Ruth L. Herdeker
ROCKDALE — Ruth L. Herdeker, 93, of Rockdale, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday morning, Dec. 9, 1997 at The Hospital in Sidney.

She was born April 25, 1904 in the town of Butternuts. Ruth was the daughter of the late Sylvester and Frankie Silvernail Lord. On June 28, 1922 she married Albert G. Herdeker in Sidney. He predeceased her on Oct. 8, 1954.

Ruth was a graduate of the Sidney High School class of 1922 and was a lifelong area resident.

Mrs. Hederker was a longtime member of the Rockdale Community Church of Rockdale.

She is survived by a daughter, Rose H. Peck of Rockdale; a son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Lillian Herdeker of Afton; a sister, Lola Evelyn Walton of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a half-brother and sister-in-law, Sylvester and Ruth Lord of Unadilla; a half-sister, Mrs. Anita DeVost of Unadilla; five grandchildren, Jennifer O'Malley of Mount Upton, Marshall Dart of Denver, N.C., Alberta Jeffery of Grand Rapids, Mich., Albert Herdeker of Denver, Colo., and Matthew Herdeker of Gainesville, Fla.; also several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday evening, Dec. 11, 1997 from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. The Rev. Donald A. Roberts Sr., pastor of the United Methodist Church of Sidney, will officiate. Burial will be held in the spring in the Maplewood Cemetery, Mount Upton.

Friends are invited after 3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral chapel. The family will be in from 6 p.m. until services at 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Mount Upton, Guilford or Sidney Emergency Squads, if so desired.

Edna Y. Babcock
BURLINGTON FLATS — Edna Y. Babcock, 75, of RD 1, died on Tuesday evening, Dec. 9, 1997 in her home after a long illness.

She was born May 1, 1922 in Gloversville, the daughter of the late William P. and Adeline Cassona Young.

She was raised and educated in Gloversville and went on to graduate from Oneonta State Teachers College in 1945. On July 28, 1945 she married Gerald Warren Babcock in Gloversville, a loving union for 48 years until his passing on Jan. 14, 1994.

A resident of Burlington Flats since 1945, she taught second grade in Bridgewater and Edmeston schools for five years. For 30 years she did substitute teaching for many of our local schools, retiring in 1990.

She was a member of the Exeter United Methodist Church, where she had taught Sunday School.

Surviving are two sons, Alan W. Babcock of Burlington Flats, Gary L. Babcock, DVM, and his wife Joan M. of Sacketts Harbor; a brother, William E. Young of Gloversville; a sister, Mary B. Wood of Troy; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; three nieces and a nephew.

She was predeceased by a sister, Dorthea Brooks.

Funeral services will be on Saturday at 11 a.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 5 W. James St., Richfield Springs, with the Rev. David Buchanan officiating. Mrs. Babcock will be placed in the J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home private vault to await burial in Exeter Center Cemetery next spring. Calling hours will be Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice; envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

John J. Johnson
HOBART — John J. Johnson, 80, passed away Dec. 8, 1997 in Bloomville.

He was born Sept. 20, 1917 in South Kortright, the son of John T. and Maude McClean Johnson. He married the late Hazel (Thompkins) Johnson on Oct. 19, 1942 in Davenport.

Mr. Johnson was in the Canine Corps of the United States Army from 1946-1948. He was a manager for the former GLF Company and continued with Agway in Pennsylvania and retired from the Stamford store after 30 years with the company.

He was a 50-plus-year member of the Col. Harper Grange, Harpersfield, co-chairman of beef barbecue for many years; a member of the Hobart United Methodist Church; Stamford Presbyterian Church; board of directors of Stamford Hospital; caretaker of Riverside Cemetery, Bloomville; and for 35 years, he worked with Brooks' Bar-B-Q's, Oneonta.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Marc Haynes of Bloomville; a granddaughter, Wendi Haynes of New Hartford; a grandson, Jeffrey Haynes of Bloomville; and a sister, Mirriam Johnson of Stamford.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997 at the Hobart United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Elder, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in the Stamford Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Friday, Dec. 12, 1997. The family will be in attendance from 7-9 p.m..

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Dialysis Unit at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, N.Y.

Arrangements are by MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Pauline F. Hovemeyer
DELHI — Pauline F. Hovemeyer, 98, a former well-known Delhi resident, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 1997 at the Westwood Healthcare Center in Keene, N.H.
She was born Oct. 4, 1899 in Otego, the daughter of Vincent S. and Esther (Thayer) Fuller.

She received her teacher's training at the Oneonta Normal School and later taught in Otego Rural Schools and then in Amsterdam. She married Henry L. Hovemeyer on July 25, 1931 in Blairstown, N.J. where they were engaged in newspaper publishing with her brother.

In 1948 the couple moved to Delhi where Mr. Hovemeyer was publishing editor of The Republican-Express. In addition to substitute teaching at Deleware Academy, Pauline served with her husband at the newspaper as a journalist and will be remembered for her numerous, informative and cogent articles, many of which were later published in book form "100 Years Of Delhi." Mr. Hovemeyer died on June 23, 1971 but Pauline continued to write for their successor at the newspaper, and after her retirement was the subject of the feature article of The Daily Star.

Pauline gave up her home in Delhi five years ago when her health declined.

She was a longtime active member of the United Ministry of Delhi; Watauga Chapter Order of the Eastern Star; served on the Delhi Village Planning Board; the Cannon Free Library Board of Directors; and was an avid contract bridge player.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Henry and Lois Hovemeyer of Raymond, N.H.; two grandchildren, Adrienne Bridges and David Hovemeyer and one great-granddaughter, Hannah Bridges; a brother, C. Raymond Fuller of Sun City, Fla.; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services (to be announced later next spring) will be held at the United Ministry of Delhi with burial then following in the Woodland Cemetery under the direction of Hall & Peet Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the United Ministry of Delhi.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Ransom A. Evans
RICHMONDVILLE — Ransom A. Evans, 64, of Robert Street in Richmondville, died Dec. 10, 1997 at his home.
RANSOM EVANS

He was born in Westford on Nov. 29, 1933, the son of Eddie and Flora Frayer Evans and married Mary Ellen Kissel in Mexico in 1969. He had been a resident of Richmondville since 1963, coming from Worcester and following service in the U.S. Navy as a Supply Corps Officer.

Mr. Evans was a graduate of Worcester Central School and New York State Teachers College in Albany, graduating with a Master of Science degree. He also did post-graduate work at SUNY Albany and RIT. He retired in 1989, after teaching for 26 years in the business administration department of SUNY Cobleskill.

Mr. Evans held many offices in local, district and state Elk Associations and community and veteran's organizations. Presently he was chairman of government relations New York State Elks Association and president of the Conference of Private Organizations of New York State.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen Evans of Richmondville; his mother, Flora Frayer Evans of Worcester; two brothers, Donald A. and Robert W. Evans, both of Worcester; an aunt, Rose M. Oakley of Worcester; an uncle, Burdette A. Evans of Oneonta; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be Sunday, Dec. 14 from 1-3 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Cobleskill Lodge No. 2040, B.P.O.E., Legion Drive, Cobleskill. The American Legion Service will be at 2:30 p.m., Elk Service at 7:30 p.m. and a religious service at 8 p.m. with the Rev. Carol Coltrain officiating.

Interment will be in the spring at Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester.

Memorial contributions to The Hope Lodge, 7 Oak St. Worcester, Mass., The Schoharie County Animal Shelter, Howes Cave, N.Y. 12092 or to The Catskill Area Hospice, P.O. Box 39, Cobleskill, N.Y. 12043, would be appreciated.

Arrangements are under the direction of Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home, Cobleskill.

Clemence P. Quick
WELLS BRIDGE — Clemence P. Quick, 92, of Wells Bridge, died Monday, Dec. 8, 1997 at her residence.
CLEMENCE QUICK

She was born June 26, 1905 in the town of Tompkins, the daughter of Maynard and Sara (McLaughlin) Finch.

She was first married to Ray K. Lowery in 1931. Mr. Lowery died in 1953. In 1964 she was married to Ralph Quick, who died in 1972.

Mrs. Quick has been a resident of Wells Bridge since 1968 and was a former sales clerk for the former Burt's Department Store in Endicott.

She was a member of the Wells Bridge Baptist Church, Wells Bridge Senior Citizens and the Wells Bridge Fireman's Auxiliary.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Marion Finch of Sidney Center; a niece and several nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Elwood Finch.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, 1997 at the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla, with the Rev. Robert Wesley and the Rev. David Steensma officiating.

Burial will be later in Highland Cemetery, Sidney Center.

Friends may call at the funeral home, Monday evening, Dec. 15 from 7-9 p.m., when the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wells Bridge Baptist Church or the Wells Bridge Fireman's Auxiliary.

Hernan Rodriguez Sr.
SCHENEVUS — Hernan (Herman) Rodriguez Sr., 66, of Schenevus, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 1997 at his residence.

He was born July 11, 1931 in Lares, Puerto Rico, the son of Juan E. and Jenerosa (Reyes) Rodriguez. He married Barbara Fredericks on July 7, 1956 in Central Islip.

Herman and his family moved to Schenevus in 1972 from Central Islip, Long Island. He retired in 1978 due to ill health. Prior to his retirement, he was a meat cutter for Loblaws grocery store on Long Island. Herman was also a member of the National Rifle Association.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Barbara Rodriguez of Schenevus; his children and their spouses, Debra and George Ost of Schenevus, Hernan and Tempie Rodriguez Jr. of Schenevus, Bruce and Denise Frederick of New Bern, N.C. and Jessie Thorsland of Maryland; four grandchildren, Mikaela and Denielle Ost, Hernan Rodriguez III and Curtis Alexander Rodriguez, all of Schenevus; a brother, Juan Rodriguez Jr. of San Juan, Puerto Rico; a sister and brother-in-law, Nilda and Paco Soto of Lares, Puerto Rico. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997 at 3 p.m. at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Judy Humphrey-Fox, pastor of Davenport United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be in the spring in Davenport Cemetery, Davenport.

Friends may call Saturday from 1 p.m. until service time at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Lucille B. Baryk
EAST WORCESTER — Lucille B. Baryk, 76, of East Worcester, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 1997 at her home.

She was born July 7, 1921 in Chillicothe, Ohio, the daughter of Jered Elsworth and Sara Ann (Gatton) Bobo. She married John N. Baryk on Nov. 15, 1939 in Brooklyn. He predeceased her May 22, 1985.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Baryk of East Worcester; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Pamela Baryk of Worcester and Mike and Bonnie Baryk of Decatur; a grandson, John of East Worcester; granddaughters, Cassandra, Megan, Mindy, Becky and Krystal; a sister, Vasa Powell of Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

A private burial service will be held at the convenience of the family, with the Rev. Paul R. Messner, pastor of the Zion Lutheran Church in Seward and St. John's Lutheran Church in Sharon Springs, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in loving memory of Lucille Baryk to the Catskill Area Hospice Inc. 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, 115 Main St., Worcester.

William Quackenbush
MILFORD — William Quackenbush, 79, of Milford, died Dec. 11, 1997 at A.O. Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.
He was born Aug. 28, 1918 in Davenport, the son of Adelbert and Ethel (Reed) Quackenbush. He married Grace Dauley on Oct. 13, 1939 in Davenport.

Mr. Quackenbush was a self-employed welder and carpenter for many years in Cairo and lived in Milford for the past 15 years.

Surviving are his wife, Grace at home in Milford; his children, Lillian Holbrook of Cairo, Ellamae Towmey of Norwich, Robert Quackenbush of Freehold, Emajean Eicklier of Norwich, Adelbert Quackenbush of South Cairo, Donald Quackenbush of Oneonta, Lynn Quackenbush of Milford, Virginia Everleth of Earlton, Bonnie Vandenburgh of Freehold and Mary Jo Hyams of Pleasantville; 25 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Paul Quackenbush, and a daughter, Wylene Quackenbush.

There will be a graveside service in the spring at the Davenport Cemetery, Davenport.

Arrangements are by MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart and Davenport.

Margaret C. Evans
ONEONTA — Mrs. Margaret "Peggy" C. Evans, 71, of Oneonta, went to be with our Lord on Friday morning, Dec. 12, 1997 at her residence.

Peggy was born Feb. 7, 1926 in Lynbrook, Long Island, the daughter of Paul and Ann (Logeman) Venth. She was a homemaker in her own home.

She is survived by her husband, Jim Evans of Oneonta; a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Sabine Starr of Maplecrest; two daughters, Jane Evans and her companion, Floyd Moseman of Franklin, Dawn Briggs and son-in-law Les Briggs of Davenport; five brothers, Bill Venth of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., Ronald Venth of East Meredith, Larry Venth of Davenport, Bob Venth of Walton and George Venth of Medford of Long Island; two sisters, Jean Zagata of West Davenport and Joan Weil of Orlando, Fla.; six grandchildren, Julius Starr, Cassandra Starr, Dania Lee LaChance, Adrian Beres, Rosa Ann Moseman, and a stepgrandson, James Moseman; also several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a brother, Everett Venth and a sister, Dorothy Shepard.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15, 1997 from the Wesleyan Church, Southside, Oneonta with the Rev. Royal Mattoon, pastor of the Wesleyan Church, Oneonta, officiating.

Mrs. Evans will be placed in the Bookhout Funeral Home private vault to await spring burial in the East Meredith Cemetery, East Meredith.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, from 7-9 p.m. Sunday evening, Dec. 14, 1997, when the family will be present.

Expressions of sympathy may be given to the Wesleyan Church, Route 23, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in memory of Margaret "Peggy" Evans.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.
