Irma Mae Draffen
Sunday, June 13, 2004
Irma Mae Draffen, age 86, died Saturday at her home in Northville, N.Y.

Mrs. Draffen was born on Jan. 1, 1918 in Gloversville, N.Y., the daughter of Barney and Lillian Cole Spencer. She attended Gloversville schools.

Mrs. Irma Mae Draffen was employed as a Floor Lady by the Halo Optical Co., formerly of Johnstown, for many years before retiring.
She was a member of the Northville Baptist Church. She was predeceased by her husband James A. Draffen Sr., whom she married Jan. 25, 1936 and who died August 26, 1991. She was also predeceased by several brothers and sisters; two daughters, Joan Houghtaling and her husband Scott of New Mexico, Judith McCullough and her husband Jack of Northville; a son, James A. Draffen Jr. and his wife Carol of Muskegon, Michigan; 5 brothers, Harold Spencer of Colorado, Charles Spencer of Liverpool, N.Y., Carl Spencer of Pennsylvania, George Spencer of Wells, N.Y.; one sister, Blanche Hayes of Johnstown; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

There will be a memorial service held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. from the Northville Baptist Church.

Interment will be at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Gloversville. Memorials in lieu of flowers can be made to the Mountain Valley Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville.

Florence Kimball Chase Sanges

Florence Kimball Chase Sanges, 90, of South Main Street, died Thursday evening at her home surrounded by her loving family at her side after a short illness.

Born in North Hoosick, NY Rensselaer County May 5, 1914, the daughter of John M. and Ada Kipp Chase, she moved to Gloversville in the 1930s. She was a glove worker who worked for Vincent Sanges & Sons Co., retiring in the early 1960s. A member of the Fremont Street United Methodist Church, she also enjoyed baking, gardening, painting, being a homemaker and loved her family.

On December 31, 1938, she married Ralph Sanges, who died in 2002.
She is survived by three daughters, Joan Hathaway of N. Hoosick Falls, NY, Joyce Hodge and her husband Thomas of Johnstown, and Bette Vincent and her husband Gary of Gloversville; seven grandchildren, Pamela Forrest and Steven Hathaway, both of Hoosick Falls, NY, Thomas Hodge of Northville, NY, Timothy Hathaway of N. Hoosick, NY, Michael Hathaway of Los Angeles, CA, Kevin Hodge of Brooklyn, NY, and Todd Vincent of Johnstown; four great grandchildren, Matthew and Andrew Forrest, both of Hoosick Falls, NY, and Alexandra and Nicholas Vincent, both of Gloversville.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Beverly Sanges; six sisters, Marjorie, Julia and Edna Chase, Gertrude Parmenter, Marion Betit and Marcia Peters; two brothers, Ralph and John Chase.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 15, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the Amico Funeral Home, 150 S. Main St., where the family will receive relatives and friends at 1:30 p.m.

Cremation was at the Leatherstocking Crematory, Cherry Valley, NY. Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 73 N. Main St., Gloversville, NY 12078 and Fremont Street United Methodist Church, 17 Fremont St., Gloversville, NY 12078.

Bartle "Bart" Milton Avery

Bartle Milton Avery "Bart", age 57, of Gloversville, was suddenly strickened at home and died peacefully on June 12, 2004. Born June 7, 1947, the son of Robert W. Avery and the late Audrey (McCarthy) Avery. He is stepson of Alma (Oathout) Avery.

Bart is survived by his wife Ann (Manorgan) Avery, his daughter Christine Avery Draper (Dennis) and his son Aaron Avery (Jessica). He is survived by his three grandchildren Cody Raymond and Kirsten Ann Draper and Lillian Marie Avery.

Bart is survived by his father, stepmother as well as two brothers, R. John and M. Gary Avery; and two sisters, Connie Avery of Gloversville and Gail (Avery) Holmes of Stevens, PA. He was predeceased by his brother, Lyman Robert Avery of gloversville. He is also survived by stepbrothers Jim Oathout of broadalbin, John Oathout of Mayfield and David Oathout of Canada Lake, as well as many aunts, uncles cousins, nieces and nephews in N.Y., FL, OR, WY, ID and CA.
Bart loved the Adirondacks for canoeing and swimming and spent his childhood in Arietta attending Wheelerville Elementary school and later Meco Elementary, then St. Mary's Elementary and Bishop Burke High School, where he graduated in 1964. He received a BA in history education from SUNY Albany in 1968. He did graduate studies at the University of New Mexico and Russell Sage College. Bart then volunteered as a teacher with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps at an Indian boarding school in Omak, WA in 1968. There he met his wife, Ann, also a JVC volunteer and was married August 19, 1969. The couple then taught school on the Navajo Indian Reservation in Thoreau, NM until 1980. Bart and Ann then lived in Albuquerque for three years. They moved back to Gloversville in 1984 when Bart taught history in St. Johnsville High School, then worked as a family counselor. Bart gave himself to every person he met. His generosity reached people wherever he went. He taught religious education at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel parish. He also worked in many social service organizations helping needy citizens, especially youth. He retired from social work in 1997 because of health issues.

Then he worked at Airborne Express in Albany for several years. Lately Bart has most enjoyed gardening, being with family and friends and especially spending time with his grandchildren.

Raymond R. Opalka

Mr. Raymond R. Opalka, 78, of County Highway 107, Amsterdam, NY, passed away Sunday morning at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville, NY after being stricken.

He was born April 3, 1926 in Fort Johnson, NY, a son of the late Andrew and Nellie Olbrych Opalka. He was educated locally and was a lifelong area resident.

Mr. Opalka was a sales representative for various agricultural equipment and machinery distributors for over 40 years most recently with K.C. Canary Company.
He was a member of St. Stanislaus Church. He was also a member of the Rockton Y Fish & Game Club.

He was predeceased by a son, David Opalka in 1971. He was also predeceased by his brothers Leonard, William and Alfred Opalka.

On August 24, 1946 he married the former Nellie Nowotny. In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Carol Baird, Amsterdam, NY and Patricia Eglin, Broadalbin, NY; one son, Raymond F. Opalka, Amsterdam, NY; ten grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Stanley Opalka, Perth, NY; nieces; nephews and cousins.

The funeral will be held 8:30 Wednesday morning at the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home, 200 Church Street, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 9:00 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church. Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call 5-8 Tuesday afternoon and evening. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.

Dorothy O. Weaver

Dorothy O. Weaver, 67, of Stevers Mill Road, Broadalbin, died Friday, June 11, 2004 at St. Mary's Hospital following a brief illness.

She was born in Delhi, N.Y. on January 15, 1937, a daughter of Chancy and Pheobe Lawrence Parslow and attended schools in Lake Pleasant and Wells. She had resided in Broadalbin since 1966.

Mrs. Weaver was a 1958 graduate of the Utica School of Beauty Culture. She later owned and operated the former Charm Beauty Salon in Speculator for several years. Mrs. Weaver was employed as a cloth inspector at Lee Dye Company in Johnstown for nearly 23 years, retiring in 1999.
She was an avid reader and enjoyed doing word searches. She also enjoyed traveling to county fairs with her family.

She was married to Gordon R. "Bucky" Weaver on December 3, 1966. He died on May 22, 2003. She was also predeceased by a stepdaughter, Patricia Weaver.

Survivors include a son, Keith G. Weaver and his wife Lori of Broadalbin; a stepson, Alan P. Weaver and his wife Lynne of Broadalbin; a daughter, Donna M. Pikor of Broadalbin; two brothers, Donald Parslow of Lake Pleasant and Gordon Parslow of Piseco; nine grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and her faithful feline companion, Midnight.

Cremation was performed at Parkview Crematorium, Schenectady. There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held on Monday, June 21, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at the Union Mills Cemetery with Chaplain David Pilliod, director of St. Mary's Hospital Pastoral Care, officiating. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, in care of the funeral home. Arrangements are by the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home Inc., 38 West Main St., Broadalbin.

George 'Pete' Chickering

George "Pete" Chickering, 75, of Whitesboro and Piseco Lake, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, June 10, 2004.

Pete was born on January 12, 1929 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of George and Gertrude Baez Chickering. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. On July 4, 1964 he married Judith F. Funfschilling in Speculator, New York. Peter was a salesman for Sawyer Industries in Syracuse, retiring in 1984. He was a member of the Lake Pleasant V.F.W. and Speculator Lion's Club.

Pete had an intense admiration for the North Country. He loved to ski in the winter and enjoyed boating and golfing in the summer. Piseco Lake was his home away from home.
Surviving is his wife of 39 years, Judy of Whitesboro; two children, Beth A. Chickering of Queensbury, NY and a son and daughter-in-law, David and Theresa Chickering of Marcy. George also leaves five adored grandsons, Christopher and Ryan Chickering, Daniel, Austin and Zacary Vogel; his sister, Barbara C. Coon of Brookline, New Hampshire; a niece and two nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend graveside services on Sunday, June 27, 2004 at 11 a.m. at the Higgins Bay Cemetery, Piseco, New York.

Remembrances in Pete's name may be made to Piseco Ambulance Fund, Piseco, NY 12139. Envelopes will be available at the service.

William P. Giblin
William P. Giblin, a resident of Croton since 1966, passed away on June 12, 2004. He was 70. William was born in Newark, NJ on April 2, 1934, the son of Patrick and Margaret Murray Giblin. William served in the United States Army during the Korean War Era, attaining the rank of specialist third class. On July 13, 1963 he married Elizabeth Donovan in Buffalo, NY. He retired as a supervisor for General Motors in Sleepy Hollow in 1987. Locally, William was a parishioner of Holy name of Mary Church in Croton, the Knights of Columbus, Croton Yacht Club, and the Croton Democratic Party. He was also active in the Croton Booster Club, Little League and Softball Clubs and the General Motors Junior Achievement and Scarborough Players. His wife, Elizabeth of Croton; his son, William of Chapel Hill, NC and daughters, Kathleen Ray of Wyckoff, NJ, Dr. Mary Jane Farr of NYC, NY, and Kelly Keane of Ridgewood, NJ survive William. One brother, Peter Giblin of Gloversville, NY and three sisters, Patricia Chamberlain of Croghan Lake, NY, Margaret Tomlins of Florida and Joan Bubela of Gloversville, NY also survive him. Eight grandchildren also survive William. His daughter, Geraldine Giblin who passed in 1970 and two brothers, Thomas and John Giblin predeceased him. Calling hours will be today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Edward F. Carter Funeral Home, 41 Grand St., Croton-on-Hudson, NY. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Holy Name of Mary Church. Interment will be in Bethel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Croton Booster Club, c/o Joe Steany, 9 High Street, Croton-on-Hudson, NY 10520.

Richard G. Roberts

Richard G. Roberts, 77, of Carlisle Road, Sprakers, NY, passed away Sunday evening, June 13, 2004 at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam, NY.

Born in Amsterdam, NY, January 12, 1927, he was the son of William and Edith Gray Roberts.

Mr. Roberts received his education in Tribes Hill and the Amsterdam School District. He was self-employed and the proprietor of Robert's Enterprise, a sporting goods store in Tribes Hill, NY.
Mr. Roberts was a U.S. Navy veteran of WW II from 1945 to 1947 and a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict from 1950 to 1951.

His wife, Una Marie Hoffman Roberts, to whom he was married on August 7, 1948, passed away on April 5, 2003. He was also predeceased by a grandson.

Mr. Roberts is survived by one son, John C. Roberts of Fort Johnson, NY; two daughters, Debra Williams and Edith Douglas, both of Amsterdam, NY; nine grandchildren; and twelve great grandchildren; nieces; nephews and cousins.

Cremation took place at Park View Crematorium in Schenectady, NY.

There are no calling hours.

The funeral service with full military honors will be held on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY.

Arrangements are by the Riley Mortuary Inc., 110 Division Street, Amsterdam, NY 12010.

John R. 'Jack' Stoddard
Tuesday, June 15, 2004
Mr. John R. "Jack" Stoddard, 77, of Gloversville, died Sunday following a brief illness. Born in Gloversville May 12, 1927, he was the son of the late Russell and Ruth Andrist Stoddard. He was educated in Gloversville schools and served in the Navy during World War II. Mr. Stoddard was employed in sales almost his entire life having worked several years with First Prize Foods and with John C. Miller Inc., where he fully retired in 1997 after many years as advertising manager and sales representative. Jack was past president of the Lions Club and an avid bowler and golfer. He also enjoyed many years skiing.

Survivors include his wife, Davia Schuster Stoddard of Gloversville; a daughter, Nora "Shelly" Viscosi of Gloversville; and a granddaughter, Tegan Viscosi.

He was predeceased by a son, Richard Stoddard; and a brother, Richard Stoddard. Arrangements are private at the convenience of the family, directed by the Kobuskie-Konik Funeral Home, 147 Bleecker Street, Gloversville.

Julia Hallam
Thursday, June 17, 2004
Julia Hallam, 78, of Hazlett Lane, passed away Wednesday morning at St. Mary's Hospital. She had been a resident of Mt. Loretto Nursing home for the past nine years.

Born in Lake Pleasant, NY, on March 28, 1926, one of 14 children of Spencer Fowler and Jennie Lovisa Pelcher Knapp, she moved to this area in 1951. Mrs. Hallam was employed by Ter Bush & Powell, the State Bank of Albany, Inman Manufacturing Co. and lastly as an outpatient clerk for St. Mary's Hospital before her illness.

Julia was devoted to her family and was always ready to lend a helping hand to her friends. She was a member of the Tribes Hill Presbyterian Church.
On June 30, 1951, she was united in marriage to Peter Hallam.

In addition to her husband, her loving family includes her children, Cynthia (Robert) Lennon of Amsterdam, Peter S. (Bernadette) Hallam of Slingerlands, Christopher (Lisa) Hallam of Abingdon, Md.; her grandson, Keaton Spencer Hallam of Slingerlands; her brothers, Jason Knapp of Lake Pleasant and Nelson Knapp of Scottsdale, Ariz.; her sisters, Martha Mackey of Rockville, S.C. and Elsie Nadeau of Niskayuna; her aunt, Bessie Wing of Clifton Park; and many nieces and nephews; also her special friend and sister-in-law, Joyce Bierman and her daughter, Linda and family. Julia was predeceased by her siblings, Victor, Frederick, Walter and Clarence Knapp; Shirley Thompson, Bess Dolan, Ida Goodson, Electa Garrett and Beatrice Aggen.

A graveside funeral service will take place Saturday 10:30 a.m. at Pine Grove Cemetery, Tribes Hill. The Rev. Barbara Floryshak officiating. Relatives and friends are invited. There will be no calling hours. Those who wish, may make a contribution to the Mt. Loretto Nursing Home, Swart Hill Rd., Amsterdam, 12010. The family is most grateful to the entire staff of Mt. Loretto for their kindness and care these past nine years. The arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam.

Louise Agnes Steenburgh

Louise Agnes Steenburgh, 95, passed at Montgomery Meadows Nursing Home, where she had been a resident for two weeks. Louise was born May 31, 1909 in New York City, the daughter of Josef and Aloisia Sikorovsky Skoff. She moved to Amsterdam with her family as a child. She attended Amsterdam schools and the Amsterdam School of Commerce. Louise married Charles H. Steenburgh December 29, 1935. He died in 1974.

Louise and Charles resided for many years on Pioneer St. in Harrower. In later years Louise resided at Stratton Apartments and Hillcrest Spring in Amsterdam.

In her youth she was an accomplished pianist, performing at local concerts and on radio station WGY. She continued her love for music for much of her life, as a member of the Mohawk Valley Chorus for many years, and with the Amsterdam Choraliers. She also served as accompanist for Fedorov Dance Studio.
Prior to retirement she was employed as a bookkeeper at Olender furniture, Robison & Smith and Crane-Nevins. She and her husband operated Steenburgh Florist in Harrower for many years. She was a member of Amsterdam AARP, serving as treasurer, as well as Hagaman and Tribes Hill Seniors. She also served at one time as a member of Amsterdam Public Health Committee.

Louise is survived by three loving sons, Charles J. Steenburgh and his wife Ruth Ann of Virginia Beach, VA; John "Jack" H. Steenburgh and his wife Janet of Perth and David W. Steenburgh and his wife Janet of Perth; and David Steenburgh and his wife Betty of Tribes Hill; one daughter, Mary Lou Baldwin of Amsterdam; two sisters, Elizabeth Schuttig and Kathryn Stangle Smullen, both of Amsterdam survive. Eleven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive her.

Cremation took place at Parkview Crematory, Schenectady. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. There will be no visitation. A Mass to celebrate Louise's life will take place Friday, June 18, at 9 a.m. at St. Mary's Church in Amsterdam.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Louise's memory to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 1 Marcus Blvd., Albany, NY 12205.

Arrangements are by the Riley Mortuary Inc., 110 Division Street, Amsterdam, NY 12010.

Peter E. Bennice

Mr. Peter E. Bennice, 84, of Ft. Johnson and Sun City, Arizona, formerly of Gloversville, died Wednesday following a brief illness. He was born in Gloversville on October 21, 1919, son of the late Angelo and Mary Perrella Bennice. Mr. Bennice was educated in Gloversville schools and served in the Army during WW II. He was employed by Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. as an agent for many years, retiring in 1982. Mr. Bennice also owned also owned and operated the former Bennice Clothing Store in Gloversville for some years. An avid and well-known area golfer, Mr. Bennice was a former member of Pine Brook Golf Club, Nick Stoner Golf Course, Antlers Club and Fox Run Golf Course. He had also been a former member of the Catholic War Veterans Post No. 642 in Gloversville and bowled in their league for many years. He was predeceased by his first wife, Grace Fratangelo Bennice in 1976. He subsequently married Patricia Rothermel Bennice in 1988. For many years they have wintered in Sun City, Arizona and spent summers at their home in Ft. Johnson, enjoying their family and area friends. In addition to his wife Patricia, Peter is survived by a daughter, Palma Pedrick and her husband Ron of Saratoga Springs; two sons, Peter A. Bennice and his wife Toni of Amsterdam and Richard M. Bennice and his wife Cathy of Saratoga Springs; one sister, Connie Coakley of Gloversville; and one brother, Anthony Bennice of Gloversville. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Gina Bennice, Christopher Bennice, Amy Bennice, Jennifer Marcantonio, Derek Pedrick, Jade Pedrick and Rory Pedrick; two stepdaughters, Denise Bump and Terri Mazur, both of Plano, Texas; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday 10 a.m. at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church, Gloversville with Reverend Donald Czelusniak, pastor, as celebrant.

The family will receive friends Friday 5-8 p.m. at the Kobuskie-Konik Funeral Home, 147 Bleecker Street, Gloversville. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown. Expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to Hospice of Amsterdam, 246 Manny's Corners Road, Amsterdam, NY 12010 or to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Rd., Loudonville, NY 12211.

Loduskie Sherman
Friday, June 18, 2004
Loduskie Sherman, 96, of Stevers Mill Road, died Wednesday evening, June 16, 2004 at Nathan Littauer Hospital after being stricken at home.

She was born in Cobleskill on February 7, 1908, a daughter of Melvin and Myrtle Markle Van Der Veer and was educated in Charleston-Four-Corners. Mrs. Sherman was a lifelong area resident and had lived in Broadalbin for the past 18 years.

She was married to Archie Sherman on December 23, 1927. He died on February 12, 1989.
Survivors include two sons, Donald A. Sherman of Charlton and Richard F. Sherman of Broadalbin; a daughter, Myrtle E. Tolson of Broadalbin; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Cremation will be performed at Parkview Crematorium, Schenectady. There will be no calling hours. Burial of the remains will take place at the convenience of the family at the Barkersville Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to a charity of one's choice in care of the funeral home. Arrangements are by the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home Inc., 38 West Main Street, Broadalbin.

Clarence 'Cookie' Cook

Clarence "Cookie" Cook, 89, of Sebring, Florida, died June 9, 2004 in Lake Placid, FL. Born in Cranberry Creek, NY, the son of Charles and Lulu Geelan Cook, he and his wife Esther moved to Sebring in February 1999.

"Cookie" was formerly employed by the American Locomotive Company in Schenectady, NY and also owned his own business as a logger. After that, he was a fixture for many years on the corner of Route 30A and S. Kingsboro Avenue, selling produce and pumpkins and carried the nickname "The Pumpkin Man."

Mr. and Mrs. Cook were foster parents for over 40 years and were recognized for their contributions on many occasions.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Esther; and sons, Donald and Angie (Mirnoli) Cook of North Port, FL, Steven and Lynn Cook of Shrewsbury, MA, Scott Cook of Lorida, FL; daughters, Beverly (Gordon) Kilts of Glens Falls, NY, Sharon (James E.) Handy of Gloversville, NY, Susan (Richard) Crannel of Minnetto, NY and Sandra and Marcy Cook, both of Sebring, FL.

Sisters, Edith Monroe, Edna Wilson, Roxanne Cook, Elizabeth Fisher; and brothers, Raymond, Leland and Franklin predeceased him.

A prayer service, along with family remembrances, was held at the Morris Funeral Home in Sebring. The Rev. Dale Schanley officiated. Mrs. Schanley played appropriate selections, including "Amazing Grace."

A memorial service for family and friends will be held at a later date in Gloversville. Local arrangements are by Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, Gloversville.

Eoo Stergas

Eoo Stergas, 93, of Johnstown, NY died Thursday, June 17, 2004 at her residence. Born on March 1, 1911 in North Bergen, NJ, she graduated from State University College at Oneonta, NY. Eoo taught in multigrade, one-room schools for six years, and then assisted her husband, Blasco Stergas, in the poultry business of Stergas Poultry Farms in Johnstown until his death in 1987. Eoo requested no public visitations.

William B. Gormley

William B. Gormley, 51, of Amsterdam Ave., Rotterdam, died Saturday, June 19, 2004, at home. He was born March 18, 1953, in Amsterdam. He was a lifelong area resident.

He was a golf pro working at the Sacandaga Golf Club in Northville for several years. He was a member of the PGA.

His parents are William T. and Dorothy Kardoc Gormley.
Survivors include two sons, Shane Patrick Gormley and Cavan Baxter Gormley, both of Glenville; nephew of Robert Gormley of Niskayuna and Helen Meyers of Clifton Park. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held 10 o'clock Friday, July 2, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 52 Sacandaga Road, Scotia. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be in Florida. In lieu of flowers, it has been requested that memorials in Bill's name be made to the American Heart Assoc., 440 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12205. Arrangements have been entrusted to the White Funeral Home, 264 N. Ballston Ave. (Route 50), Scotia.

Ruth Ann O'Connor

Mrs. Ruth Ann O'Connor, 57, of Selkirk, passed from this life June 18, 2004, at Albany Medical Center Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Gloversville, N.Y., October 30, 1946, daughter of Concetta Ruberti Scoville and the late Almond Sanford Scoville. She was a graduate of Gloversville High School and Marcy State Nursing School. As a registered nurse, Ruth worked at several hospitals during her career, including Stratton VA Hospital in Albany, Memorial Hospital in El Paso, Texas, and Community General Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y. She was also employed by Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Delmar and Resurrection Nursing Home in Castleton, N.Y. She ended her career as a school nurse at Glenmont Jobcorps in Glenmont, N.Y. This career spanned 35 years, interrupted twice to raise her children.

She is survived by her husband, Richard M. O'Connor of Selkirk; a son, Chad Jason O'Connor, and a daughter, Shannon Rory O'Connor, both of Selkirk; her mother, Concetta Ruberti Scoville of Mt. Loretto Nursing Home, Amsterdam; a sister, Carol Colavito of Port Jervis, N.Y.; a nephew, Ron Colavito and his wife, Tara of Matamoras, Pa.; a niece, Connie Colavito of Brooklyn, N.Y.; several cousins and numerous nieces and nephews from her husband's side of the family.

The family wishes to thank the staff of NYOH in Latham, N.Y.; the loving staff at 4DE of Albany Medical Center; the caring staff at 6A of Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, Mass., and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute for all they did to make Ruth's life as full as possible.
A prayer service will be held Wednesday at 10:15 a.m. from the Kobuskie-Konik Funeral Home, 147 Bleecker Street, Gloversville, and at 11 a.m. a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church, Gloversville, with Reverend Donald Czelusniak, pastor, as celebrant. The family will receive friends Tuesday 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown. Expressions of sympathy in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Rd., Loudonville, N.Y. 12211.

Jay T. Blunk

Jay T. Blunk, 98, of Ft. Johnson, formerly of Prindle Avenue, Johnstown, died Saturday, June 1, 2002, after a long illness.

He was born Jan. 15, 1904 in Hales Mills, the son of John and Belle Evelyn Kelly Blunk. He attended Johnstown Schools. He was employed as a Freight and Passenger agent for 47 years for the former F&G Railroad. He retired in 1969.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Church, Johnstown. He was a life member of the Johnstown Council Knights of Columbus No. 239, former member of the Johnstown Citizen's Band. He also served as business manager and treasurer for the Johnstown Zoning Board.
He married Marguerite Kennedy on Sept. 5, 1931. She died Nov. 25, 1988.

He is survived by a niece, Geraldine Moldt of Johnstown.

Calling hours are Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church, Johnstown, with the Rev. James Fitzmaurice, pastor, as celebrant.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Patrick's Church Memorial Fund.
