Mildred E. Caine
ONEONTA — Miss Mildred E. Caine, 92, of Oneonta, died Wednesday morning, Dec. 3, 1997 at the A.O. Fox Memorial Nursing Home in Oneonta.

She was born Dec. 28, 1904 in Oneonta, the daughter of Walter and Emily (Gay) Caine.

Mildred graduated from Oneonta Normal School and from Columbia University in New York. She was a retired school teacher, having taught for many years in the Albany School Districts.

She was a member of the Main Street Baptist Church, Oneonta, for 79 years, a member of the Sunshine Class and also the Ladies Circle at the church. Mildred enjoyed gardening as well as traveling.

Survivors include one sister, Evelyn Slawson, of A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta. The extended family of her sister Evelyn includes Virginia Slawson Cook (Dorwin) of Muskegon, Mich., Janice and David Clark of Spring Lake, Mich., David and Sheryl Northrop of St. Joseph, Mich. and dear friends Donald and Evelyn Knowles.

Miss Caine will be placed in the Bookhout Funeral Home Private Burial Vault to await burial in the spring in the Glenwood Cemetery. The Rev. Gary Bonebrake will have a committal service in the spring at the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to The Main Street Baptist Church, 333 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in memory of Mildred.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Evelyn M. Earl
UNADILLA — Evelyn M. Earl, 85, of Unadilla died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1997 at Elizabeth Church Manor, Binghamton.

She was born June 15, 1912 in East Syracuse, the daughter of Fred and Mary (Joa) Temple. She was married to J. Stanley Earl Aug. 23, 1949 in Ithaca. Mr. Earl died July 15, 1986.

Mrs. Earl was a graduate of Cornell University and was a former home economics teacher in the Unadilla Central School system. She was a member of the Unadilla United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a son, James G. Palmer of Alpaus; two stepsons, James C. Earl and Donald S. Earl, both of Unadilla; a stepdaughter Dorothy M. Earl of Windsor; a sister Kay Willis of York, Penn.; a grandson, Christopher Palmer and several stepgrandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 1997 at the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla, with the Rev. Donna Joy Schmid, pastor of the Unadilla United Methodist Church, officiating.

Interment will be later in the Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla, at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla United Methodist Church or a charity of ones choice.

Arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Richard `Whitey' Earl
SIDNEY CENTER — Richard "Whitey" Earl, 66, of RD 2, Sidney Center, passed away peacefully Thursday morning, Dec. 4, 1997 at his residence.

He was born May 14, 1931 in Binghamton. Whitey was the son of Fenton and Clara Gladys Eggleston Earl. On Oct. 7, 1951, he married Barbara Schriver in Sidney Center. She predeceased him on June 18, 1987.

For several years, Whitey owned and operated a dairy farm in Sidney Center. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Mr. Earl was involved in the organization of the Tug of War for the Delaware County Fair Association, Walton. In August of this year he was awarded the Sportsmans Award by the fair committee.

He was a member of the Sidney Lodge 2175 B.P.O.E. and served as its bingo and kitchen chairperson. He was also a member of the Sidney Center Rod and Gun Club. For several years, Mr. Earl played baseball with the Cannonsville Town Team.

He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, David and Kathie Earl of Sidney Center; two daughters and son-in-law, Patricia Ann Earl of Sidney and Cindy and Bruce Armour of Sidney; a sister and brother-in-law, Edna and Robert Pomeroy of Sidner Center; a companion, Lillian Johnson of Sidney Center; also five grandchildren, one great granddaughter, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Douglas and Fenton J. Earl, and one sister, Sandra Scofie.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, 1997 from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney with the Rev. Robert Conway, of Unadilla, officiating. Burial will be in the Walton Cemetery.

Friends are invited to call at their convenience Saturday at the funeral chapel. The family will be in attendance from 7-9 p.m. The Sidney Elks Lodge will conduct memorial services at the funeral chapel Saturday evening at 8 p.m.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Helene K. Landers
SIDNEY — Mrs. Helene K. Landers, 84, of 25 Hatfield Ave., Sidney, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday morning, Dec. 3, 1997 at her residence.

Helene was born Oct. 30, 1913 in Sidney. She was the daughter of the late Myron and Clara Enos Kipp. Helene was married to Charles H. Landers, who predeceased her Aug. 7, 1974.

She was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Sidney.

She is survived by a son, John C. Landers of Malibu, Calif.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Burke of Horseheads, Marcia and William Emerson of Pinehurst, N.C. and Robin and Joseph Barbera of Schenectady; a sister, Marjorie Walling of Binghamton; a brother, Laurence Kipp of Binghamton; three grandsons, Matthew Burke of Portland, Ore., Michael Burke of Horseheads, and Adam Barbera of Schenectady; also several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 1997 from St. Paul's Episcopal Church, River Street, Sidney. The Rev. Father Ward Letteney, rector, officiating. Burial will be in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney, at the convenience of her family.

Friends are invited to call from 7-9 p.m. Friday at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with her family in attendance.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Sidney Emergency Squad, River Street, Sidney, N.Y. 13838 or to the Delaware Valley Humane Society, East Main Street, Sidney, N.Y. 13838.

Joseph Kersmanc
EFFINGHAM, Ill. — Joseph Kersmanc, 73, of Effingham, Ill., passed away at 3:25 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1997 at Lakeland Health Care Center in Effingham, Ill.

He was born March 8, 1924 in Worcester, a son of Frank and Katie (Susnik) Kersmanc, Sr. He first married Donna Mae (McMorris) in 1958. She predeceased him in death in 1985. He married Wanda Buckels in 1987.

Mr. Kersmanc was in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired from the Effingham Water Authority as a custodian.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda; daughter, Mrs. Dan (Becky) Bergfeld of Monticello; two stepdaughters, Mrs. James (Becky) Urfer of Claremont and Mrs. Ron (Kenna) Urfer of Olney; and two brothers, Frank Kersmanc, Jr. and John Kersmanc, both of Worcester; also seven grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, his first wife and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 1997 at the Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham, Ill. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday also at the funeral home. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Effingham, Ill.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation in Joseph's memory.

Dorothy H. Peck
SIDNEY — Dorothy H. Peck, 89, a resident of the Skilled Nursing Facility, The Hospital, Sidney, formerly of 9 Maple Ave., passed away peacefully Wednesday afternoon Dec. 3, 1997 at her residence.

She was born May 30, 1908 in Meredith. Miss Peck was the daughter of the late George and Mary Johnston Peck.

For 41 years, she was a teacher for the Sidney Central Schools. She retired in 1970.

She was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church, Sidney, the Sidney B.P.W. and the Sidney Chapter of the D.A.R.

She is survived by her cousin and her husband Carol and Leon Ackley of Oneonta.

Miss Peck was predeceased by her sister, Ruth E. Peck, and her brother, Charles Peck.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, 1997 from the First Congregational Church, Sidney with the Rev. Richard Lake officiating.

Burial will be in the spring in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the First Congregational Church, Sidney, N.Y. 13838.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Byron J. Green
ONEONTA — Byron J. Green, 76, of Oneonta, died unexpectedly Wednesday evening, Dec. 3, 1997 at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

He was the son of Jesse A. and Elizabeth Calkins Green.

Except for military service in World War II, he was a lifelong resident of Morris Road and Oneonta. He was a well-known violinist and played in local and regional orchestras as well as teaching privately.

Mr. Green is survived by his wife, Janet; one sister, Elizabeth Green Caldine of Fairfax, Va.; one brother, Thaddeus A. Green of Greenville, S.C.; five nephews and one niece, Stephen, David, Mark and Kathleen Caldine and Paul and Bruce Green; also five great-nephews and three great-nieces.

There will be no calling hours. Mr. Green's body has been cremated. A private memorial service will be held later at the convenience of his family.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes of Oneonta and Otego.

Mildred Lentz
FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Mildred Lentz, 73, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., formerly a 35-year resident of Sidney, died Nov. 28, 1997.

Mildred was born in Norfolk, Va., the daughter of Mrs. Louise Robbins and the late Herbert Robbins.

She graduated form Sullins College in Bristol, Va. and worked several years during World War II at the Norfolk Naval Base as secretary to several admirals. She came to Sidney in 1947, moving to Florida in 1980.

Mildred is survived by her husband, Eugene; daughters, Candis Arthur of Morrow, Ga. and Cynthia Newell of Maryland; a son, Glen "Whit" Whitaker Jr. of Sidney; two stepdaughters, Cathleen Barnhart of Elizabethtown and Dr. Candis Isberner of Carbondale, Ill; a sister Doris Gibson of Norfolk, Va; and nine grandchildren.

Arrangements are made by Kracer Funeral Home, Pompano Beach, Fla.

Michael Justin Hurlburt
OTEGO — Michael Justin Hurlburt, 18, of Otego died suddenly Friday, Dec. 5, 1997 at his residence.

Michael was born June 28, 1979 in Oneonta, the son of Stuart and Su Anne (Ford) Hurlburt.

Michael was a freshman at SUNY Morrisville, where he was attending school studying forestry. He was a 1997 graduate of Unatego High School where he was a member of the junior and senior varsity football teams. The past four years he received letters throughout his high school years in football. Michael was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his parents, Stuart and Su Anne Hurlburt of Otego; his brother, Adam and fiance, Christal of Otego; his niece, Alexis Elizabeth of Otego; his maternal grandparents, Sue and Dick Ford of Otego; paternal grandparents, Fonda and Stuart Hurlburt of Otego; great-grandmother, Frances Decker of Delhi; several aunts and uncles, Lorraine Turner of Rotterdam, Karen and Doug Brown of Otego, David and Judy Hurlburt of Oneonta, Doug and Sara Hurlburt of Otego, Ernie and Tammy Frankhauser of Kingston and Rick and Denise Ford of Wisconsin; his special friends, Diana DeJoy, Kevin Sousa and Sean Coleman, all of Otego and also by several great-aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral and committal services will be held at noon, Monday, Dec. 8 with the Rev. Fred Albrecht, pastor of the Otego United Methodist Church, Otego, officiating from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 30 River St., Otego.

Michael will be cremated at the Hillington Crematory, Morris.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 30 River St., Otego on Monday, Dec. 8 from 10 a.m.-noon prior to the funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy be made to the Michael Hurlburt Memorial Fund, c/o Unatego Junior-Senior High School, Route 7, Otego, N.Y. 13820, Attn.: Mrs. Pitel. Contributions will be used to fund a scholarship for students interested in a forestry career.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Barbara A. Loop
WESTFORD — Barbara A. Loop, 55, of Westford, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997 at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany.

She was born Dec. 12, 1941 in Wallington, N.J., the daughter of Victor and Mary (Sikora) Bascardi.

She married Richard Loop in 1965 in New Jersey.

Mrs. Loop has lived in Westford for 20 years. Previously she and her family lived in Sidney Center for five years.

Mrs. Loop was employed at Bassett Healthcare Hospital in Cooperstown as a phlebotomist for 15 years.

She was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Schenevus and the Schoharie County Chippers, a wood-carving club. She also enjoyed fishing and crafts.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Loop of Westford; a daughter, Victoria Ann Loop of Westford; a sister, Gloria McKown of Ohio; three nephews, William, Thomas and Michael McKown, and several aunts, uncles and cousins and many beloved friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997 at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Schenevus.

The Rev. William Crandall, pastor of St. Mary's Church, will be celebrant and the Rev. Arthur Moraes, a visiting priest from England, will be concelebrant.

Burial will take place in the spring at the Schenevus Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held at the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus on Sunday, Dec. 7, 1997 from 7-9 p.m. and on Monday, Dec. 8 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A recitation of the Rosary will be held Monday evening at the funeral home at 8:30 p.m.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mrs. Loop to the American Diabetes Association, Eastern Regional Office, 50 Colvin Ave., Albany, N.Y. 12206-1106 or the American Heart Association, 120 Lomond Ct., Lomond Place Office Park, Utica, N.Y. 13502.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.
