William Bertrand (’Bert’) Fink II

LAURENS — William Bertrand ("Bert") Fink II, Ph.D., chairman for many years of the Social Science Education Department at the State University of New York at Oneonta and author of several books on New York state history, died early Saturday morning, Dec. 24, 2005, at the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born May 11, 1916, in Yonkers, the son of Perley C. and Agnes (Heuchele) Fink, and was given the name of his father’s uncle, William Bertrand II.

In 1933, he graduated from Yonkers High School and from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn., in 1937. While a student at Wesleyan, he was on the track and cross-country teams, a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and president of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity.

Upon receiving his master’s degree in history from Columbia University in 1939, he gained his first employment teaching social studies at Greer School, a church-related school for disadvantaged children located in Dutchess County. He later noted that the experience sold him on teaching, most particularly history.

On Aug. 16, 1941, he married his high school friend, Esther Cheney, in Yonkers.

While he was teaching in Dundalk, Md., Pearl Harbor was attacked, and in 1942, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He went on to serve aboard ships in the Pacific and, as a gunnery officer was in command of naval gun crews on troop transports. His ships left from San Francisco, and he followed the progress of the war in the Pacific from Australia, to New Guinea, the Philippines and Osaka, Japan. Bert was in Japan, soon after the atomic bomb was dropped and before the troops had moved in or the peace treaty was signed. He received his honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy on Dec. 12, 1945, holding the rank of lieutenant.

After the war, he was an instructor at SUNY Albany for three years and then earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree at Columbia University in 1950. He then served as supervisor of social studies for two years for the Plainfield, New Jersey, school system before coming to SUNY Oneonta in 1953. In 1960, he was appointed head of the social studies department.

In 1961, he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to teach at the University of the Philippines and the University of the East. His wife, Esther, and their two children joined him.

In 1978, Dr. and Mrs. Fink were employed for one term at Trent Polytech in Nottingham, England, and for another term doing research at Cambridge, England.

When the agreement was worked out between SUNY Oneonta and the New York State Historical Association to offer a graduate program in history and museum studies, then-SUNY Oneonta president Royal Netzer appointed Dr. Fink as the university’s representative. As such, Dr. Fink was integral in developing what has become over the past 25 years a very well-respected and renowned program.

Dr. Fink was co-author with Dave Ellis and James Frost of "New York: The Empire State," the textbook used for many years in junior high social studies classes throughout New York state. He also wrote two children’s books, "Getting to Know the Hudson River" and "Getting to Know New York State."

For one term he served as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Council for Social Studies, and, after his retirement in 1982, was presented with a Faculty Emeritus Award by the SUNY Oneonta Alumni Association in 1999.

A devoted Presbyterian throughout his life, Dr. Fink was a member of the Laurens Presbyterian Church and, in 1975, was ordained as an elder of that church. On May 21, 1989, he and his wife transferred their membership to the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, where he faithfully served throughout the 1990s as an elder on the church’s Session.

Dr. Fink is survived by his wife of 64 years, Esther, of Oneonta; one son, William B. Fink and his wife, Linda, of Laurens; one daughter, Marilyn (Lynn) Fink and her companion, John Soprano, of Hendersonville, N.C.; three grandchildren, Jennifer Catalano and her husband, Frank, of Clay, Wesley Fink of Wilton, and Rebecca Fink of Portland, Ore.; and three great-grandchildren, Carissa, Coral and Ross Catalano of Clay.

A service in celebration of Bert’s life will be announced and offered at a later date in the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown. The service of committal and burial will take place in the Laurens Village Cemetery.

In order that today’s youth may develop positive directions for their lives, Dr. Finks’ family requests that those who wish make expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts in memory of Dr. Fink to benefit youth programs at the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, 25 Church St., Cooperstown, NY 13326.
