Ionela S. Clancy

COOPERSTOWN — Ionela S. Clancy, 83, died Saturday, Nov. 5, 2005, in Hawaii.

She was born April 6, 1922, in Craiova, Romania, the daughter of Ion and Olga Stancutz.

After the completion of her college education in Romania and, because she was fluent in Romanian and French, she began working at the U.S. Military Consulate in Romania. While so employed, she met her future husband, Edward "Hawk" Clancy, who was at that time a civilian meteorologist assisting the U.S. military. Because Edward spoke no Romanian and Ionela spoke no English, they used French as their "common language" during their ensuing courtship. They were married in 1947 in Bucharest.

After their return to the United States, Ionela went back to school and completed the requisite courses for her to receive her teaching certificate; she was subsequently employed as a high school Latin, French and geography teacher in the Atlanta, Ga., area.

Although she was an active community member and was a member of numerous community organizations and committees, her first priority was always to be a supportive, loving and caring mother to their only child, Patricia.

Ionela was predeceased by her husband, Edward "Hawk" Clancy, in 1985; and by her brothers-in-law, Joseph M. Clancy of Cooperstown, Richard F. Clancy of Syracuse and Stephen Clancy of Newark, Del.; and by her sister-in-law, Libby Wheeler of Cooperstown.

She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Clancy of Kaneohe, Hawaii; her sister-in-law, Bertha Mae Clancy of Cooperstown; and her brother-in-law, John V. Wheeler, also of Cooperstown. She is also survived by seven nieces and nephews, Michael Clancy of Webster, Caroline Calhoun of Greene, Brian Clancy of Cooperstown, Terry Clancy of Weatherford, Texas, Martin Clancy of Danbury, Conn., Dennis Clancy of Milan, and Kathleen McDermott of Burr Ridge, Ill.; as well as by numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.

Because an Orthodox funeral service was previously held at Saints Constantine and Helen Orthodox Cathedral of the Pacific, the Orthodox Pannyhida service will be celebrated by a priest from the Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 14, 2005, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home, 28 Pioneer St., Cooperstown. A Committal Service and burial in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Cemetery in Index will follow the Pannyhida.

The family will be in attendance to receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13, 2005.

Local arrangements are under the supervision of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara A. Schilling; two daughters, Beth A. Schilling and her fiance, Matt Dickson, of Perth, Ontario, Canada, and Amy Lozancic and her husband, Boris, of Castle Rock, Colo.; three grandchildren, Satinka, Kelly and Benjamin; two sisters, Violet Reich and her husband, Howard, of Lindenhurst, and Patricia Colucci of Kissimmee, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Private family services will be held at a later date in Cooperstown.

Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Armin Klemt

WESTFORD — Armin Klemt, 96, of Westford died Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2005, at the Otsego Manor.

Armin was born Oct. 17, 1909, and raised in Germany. He served in the German military during World War II.

Although Armin was married as a young man, the last time he saw his wife was when he left for the armed service. He was unable to locate his wife after the war and he believed she died during the war. Armin never remarried and never had any children.

Following the war, Armin immigrated to the United States, became a U.S. citizen, and resided for many years on Long Island, where he worked as a carpenter and general contractor.

Approximately 30 years ago, Armin moved to upstate New York and later purchased a home and settled in Westford. He resided in Westford until he entered The Meadows in 2004.

Armin is survived by several nieces and nephews in Germany and Poland.

Graveside services and burial will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21, 2005, in the Milford Cemetery, Milford, with the Rev. John Young of Schuyler Lake officiating.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that those who so desire make a donation to the charity of their choice in Armin’s name.

Arrangements are under the supervision of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
