Grace Close

ANDES — Grace Close, 77, of Andes passed away Saturday, Dec. 24, 2005, at the Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville.

Grace was born in Andes on Aug. 10, 1928, the daughter of Everett and Wilma (Muir) Close.

Grace attended the Andes Central School.

She lived in Andes until she had to be in a nursing home. Grace had spent the last 27 years as a resident of Countryside Care Center in Delhi and then resided at the Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville.

Grace is survived by her cousins, Margaret A. Barnes of Arkville, Angelo Sassani of Binghamton, Adelina Sassani of Binghamton and Emily Allmer of Florida, and other cousins.

Calling hours will be held from noon until time of service at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005, with the Rev. Jane Ann Groom officiating at the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

Burial will be in Andes Cemetery in Andes at a later date.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

The Rev. Carl R. Wayman

ONEONTA — The Rev. Carl R. Wayman, 86, of Oneonta died Friday, Dec. 23, 2005, at Fox Nursing Home.

He was born Nov. 2, 1919, in Burlington, the son of Harvey and Ida (Richards) Wayman.

On Nov. 21, 1938, he married Pauline Lewis in Milford. Mrs. Wayman predeceased him Dec. 1, 1999.

Carl graduated from Elohim Bible Institute in Castile. Carl pastored in many area churches including Faith Chapel, Bridgewater, Horicon Baptist Church, Brandt Lake, Meredith Baptist Church, Meredith Square and Flat Creek Baptist Church, Gilboa.

After his retirement from the ministry, he owned and operated Mountain Top Repair and Sharpening Shop, where he did small-engine repair and sharpening for 15 years.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Wayne R. and Carol Wayman of Flower Mound, Texas; his three grandchildren, Janice Wayman of Mansfield, Texas, Wayne R. Wayman II of Allen, Texas, and Caroline Hollenbeck of Little Elm, Texas; and his two great-grandchildren, Courtney Wayman and Dominic Hollenbeck; his sister, Wanda Blanchard of Oneida; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Keith VanDewerker, pastor of the West End Community Baptist Church, and the Rev. Paul Meisel of Delhi, officiating.

Burial will be held in the spring in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Calling hours will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the West End Community Baptist Church, 18 Winney Hill Road, Oneonta, NY 13820 in loving memory of the Rev. Carl R. Wayman.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Orlo G. Woodbridge

EDMESTON — Orlo G. Woodbridge of Edmeston died Friday, Dec. 23, 2005, at Chase Nursing Home in New Berlin.

He was born Sept. 1, 1920, in Edmeston, the son of E.J. Woodbridge and Florence (O’Brien).

He married Dorothy L. Higbie on June 4, 1943. She predeceased him Nov. 1, 1981.

Orlo graduated from Edmeston Central School, valedictorian, "class of 1938."

Until his retirement he owned and operated the Woodbridge Dairy Farm.

Orlo was a very active citizen: he was a member of the Second Baptist Church, a 65-year member and past president of the Wharton Valley Grange, Agway, Dairymen’s league, Eastern AI, Dairylea, past president Senior Citizens, Meals on Wheels, Chief Assessor for the Town of Edmeston, and past caretaker for Edmeston Union Cemetery.

His children, Janet Bates, Dennis Woodbridge, Phyllis Jackson and Sharon Scanlon; his grandchildren, Joel Bates, Heather Snyder, Paul Tuttle, Martin Mickle, Katie Mickle, Stephanie Scanlon, Samantha Scanlon and Zachary Scanlon; two great-grandchildren, Hayleigh Snyder and Lucas Mickle; four stepgrandchildren, James, Steven, Erek and Jacob; one great-stepgrandchild, James; and his brother, Norman Woodbridge, survive Orlo. His devoted friend of 25-years, Grace Clark, will also miss him.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005, at the Second Baptist Church, Edmeston, with the Rev. Jay Noll officiating.

Interment will be in the spring in Edmeston Union Cemetery.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Contributions may be made in Orlo’s memory to the Wharton Valley Grange or the Second Baptist Church.

Alexander Polulech

EAST SPRINGFIELD — Mr. Alexander Polulech, 97, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born Dec. 23, 1908, in the U.S.S.R. to John and Elizabeth Polulech.

He married Marion Walts in Herkimer on April 6, 1946. She predeceased him in 1988.

He was a dairy farmer at Al Mac Farm in Cooperstown until retiring in 1972.

Survivors include his son-in-law, Frederick Lee and his wife, Sylvia Lee; a granddaughter, Janet Button and her husband, Bruce; a grandson, Mark Lee; five great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was predeceased by a daughter, Carole Lee.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Alan Potter of Ames Baptist Church officiating.

Spring burial will take place in the Springfield Cemetery, Springfield Center.

There will be a calling hour from 1 p.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.

Contributions in Mr. Polulech’s memory may be made to the Springfield First Responders.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Zita B. Wenzel

TAVARES, Fla. — Zita B. Wenzel, 78, of Tavares, Fla., died Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005.

Born in Valier, Ill., she grew up in Worcester. She moved to Tavares in 1990 from Huntington Station, Long Island.

She was a children’s librarian at the Tavares Public Library, a writer and was valedictorian of her class from Worcester Central School in 1944 and was a member of the S.N.P.J.

She was the Bozanic family historian and was awarded a millennial certificate for Philanthropic Recognition from the Ellis Island Foundation.

She will be remembered for her stories of growing up on the family farm.

She is predeceased by her husband, Charles H. Wenzel, and brothers, Nick Bozanic and John Bozanic Jr.

Survived by son Charles John Wenzel of Tavares, Fla.; daughters Maria Teresa (Peter) Leslie of Gouverneur and Zita Marta Wenzel (Randy Bush) of Hawi, Hawaii; brothers Donald Bozanic of Hedgesville, W.Va., George Bozanic of Lumberton, Miss., and Larry Bozanic of China; sisters Helen Teller of Worcester, Anne Jorgenson of Zephyrhills, Fla., Vera Peters of Springfield, Va., Emily Lilly of Deerfield Beach, Fla., Jan Boxill of Chapel Hill, N.C., Mary Bozanic of Santa Monica, Calif.; and grandchildren Caroline, Daniel and Colby Leslie.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005, in Tavares Cemetery.

Charles John Wenzel

TAVARES, Fla. — Charles John Wenzel, 44, of Tavares, Fla., died Friday, Dec. 23, 2005.

Born in Huntington, he moved to Tavares in 1990 from Huntington Station, Long Island.

He was a freelance artist and writer and a graduate of Walt Whitman High School, Long Island, St. John’s University, and the University of Washington, receiving a Certificate from the Literary Fiction Writing Program.

He received second place in the Mount Dora Art Festival, Fiction Category for his story "The Propeller." His novel "Pax: The Millennium Alliance," was published by iUniverse.

He is survived by his sisters, Maria Teresa (Peter) Leslie of Gouverneur and Zita Marta Wenzel (Randy Bush) of Hawi, Hawaii; and many aunts and uncles.

Graveside services will be held at Tavares Cemetery at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005.

Marguerite A. Ruocco

GLOVERSVILLE — Mrs. Marguerite A. Ruocco, formerly of Gloversville, died peacefully in her sleep at her daughter’s home Saturday, Dec. 24, 2005.

Born June 1, 1914, in Gloversville, she was the daughter of the late Dominic and Lucille Briggin Anthony.

A Johnstown High School graduate in 1931, she also attended Simmons College in Boston, Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs and graduated from the former Methodist Episcopal Hospital School of Nursing in Brooklyn.

Mrs. Ruocco was employed as a registered nurse for many years at Nathan Littauer Hospital, the former Johnstown Hospital, and she also did private- duty nursing.

Always involved in family and community, Marguerite was a longtime member of PTA at Mc Nab School and Gloversville High School, serving as president at Mc Nab.

Her many years of dedication to the Fulton County Mental Health Association as a founding member, board member and recipient of the Ruth Voorhees Award were especially meaningful to Marguerite.

She was a member of the Hospital Alumni Association, sub-committee of community service, and executive board of St. Mary’s Hospital Mental Health Center.

Early in her life, she was also a member of the former St. Francis de Sales Church Women’s Society and Mt. Carmel Church.

She was united in marriage to Joseph W. Ruocco Sr. on Sept. 4, 1939, at St. Finbar’s Church in Brooklyn. He predeceased her Aug. 11, 1994.

Survivors include her children, Anthony Ruocco of Recife, Brazil, Joanne Clarke of Gilbertsville, Marguerite Webster and her husband, Royce, of Morris and Ann Michele Wasilewski and her husband, Kris, of Boston, Mass.; and two sisters, Elizabeth "Betty" Spinak of Gloversville and Susan B. Von Atzingen and her husband, Bill, of Greenville. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews, who will always remember her wonderful cooking and baked masterpieces.

Marguerite was predeceased by two sons, Robert Ruocco in 1955 and Joseph W. Ruocco Jr. in 2003.

A prayer service will be held at 9:15 a.m. Friday at the Kobuskie-Konik Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St., and at 10 a.m. a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church.

Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown, in the spring.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Gloversville Free Library or to the Gloversville Senior Citizens Center.

Hilda A. Snyder

CHERRY VALLEY — Mrs. Hilda A. Snyder, 90, passed away Dec. 27, 2005, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born March 22, 1915, in Cherry Valley, the daughter of William and Alma (Hoffman) Madison.

On July 4, 1936, she married Clifford L. Snyder. He predeceased her April 3, 1972.

A lifelong resident of Cherry Valley, she was a 1936 graduate of Cherry Valley School.

Hilda was employed at the Baseball Shop in Cherry Valley, covering baseballs, for 17 years in the 1940-1950s.

She was the oldest charter member of the Cherry Valley Fire Department Auxiliary. She attended the Cherry Valley United Methodist Church all her life.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and will be dearly missed.

Survivors include a daughter, Beverly Putnam of Cherry Valley; a son, Gordon Snyder and his wife, Pattie, of Schenectady; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Snyder of Henderson; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was predeceased by a son, William Snyder, in 1992, and three sisters, Ethel Justice, Edna Stanton and Dorothy Perry.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005, at the United Methodist Church, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Lyman Johnson officiating.

Spring interment will take place in the Cherry Valley Cemetery.

A calling hour will precede the funeral service from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Hilda’s memory may be made to the United Methodist Church, Cherry Valley or the Cherry Valley Firemen’s Auxiliary.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
