Arthur E. Shaul
WESTVILLE — Mr. Arthur E. Shaul, 81, of Westville, passed away at Bassett Hospital on Thursday, Dec. 18, 1997. Mr. Shaul was born in Mohawk on Dec. 24, 1915, the son of Alba and Lenora (Weaver) Shaul.

After attending schools in Mohawk, Mr. Shaul entered the Army. He did his basic training at Fort Knox, Ky. and Fort Meade, Md., then went to England to enter France at Omaha Beach with the 1st Army 32 Armored Regiment in line maintainance and gunnery repair under the command of Gen. Courtney Hodges 1st Army. When the war ended he went to Nice, France in hotel management under Captain Fink and then back to the U.S. for discharge at Fort Dix.

He then began farming in the local area for many years and settled in Westville in 1971 when he married Ella (Allen) Shaul on July 18, 1971. Mr. Shaul was very proud of his vegetable garden.

Mr. Shaul is survived by his wife of 26 years, Ella; a son, Arthur Peterson of Schuyler Lake; two stepsons, Gary Nichols of Cooperstown and Herman Peterson of Richmondville; two stepdaughters, Alice Talbot of Laurens and Phylis Smith of Westville; two stepsisters, Betty Armstrong of Toddsville and Gertrude Richardson of Herkimer; several cousins, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sons, Albert Peterson and Bruce Shaul.

A funeral service will be at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Linda Bryan of the United Methodist Church of Westville officiating.

Calling hours for Mr. Shaul will be Friday, Dec. 19, 1997 from 4-7 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, when the family will be in attendance. He will be placed in the Tillapaugh Funeral Home receiving vault for later burial in the spring at Westville Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish, may send contributions to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta in his memory.

Funeral services are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Donald L. Bancroft
FLY CREEK — Donald L. Bancroft, 80, of Fly Creek, passed away at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital on Dec. 18, 1997 after a long illness. Mr. Bancroft was born in Guilford on Sept. 11, 1917, the son of Harvey T. and Ethel M. (Firman) Bancroft.

Mr. Bancroft attended Taylor Town School and Cooperstown High School, after which he became a cattle dealer and farmer. He married Beulah Galusha on April 7, 1942 in Schuyler Lake.

Mr. Bancroft served in World War II with the Air Force, 769th Bomb Squadron in the Western Pacific, Eastern Mandates and Central Pacific.

He was a constable and tax assessor for the town of Exeter for many years.

Mr. Bancroft is survived by his wife of 55 years, Beulah; a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Peter Weytowich of Richfield Springs; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Diane Bancroft of Burlington Flats; a sister and brother-in-law, June Hotaling Barlow and Michael Barlow of Cooperstown; a half-brother and sister-in-law, R. Burton and Rhoda Bancroft of Ormond Beach, Fla.; seven grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Richard, in 1974, a half-sister and two half-brothers.

A funeral service will be at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Saturday, Dec. 20 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Eileen Kellogg of United Methodist Church of Fly Creek officiating.

Calling hours for Mr. Bancroft will be Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997 from 1-2 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown when the family will be in attendance. He will be placed in the Tillapaugh Funeral Home receiving vault for later burial in the spring at Schuyler Lake Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may send contributions to charities of their choice in memory of Donald L. Bancroft.

Funeral services are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Victoria R. Climek
LITTLE FALLS — Victoria R. Climek, 82, of 55 Ward St., Little Falls, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 1997 in Little Falls Hospital following a brief illness.

She was born Nov. 14, 1915 in Oaksville, the daughter of the late Martin and Anna (Bohsnis) Redjives. She was educated in St. Mary's Academy and was a member of the Holy Family Parish. Victoria was a lifelong resident of the Little Falls area and had spent her summers in the Cooperstown area.

She was united in marriage to Steven Climek on July 27, 1940 in St. Mary's Church, Little Falls, with the Rev. Moore officiating. The couple shared in a blessed union of 36 years until the death of Mr. Climek on Sept. 6, 1976.

Victoria was last employed by the former Remington Rand in Ilion, where she had worked for several years.

Surviving are one sister, Katherine Gouse of Honeoye Falls; several nieces and nephews, including Victoria Reinhardt of Rome, Mary Wittmann of Rome and Ruth Redjives of Richfield Springs; great nieces and great nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Anthony Redjives and Casimer Redjives, four sisters, Margaret Caulkins, Agnes Weller, Anne Taylor and Mary Gorback.

The funeral will commence on Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997 at 8:30 a.m. from the Enea Funeral Home, 24 W. Monroe St., Little Falls and at 9 a.m. from the Holy Family Parish Chapel (corner of William and Albany streets), Little Falls. Interment will take place in Fort Plain Cemetery, Fort Plain, in the spring. Friends and relatives may call at the Enea Funeral Home on Friday, Dec. 19, 1997 from 2-4 p.m. only.

It is the wish of the family that memorial contributions in memory of Victoria be considered to the Holy Family Parish. Envelopes will be available at the Enea Funeral Home.

Elton LaRue
SUMMERFIELD, Fla. — Elton LaRue, 86, of 15051 SE 103rd Terrace, Summerfield, Fla., passed away Dec. 17, 1997 at the Mariners Health Center in Inverness, Fla.

He was born Nov. 15, 1911 in Stamford, a son of the late Alonzo and Mary Bunn-LaRue. On Sept. 25, 1934, he married Hazel Gerowe.

He was an auto mechanic and radio and TV technician, having owned and operated the Esso Station and TV Sales and Service in Roxbury. He was an active fireman for 35 years, 29 years as chief.

In 1974 he retired and in 1975, moved to Florida.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Bonnie Becker of Perry, Fla. and Wanda Klinger of West Hurley; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are at the Forest Lawn Funeral Home in Ocala, Fla.

Jacqueline Hait Davis
HOBART — Jacqueline Hait Davis, 45, of Hobart died Dec. 18, 1997 at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi. She was born Aug. 16, 1952, the daughter of Katherine (McKee) Hait and the late Donald D. Hait of Hobart.

She graduated from South Kortright Central School in 1970 and from Berkley Business School at White Plains in 1971.

She previously was married to Ronald W. Davis of Hobart. Jackie was employed at the National Bank and Trust Company of Norwich at the Hobart Office for 23 years. She was currently working with her fiance, Thomas Vasta, at Vasta's Italian Deli and Pizzeria.

Her mother, Katherine Hait of Hobart, survives her, as do two sisters and brothers-in-law, Willie and John Palmer of Conesville and Janice and Larry Frazee of Hobart; four nieces and a nephew, Angie Frazee of Stamford, Shawn and Sandy Palmer of Conesville, Shelly Palmer and daughter Taylor of Grand Gorge; several aunts, uncles, cousins; and her fiance, Thomas Vasta Sr. of Stamford, and his children Dawn Marie Dubois, Thomas Jr., Frederick, Christina and Gabriella.

Funeral services will take place on Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997 at the Hobart United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Richard Elder, pastor of the church, and the Rev. Stephen Herring of Stamford Presbyterian Church officiating. Calling hours will take place Dec. 19 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Evelyn F. Lewis
DELHI — Evelyn F. Lewis, 82, of "Leisure Village," Meredith Road, Delhi died Thursday afternoon, Dec. 18, 1997 at Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She ws born March 9, 1915 in Worcester, the daughter of James H. and Helen E. (Lane) Kilmer.

Evelyn received her education at Delaware Academy and later married Leon M. Lewis on July 20, 1940 in Binghamton. He died March 18, 1973.

A 70-year Delhi resident, in earlier years, Evelyn was a waitress at Farmlette's Restaurant and the Delaware Lunch and later worked as a sales clerk at Arbuckle's Department Store. Subsequently, she cared for the elderly in their homes for 15 years until her health declined.

Surviving are one brother, Raymond M. Kilmer of Lima, Ohio; a nephew, several nieces and cousins.

She was predeceased by a sister, Ruth, and a brother, Edward Kilmer.

Friends are invited to call at their convenience at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Saturday, Dec. 20 by the Rev. Bert More, and burial will be later in the Kilmer family plot at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Memorial contributions may be made to the D.W. Gleason American Legion Auxiliary or the Delhi Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Linda L. O'Driscoll
PINELLAS PARK, Fla. — Linda L. O'Driscoll, 51, native and former resident of Oneonta, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 1997 in Pinellas Park, Fla. She worked as an office manager for the automobile industry and was a member of the National Skeet Shoot Association.

She is survived by her husband of 23 years, Jerry; her mother, Genevieve Bresee of Clearwater, Fla.; a brother, William Bresee of Clearwater, Fla., and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Florida Suncoast, 300 E. Bay Dr., Largo, Fla. 33770.

Mabel Wagner Atwell
COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Mabel Wagner Atwell, 86, of Cooperstown, died early Saturday morning, Dec. 20, 1997 at the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home in Cooperstown.

She was born on March 22, 1911 in Phoenixville, Pa. She married Robert Murdock Atwell on Aug. 6. 1938 in Phoenixville, Pa. Mr. Atwell died on July 17, 1991.

A lifelong school teacher, Mrs. Atwell attended Syracuse University and graduated from the School of Speech and English at the University in 1934. She went on to teach from 1934 to 1972 at the Cooperstown High School, where she was also head of the English Department. She was particularly proud of the drama award given in her name each year at the Cooperstown Central School to the senior who makes the greatest contribution to the school in the area of stage performance.

Mrs. Atwell was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Cooperstown and was active on the church flower committee. She was also a member emeritus of the New York State Speech and Communication Association and the Auxiliary at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Neal and Joseph E. Franklin Jr. of Evansville, Ind.; four grandchildren, Joseph E. Franklin III, Pamel A. Grizzel, Katheryn N. Redman and Ellen W. Franklin; one great granddaughter, Sarah K. Redman; and one cousin, Andrew Harris of Wayne, Penn. She was predeceased by one son, Robert W. Atwell, who was killed in Vietnam in 1968.

Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday, Dec. 23, 1997 at Christ Episcopal Church in Cooperstown with the Rev. Douglas C. Smith, rector, officiating. Interment will be at a later date in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.

At the request of the family there will be no calling hours.

Expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Joseph C. Broe
ONEONTA — Joseph C. Broe, 81, of Hemlock Road, Oneonta died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997 at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

He was born in East Orange, N.J. on Aug. 31, 1916, the son of Christopher and Rose (Mangan) Broe. He married Lorraine Hurley on Nov. 16, 1946 in Yonkers.

Joe moved to this area at the age of 5 and for the past 60 years, he was a local cattle dealer.

He was a member of St. Mary's Church. For the past 20 years, he and his wife spent the winter months in Ft. Myers Beach, Fla. Joe took great pleasure in attending the Broe family reunion that was held every summer.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Lorraine Broe of Oneonta; a daughter, Judith A. Broe of Oneonta; his sisters, brothers and their spouses, Mary Otvos of Colliersville, Gertrude and Thomas Natoli of Oneonta, Elizabeth and James Priore of Rochester Hills, Mich., Gerald and Ruth Broe of Oneonta, Thomas and Delores Broe of Atlanta, Ga., and James and Joyce Broe of Colliersville.

He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Maureen Broe, who cared for him during one of his illnesses.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 23 at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church with the Rev. Brian Raiche, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be later in the spring in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call this evening from 7-9 at which time the family will be in attendance.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Louise M. Duncan Kenyon
CHERRY VALLEY — Louise M. Duncan Kenyon, 57, of School House Gage Road, died Saturday evening, Dec. 20, 1997, with her loving family at her side.

A daughter of the late Edward and Sarah Van Buren Duncan, she was born on Feb. 27, 1940 in Schuyler Lake. On Sept. 21, 1954, she married Robert L. Kenyon in West Winfield. Coming from Boonville in 1967 to Roseboon, Louise and her family had previously resided in Rider Valley. She was a charter member of Papa's Antique Engine Club and enjoyed traveling to fairs and exhibits of Antique Engines.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 43 years, Robert; a son, Robert Kenyon of Boonville; five daughters, Josephine Larock of Vernon Center, Eloise Grimm and Virginia Rogers, both of Cherry Valley, Elizabeth Platt of Boonville, Marian Santoro of East Springfield; five brothers, Howard Duncan of Richfield Springs, Edward Duncan of Burlington Flats, Frank Duncan of Schuyler Lake, Ray Duncan of Monticello, Elwin Duncan of Hartwick; two sisters, Elizabeth Sparks of Herkimer, Isabelle Garbara of Richfield; 17 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was predeceased in death by three brothers, Herb, Sylvan and Fred Duncan, a grandson, Howard Robert Grim and an infant grandchild.

Calling hours will be from 10 a.m.-noon Tuesday in the J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 5 West James St., Richfield Springs. Funeral service will be at 12:30 p.m. with the Rev. John Young of the First Universalist Church of Schuyler Lake and the Rev. Alan Miller, pastor of the Christian Church of South Valley, officiating. Mrs. Kenyon will then be placed in the J. Seaton McGrath Private Vault to await burial next spring in the Schuyler Lake Cemetery with her grandchild, the infant Santoro baby.

Memorial donations may be made to the Northern Catskill Hospice, P.O. Box 39, Cobleskill, N.Y. 12043.

Irving Goldman
ONEONTA — Mr. Irving Goldman, 78, of Oneonta, died Sunday morning, Dec. 21, 1997 at his residence.

He is survived by his wife, Helen A. Goldman; three daughters; two stepsons; one brother; six grandchildren; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 23 at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

The family will be in attendance on today from 7-9 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, when those who wish may call.

Irving will be placed in the Bookhout Funeral Home Private Vault to await burial in the spring in the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

Dagny A. Grant
ONEONTA — Dagny A. Grant, 53, of Oneonta died Dec. 20, 1997 at her residence following a lengthy illness.

She was born Feb. 16, 1944 in Brooklyn the daughter of E. Malcohm and Dagny (Sandholm) Spohn. She married David L. Grant Oct. 27, 1972 in Guilford.

Mrs. Grant was a registered nurse, having graduated from the former Plattsburgh State College in 1965. She started her nursing career the following year at Yale University Hospital in New Haven, Conn. and later worked at both Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich and Fox Hospital in Oneonta, having most recently been a county health nurse with the Otsego County Department of Social Services.

She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Oneonta, where she was active in the vestry and various inter organizations of the church. She was also a member of the Martha Chapter O.E.S.

Survivors include her husband at home; one daughter, Jennifer J. Grant, a senior at Castleton College in Vermont; one son, Raymond C. Grant II, a freshman at Western N.E. College in Massachusetts; her father and mother-in-law, Raymond and Barbara Grant of North Norwich; an aunt and uncle, Wilma and Frank Doolittle of Bainbridge and two cousins, Ann Marble of Greene and Karl Ideman of Vernon.

A requiem mass will be celebrated at noon on Tuesday, Dec. 23 at St. James Episcopal Church in Oneonta with the Rev. Canon Mark R. Cole and the Rev. Robert Harvey officiating.

Friends may call at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, after 3 p.m. today. The family will be in attendance from 7-9 tonight.

Contributions may be made to either the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or The Youth Program at St. James Episcopal Church, 305 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.
