Timothy J. VanAlstine

Mr. Timothy J. VanAlstine, 57, of Darge Dr., Apopka, Florida (formerly of Ames, NY), died on Saturday, October 4, 2003 at Florida Central Regional Hospital after a long illness.

Mr. VanAlstine was born on August 27, 1946 in Amsterdam, New York, the son of Harold and Mary C. Conrad VanAlstine.

Mr. VanAlstine was a graduate of Canajoharie High School, class of 1964. While in high school, he played in a band called the Diablos which went on to represent Montgomery County at the World Fair in New York City.
Mr. VanAlstine was most recently the owner and operator of the Black Gold Seal Coat in Florida. Previously, he was employed at the former Ray Kimball Electric in Nelliston, NY and Ames Building Supplies as an electrician.

Mr. VanAlstine was a resident of Florida since 1976, previously living in Canajoharie, NY. He was a veteran of Vietnam, serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1964-1968 and was of Protestant faith.

He was a member of the VFW Post No. 2093, the American Legion Post No. 19 and the Shriner "Bahia Temple," all of Orlando, Florida. He was also a member of F.A.A.M. Hamilton Lodge No. 79 in Canajoharie, NY. He was an avid painter of landscapes and enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved animals.

He married the former Karen Jeanne Smith of Sprout Brook on October 1, 1966 in Fort Plain, NY.

Survivors include his wife, Karen J. VanAlstine of Apopka, FL; his mother, Mary C. VanAlstine of Canajoharie, NY; two sons, James P. VanAlstine and is wife, SSG. Lani "Ferrell" of Apopka, FL and 1st Lt. Timothy J. VanAlstine and his wife Beth (Hull) of Longwood, FL and stationed in Germany; one daughter, Teresa L. and her husband, Billy Dalton Dixon of Apopka, FL; eight grandchildren, James and Reed VanAlstine, Justin, Jarrod, Ashley and Devan Dixon, all of Apopka, FL and Tyler VanAlstine of Longwood, FL; one sister, Bonnie Chanell and her husband Tom of Fultonville, NY; one brother, Terry VanAlstine and his wife Janyce (Jones) of Palatine Bridge, NY; one cousin; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his father, Harold VanAlstine, July 28, 1985.

A 2:00 p.m. memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 12, 2003 at the chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home Inc., 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie, NY with the Rev. Wayne Cole officiating.

Burial will be in the Mapletown Cemetery in Canajoharie with full military honors conducted at graveside by the Fort Plain VFW Earl Stock Memorial Post No. 3275.

Family will receive friends and relatives from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service on October 12, at the funeral home.

Charles 'Birch' Schults

Charles (Birch) Schults, age 72, of Johnstown, died Tuesday at the Nathan Littauer Hospital. Born June 25, 1931 in the town of Johnstown, he was the son of Delton and Evelyn Edwards Schults and was a lifelong area resident.

From 1948 to 1952, Mr. Schults was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving in the Korean War.

He was a leather worker for various mills in the area, retiring from the Twin Cities Leather Company of Gloversville in 1984.
Mr. Schults was a lifetime member of the D.A.V.

Mr. Schults was predeceased by two brothers, Alton and Ronald Schults; one sister, Marjorie Schults and a grandson, Ronald G. Chamberlain.

He is survived by his wife, the former Beverly J. Beekman; a stepmother, Sally Schults of Batavia, NY; three stepsons, Robert T., Kenneth and Paul Chamberlain, all of Johnstown; two stepdaughters, Regenia Baker of Gloversville and Darlene Chamberlain of Texas; three half sisters, Kathy, Cindy and Cherri, all of Batavia, NY; 12 step grandchildren; and 10 step great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville, where a funeral service will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. Interment in North Bush Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Diabetes Assn. or the American Cancer Society.

Dorothea Merrill

Dorothea Merrill, died Oct. 1, 2002, in Marion, Ill. after a long illness. She was born in Johnstown Feb. 22, 1918, and lived in Fulton County until she moved to Marion in 1999. She was the daughter of Harry and Mamie Mills of Johnstown. She was preceded in death by one sister, Mildred Becker. She married Frank Hichens in Johnstown June 14, 1935, who died in 1964. They had three children, Frances Barbara, Frank Hichens III and Timothy, who died in 1955. She was a glove worker in many shops in both Johnstown and Gloversville, including Crescendoe Glove Co. She graduated from Cobleskill Community College as a horticulturist in 1968. In 1970, she married Robert Merrill of Gloversville, who died in 1999. She was known for her handiwork and ran a yarn shop from her home for many years. She instructed persons with disabilities the skills of knitting and crocheting.

In addition to her two children, she is survived by five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one nephew, Richard Becker and wife Bernice of Sunnyvale, Calif.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Ferndale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Hospice.

Robert E. Baker

Robert E. Baker, 84, of Gulfport, passed away Saturday, Nov. 9, at Egret Cove Nursing Center. Born in Gloversville, NY, he came here in 1982 from St. Mary's, PA where he was vice pres. of mfg. with AIRCO, Inc. He became associated with AIRCO in 1956 and retired in 1982. Prior to that we was with G.E. in Schenectady, NY. During WW II, he served in the U.S. Army and rose to the rating of 1st Lt. He was a self-taught machinist. Locally he was member of Most Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church. He was an avid golfer. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Virginia; one son, Bob of St. Petersburg; one brother, Henry of Gloversville, NY; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Denzil "Danny" Fountain Jr.

Mr. Denzil "Danny" Fountain Jr., 51, of Birch Lane, Broadalbin, died Thursday, November 14, 2002 at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville, after a long illness.

He was born November 3, 1951 in Dolgeville.

Mr. Fountain served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
He was employed for a time at the former Coleco until his retirement due to illness.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Kelso Fountain, whom he married September 26, 1970; two sons, Scott Fountain and John Thomas Fountain, both of Gloversville; one daughter, Brandy Fountain Williams of Gloversville; three grandchildren.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

Cremation was at Vale Crematory, Schenectady.

Arrangements are by the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 East Main Street, Johnstown.

Beverley J. Edick Rote

Beverley J. Edick Rote, 70, of Honeywell Corners Road, Broadalbin, NY, died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville.

Mrs. Rote was born Aug. 25, 1932, in Gloversville, the daughter of Edward and Anna Edick Sr. She was an avid bowler and former secretary of the Local WIBC Bowling Association. She was also a former den mother for the Cub Scouts.

Mrs. Rote was married June 29, 1952, to Volgert "Jack" Rote Jr., who died Aug. 10, 1998.
She is survived by sons, David M. Rote Sr. of Amsterdam, Neal A. Rote of Perth, Volgert "Jack" Rote III of Perth and Michael A. Rote of Broadalbin; brother, Edward Edick Jr. of Florida; sisters, Patricia Langlois of Broadalbin and Linda Hughes of Broadalbin; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her brother, Terry Edick.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Jeffords & Stewart Funeral Home, 85 W. Main St., Broadalbin, where a funeral service will be held Saturday, November 16, at 10:00 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Patricia A. Bush officiating. Interment will take place at Broadalbin Union Rural Cemetery, Broadalbin. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Rd., Loudonville, NY 12211.

Paul A. Miller

Paul A. Miller, 71, of Tribes Hill, New York, formerly of Broadalbin, New York, passed away Monday, November 14, 2005 at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam following a long illness.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Gladys Crockett Miller of Tribes Hill; a daughter, Susan Trulsen of Slingerlands, New York; a son, Lee Miller of Austin, Texas; a son, Roy Miller of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; a brother, Robert Miller of Gloversville, New York; and a sister, Lynn Dennis of Darien, Connecticut; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours or funeral service at Mr. Miller's request.

Anna Mae Miller

Anna Mae Miller, age 69, of Gloversville, died Tuesday at her home. Born May 25, 1935 in Gloversville, she was the daughter of Walter and Betty Beal Young. She graduated from Gloversville High School and was a life long area resident.

Anna Mae was a bus driver for the city of Rochester, NY, for several years and was also a short order cook in the restaurant industry in the Rochester area. Her last employment was for the Lassellsville School System as a bus driver, retiring in 1976.

She was very active in helping and caring for stray cats and she volunteered at the Fulton County SPCA. She was a member of Ayers Animal Shelter in Sprakers, NY.
Anna Mae is survived by dear friend and care giver, Donna Burns; four grandchildren by love, Timothy, Sheyanne, Aaron and Jason Rivenberg; foster daughter, Sandy Miller and her children, Cherished and Tony Ortez; four sisters, Sharon Attwood of Mass., Betty Clark of Mayfield, Mary Jo Grandshaw and Penny Flynn of Gloversville; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville, where a funeral service will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. R.W. William E. O'Keefe

William E. O'Keefe, 62, of County Highway 107, Johnstown, died Sunday at the home of his sister in Clifton Park, NY.

Born on April 8, 1942 in Staten Island, NY, he was the son of Michael Sr. and Anna Baranski O'Keefe. He attended local schools in Staten Island.

Mr. O'Keefe was employed as a truck driver for the New York Daily News and served as a union officer for the Newspaper Mail Delivers Union in New York City until his retirement.
Mr. O'Keefe played minor league baseball for the New York Yankee's Rookie Team in 1961 and 1962. He was also the owner of the former BilLees Tavern in Johnstown, NY.

He married Leona B. Vogel O'Keefe on March 19, 1979. She died on September 20, 1999.

Survivors include his mother, Anna O'Keefe of Staten Island, NY; two daughters, Regine Brosseau and her husband Richard of Long Island and Dorine Caswell and her husband Charles of New Hampshire; two brothers, Michael and Thomas O'Keefe, both of Staten Island; three sisters, Arlene Tysver of Florida, Kathleen Conroy of Clifton Park, NY and Patricia Disbrow of Saratoga Springs, NY; three grandchildren, Corine and Connor Brosseau and Carly Caswell; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours will be held in Staten Island on Thursday from 2 until 4 and 7 until 9 p.m. at the Casey Funeral Home Inc., 350 Slosson Ave., Staten Island, NY.

Lucille S. Olmstead

Mrs. Lucille S. Olmstead, 91, of Johnstown, died Monday, June 7, 2004 at home after being stricken.

She was born August 29, 1912, a daughter of the late Alvin and Ida Snyder. Lucille was educated in Johnstown schools and graduated from Oneonta Normal School in 1933.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Gloversville, Delta Kappa Gamma, Johnstown Historical Society, Wells House Auxiliary, Fulton County and New York State Retired Teachers Associations. Mrs. Olmstead taught school in Johnstown and vicinity for 30 years, retiring in 1971.
She married to Lloyd Olmstead June 30, 1934 and he died May 3, 1993.

Survivors include one son, Robert (Lucinda) Olmstead of Loudonville; one daughter, Linda (William) Parker of Galloway, New Jersey; grandchildren, Kelly (Jeffrey) Masline of Menands, Kimberly (Ted) Woloszyn of Glenville; great granddaughter, Emily Elizabeth Masline.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. at A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 East Main Street, Johnstown.

Friends and family may call prior to the services on Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

Interment will be in Fern Dale Cemetery, Johnstown.

Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to charity of choice.

James C. Caputo

Mr. James C. Caputo, age 66, of Woodside Ave., Gloversville, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 8, 2003 at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville.

He was born April 25, 1937 in Gloversville, the son of Patrick and Nellie Peretta Caputo. A 1955 graduate of Gloversville High School, he served in the Army National Guard from 1957 to 1960. He was employed by Townsend Leather of Johnstown until his retirement last year.

Mr. Caputo was of the Catholic faith.
He is survived by his daughter, Deborah A. Fagant and her husband Louie of Gloversville; son, James P. Caputo and his wife Doreen of Johnstown; mother, Nellie Caputo of Albany; brother, Richard Caputo and his wife Alice of Albany; sister, Linda Jarvis and her husband Robert of Loudonville.

He cherished and worshiped his two grandchildren, Stacy L. May and Adam J. Caputo. Several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a prayer service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Donald Czelusniak, pastor of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church officiating. Interment will take place at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown.

Judith A. Silk Palmer

Judith A. Silk Palmer, 63, of Wilton Commons, Gansevoort, passed away Tuesday evening at Ellis Hospital after a long illness.

Born in Amsterdam on Sept. 17, 1939, the daughter of the late William and Isabel Warfield Silk. She was educated in Amsterdam where she was employed by Mohasco and later Niagara Mohawk. She lived in Mayfield for a number of years and was the office manager for Federal Machine Co. in Johnstown. Mrs. Palmer was the co-owner of the former Stuffed Shirt Restaurant, also in Johnstown. Following retirement, she moved to Gansevoort to be closer to her son. An avid card player, she recently enjoyed knitting and crocheting.

She was a member of St. Ann's Episcopal Church in Amsterdam.
On Sept. 5, 1959, she was united in marriage to Eugene Palmer at St. Ann's. He preceded her in death on Sept. 12, 1983.

Besides her parents and husband, her twin brother, Donald Silk passed away in January.

Her son Scott and his wife Jennifer Palmer of Saratoga Springs survive as well as nieces, nephews, grandnieces, nephews and cousins.

The Office for the Burial of the Dead will be read Friday at 1:00 p.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Avenue, by the Rev. Christopher A. Smith, rector of St. Ann's Episcopal Church.

Interment will take place in Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown.

Calling hours are this evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Contributions may be made to the Amsterdam Free Library, in care of the funeral home.

William "Doc" Charles
Thursday, July 11, 2002
William "Doc" Charles, 78, of Brant Rd., Johnstown, died Wednesday, July 10, at home after being stricken.

Born April 7, 1924, in Utica, N.Y, the son of Dr. Joseph and Elizabeth Ackerbauer Charles and stepson of Mrs. Mary Charles.

He graduated from St. Mary's Institute in Amsterdam and attended Niagara University.
Mr. Charles enlisted in the U.S. Army in April of 1943 becoming a staff sergeant in the 10th Mountain Division, part of K Company in the 86th Infantry. One of only a few ski troop divisions being honorably discharged in Feb. 1946 with the rank of master sergeant and awarded the bronze star. He took part in the Battle of Reva Ridge in the Pole Valley in Northern Italy.

He was one of the founders and builders of Royal Mt. Ski area in Caroga Lake. He founded and organized the first ski patrol at Royal Mountain which he headed for 30 years. He served as ski instructor at Royal Mountain for many years.

He also served as division patrol chief of Northern N.Y. state ski area. He was awarded a life time pass to Gore Mountain for naming the show case run.

He served as section chief of the Capital District section of the National Ski Patrol and was awarded several honors by them.

After his retirement he became an avid golfer at Nick Stoner Golf Course in Caroga Lake.

He also created hand painted candles known as Northern Lights Candles.

He prayed for snow daily and skied as often as possible.

He worked as a grounds keeper for the Johnstown school system for 35 years and retired in 1986.

In 1988 Johnstown and Gloversville Central PTA awarded him the Founder's Day Award for his work with young people.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Church. He was a member of the Johnstown VFW Post and American Legion Post of Johnstown; and the 10th Mountain Division Alumni.

Survivors include four daughters, Elizabeth Dinardo of Clifton Park, Jennifer McGuire and Mary Ellen Charles, both of Bleecker, and Maureen Finocan of Gloversville; sisters, Ellen Frenzke of Johnstown and Barbara Swears of FL; brother, John Charles of Johnstown; 4 grandchildren, Benjamin and Emily McGuire and Amy and Thomas Finocan.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church, Johnstown with Rev. James Fitzmaurice, pastor, as celebrant.

Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Johnstown.

Calling hours will be Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Barter & Donnan Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Royal Mountain Ski Patrol, c/o Susan Palmer Johnson, 17 W. Main St., Johnstown, N.Y. 12095 or charity of one's choice.

Andrienne Hansen Swanker

Andrienne Hansen Swanker, 85, of Pensacola, Florida, died Tuesday, July 08, 2003.

Mrs. Swanker was born August 22, 1917 in Amsterdam, New York to George Hansen and Mary McCleary Hansen. She attended and graduated from Wilbur Lynch High School in Amsterdam, New York, then went on to attend Spencer Business Institute. Mrs. Swanker loved sailing and was an honorary member of the Mayfield Yacht Club. She worked as a secretary for many different businesses, retiring from Whiting Field in Pensacola, Florida. Mrs. Swanker was a member of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Amsterdam, New York.

Survivors include her daughter, Jahnn Gibson and husband David of Johnstown, NY and granddaughter, Rebecca Gibson of Kings Park, Long Island, NY.
Per Mrs. Swanker's wishes, she will be cremated and a private service will be held at Fairview Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 701 East Cervantes Street, Pensacola, Florida 32501. Eastern Gate Memorial Funeral Home, 1985 West Nile Mile Road, Pensacola, FL 32534 has been entrusted with arrangements.

Anthony J. Intelisano

Anthony J. Intelisano, 18, of State Highway Route 67, Amsterdam, died Sunday morning as a result of an automobile accident. Born in Gloversville, July 16, 1984, the son of Joseph Intelisano and Brenda Boucher. At the time of his death, he was employed as a roofer for Weatherguard Roofing Co. of Schenectady. Anthony attended Northville Central School where he played trumpet in the school's jazz band,; a very active member of the Omega Fitness Club of Amsterdam. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He is survived by his parents, Joseph Intelisano and Brenda Boucher, both of Amsterdam; brothers, Torey Boucher of Gloversville and Nicholas Intelisano of Amsterdam; maternal grandmother, Lelia Boucher of Gloversville and his paternal grandmother, Beverly Intelisino of Broadalbin; several aunts, uncles and cousins. He is predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Marcel Boucher and his paternal grandfather, Frank Intelisano. Friends may call today from 7-9 p.m. at the Amico Funeral Home, 150 South Main Street, where funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. Cremation will be at the Leatherstocking Crematory, Cherry Valley. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the Northville Central School Jazz Band, Northville, NY 12134.

Jeanette M. 'Janet' Sweet

Jeanette M. "Janet" Sweet, 80, of Vandenburg Point Road, Gloversville, died Wednesday evening at Nathan Littauer Hospital following a long illness.

She was born in Gloversville on September 23, 1922, a daughter of Victor and Marie Stevens Marcais and attended school in Gloversville and later in Mayfield. She was a lifelong area resident.

Mrs. Sweet was employed as a glovemaker at one time. Later, she was a meat wrapper for Acme Markets in Johnstown for several years. Mrs. Sweet was an elections inspector for Fulton County up until last year. She also enjoyed doing volunteer work for the American Heart Association.
Mrs. Sweet was a former member of St. Joseph's Church in Broadalbin. At one time, she was the bookkeeper for the late Rev. Peter Smith.

Mrs. Sweet was a member and past president of the Mayfield Servicemen's Club Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Mayfield Democratic Club and a committeeman for Fulton County.

Mrs. Sweet enjoyed crocheting and camping with her family.

She was predeceased by her siblings, Victor Marcais, Theodore "Ted" Marcais, Earl Thomas Marcais and Carolyn Marcais Guzek.

Survivors include her husband, Charles W. "Bud" Sweet, whom she married on September 13, 1945; three sons and daughters-in-law, Charles T. "Buzzy" and Katy Sweet of Gloversville, William F. "Bill" and Paula Sweet of Mineral, Va. and Roy R. "Rick" and Kuntree Sweet of Broadalbin; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 25, 2003 at 10:00 a.m at the Union Rural Cemetery, Mayfield with the Rev. R.W. Williams officiating. Cremation was performed at the Parkview Crematorium, Schenectady. There will be no calling hours. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Heart Association, in care of the funeral home.
