Carol A. Weich
ONEONTA — Carol A. Weich died at her home at 10 Blanchard Ave., Oneonta on Friday, Dec. 26, 1997, following a long illness.

Carol was born in Rockville Center on Oct. 27, 1934, the only child to Henry and Caroline (Curley) Weich, both of whom predeceased her.

Carol graduated from high school in Rockville and entered the convent. However, after taking her initial vows she withdrew to pursue a career in nursing. She graduated from Middletown State Hospital School of Nursing in Middletown and won a scholarship to Columbia University in New York City. There she earned a BS in Nursing Education, Cum Laude.

From that time on, Carol advanced rapidly in nursing and participated in various areas of nursing, including psychiatry, general medicine and surgery, intensive care and cardiology while in New York City.

In the '60s she moved back to Middletown to work initially as the director of in-service education and later assistant director of nursing at Horton Memorial Hospital.

From there she accepted positions of director of nursing at various hospitals. In 1973 at the age of 39 while director of nursing of an 800-bed medical center, Carol became disabled from a stroke.

However, her disability did not slow her down for long. She was soon continuing her strong desire to work with and educate nurses and other health care workers and the general public in health care and the need to know legalities and rights regarding such care. She taught classes for nurses in continuing education programs at Delhi Tech, SUNY Oneonta and the surrounding hospitals and nursing homes. She also taught classes to the general public as part of her participation in church programs.

Carol had many hobbies and interests and for years kept active with them. They included collecting old radio tapes, comic books and comic book histories and teddy bears. She was also an avid reader and enjoyed mysteries, American history since 1900 and biographies. She was involved in hand crafts and knitted many sweaters and painted on fabrics — such as blocks for quilts, sweatshirts and tote bags.

In the early '70s Carol joined United Ministry Church in Delhi and had her membership transferred to Elm Park United Methodist Church when she moved to Oneonta.

Carol is survived by her longtime friend, Kim Dailey.

A service to celebrate the life of Carol Weich will be held Monday, Dec. 29 at 2 p.m. at the Elm Park United Methodist Church, 401 Chestnut St., Oneonta.
