Stewart DeGroat Sr.
BUTTERNUTS — Stewart Tracy DeGroat, 84, of the town of Butternuts, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 1997 at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born Dec. 28, 1912 in Lake View, Pa., the son of Nelson and Anna (Tucker) DeGroat. He was married to Florence Reed in 1929. She died May 11, 1973.

He was a lumberjack employed by the George L. Decker Lumber Company of Rockaway, N.J. for many years and had also worked for the Boonton Feed Company of Boonton, N.J. for several years. He operated a small engine repair business for a period of time.

Mr. DeGroat was an avid fisherman and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. He had been a member of the New Jersey Forest Fire Service in his younger years and had lived in the Butternuts Valley for the past 20 years.

Survivors include three daughters, Alice Peer and her husband Kenneth, Ruth DeGroat, all of South New Berlin, and Sara Jane Williams of Roxboro, N.C.; five sons, Eugene (Shorty) DeGroat of Norwich, Stewart (Pete) DeGroat and his wife, Nancy of Bainbridge, Arthur, Henry L. and Frederick DeGroat, all of South New Berlin; a sister-in-law, Kathy DeGroat of Bud Lake, N.J.; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.

He was predeceased by a son, Henry (Jim) DeGroat.

Funeral services will be on Thursday, Dec. 11, 1997 at 2 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris with the Rev. Wayne Burnett officiating.

Calling hours will be from noon on Thursday until service time at 2 p.m.

Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.

Thelma Scott
ONEONTA — Thelma Scott, 96, of Delhi and formerly of Oneonta, died Dec. 8, 1997 at the Countryside Care Center in Delhi following a lengthy illness.

She was born Feb. 2, 1901 in Stamford, the daughter of Leon and Mae (Burdick) Smith. She married Harry L. Scott Nov. 19, 1918 in Oneonta. Mr. Scott died April 14, 1963.

Mrs. Scott was a resident of Stamford in her younger years and was an employee of the Quality Silk Mill there for several years. For 20 years prior to her retirement in 1965, she was a resident of Oneonta and worked at the Oneonta Dress Factory.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Joseph (Marion) LeVeille of RD 1 Maryland, and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1964; a sister, Josephine McDougell in 1963; and a son, Frances Scott in 1985.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, 1997 at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Douglas Gray, supply minister for the Garrattsville United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be later in Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends may call the funeral home after 3 p.m. Wednesday. The family will be in attendance from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday evening.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bloomville Fire Department, Bloomville, N.Y. 13739.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Elizabeth M. Gray
MORAVIA — Elizabeth M. Gray, 89, of Millstream Court, Moravia, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 1997 in Cayuga Medical Center, Ithaca.

Mrs. Gray was born July 28, 1908 in Philadelphia, Pa., the daughter of the late John and Sarah Ann Johnston McClain. She was a former resident of Delhi and had lived in Moravia since 1991.

She had been employed as a secretary at SUNY Delhi until her retirement. She was a member of the United Ministry of Delhi and Christ United Methodist Church of Locke and Moravia.

Mrs. Gray's husband, the Rev. Everett D. Gray, died in February 1989.

She is survived by two sons and thier wives, John and Ingrida Gray of Syracuse and James and Faith Gray of Elmira; one daughter and her husband, Ruth and Richard Board of Moravia; six grandchildren, Erik Gray of Lansing, Kristina Gray of Idaho, Jessica Maurer of Kentucky, Susan Meier of New Jersey, Elizabeth and Amy Board, both of Moravia.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family Dec. 13, 1997 in Philadelphia, Pa. There will be no calling hours.

Freinds wishing may make memorial contributions to the Salvation Army.

Arrangements are with the Wade Funeral Home, Moravia, and the Lambie Funeral Home, Philadelphia, Pa.

Mary Pearson Griggs
ONEONTA — Mary Alice Pearson Griggs, 95, of Oneonta, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 9, 1997 at the Oneonta Nursing Home.

Mrs. Griggs was born Sept. 29, 1902 in the town of Oneonta to Charles D. Dye and Mary Ann White. Mary married Carl D. Pearson on Oct. 28, 1922 in Oneonta. They were married for 36 years until his death on Feb. 3, 1959. She remarried on March 29, 1975 to James E. Griggs and remained married to him until his death on Nov. 8, 1979.

Mary Alice lived in the Dye Homestead on Franklin Mountain, where she was born, for 88 years. Mary Alice took tolls at the tollgate, which was next door to her house as a teen-ager. She attended a one-room schoolhouse which was located on the back road to Otego.

She was a 75-year member of the Grange and worked for the Johnson Logan Dress Company at 213 Chestnut St. for 20 years, retiring at the age of 68. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, taking care of her grandchildren and cooking holiday meals for the family until she was in her 70s. Spaghetti and meatballs was her specialty for her family and college girls.

She has been a resident at the Oneonta Nursing Home since June of 1992.

Mary Alice was predeceased by a son, Arthur Pearson, and four sisters, Grace Munson, Edith Bird Skelly, Martha Dye and Guilee Alma Dye.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Ivan Hugh and Anna Eleanor Pearson; two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Jean and Gerald A. Baker and Rosalie Ann and Winfield James, all of Oneonta; 12 grandchildren, Sherry A. Earl, Ivan S.C. Pearson, William Pearson, Diana Paton, Gary Baker, Douglas Baker, G. Barry Baker, Lynn Baker, Wendy Lou Morgan, Meri K. Chase, David James and Eric James; 23 great-grandchildren, seven great-great- grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Funeral and committal services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 12 at the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta, 66 Chestnut St. The Rev. William D. Bouton, pastor of the church, will officiate. Mrs. Griggs will be placed in the Bookhout Funeral Home private vault to await burial in the spring at Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, Thursday from 7-9 p.m.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Lung Association or the Ronald McDonald House of Albany, 139 South Lake Ave., Albany, N.Y. 12208.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

John J. Johnson
HOBART — John J. Johnson, 80, passed away Dec. 8, 1997 in Bloomville.

He was born Sept. 20, 1917 in South Kortright, the son of John T. and Maude McClean Johnson. He married the late Hazel (Thomkins) Johnson on Oct. 19, 1942 in Davenport.

Mr. Johnson in the Canine Corps of the United States Army from 1946-1948. He was a manager for the former GLF Company and continued with Agway in Pennsylvania and retired from the Stamford store after 30 years with the company.

He was a 50-plus-year member of the Col. Harper Grange, Harpersfield, co-chairman of beef barbecue for many years; a member of the Hobart United Methodist Church; Stamford Presbyterian Church; board of directors of Stamford Hospital; caretaker of Riverside Cemetery, Bloomville; and for 35 years, he worked with Brooks' Bar-B-Q's, Oneonta.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Marc Haynes of Bloomville; a granddaughter, Wendi Haynes of New Hartford; a grandson, Jeffrey Haynes of Bloomville and a sister, Mirriam Johnson of Stamford.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997 at the Hobart United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Elder, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in the Stamford Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Friday, Dec. 12, 1997. The family will be in attendance from 7-9 p.m..

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Dialysis Unit at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, N.Y.

Arrangements are by MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Lillian K. Jackson
SIDNEY — Lillian K. Jackson, 89, of 8 Chestnut St., Sidney, passed away peacefully at her residence on Monday, Dec. 8, 1997.

She was born Feb. 18, 1908 in Carthage. Lillian was the daughter of the late Charles and Anna Florence Charles Knapp. On April 12, 1924, she married Burr M. Jackson in Walton. He predeceased her on June 17, 1984.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Gertrude "Bonnie" Thorson of Sidney; four grandchildren, Jack and Gary Dean, Jay Johnson and Sandra Tryee; several great- and great-great-granchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Jackson was predeceased by her daughter, Marion Johnson, two brothers and five sisters.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, 1997 from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. The Rev. Donald A. Roberts Sr., pastor of the Sidney United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the spring in the Prospect Cemetery, Sidney.

Friends are invited to call at the funeral chapel on Wednesday after 1 p.m. The family will be in attendance from 6-8 p.m.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Marion G. Burch
SOUTH NEW BERLIN — Marion G. "Rachel" Burch, 87, of South New Berlin, died Dec. 8, 1997 in Norwich.

She was born May 6, 1910 in Waterville, the daughter of Arthur and Alice (Keech) Smith. She married Ralph Burch. He predeceased her in 1954.

Mrs. Burch's childhood was spent in New Berlin and she was employed at the Bendix Corp. in Sidney for 20 years. She also worked at Victory Markets in New Berlin and attended the First Baptist Church of South New Berlin.

Survivors include one son, Gerald Burch of South New Berlin; one grandson, Chris Burch of Rome; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Pauline Smith of New Berlin; one sister, Pauline Roberts of Binghamton; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, 1997 at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin with the Rev. Rich Landers, pastor of the First Baptist Church of South New Berlin, officiating.

Interment will be in Maple Wood Cemetery, Mount Upton.

Viewing will be Thursday, Dec. 11, 1997 from noon-2 p.m., preceding the funeral at the Dakin Funeral Home.

Memorial donations may be made to the South New Berlin Emergency Squad.

Joseph H. Dent
WEST DAVENPORT — Joseph H. Dent, 81, of Route 23, West Davenport and Zephyrhills, Fla., died Monday, Dec. 8, 1997 at the East Pasco Medical Center in Zephyrhills, Fla.

He was born Jan. 25, 1916 in Stamford, the son of Grant M. and Harriet (Buck) Dent. He married Myrtle Barber on April 9, 1938.

Joe graduated from Stamford Seminary and Delhi Ag and Tech with a degree in Animal Husbandry. He started his farming career with his father and in 1946 purchased and operated the Davenport Hardware Store for 10 years. He later, with the help of his wife and children, owned and operated a large Guernsey dairy farm until he retired in 1978. Joe invested in and developed real estate for many years and formed a real estate partnership with John and Marge Davis.

He was a member of the West Davenport Free Baptist Church and currently a trustee of the church. He was a former supervisor and assessor for the town of Davenport. He was a member and 4-H leader for many years and active in the New York State Guernsey Association and the New York State Artificial Breeders Association. He was a longtime committeeman for the Agway Corp. Joe and his wife have enjoyed a winter home in Florida for nearly 20 years with active participation in swimming, golf and many other activities.

Joe is survived by his wife, Myrtle Dent of West Davenport and Zephyrhills, Fla.; eight children and their spouses, Harriet and Ronald Shipman of Stamford, Mina Austin and Harold Squire of Oneonta, Irwin and Jacqueline Dent of Oneonta, Charles and Margaret Dent of Oneonta, John and Helen Dent of Candor, Ruth and Ira Fyfe of Jefferson, Janet and Francis Ouimet of Oneonta and Virginia and Thomas Donnelly of Walton; 20 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Emma and Steven Vamosy of Stamford; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a special golfing friend, Robert Seamans of Zephyrhills, Fla. He was predeceased by a sister, Helen Mallory; a brother, Irwin Dent; and a great-granddaughter, Casey Young.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997 at the West Davenport Free Baptist Church with the Rev. Henry Geerken, pastor, officiating. The burial will be in the West Davenport Cemetery in the spring. Private calling hours will be held at the convenience of the family at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 W. Main St., Stamford.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Joe's memory to the West Davenport Free Baptist Church, c/o John House, RD2 Box 412A, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Alexander E. Graham
COOPERSTOWN — Mr. Alexander E. Graham of Cooperstown passed away at Bassett Hospital on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997.

Mr. Graham was born Jan. 1, 1913 in Westville, the son of William and Frances (Grant) Graham. He attended school in Westville.

Mr. Graham served in the United States Navy and was stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. He married Josephine Wilber April 30, 1950 at the Cooperstown Baptist Church with the Rev. Theodore Conklin officiating.

Mr. Graham retired after 25 years working for the Otsego County Highway Department. He then served as sexton of the United Methodist Church of Cooperstown for several years.

Mr. Graham is survived by his wife of 47 years, Josephine; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Diana Graham of Cooperstown; a daughter, Brenda Graham of Milford; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Claude and Enid Graham of Cherry Valley, Frank and Carol Graham of Little Falls; a granddaughter Janeve of Milford; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Graham was predeceased by a brother, John Graham.

Funeral services for Mr. Graham will be held Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997 at 11 a.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown with the Rev. Jeffery Hale of the United Methodist Church of Cooperstown officiating.

Friends and family may call at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown from 5-9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, 1997, when the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may send donations in memory of Alexander Graham to the Louis Hager Busch Cancer Clinic at Bassett Hospital or to the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 322, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
