Reginald D. Miller Jr.

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. — Reginald D. Miller Jr., 69, of Brooksville, Fla., formerly of Oneonta, passed away March 4, 2006, after a long battle with cancer.

He was born Dec. 6, 1936, in A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He graduated from Oneonta High School when it was on Academy Street.

Reg worked for his father at Oneida Truck & Trailer Sales in Oneonta for several years, then went to work for the Victory Chain, started out in Oneonta, then Norwich and onto become the manager of the Sidney store.

He married Jeanette Scarzafava. She predeceased him. He was also predeceased by his parents, Reg and Billie Miller; and a brother, Thomas.

He moved to Florida in the 1960s and was employed by Florida Crushed Stone. He became a supervisor and head of OSHA, where he received several awards for safety. He took an early retirement due to heart problems.

He did volunteer work for Joni Industries and aided in many charities, St. Jude’s Hospital for Children being his dearest.

Reg is survived by his two children, Michael Miller, his friend, Sue Nelson, and Kathleen Miller and granddaughter, Angela Miller; his sister, Pat Solovitch, all of Oneonta; one nephew, Jud Shaffer; two nieces, Cindy Farmer of Zephyrhills, Fla., and Kelly Hutchinson of Homestead, Fla.; and Reg’s longtime friend, Vie Kowalcky.

A memorial service will be held at the families’ convenience.

Lillian W. Henderson

ONEONTA — Lillian W. Henderson, 91, of Oneonta, passed away Monday, March 6, 2006, at home.

She was born Jan. 30, 1915, in Bronx, the daughter of Fred and Louisa (Young) Fien.

Lillian married Elliott Henderson on March 6, 1938, in Bronxville. Mr. Henderson predeceased her March 18, 1986.

For 30 years, Lillian worked as a clerk for New York Telephone Company in Yonkers.

She was a member of the Eastern Star in Westchester County and also the Amaranth of Westchester County.

While living in Georgia, she was a member of the Silver Hope Senior Group at Pope Presbyterian Church in Marietta, Ga.

Lillian was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be deeply missed.

Lillian is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Mike Borachok of Oneonta; two granddaughters, Jill Eichler and her husband, Steve, of Oneonta, and Heather Borachok and her husband, Larry Brockway, of Lake Placid; four great-grandchildren, Alexis Eichler of Oneonta, Michalea and Miranda Borachok of Lake Placid, and Devin Brockway of Lake Placid.

She was predeceased by her parents, Fred and Louisa Fien; and one brother, who was killed in action fighting the Battle of the Bulge, Fred Fien.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 9, 2006, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Gary Bonebrake, pastor of the Main Street Baptist Church, officiating. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday.

Burial will be in the Greenwood Union Cemetery, Rye.

Memorial contributions in Lillian’s name may be made to the American Heart Association, Heart Gifts Processing Center, PO Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220-3049 or to the Arthritis Foundation, Northeastern New York Chapter, 1717 Central Ave., Suite 105, Albany, NY 12205.

George Arthur Harrington

MORRIS — George Arthur Harrington, 71, of Morris, died Monday, March 6, 2006, at his home in Morris.

He was born March 22, 1934, in the town of New Lisbon, the son of Kenneth Arthur and Viola (Richards) Harrington.

He married Charlotte Marie Douglas on Aug. 18, 1957, at the Morris United Methodist Church.

He was employed with the New York State Department of Transportation for 30 years, retiring in 1996.

He was well-known for his tidiness and sense of humor. Telling a good joke was George’s fame; he knew one for every occasion. He kept a diary faithfully, which solved many a family discussion, and George also prided himself as keeper of the family stories.

His love of hunting, fishing and camping were evident by his 30 years of trips to Beaver River and Canada with the Valentines. He was a somewhat avid snowmobiler who traveled locally and to the Old Forge area. He was also known for his two favorite hobbies, mowing his large lawn and washing, waxing his shiny cars and trucks. He was a collector of John Deere tractors, guns and hats, and in his later years carved owls out of wood and stone.

He was a member of the Morris United Methodist Church and the Rods and Relics Car Club.

George, or "Poppy," as his grandchildren affectionately called him, is survived by his wife of over 48 years, Charlotte; his daughter, Janann Marie Phillips and her husband, John, of Williamson; and his beloved grandchildren, Tyler and Tricia. He is also survived by his siblings, Madeline Daniels and husband Larry of New Berlin, Eva Joy and husband Jerry of Morris, Hilda Bowen of Burlington Flats, Gary Harrington and wife Debby of Edmeston, Donna Mumbulo and husband Dennis of Edmeston, Ray Harrington and wife Penny of Garrattsville; his extended family who include Ken and Bette Coats and Al and Pat Deforest; as well as a multitude of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and in-laws.

He was predeceased by a brother, Roy Harrington; as well as several aunts, uncles and in-laws.

Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 9, 2006, at the United Methodist Church in Morris, with the Rev. Ann Blair officiating.

Burial will be in Hillington Cemetery in Morris.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make contributions to the United Methodist Church of Morris, PO Box 246, Morris, NY 13808 or the Morris Emergency Squad, PO Box 452, Morris, NY 13808, in George’s memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Robert Badger Seaver

COOPERSTOWN — Robert Badger Seaver, 81, died Sunday, March 5, 2006.

Bob was born in Boston on Sept. 15, 1924, to James Daniel Seaver and Margaret Stewart Brigham.

As a child, he spent summers on Otsego Lake at his grandfather’s camp and at Camp Chenango for Boys.

He graduated from Phillips Academy, Andover, in 1942, and from Amherst College as a member of the class of 1946. He also attended Williams College for one year in the U.S. Navy V-12 program and the Midshipman School at Notre Dame, before joining the crew of the destroyer U.S.S. Niblack DD 424 as first Lieutenant for sea duty during World War II.

He began his teaching career at Episcopal Academy in Philadelphia. He then taught at The Marin Country Day School near San Francisco and for several summers at the Mohican Reading School before moving permanently to Cooperstown in 1960, when he became supervisor of the experimental "talking typewriter" reading program at Bassett Hall. He also taught at Cooperstown Elementary, ran the "Six Mile House" antique shop near the Hickory Grove Inn and began the newspaper column "The Badger."

Bob was a proud member of the P.A.E. Society and also of the PSI fraternity at Amherst.

Locally he served as the president of the Cooperstown PTA in the early 1960s, was a founding and current member of the Brookwood Foundation, and was a current member of the Otsego Golf Club and the Mohican Club.

He was also a charter member of the Friends of the Cooperstown Library, a former member of the Cooperstown Country Club, and an original member of the Town of Otsego Planning Board.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Patricia Sheil, after 30 years of marriage. In the spring of 2005, after 24 years together, he married Veronica Pilar Gil.

He leaves Veronica; his five children, Brigham Robert, Margaret Ann, Sarah Ann, Maud Stewart and Daniel Badger; Veronica’s two children, James Knox Patrick IV and Lori Woodward Patrick Cabrera; two sisters, Margaret Ann Seaver and Sally Seaver Johnson; three stepbrothers, Harry, Buddy and Bobby Hopewell; three sisters-in-law, Gertrude McCormick, Dolores Gil and JoAnn Smith; his mother-in-law, Julia Gil; 11 grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service celebrating Bob’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 11, 2006, at Christ Church, Cooperstown, with the Rev. Samuel B. Abbott, rector officiating.

Burial will be in the Springfield Cemetery in the spring.

Bob can be remembered by giving blood to the American Red Cross, or by gifts to the Louis Busch Cancer Treatment Center at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown or to the Catskill Area Hospice, Oneonta.

Arrangements are under the supervision of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Margaret Wilcox Decker

ONEONTA — Margaret Wilcox Decker, 79, of Oneonta and Stuart, Fla., passed away peacefully in her home in Oneonta on Tuesday, April 11, 2006, surrounded by her family.

She was born in Oneonta on April 26, 1926, the daughter of Thomas and Madeline Wilcox.

She attended St. Mary’s School and Oneonta High School. She earned her nursing degree from the College of St. Rose and her BS and MS from SUCO.

Before her marriage, she worked as a nurse at Fox Hospital and for area doctors.

Many area residents will remember Mrs. Decker as the school nurse who took care of their scrapes and pains. Margaret worked as a school nurse teacher for the Oneonta School District from 1964 until 1986. She also taught courses for school nurse teachers at SUCO for several years.

She was a member of the Capital District Nurses Association and the St. Rose Alumnae Organization for many years.

She married William Howard Decker on June 28, 1947. Together, they loved family trips to Cape Cod, frequent get-togethers with many friends, bridge club, golf, and sharing the goodies from their business, Decker’s Bakery, with all their children’s friends. In retirement, they loved to travel and visit their children and grandchildren.

Their winters in Florida were full of beach time, entertaining, and travel.

Margaret was predeceased by her parents; her husband, William; her infant son, John; and her daughter, Janet Decker Darling.

She will be missed by her three sons and three daughters, Thomas Howard Decker of Troy, N.H., Carol Forman-Pemberton (Donald) of Burnt Hills, Kathleen Byrum (Craig) of Manlius, Marianne Carter (Kevin) of Lake Oswego, Ore., William James Decker (Maureen) of Oneonta, and Robert Michael Decker (Deborah) of Mission Viejo, Calif. She will always be in the hearts of her 17 grandchildren, Luke, Jake, Rory, Brenna, Daniel, Braden, Melissa, Stephen, Matthew, Brian, Kelly, Seth, Colin, Jenny, Todd, Casey and Danni. Seven great-grandchildren will also miss her, Zachary, Evyn, Megan, Connor, Merrick, Jaxon and Christian. Margaret is also survived by her dear friend, George Moore of Stuart, Fla.

Margaret’s family is very grateful for the loving professional support they received throughout Margaret’s illness from members of the Catskill Area Hospice and At Home Care agency, and several private-duty attendants. They are also grateful for the supportive visits and phone calls of Margaret’s many loving friends.

Calling hours will be held at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St. in Oneonta, from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, April 17, 2006.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at St. Mary’s Church, with the Rev. Anthony Chiaramonte officiating, followed by interment in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc. 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820 or to the charity of choice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Jean C. Combs

WALTON — Jean C. Combs, 82, a lifelong resident of Walton, passed away Tuesday evening, April 11, 2006, at Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

Jean was born in Walton, the daughter of the late Arthur and LaGretta Chapman Crawshaw, on Feb. 13, 1924. She was a graduate of Walton Central School, class of 1942.

She was married to the late Walter Richard Combs.

Jean was a bookkeeper employed by Antenna Systems/Time Warner, Walton. She was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church, Walton. She also was a participant of the Delaware County Senior Dining Program.

Jean is survived by one son, Scott and Jessica Combs of Charleston, S.C.; a granddaughter, Ashley Combs, and a special friend, Kathy Shelton of Walton.

She was predeceased by a son, Jeffrey A. Combs.

A graveside service, under the direction of Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, Walton, will take place in Walton Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 17, with the Rev. Jennifer Matison Juliano officiating.

Memorial contributions, in Jean’s memory, may be made to the Congregational Church, 4 Mead St., Walton, NY 13856.

William J. Gaudreau Sr.

UNADILLA — William J. Gaudreau Sr., 69, of Unadilla, passed away Tuesday afternoon April 11, 2006, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, after a short illness.

He was born March 12, 1937, in New York City, the son of the late Alphonse and Ellen (Rohan) Gaudreau. He married the former Patricia Diamond on Oct. 3, 1975, in Staten Island. She survives him.

William served in the United States Navy from 1956 to 1960. He was a retired superintendent of B. H. Tyrrel Inc. of New York, New York and had been a resident of Unadilla since 1993. He was a former member of the Sidney Moose Lodge 277 and the Sidney VFW.

William is survived by his wife of 30 years, Patricia Gaudreau of Unadilla; his sons, William J. Gaudreau Jr. of New Jersey and Robert W. Gaudreau of Norwich; his daughter, Jamie E. Gaudreau of South Carolina; his sister, Mary Lotti of New Jersey as well as several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of William J. Gaudreau Sr. will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 14, at the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla (directly off Exit 10 of I-88). The Rev. Gordon A. Polenz, pastor of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Sidney, will officiate.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the supervision of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Charles N. Tremper

ONEONTA — Charles Norman Tremper, 85, of Oneonta, formerly of Maryland, died at his home on Monday, April 10, 2006.

Born Oct. 19, 1920, in Liberty, he was the son of the late Robert J. and Ruth A. (Hotchkin) Tremper.

Mr. Tremper served in the United States Army during W.W.II, receiving the Good Conduct Medal and the W.W.II Victory Medal. During that time he married Jean Beaulieu Tremper in Oneonta on Jan. 20, 1946. He worked more than 25 years for Reinhardt Home Heating as the service manager, until he opened Tremper’s Real Estate, which he and his wife ran together until retirement in 1987.

Charles was an active member and usher of First United Methodist Church, a member of the Kiwanis Club and AARP. He served on the Otsego County Board of Realtors and was active with the American Cancer Society. He enjoyed league bowling, fishing with his grandchildren, dining out, traveling to Florida, and playing cards and backgammon with family and friends. He also loved baseball and listening to country music.

Charles is survived by his daughters, Constance (Connie) Lee Schiliro of Portsmouth, R.I. and Sharon Marie Rumenapp of Oneonta; his grandchildren, David Rumenapp, Christian and his wife, Melissa Rumenapp, Marc and his wife, Jamie Schiliro, and Karyn Schiliro; his great-grandchildren, Madisyn Mello, Haley Rumenapp and Samantha Rose Schiliro, his sister, Mildred Whipple of New Berlin and a sister-in-law, Doris Gallagher of Oneonta.

He was predeceased by his wife, Jean B. Tremper, in 2003, his brother, Nelson and his sister, Ruth.

Family will receive friends at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta from 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday, April 14.

A funeral service will be held immediately following at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Thomas Clemow of First United Methodist Church officiating.

Interment will be in Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in Charles’ name to the American Cancer Society, 31 Adams Ave., Endicott, NY 13760.

Arrangements are being handled by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Yvonne V. Musson

SIDNEY — Yvonne V. Musson, 84, of Sidney and formerly of Gilbertsville, passed away on Tuesday, April 11, 2006, at A. O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born in Wilkes Barre, Pa., on Oct. 14, 1921, the daughter of Llewellyn Jefferson Davis and Claudine A. (Pozel) Davis.

She was married to Albert Koepke, who died several years ago. She was also married to Richard Musson in San Carlos, Mexico, on Dec. 7, 1967. He died in 1986.

She was a registered nurse, having worked at The Hospital, Sidney, as well as private-duty nursing for many years. She was a member of the Eastern Star of Unadilla and the United Methodist Church of Unadilla.

Yvonne is survived by her children, Faith Schrier and husband Richard of Sidney, Albert Koepke of Unadilla, Kevan Koepke of Sidney, Joy Moore and husband Michael of Esperance, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Claudine Gillen and husband James of Chili, four half-sisters, Dawn Punkoney of Camp Merde, Ariz., and Connie, Betty and Laura.

She was predeceased by a son, Kenneth Koepke.

Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 13, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.

Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 14, with the Rev. Ann Blair officiating.

Committal services and burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville.

Those who wish are asked to donate to the American Cancer Society, 31 Adams Ave., Endicott, NY 13760 or the Sidney Emergency Squad, 45 River St., Sidney, NY, 13838, in her memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Carleton F. (Bud) Payne

MELBOURNE, Fla. — Carleton F. (Bud) Payne passed away at home April 11, 2006.

Bud was born Aug. 10, 1926, to Mortimer M and Coralie Reynolds Payne.

He retired from the New York State Power Authority in Gilboa in 1991.

He was a World War II veteran.

Bud was a loving husband, a most excellent dad, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joan; daughter, Sherry (Steve) Palmer; son, Randy Payne, all of Melbourne; granddaughters, Stephanie Simmons, Stacie (John) Doran and Carlie (Manny) Alvare; three great-grandbabies, Ethan, Katie, and Nicholas; sister, Jean Cronin; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be a memorial service at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Health First, 1900 Dairy Road, Melbourne, FL 32904.

Davis Seawinds Funeral Home in Melbourne, Fla., is in charge of arrangements.
