He retired in 1987 after 35 years as an equipment test technician at General Electric, Utica. He was past chief of the Lairdsville Fire Department, and a member of Lairdsville Methodist Church and the Amateur Radio Club. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors: His wife of 47 years, the former Gay Houck; two daughters, Laurie of Vernon and Amy of Verona; a son, Tim of Vernon; a sister, Leja Sharp of Massachusetts; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Malecki Funeral Home. Burial, Evergreen Cemetery, Westmoreland. Calling hours, 1 to 3 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, 23 Front St., Vernon. Richard "Rick" Gibson, 73, of Syracuse died Sunday. Born in Syracuse, he lived in the Syracuse area most of his life. He had worked for the Syracuse Department of Public Works and was a Navy veteran. Survivors: His wife of 30 years, the former Gloria Wilson; two daughters, Thelma Hanson and Jean Koch, both of Syracuse; seven sons, Richard II of North Syracuse, Gary, Michael and James, all of Vermont, Richard III, Donald and Robert, all of Syracuse; 22 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at Butler-Badman Funeral Home. Burial, Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Calling hour, 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, 4504 W. Catherin P. Burton

Catherin P. Burton, 83, of Buffalo, formerly of Canastota, died May 21. Born in Beckley, W.Va., she grew up in Hinton, W.Va., and lived in Canastota 41 years before moving to Buffalo 10 years ago. She was a former member of First Presbyterian Church of Canastota and a member of First Presbyterian Church of Buffalo, where she was an elder, clerk of session and elder commissioner. She also was active with the church Women's Association, Couples Club and various committees. Her husband, Frederic C., died previously. Survivors: Two sons, Frederic C. II of Mount Airy, Md. and Stephen H. of Jacksonville, Fla.; three daughters, Nancy M. Burton and Mary Louise Ricchuitti, both of Albany, and the Rev. Dorothy Burton Pearman of Buffalo; three brothers, Paul Phipps of Charlottesville, Va., Olin Phipps of Porterfield,  Calif., and Ray Phipps of True, W.Va.; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. Robert D. Chestnut Sr

Robert D. Chestnut Sr., 78, of Syracuse, died Tuesday. Born in Worcester, Mass., he lived in Syracuse since 1946. He retired from Consolidated Industries of Greater Syracuse and was a Syracuse building contractor for 20 years. He was a communicant of Most Holy Rosary Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, the former Eleanor Barclay; four daughters, Mary Osterman of Marcellus, Margaret Chestnut and Patricia O'Neil, both of Syracuse and Susan O'Neil of Fairport; three sons, Robert Jr., Richard and Andrew, all of Syracuse; a sister, Dorothy Cheetham of Easton, Md.; 17 grandchildren. Samuel D. Contrada, 74, of Cicero died Tuesday. Born in Rome, he lived in the Cicero and North Syracuse areas for the last 50 years. He retired in 1987 as an engineer for General Electric Co. after more than 37 years and retired in 1995 as a subcontractor for Ryan Homes after nine years. He golfed in General Electric leagues. He was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church in North Syracuse. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II. Survivors: His wife of 35 years, the former Patricia Lero; two daughters, Adrienne LaRochelle of Central Square and Molly D. Contrada of Cicero; two sons, Joseph M. of New York City and Samuel J. of Martinez,  Calif.; five sisters, Helen Hall of Rockport, Maine, Mary Mangino and Antoinetta McLellen, both of Rome, Philomena Kobza of Kenmore and Josephine McLellen of Westmoreland; two brothers, Dominick D. of Jewell and John D. of Rome; four grandchildren. She graduated from Fabius High School, where she was captain of the girls' basketball team, and the State University College at Cortland. She was a teacher in Fabius. He was an electrician at General Electric Co. for 36 years. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clay and its choir. He was a life member of the Clay Historical Society. He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II. Survivors: His wife of 51 years, the former Madolyn H. Hurley; a daughter, Cynthia M. Allen of Pulaski; two sons, Robert G. and Karl W. Jr., both of Pulaski; a sister, Marion Strough of LaFargeville; a brother, Hugh Hax of Plessis; nine grandchildren. Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Foster-Hax Funeral Home. Burial, Pulaski Cemetery.
