Katherine J. Smith
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — Katherine J. Smith, 65, of Hunlock Creek, Pa., passed away Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005, at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Katherine was born in Oneonta, the daughter of George and Janet (Elderkin) Utter on Nov. 26, 1940.
She married Lawrence F. Smith in the town of Davenport on Jan. 15, 1983.
She worked as a computer aide for the Lake Lehman School District.
Kathy was a gentle, soft-spoken, loving wife, mother and grandmother.
She loved the outdoors; whether just taking a walk in the woods, tending to her horses, or fishing with her husband (when she actually caught fish). She was a true animal lover, especially her dogs. She also enjoyed sewing and gardening around the house.
She is survived by her husband, Lawrence; and their three children and their spouses, Teresa and John Roy of Raleigh, N.C., Toni and Gary Bannister of LaGrange, Ky., and Thomas and Lorraine Alley of Jamesville; her three brothers, Robert and Kay Utter of Delhi, Ronald and Ann Utter of Oneonta, and Lawrence and Carol Utter of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; her two sisters and their spouses, Cheryl and Michael Lawyer of Schenevus and Doris and Gary Anglehart of Missouri; several nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Joanne Smith of Oneonta.
She was a devoted grandmother to her five grandchildren, Danielle, JJ, Timmy, Sydney and Matt.
She was predeceased by both of her parents, George and Janet Utter.
Friends may call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, in the morning from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006, at which time the family will be in attendance. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell officiating.
Burial will be in the spring in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Matie H. Adamany
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Matie H. Adamany, 86, of Main Street passed away peacefully Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005, in St. Luke’s Medical Center, New Hartford, with the comfort of her knowing her husband was at her bedside.
She was born July 24, 1919, in the town of Columbia, a daughter of the late Leo and Elizabeth Skinner Hills. A lifelong area resident, she was educated in Columbia schools.
For more than 29 years she worked at The Farmers’ Museum, Cooperstown, retiring in 1990. She skillfully demonstrated the art of weaving and spinning. Matie enjoyed sharing her knowledge with those who inquired.
On Nov. 4, 1989, she married Samuel Adamany in the Congregational Church, Bridgewater. Their life together was one of true devotion and admiration. When she spoke of her family, she radiated the biggest smile. Her daily life was lived in a gentle, caring and honest manner, and that loving smile will be long remembered.
Surviving besides her husband of 16 years, Samuel; is her daughter, Beverly Thorne and her husband, Louis, of Elmira, Mich.; two grandchildren, Jean Ann Bollinger of Mount Pleasant, Mich., and Clifford Thorne of Elmira, Mich.; four great-grandsons; a niece, Elizabeth Gooden and her husband, Charles, of West Winfield; and a nephew, the Rev. Edmond Cotton and his wife, Lucy, of Port Jervis.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Lillian Cotton; and a grandson, John Allen Thomas.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court St., Herkimer.
Interment in Oak Hill Cemetery will be private and at the convenience of the family.
There are no calling hours.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Richfield Springs Volunteer Rescue Squad. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Yolanda E. Gyarmati
MARGARETVILLE — Yolanda E. Gyarmati, 85, of Ruff Road, Margaretville, passed away Friday, Dec. 30, 2005, at Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.
Yolanda was born Nov. 30, 1920, in New Brunswick, N.J.
She married Ernest Gyarmati. He died Jan. 9, 1957.
Yolanda was a Postmaster at Franklin Park, N.J., from March 4, 1968, to Jan. 2, 1985.
In 1999, Yolanda moved to Margaretville to live with her granddaughter, Dawn Maxim, who took special care of her since then.
Yolanda was a member of the Sacred Heart Church and the Sacred Heart Women’s Society and NAPUS.
Yolanda is survived by her son, Richard Gyarmati, Oxford, N.J.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest; and by her two sons, Ernest and David.
Calling hours were 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 2, 2006, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, at the Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville, with the Very Rev. James J. McDevitt as celebrant.
Burial will be in the St. Peters Cemetery, Brunswick, N.J.
In memory of Yolanda E. Gyarmati, contributions may be made to the Margaretville Memorial Hospital Memorial Fund.

Mary T. Downs
OTEGO — Mary T. Downs, 89, most recently of Otego and formerly of the town of Davenport, passed away Sunday, Jan. 1, 2006, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.
She was born April 30, 1916, in New York City, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Tansits) Dominkowitz.
She married William P. Downs on Dec. 1, 1945. He predeceased her Feb. 18, 1998.
She and her husband moved from the hustle of New York City to West Davenport in 1977.
She was employed by Agway for many years and retired in 1981.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Church and loved life right to the end.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Ann Downs, whom she was very close to after her husband’s passing; her nieces, Susan and her husband, Peter Korcynski, and Terry and her husband, Michael McManus; her nephews, Peter, Michael and Patrick; her loved godchildren; sisters-in-law, Theresa Dominkowitz and Beverly Dominkowitz; a dear cousin, Francis; and many friends and family.
She was predeceased by her parents; two brothers, Frank and Christopher (Mickey) Dominkowitz; and nephew, Michael Dominkowitz.
Mary is also survived by her extended family, including Cindy Webster and her family, whom she lived with for the last few years while battling Alzheimer’s and dementia. They gave her much joy, love and care.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, at St. Mary’s Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Joseph Benintende, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be in the spring in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon, Jan. 8, 2006, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s School or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Wayne Wendall VanSteenburg
ONEONTA — Wayne Wendall VanSteenburg Jr., 47, of Oneonta died Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 30, 1958, in Oneonta, the son of Wayne Sr. and Dorothy (Clapper) VanSteenburg.
Wayne married Jeannette Louise Lambert in Oneonta.
For 10 years, Wayne worked for Vet’s Sanitation and then worked at Denny’s Restaurant as a dishwasher and prep cook.
He enjoyed going fishing with his dad and spending time with his family, especially his stepgrandchildren.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Jeannette VanSteenburg of Oneonta; his father, Wayne W. VanSteenburg Sr. of Oneonta; three stepchildren, Thomas Allan Perry, Shashona Lee Perry and Leo Robert Perry, all of Amsterdam; one sister and her husband, Valerie and Robert Braun of Otego; one brother, William VanSteenburg of Oneonta; and nine stepgrandchildren, Brandon, Christie, Kyle, Elaina, Jasmine, Shane, Shawn, Leo and Kailine.
He was predeceased by his mother, Dorothy VanSteenburg, and his sister, Susie Huestis.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.
There will be no funeral services.

James M. Makemson
ANDES — James M. Makemson, 74, of Andes passed away Monday, Jan. 2, 2006, at his residence.
Jim was born Jan. 14, 1931, in White Plains, the son of Charles Makemson and Eleanora Floerke.
He married Anita Duncker in 1954 in Carmel. She predeceased him Sept. 10, 2004.
Jim served in the United States Navy. He worked as a general contractor with painting and woodworking in White Plains.
Jim enjoyed his cats and wildlife and also enjoyed watching football and boxing.
He was a member of the German American Club of Northern Catskills.
Jim is survived by one daughter, Karen Makemson of Stamford, Conn.; and one niece and one nephew.
Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6 and Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6, 2006, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville with the Rev. Robert Engelhardt officiating.
Burial will be in Ferncliff Cemetery, Hartsdale, at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 9, 2006.

Lillian Mae Hotaling
HARTWICK — Lillian Mae Hotaling, 70, died peacefully Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006, at her home in Hartwick with her family by her side.
Born on June 16, 1935, in Utica, she was the daughter of the late Floyd and Mildred (Wightman) Mayne.
Mrs. Hotaling graduated from West Winfield High School.
She married Archie Hotaling Sr. on Dec. 11, 1954. They have been residents of Hartwick for 32 years.
She worked in the food service department at SUCO for 34 years.
Lillian enjoyed playing cards and dice games with her family. She also enjoyed daily car rides with her husband.
She is survived by her husband, Archie Hotaling Sr.; her children, Archie Jr. and his wife, Brenda, of Surgoinsville, Tenn., Steven and his fiancee, Chris Fitcher, of Syracuse, Deborah Ritchey and her husband, Rick, of Otego and Stanley and his friend, Sharon Teeter, of Davenport; her grandchildren, Alicia Chase and her husband, Peter, Heidi, Pamela and Sherri Hotaling, Stacey and Justin Ritchey, Steven, Heather and Amber Hotaling; two great-grandchildren, Dakota and Shayne Chase; her sister, Vera Dalton and her husband, Logan, of Bedford, Texas; her brother, Keith Mayne and his wife, Marilyn, of Burlington Flats; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 34 River St., Otego, on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006, from 1 to 3 p.m. A funeral service will be held immediately after the viewing at 3 p.m.
Interment will be held in the spring in the Maryland Cemetery.
