Elizabeth Burton Green was born September 2, 1922, in Gloversville, New York, the daughter of James and Helen (Tate) Green. She attended school in Gloversville, graduating from high school in 1939. She spent the next year at Walnut Hill School in Natick, Massachusetts and the next three years at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, graduating in 1943. Betsy then worked in New York City as a secretary, first at her father's glove manufacturing business, the Daniel Hays Company, and then at Union Theological Seminary.

On September 1, 1945, she was united in marriage to David J. Maitland in Gloversville, NY. They lived in New York their first year and then Madison, Wisconsin (1946-52), Beloit, Wisconsin (1952-53), New York (1953-56) and since 1956, their home has been Northfield, Minnesota, across the street from Carleton College, where David served as chaplain. From 1970 to 1980 she worked as an aide in the Sibley Elementary School library, where she befriended many children and developed love of children's literature. She was a faithful member of the First United Church of Christ and served as a deacon. She belonged to the Northfield Garden Club, Friends of the Library, and P.E.O. Her gestures of love were generous and brilliantly accurate - she knew when a friend needed a listening ear or a ride to church. In the arts of hospitality and of gift giving she was unsurpassed. She relished books, music, theater, and a vigorous game of tennis. She delighted above all in her family, who give eternal thanks for the blessings of her life among us.
