Harvey Gray

HAMDEN — Harvey Gray, 86, of Hamden, died on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006, at the Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

He was born July 27, 1919, in Downsville, the son of Guy and Esther (Kinch) Gray.

He married Virginia Shaw on June 8, 1940.

Together, Mr. Gray and his wife operated a farm on Basin Clove, Hamden for 42 years, eventually settling in Hamden at a home on state route 10.

Harvey enjoyed baseball and played for the Hamden Polecats for many years. An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting and playing horseshoes.

He is survived by his wife Virginia; two daughters, Beverly and Merlyn Wood of Walton, and Joyce and John Campbell of Maryland; eight grandchildren, Darlene, David, Johnny, Brenda, Don, Chris, Duane and Paul; 12 great-grandchildren and four sisters, Katherine and Sarah of Walton, Nina of Dover Plains, and Norma of Madrid.

He was predeceased by five brothers; Roy, Merritt, David, Stanley and Richard.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi with the Rev. Jeffrey Staples officiating.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 9, at the funeral home.

Spring burial will be in Paige Cemetery, Downsville.

In lieu of flowers contributions are asked to be made to either Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Main Street, Delhi, or the American Cancer Society, 31 Adams Avenue Endicott, NY 13760, in loving memory of Harvey Gray.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Stephen Montgomery

ROXBURY — Stephen Montgomery, 76, of Roxbury, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006, at his residence on Greene Road.

He was born July 10, 1929, in New York City to Chandler and Elizabeth Trump Montgomery.

Stephen was a self-employed artist and sculptor. In earlier years, he worked at the Door Store in Greenwich Village. He graduated from Bard College with an art degree and received his master’s degree in fine arts from Cranbrook Academy in Michigan.

He was a resident of Roxbury for 20 years having moved there from West Park.

He is survived by a brother, Christopher Montgomery of Middletown, Conn.; two nieces and a great-nephew.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Hilda M. Cook

ONEONTA — Hilda M. Cook, 85, died Friday, Jan. 6, 2006, at A.O. Fox Nursing Home with her family by her side.

Born June 14, 1920, in Oneonta, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Lena (Dexter) Van Hoesen.

Mrs. Cook married Shirley Raymond Cook on June 23, 1938, at the River Street Baptist Church. Together they enjoyed watching wrestling and traveling to stock car races. Mr. Cook predeceased her on May 31, 1973.

Hilda retired in 1985 from Hartwick College, after working there for 17 years. After that, she enjoyed traveling. Her trip to Hawaii was the highlight of her life.

She is survived by her children, Edie Cook and her husband Melvin of Oneonta, Evelyn Wade of Otego, Elsie Terpenning of North Carolina and Ronald Cook and his wife Patricia of Florida; her grandchildren, Cindy Peck of Arizona, Cheryl Rotolo of Oneonta, Michael Smith of Oneonta, Deborah Stevens of Schenevus, Jeff Smith of Otego, Ray Smith of Bainbridge, Shawn Wade of Otego, Dan and Doug Wade of Virginia, Monica and Michelle Terpenning of North Carolina and Ron Cook Jr. and David Cook of Florida; her sisters, Leona, Isabelle and Millie and her brothers, Norman and Benjamin. She is also survived by many great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

There will be no calling hours.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Mel Farmer from River Street Baptist Church officiating.

Spring interment will be in the Cook Cemetery.

Arrangements are being handled by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

George Robert Hoyt

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — George Robert Hoyt, 57, an engineer who had been president of the transportation consulting firm George Hoyt & Associates in Alexandria, died Dec. 2, 2005, at his home in Alexandria. He had lung cancer.

Mr. Hoyt started his business in 1987. His clients included the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority.

Previously, he worked for Diemler & Diekemper Inc., where he was head of the computer applications and services division and Sterling Systems, that became a subsidiary of Planning Research Corp. At PRC, he became department manager responsible for the financial and technical management of a multimillion-dollar contract with the General Services Administration.

Mr. Hoyt was born in Margaretville and grew up in Grand Gorge. He was a mechanical engineering graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he also received a master’s degree in transportation planning. Early in his career he worked for Roger Creighton Associates, transportation planners based near Albany.

A Washington area resident since 1978, he was a former volunteer for the Mount Vernon Youth Athletic Association and community groups in the Mount Vernon neighborhood of Alexandria. His hobbies included swimming, doing crossword puzzles and collecting sports cars.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Francis Hoyt of Alexandria, who he married in 1969; one son, Andrew Hoyt of Boulder, Colo.; one daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Steve Weller; three grandsons, Kyle, Trent and Lance Weller; one brother, John Hoyt of Delhi; two sisters, Patricia Hoyt of the San Francisco, Calif. area and Virginia Hoyt of Delhi.

Services were held in Alexandria.

Glenn E. Benedict

WALTON — Glenn E. Benedict, 86, of Walton passed away Friday evening, Jan. 6, 2006, at Countryside Care Center, Delhi, after a long illness.

Glenn was born in Merrickville on April 16, 1919, the son of the late Olin and Myrtle Johnston Benedict.

He married the former Charlotte Forester on July 5, 1945, in Verona. She survives.

Glenn served his country in the Army during World War II.

He worked for more than 25 years, first as a truck driver and later as transportation manager, at Breakstone’s in Walton, retiring in 1971. He later worked as a truck driver for the Delaware County Highway Department.

Glenn was a member of the Wakeman Brook Sportsman Club and the Walton Fire Department.

His true love, though, was shaping oak into cabinets, bookcases, tables, and many other projects that he proudly made for his family and friends. Glenn also loved to go to the local restaurants and "spec out" trucks with his friends over coffee.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte; two sons, Roger O. Benedict and his wife, M. Diane, Walton, Scott E. Benedict and his wife, Lisa, Unadilla; two daughters, Susan K. and Sandra Benedict, both of Walton; daughter-in-law, Diane Benedict, Walton; five grandchildren, Joy Williams, Rebecca, Jessica, Amber and Kali Benedict; two nephews, David and Wayne Bullis; and several cousins.

He was predeceased by a son, Lynn A. Benedict, in 1996.

Funeral services will be held privately at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, Walton, with the Rev. William Robertson officiating. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Glenn’s memory may be made to Walton Fire Department and EMS, 61 West St., Walton. Envelopes for memorial contributions are available by contacting the funeral home.

Esther Davis

MARYLAND — Esther Davis, 96, passed away Monday, Jan. 2, 2006, at the Masonic Home in Utica.

She was born July 27, 1909, in Mulberry, Ark., the daughter of James Porter Conley and Maybelle (Gates) Conley.

She married Jesse Davis on Jan. 1, 1944, in Joplin, Mo. He predeceased her Aug. 10, 2005.

Mrs. Davis was employed for Southwestern Bell Company and New York Telephone Company in Nyack for many years.

In 1978, she and her family moved to Maryland from Madrid.

Mrs. Davis was very active in various Christian churches. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Ogdenburg and the Schenevus chapter; she was a past president of the VFW Auxiliary in Rockland County and a past district deputy of the Rebekah Lodge.

Mrs. Davis is survived by her son, Gary N. and his wife, Sandra, Davis of Cugiak, Ark.; grandchildren, Brian and his wife, Sabrina, Kerri, Daryl, Nancy, Jesse David, Christopher, Carl, James, Becky, Bonnie, Michael, Vicky and Cheryl; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Alaka Skinner; her son, Conley Davis; three grandsons, Brett, Scott and Jon Kerry; and a granddaughter, Melissa.

Calling hours will be from noon to the service time at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006, at the Heller Funeral Home in Schenevus with the Rev. Roger Best and the Rev. Stephen Fournier officiating.

Interment will be held in the Schenevus Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

The Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., in Schenevus, is serving the family.

Kenneth Willard Norton

ONEONTA — Kenneth Willard Norton, 81, died Jan. 7, 2006, at The Otsego Manor in Cooperstown.

Born May 4, 1924, he was the son of the late Menzo and Anita (Eckerson) Norton.

Mr. Norton served in the Army from 1948-1952. In 1970, he started working in the kitchen at SUCO.

He was an avid bowler and giver. He would do anything for anyone. He loved to eat, whether it was his own cooked meal or dining out, drink coffee, tell stories and go for walks.

Mr. Norton was a member of the Main Street Baptist Church and the Oneonta American Legion Post No. 259.

He is survived by a cousin, Ruth Sherman and her husband, Russell (Red), of Alabama; and many other cousins.

He was predeceased by a half brother, Russell Fonda; two uncles, Leon and Leo Norton; and a cousin, George Norton.

A graveside service and interment will be held in the spring in Glenwood Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Oneonta American Legion Post, 279 Chestnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are being handled by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Dorothy (Call) Pestana

OTEGO — Dorothy (Call) Pestana, 85, of Otego went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006, after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Somerville, Mass., on May 10, 1920, the daughter of Frank Call and Mary L. (Sousa) Call.

She was married to Anthony Pestana, who died in 1995.

She is survived by her four sons, Darrell S. Pestana of Otego, Jeffrey Pestana of Derry, N.H., Mark E. Pestana of Newmarket, N.H., and Richard A. Pestana of Tilton, N.H.; as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and those who reside in the area are Jordon Pestana, Joshua Pestana of Otego, and Freddie Daniels and Michelle Daniels of Schenevus.

There will be no calling hours, and a memorial service will be held at a later date at The Otsego Manor Chapel.

Friends who wish are asked to donate to the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 2680, North Canton, OH 44720 or the Catskill Area Hospice, 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820, in her memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Arnold W. Callahan Sr.

LAKELAND, Fla. — Arnold W. Callahan Sr., "Butch," 68, of Lakeland, Fla., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, at Lakeland Regional Medical Hospital. The cause of his death was congested heart failure.

Born in Schenectady, Arnold was the son of the late Lewis and Florence Beams Callahan. He was a graduate of Charlotte Valley High School.

From 1956 to 1960, Arnold faithfully served his country in the United States Navy, receiving an honorable discharge.

He was employed by Watkins as a truck driver for 19 years. Butch was an avid sportsman. He was loved by all who knew him and always knew how to make everyone laugh. He will be deeply missed by everyone.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Mary; his children, Arnie (Andrea) Callahan Jr. of Rotterdam, Patty Callahan and John Callahan of Schenectady, Theresa Callahan and Diane (Mike) Sykes of Lakeland, Fla.; his stepson, Tommy Decker of Lakeland, Fla., and the late Dale Decker; his brothers, Larry and Leland Callahan and a sister, Jaci (Todd) Moore, all of East Meredith. Butch is also survived by 13 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Services will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 7 Washington Square, Albany, NY 12205 or the American Heart Association, 440 New Karner Rd., Albany, NY 12205.

Arrangements are by the Rossi & Ditoro Funeral Home, Schenectady.
