was also a skilled Stonecutter of Catskill Mountain Blue Stone.

Dick enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a past commander of the James D. Calhoun Post American Legion in Andes. He was also a Boy Scout leader and a member of the Board of Education at Andes Central School from 1961-1971. He had been a volunteer fireman in Andes, a Mason of the Delhi Lodge No. 439, a member of the Tremperskill Rod and Gun Club and the Andes United Presbyterian Church.

Dick's passion was golf and he and wife Betty were charter members of the Delhi College Golf Course. They were able to winter since 1973 in Florida, where they have a home within eyeshot of hole No. 1 at Silver Springs Shores.

Surviving besides his wife are a son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Susan Cole of Andes; two daughters and sons-in-law, Dona and Larry Etsitty of St. Michael's, Ariz. and JoAnn and Tom Kaufman of Delhi; seven grandchildren, Rob, Kylle and Casey Cole, Jennifer, Julie and JaNelle Etsitty and Terry Kaufman; two sisters, Jayne Torrey of Oneonta and Juanita Collins of Ft. Ann; a brother, Robert Cole of Andes and several nephews and nieces.

He was predeceased by a half-brother, Kenneth Cole of Binghamton.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 17 at 11 a.m. at the Andes United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Daniel McCollister, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Andes Cemetery at a later date.

Friends may call today at the Jester-Stanley Funeral Home in Andes, where the family will be in attendance from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Masonic Service will be held at 7 tonight.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Catskill Area Hospice, 20 Elm St., Delhi, N.Y. 13753 for their professional and comforting care; to the Andes United Presbyterian Church or to Delhi Senior Legion Baseball, P.O. Box 161, Delhi, a program that Dick's son and three grandsons are involved with.

Alice Drake
LITTLE FALLS — Alice Drake, 75, of Frankfort, passed away at Little Falls Hospital on Saturday, March 14, 1998.

She was born Jan. 18, 1923 in the Milford area, the daughter of Lester and Anita (Willsey) Sargeant.

Alice was currently living in Frankfort but has resided in Florida and Texas. She enjoyed traveling as well as crocheting.

She is survived by her husband, Douglas Burgess of Frankfort; a son, Paul D. Drake of Little Falls; a grandchild, Carly Drake of Little Falls; a brother, Howard Sargeant of Ilion; an aunt, Sophie Lockrow of Albany and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Weldon Sargeant.

At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours or funeral service. There will be a gathering of family and friends at the home of Paul Drake, R.D. 3, Box 187 on Dallenbeck Road in Little Falls at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may send contributions in her name to the American Cancer Society or to Paul Drake at the address above.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Albert Green Fielder
MARYLAND — Albert Green Fielder, 83, formerly of Dunedin, Fla. died Saturday, March 14, 1998 at the Oneonta Nursing Home, Oneonta.

He was born Jan. 22, 1915 in Grayson County, Va. the son of Rush and Margaret (Shupe) Fielder.

He married Kathryn Marie Welch on Oct. 14, 1939. She died Oct. 3, 1993.

He moved from Springfield, Va. to Dunedin, Fla. in 1975. In 1995, he moved to the Oneonta Nursing Home.

He served on the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Force, retiring as a lieutenant in 1966.

He was a member of the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Clearwater, Fla.

He is survived by a son and his wife, Douglas Stratton and Dorothy Scott Fielder of Maryland; a grandson, William Todd Fielder of Boston and a brother, Wythe M. Fielder of Clearwater, Fla.

A funeral service will be Wednesday, March 18, 1998 at the Moss-Feaster Funeral Home, 1330 Main St., Dunedin, Fla.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mr. Fielder to the American Cancer Society, Southern District Office, 57 Front St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905-4704.

Cynthia J. Harrington
WALTON — Cynthia J. Harrington, 55, of Walton, died Friday, March 13, 1998 at her home after a long battle with cancer.

She was born Nov. 18, 1942 in Andes, the daughter of Paul C. and Lillian (Reynolds) Gray.

She married Michael Harrington on Oct. 11, 1969 in New Kingston.

She worked as a nurse at Delaware Valley Hospital and was a support person for the Walton Fire Department.

She is survived by her husband, Michael Harringtin of Walton; son, Michael and his wife, Cynthia Harrington of Walton; son, Melvin Harrington of Walton; daughter, Dallis and her husband Mike McCall of Walton; two grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Hunter McCall of Walton; sister, Rebecca Misner of Arkville; brothers, Charles Gray of Delhi and Gary Gray of Delhi and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 17 at 11 a.m. at Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. The Rev. Bert Moore will officiate. Burial will be later in the Walton Cemetery.

Friends may call today from 7-9 p.m., when the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice or the Walton Fire Department.

Donald W. Robinson
COOPERSTOWN — Donald W. Robinson, PhD., 88, of Willow Street in Hyde Park and formerly of Edmeston, died early Monday morning, March 16, 1998 at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born Aug. 1, 1909 in Woodhaven, L.I., a son of Dr. William S.V. and Charlotte (Johnson) Robinson.

He married Imogene (Jean) Petersen on April 12, 1947 in West Orange, N.J.

Don was raised in Woodhaven, L.I. and attended and later graduated from the Eastern Baptist College and Theological Seminary. He then went on to pursue a career in music and received his education at the University of Pennsylvania, Combs College of Music, the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music and New York University. During this period he also served his country during World War II in the United States Army.

After teaching several schools and colleges in New Jersey and serving as Director of Music at the Chestertown (Maryland) High School, Don and Jean moved to Edmeston where he accepted the position of music coordinator at the Edmeston Central School. During the 25 years he held this position, he prepared many students for admission to the Eastman School of Music, the Juilliard School of Music, the New England School of Music and many other outstanding schools.

An active member of the American Guild of Organists, Don was a member of the Central New York Chapter in Utica and served as Dean of this chapter for many years. During his ter as Dean he organized the Region II Convention which involved many of the churches in the Utica area where recitals were given by outstanding organists.

Don became a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Cooperstown on March 28, 1956 and was later appointed organist and choirmaster, a position he held for 25 years. In his tenure there, he presented many notable music works.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jean of Hyde Park; one sister, Mrs. Ethel Roy of Great Falls, Va.; one brother, Douglas Robinson of Phillipsburg, N.J.; two nieces, Maxine Sinkbeil of Phillipsburg, N.J. and Kathy LaPlante of Rensselaer and one nephew, Robert Robinson of Delanson.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 19 at the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown with the Rev. Judith Smith Ray, interim pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Cooperstown, officiating. Interment will be at a later date in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Music Fund, 25 Church St., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Kenneth L. Eastwood
UNADILLA — Kenneth L. Eastwood, 80, of Covered Bridge Road, R.D. 2, 149A, Unadilla, died Sunday, March 15, 1998 at his home after an extended illness.

A resident of the village of Guilford for over 70 years, he attended the Guilford Schools and following his schooling worked initially as a silo constructor for the Craine Silo Corp. of Norwich and later as an ice cutter for the R.D. Dexheimer Corp. in Guilford.

Mr. Eastwood subsequently went to work for the Scintilla Corp. of Sidney serving as a master machinist in the Magneto Department and retiring after 39 years of service in 1980. During his years with Scintilla-Bendix, he was a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers and the union recently awarded Mr. Eastwood with his 50 year membership plaque and pin.

Mr. Eastwood had made his home on Covered Bridge Road in Unadilla for the last eight years.

Well-known as a devoted fan of bluegrass music, Ken and his wife, Beatrice traveled throughout the eastern seaboard following the bluegrass festivals and having the good fortune of becoming close friends of many other bluegrass fans as well as famous bluegrass artists like Bill Monroe and Jim and Jess McReynolds. Ken became a serious student of bluegrass traditions through his own personal involvement in music as a skilled guitar player for the last 60 years.

Born on Feb. 13, 1918, at his family home on Depot Street in Guilford, he was the son of Earl Eastwood and Carrie Iva (Aldrich) Eastwood.

On June 25, 1954, in Mount Upton, he married Beatrice Eggleston Eastwood, who survives.

Besides his wife, Beatrice Eastwood of Unadilla, he is survived by one brother, Harold Eastwood of Hamilton, as well as by nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, Francis Earl Eastwood, who died on July 6, 1979.

Funeral services for Mr. Eastwood will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. from the Fahy Funeral Home of Norwich. The Rev. Donna Joy Schmid, pastor of the Unadilla United Methodist Church, will officiate.

Burial will be in the spring in the Pioneer Cemetery of North Guilford.

Friends are invited to call at the Fahy Funeral Home on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 10 a.m.

It is suggested that memorial contributions be made to a favorite charity.

Esther Jenkins
WALTON — Esther Jenkins, 82, of Walton, died Monday, March 15, 1998 at Delaware Valley Hospital, Walton.

She was born Nov. 4, 1915 in Binghamton, the daughter of James and Wilma (Sherman) Henderson.

She worked at Breakstones in Walton. She was a member of the Veterans Club of Walton, the Trout Creek Senior Citizens and the Royal Rockers. She also sold Avon products for many years.

She is survived by her daughter, Earline Gray of Walton; daughter, Joyce Mack of Maryland; daughter, Sandra Gray of Walton and daughter, Gail Furgason of Sidney; 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Millie Hitchcock of Walton, several nieces and nephews and a special friend, Daisy Wagner of Walton.

She was predeceased by two brothers, June and Willis Henderson and a sister, Martha Roof.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, March 18 at 11 a.m. at the Walton Cemetery with the Rev. Paul Cronin, officiating.

Calling hours will be Tuesday, March 17 from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the Walton Fire Department or the Organization of your choice.

Diego Avanzato
ONEONTA — Diego Avanzato, 78, of Oneonta, died Monday, March 16, 1998 at his residence.
He was born Nov. 9, 1919, the son of Salvatore and Antonia (Milazzo) Avanzato in Canicatti, Italy.

He married Giuseppa Giardina on Dec. 31, 1941 in Canicatti, Italy.

Diego began a career as a tailor at the age of 11 and at the age of 14 after the death of his father he became the sole supporter of his family. He also taught tailoring to children in the orphanage of his hometown of Canicatti, Italy. Diego was a great lover of music, he especially enjoyed the opera. While living in Italy he was a first clarinet player and a band leader. His love for music inspired him to arrange many religious feasts. This passion was an everlasting element of his life.

During World War II, Diego served in the Italian Army.

In 1966, he moved to the United States and continued his career as a tailor. He was first employed at the Oneonta Dress Factory, and for nine years he was affiliated with the former Winans Men's Shop. Since 1977, he was self-employed and operated his business out of two local dry cleaners, Quality Cleaners and later Oneonta Cleaners, until he retired in 1992.

Diego was a member of St. Mary's Church and the Italian American Club.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Giuseppa Avanzato of Oneonta; his children and their spouses, Antoinette and Giacinto Ragona of Oneonta, Salvatore and Josephine Avanzato of Petersburg, N.J., Vincenzo and Ruth Avanzato of Oneonta and Antonio and Rosemarie Avanzato of Oneonta; a sister, Rosaria LaLicata of Canicatti, Italy; a brother, Antonio Avanzato of Agriento, Italy and his grandchildren, Gaetano, Dino and Jo-Jo Ragona, Angela Minette, Dino, Giacomo and Joey Avanzato; Diego, Jeanette and Giuliva Avanzato, Olivia and Gianluca Avanzato. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Thursday, March 19 at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, with the Rev. Brian Raiche, associate pastor, officiating.

Burial will be later in the spring in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call Wednesday, March 18 at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta from 7-9 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.
