Eugene E. Carr

Eugene E. Carr, 78, of Broad Street, Gloversville, passed away on Saturday, February 1, 2003 at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville after a short illness. He was born August 12, 1924 in Gloversville, the son of Harry B. and Catherine McCormack Carr. He was a 1942 graduate of Gloversville High School and a World War II Navy veteran. He was employed as a leather worker by G. Levor and Co. Inc., of Gloversville and later by the Gloversville Embossing Co. Inc., retiring in 1980. Mr. Carr was a member of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church in Gloversville. He is survived by his wife, the former Frances Nicosia, whom he married on Sept. 10, 1944, one son, Timothy G. Carr of Benicia, Calif.; one brother, John Carr of Peoria, Ill.; four sisters, Faith Knight of Danville, Ill.; Hope Ruller, Mary Carr and Patricia Nellis of Gloversville; seven grandchildren, Lisha Leivore of Benicia, Calif.; Jennifer Kapp, of Atlanta, Ga.; Jacqueline Todd, of Fort Worth, TX.; Jessica Todd, of New Orleans, La.; Gillian Todd, of Atlanta, Ga; Frances Carr of Fairplay, Colo.; Chris Carr of Glens Falls, N.Y.; three great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by one son, Glen Carr, and one daughter, Catherine Todd; two brothers, Richard and Donald Carr; and one sister, Irene Mulhall.

Nova Paige Simpson

Nova Paige Simpson, infant daughter of Rik and Kim Yoder Simpson, of Herrick Road, Braman Corners, passed away suddenly on Jan. 31, 2003. Nova is survived by her loving family - her brother, Christopher Hutchins; her sister, Kelly Hutchins; her paternal grandparents, Robert and Donna Simpson of Knox; her maternal grandparents, Alyce Yoder of Canajoharie and the late Robert Yoder. Calling hours will be Monday from 6-8 p.m. at the White-Van Buren Funeral Home, 1779 Main St., Delanson. A funeral service will follow at 8 p.m.

Rosemary A. Richardson

Rosemary A. Richardson, 49, of West Bush Rd., died Saturday at her residence after losing a courageous battle to cancer. She was born December 4, 1955 in Gloversville, daughter of Phyllis Flansburg Richardson Holland and the late George Richardson Jr. She was educated in Gloversville schools and received her certified nursing assistant training at FMCC. Early in her life, she was employed at the former Diana Knitting, Ava Leather and Coleco Industries. For the past seven years, she had been employed at the Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility, were she was voted CNA of the year in 2003 by her co-workers. Rosemary was also a member of the Bleecker Fish & Game Club. In addition to her mother of Gloversville, she is survived by a daughter, Nita Lee Calhoun Kemmer and her husband, Stephen of Gloversville; two sisters, Susan Gannon of Gloversville and Darlene Richardson of N. Ft. Myers, Fla.; two half-sisters, Holly Holland Barker of Gloversville and Heidi Holland of N. Ft. Myers, Fla.; a stepsister, Patricia Crankshaw of Amsterdam; four brothers, George Richardson III, Roger Richardson, Vernon Richardson and his wife Lynn and Robert Richardson Sr., all of N. Ft. Myers, Fla.; two grandchildren, Kassidy Rose and Shianna Renee Kemmer of Gloversville. Rosemary is also survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; her best friend and companion of 12 years, Susan Hayes of Gloversville. She was a special aunt to Dominique Richardson. She was predeceased by a brother, Glenn A. Richardson.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday 10 a.m. from the Kobuskie-Konik Funeral Home, 147 Bleecker Street, Gloversville with Reverend Christopher Hamm and Reverend R.W. Williams officiating.

The family will receive friends Tuesday 5-8 p.m. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda.

Rida W. Van Derwerken

Rida W. Van Derwerken, 94, of Lake Park, Georgia and a former Johnstown resident, passed away Feb. 18 after a brief illness. Mrs. Van Derwerken was born April 15, 1908, the daughter of Irvin E. and Alice Kinaman Wessell. She graduated from Johnstown High School in 1927. On Sept. 5, 1931, she married John Henry Van Derwerken at the Johnstown Reformed Church. He passed away in 1987.

Mrs. Van Derwerken was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She had a strong interest in both education and children. She served on the administration board of the Girl Scouts for many years and was a member of the Johnstown Board of Education for 10 years during the 1950s. She worked closely with the Red Cross during WWII. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ft. Myers, Fla. and also attended Lake Park United Methodist Church in Lake Park, Ga. She was also a member of St. Monica Chapter No. 486 OES.

Mrs. Van Derwerken is survived by two daughters, Joan V. Kumpitsch of Johnstown, N.Y. and Alice V. Baker of Lake Park, Ga. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Louise Campbell Mongoven, Scott Patterson, Jonna Lee Patterson, Robert John Kumpitsch, Richard Carl Kumpitsch and five great-grandchildren, Kelly, Jacob and Joshua Mongoven and Alec and Catarina Kumpitsch.
Friends may call 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Ehle Funeral Home. Friends are invited to attend a graveside service at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda, N.Y. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of choice.

Lesley Jean Conover

Lesley Jean Conover died on Friday, January 28, 2005 in Hendersonville, North Carolina. She was the daughter of William Conover of 411 South First Street, Northville and the late Elizabeth Conover Cardinal and the stepdaughter of Alice R. Conover.

Lesley Jean was born on September 9, 1952 in Summit, New Jersey. She attended Northville High School. She was a graduate of Bartram School in Jacksonville, Florida, Elmira College in Elmira, New York, Columbia University in New York City, and the University of North Carolina at Asheville, North Carolina.

Lesley was a beloved daughter, sister, sister-in-law and aunt. Her loving concern for her nieces and nephews was exceptionally unstinting and will always be remembered. In addition to Mr. and Mrs. William Conover, she leaves a brother, Clifford Conover (Susan) of Liverpool, NY; two sisters, Deanna Conover Lawatsch (Frank) of Montclair, N.J. and Carol Conover Throop (James) of Newfield, NY; nine nephews and nieces, along with their spouses and four grand nieces.
Lesley was passionate about opera, books, the New York Mets and "easy" gardening and had a heart for special education children. She was pursuing a new career as a special education teacher at the time of her death.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. March 19, 2005 at the Baptist Church of Northville.

Darlene Marie Yates

Darlene Marie Yates, 53, of London Bridge Rd., Caroga Lake, died Thursday, Feb. 26, at home surrounded by her family and friends after a long illness.

Born April 28, 1950 in Gloversville, the daughter of Kenneth and Gladys Loucks Hayes. She graduated from Caroga Lake High School. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of the North Bush United Methodist Church. She had a great love for animals and she took pride in raising her family.
She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Brian Yates of Caroga Lake; three daughters, Pamela Murry of Gloversville, Sondra Yates DeThomasis of Caroga Lake, Bry-Ann Yates of Albany; two brothers, Kenneth Hayes of Florida and Alan Hayes of Schenectady; three grandchildren, Alex, Cameron and Vincent. She is also survived by her mother, Gladys Yearyean.

A Mass of Christian burial will be on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, 1 N. Melcher St., Johnstown. The Rev. R.W. Williams, chaplain of Mt. Valley Hospice, will be celebrant. Cremation will be in Parkview Crematory, Schenectady. Calling hours will be Saturday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or James Brennan Humane Society, 437 Nine Mile Tree Rd., Gloversville, NY 12078.

Joann J. Day

Joann J. Day, 45, of Four Wheel Drive Road, Mayfield, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003 at home following a long illness. She was born July 24, 1957 in Corinth, the daughter of Lewis and Dora Stone Jenkins.

She was a graduate of Hadley Luzerne Central School and was employed by the Fulton County Sheriff's Department as a dispatcher.

Joann was a member of the Mayfield Fire Department and was a first responder and EMT.
Survivors include her husband, Jack Day, whom she married Jan. 21, 1983; her father, Lewis Jenkins of Hadley, N.Y.; daughters, Jessica Sinon and her financeŽ David Yager of Clebourne, Texas, Angela and Jenny Day, both of Mayfield; and her stepdaughter, Laura David of Clyde, N.Y.; three brothers, Joel Jenkins of Corinth, N.Y., John Jenkins of Turner, Maine, and Jim Jenkins of Hadley, N.Y.; one sister, Judy Frasier of Mayfield; three step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive her. She was predeceased by her son, Rexford Phenes Jr.

Friends may call today from 2 - 5 p.m. at the Northville Funeral Home, where a service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 10 Burial will be held in Lynwood Cemetery in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mayfield Volunteer Fire Department or Mountain Valley Hospice.

Katherine M. Quackenbush

Katherine M. Quackenbush, age 60, of Gloversville, died Friday at the Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, NY. Born May 5, 1943 in Ilion, NY, she was the daughter of John and Hazel Paquette Downs. She attended Little Falls schools and lived in the Gloversville area for the past three years.

She was predeceased by her husband, Lyle Quackenbush, whom she married February 16, 1960. He died July 19, 1996. She was also predeceased by a daughter, Cynthia A. March.

She is survived by two sons, Roger Quackenbush and his wife, Tammy of Little Falls and Lyle G. Quackenbush of Gloversville; four daughters, Sheila Wardroff and her husband, Randy of Greenville, TN, Linda Herring and her husband, William of New Port, Tenn., Deborah Boyce and her husband, Daryl of Virginia and Patricia Quackenbush of Gloversville; three brothers, Adrian Downs of Herkimer, James Downs of Ilion, NY and John Downs of Virginia; four sisters, Esther Decker of Frankfurt, NY, Julia Congdon of Ilion, NY, Mabel Currie of Ilion, NY and Gladys Talcott of Rome, NY; many grandchildren; several great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
The family will be receiving friends on today from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville, where a funeral service will directly follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. R.W. Williams officiating. Interment in Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown, NY. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Assn.

Donald W. Van Deusen Jr.

Mr. Donald W. Van Deusen Jr., age 61, of Franklin St., Gloversville, died Saturday evening, February 28, 2004 at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville.

He was born January 9, 1943 in Amsterdam, the son of Donald W. Sr. and F. Anna Van Heusen Van Deusen. A graduate of Wilbur Lynch High School in Amsterdam, he resided in the Montgomery and Fulton counties all of his life. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Mr. Van Deusen was employed for many years by Sonoco Products of Amsterdam. He was of the Methodist faith.
He is survived by four children, Donald W. Van Deusen III and his wife Mary Katherine of Johnstown; Renate L. Van Nostrand and her husband, Brian of Mayfield, Christina Van Deusen of Binghamton and Allen Paul Van Deusen of Florida; three brothers, Dana Van Deusen of Gloversville, Albert Van Deusen and his wife, Noreen and Charles Van Deusen and his wife, Patty, all of Galway; four grandchildren, Brian Van Nostrand, Cassandra Van Nostrand, Fahren Van Deusen and Zachary Van Deusen; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his wife, the former Anita Weidemann; and by another brother, David Van Deusen.

The family will receive from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Wayne E. Jones Sr. officiating. Interment will take place in the spring at Hagaman Cemetery, Hagaman. Lucille (Jagel) Schulte

SUN CITY, Fla. - Lucille (Jagel) Schulte, 88, quietly passed away March 11, 2004.

Her beloved husband, Paul Schulte, preceded her in death. A former employee of the City of New York, she lived on Staten Island, retired to Edinburg, N.Y. and died close to family in Sun City Center.

She was a member of Northville Presbyterian Church and attended Presbyterian Church of Seffner. She is survived by two loving children, daughter, Lorraine Schulte Barry [husband Bill], and son, Carl Schulte [wife Kristine].
Also surviving are six grandchildren: Christopher, Aaron and Margarete Schulte; Erika Barry; David Barry [wife Jennie]; and Eileen Hale [husband Jim]; plus three great-grandchildren: Kyle Barry, Gabriella Barry, and Eileah Hale.

Those she leaves behind deeply feel her loss but know that heaven has been enriched by her presence.

Marion Dean Jones

Mrs. Marion Dean Jones, 83, formerly of Gloversville, died Friday, March 26, 2004 at Huntington Place, Rockledge, FL.

Mrs. Jones was born on April 18, 1920 in Gloversville, the daughter of Marion and Anna Fox Dean. She was a seamstress, employed by the N.A. Taylor Corp., Gloversville.

She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Florida.
Mrs. Jones was married August 30, 1947 to Martin C. Jones Sr., who died November 8, 1988.

She is survived by two sons, Mark C. Jones and wife, Anna and Martin C. Jones III, both of Rockledge, FL; nine grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 9 until 10 a.m. Wednesday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a funeral service will follow at 10:00 a.m. with the Rev. Robert W. Busch officiating. Interment will take place at FernDale Cemetery, Johnstown.

Gordon L. Purdy

Gordon L. Purdy, 89, former director of Camp-of-the-Woods in Speculator, NY, died Sunday, March 21, 2004. He wintered for years in West Melbourne.

Born in a baker's family in Belmont, Ontario, Canada, January 2, 1915, Gordon came to the USA in 1933 to join the Camp-of-the-Woods summer staff. He never left. That summer Gordon surrendered his heart to Jesus Christ, which changed the course of his life and eternity. He soon became understudy and assistant to founder George F. "Pop" Tibbitts in operating Camp-of-the-Woods. In 1938 he met Ann Rask of Springfield, MA and they married in September 1939.

During his long life, Gordon served as camp director from 1948-1986 overseeing expansive growth in the camp's development and ministry including an extensive missions program. He served as board chairman of Gospel Volunteers Inc. and also on numerous other mission and business boards. He was a pioneer organizer of Christian Camping International and helped to launch Christian youth camps in Hong Kong and South Africa. His passion was serving Christ at Camp-of-the-Woods with excellence.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ann; son, Don (Joann) of Speculator, NY; daughter, Carolyn Schoen (Doug) of Brookfield, WI; sons Rich (Joan) of Downingtown, PA and Bob (Kathryn) of Fort Wayne, IN; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Gracey Purdy of Aylmer, ON, Canada.

A life celebration service will be held June 5, at a location to be determined in New York state. No flowers please. Memorial gifts may be made designated to Missions Fund/Gospel Volunteers Inc. at Camp-of-the-Woods or to Speculator Ambulance Corps, both in Speculator, NY 12164.

Daniel P. Syzdek Sr.

Daniel P. Syzdek Sr., 68, of North Second Avenue, Broadalbin, died Sunday evening at St. Mary's Hospital. Born on June 10, 1935 in Amsterdam, he was the son of Joseph J. and Lillian Graff Syzdek. He was a 1953 graduate of the Wilbur H. Lynch High School and was a lifelong area resident.

He was at one time employed by Norgas Propane Company in Johnstown and later as an auxiliary policeman for the Johnstown Police Department.

Mr. Syzdek was a Korean Era Army veteran.
He was a member of the Church of Saint John the Baptist. He was also a member of the American Legion John J. Wyszomirski Post 701 and the National Rifle Association. He also enjoyed fishing and woodworking.

He was married to Constance A. St. Louis Syzdek on January 20, 1957. She died on August 11, 1983.

Mr. Syzdek is survived by five sons, Brett P. St. Louis (Penny) of Shields Road, Edinburg, Joseph H. Syzdek (Brenda) of Gloversville, Daniel P. Syzdek Jr. of Amsterdam, USN AO2 AW Jerry D. Syzdek and his financeŽe Sharron of Virginia, Dayton L. Syzdek (Rose) of Canajoharie; one daughter, Claudia M. Robillard (Peter) of Broadalbin; his stepmother, Roxie Syzdek of Amsterdam; one brother, Robert Syzdek of Amsterdam; 20 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Guzielek-Pomykaj Funeral Home, 13 Belmont Place, followed at 11:00 a.m. by a Mass of Christian burial at the Church of Saint John the Baptist. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery with military honors. Calling hours will be Wednesday morning prior to the service from 8:30 until 10:30 a.m. The American Legion Post 701 will conduct a service at 9:00 a.m. At the family's request, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Syzdek's memory to the Church of Saint John the Baptist or to the Syzdek Family, c/o the Guzielek-Pomykaj Funeral Home, 13 Belmont Place, Amsterdam, NY 12010. A reception will be held at the American Legion Post 701 immediately following the services at the cemetery.

Eric Duemler

Eric Duemler, 79, of Bonita Springs, FL and Fultonville, NY, died March 28, 2003.

Mr. Duemler was a veteran of WW II serving in the US Army. He was also a member of the H.E.T. Club, a club interested in old Hudson autos.

Survivors include his loving wife of 26 years, Marie M. Duemler of Bonita Springs, FL; son, Robert (Judith) Duemler of Perth, NY; daughter, Carole (Fred) Dandino of Scotia, NY; step-daughters, Kim (George) Ciezkowski of Duanesburg, NY and Chris (Klaus) Schneider of Wrenthan, MA; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A sister, Laura Hojny, preceded him in death.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 3, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. James City Recreation Center, Bonita Springs, FL, where a reception will follow.

Antoinette P. (nee Pisani) Kielblock

Antoinette P. (nee Pisani) Kielblock, age 89, died suddenly on Saturday, March 29, 2003 at her son's home in Asbury, NJ.

Born in Manhattan, NY to the late Frank and Rose Bianca Pisani, Antoinette lived most of her life in North Plainfield before residing in Northville with her daughter two years ago.

Antoinette worked as a drapery seamstress for Huffman-Koos in Rahway and Fabric Land in North Plainfield, before retiring from Charles Lecher Inc. in Scotch Plains in 1993. She was a communicant of St. Joseph R.C. Church in North Plainfield, a member of their Rosary Altar Society and their Catholic Women's Club. She also was a member of the Muhlenberg Hospital Auxiliary called TWIG. Antoinette was an avid reader who enjoyed baking. But her real pastime was knitting and crocheting for her friends and family.
She is predeceased by her husband, Henry W. Kielblock in 1968. She is survived by her son, Henry F. Kielblock and his wife Lenore of Asbury; her daughter, Ruth K. Drake and her husband Garrett Jr. of Northville, NY; four grandchildren, Henry J. Kielblock, Elizabeth K. Holdren, Garrett Drake III and Jennifer D. Berg; one great-granddaughter, Sarah Berg.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday, April 1, at 9 a.m. from the Higgins Home for Funerals, 461 Somerset Street, North Plainfield followed by a 10 a.m. funeral Mass at St. Joseph R.C. Church, North Plainfield. Interment, Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield. Visitation Monday, March 31, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the funeral home.

Francis McCauley

Francis McCauley, 84, of East State Street, Gloversville, died Saturday, March 29, 2003 at the Nathan Littauer Hospital. He was born May 3, 1918 in Brooklyn. The son of the late Francis and Edna Herrle McCauley.

Francis attended Public School No. 32 in Queens County and was a self-educated man.

He had been a resident of the area since 1974 and had worked at the Sheltered Workshop for Lexington Center.
Survivors include two sisters, Georgia Verity of Edinburg, NY and Edna Wilson of California; two nephews, Frank Verity of Edinburg, NY and Leon Verity Jr. of Galway, NY; two nieces, Patricia Jensen and Georgia LaPort, both of Edinburg, NY. Several great nieces and great nephews also survive him.

Friends may call Monday, March 31, 2003 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Northville Funeral Service, 401 Bridge Street, Northville. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Tuesday, April 1, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church of Northville with Father Robert Powhida as celebrant. Burial will be in Edinburg Cemetery in the spring.

Morris L. Van Slyke

Morris L. Van Slyke, 79, of 16 John St., Amsterdam, NY, died Friday, March 28, 2003 at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, following a long illness.

He was born July 29, 1923 in Trenton, NJ, the son of Albert and Ella Mercer Van Slyke. He had resided most of his life in Gloversville, also in Tampa, Florida for 12 years and last in Amsterdam the past year.

Mr. Van Slyke served in the Army during World War II in South Africa where he became totally disabled. Prior to the war he was a logger at Avery's Logging in Arietta, and later was a landscaper in the Lake George area.
He was a member of the former St. Mary's Church, Gloversville.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia L. Hill Van Slyke of Amsterdam, whom he married January 14, 1974. Also surviving are nine children, Brandi L. Van Slyke, Monique E. White and her husband Darrell, all of Amsterdam, Dawn Van Slyke, Marcus Scott Van Slyke, Anthony Van Slyke and his wife, Cassandra, Christopher Van Slyke and his wife Carena and John Marra and his wife Helen, all of Tampa, FL; Marcus Edward Van Slyke of Gloversville and Jeffrey Doorval of Alexandria, VA; a brother, Albert E. Van Slyke III of Amsterdam; a stepson, John Kennedy and his wife Mary of Warrensburg; a sister-in-law, Shirley Burt and her husband James of Saratoga Springs; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a son, Morris Van Slyke Jr. and a brother, William T. Van Slyke.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a prayer service will be held 10:00 Wednesday with the Rev. Donald Czelusniak, pastor of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church officiating. Interment will take place at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 440 New Karner Rd., Albany, NY 12205.

Gerald 'Gerry' P. Veeder

Mr. Gerald "Gerry" P. Veeder, 54, of First Avenue, Gloversville, died early Sunday morning at Nathan Littauer in Gloversville.

Born on October 19, 1948 in Amsterdam, he was the son of Howard S. and Grace M. Ellis Veeder. He was a lifelong area resident and a 1966 graduate of Fonda-Fultonville High School. In 1995 he went on to graduate from Fulton-Montgomery Community College with an associate's degree in psychology.

During the Vietnam War, Mr. Veeder served in the United States Air Force.
Mr. Veeder was employed by Ruby & Quiri in Gloversville for many years as well as a house manager for Fulton Friendship House in Gloversville.

He was a past member of the Glen Volunteer Fire Department.

Mr. Veeder loved spending time with his grandchildren. He enjoyed playing golf at Nick Stoner Golf Course and was an avid fisherman.

He was predeceased by a brother, Joseph P. Veeder.

Survivors include a son, Aaron J. Veeder of Amsterdam; a daughter, Monica L. Fox of Fonda; four brothers, George W. Veeder of Cazenovia, NY, Jon S. Veeder of Eva, NY, Bruce A. Veeder and Brian E. Veeder, both of Gloversville; three sisters, Harriette M. Stack and Ruth E. Yates, both of Gloversville and Rebecca A. Carr of Logansport, Indiana; four grandchildren, Rebecca A. Fox, Joseph M. Fox, Desirae M. Diaz and Amber M. Fox; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St., Fultonville with the Rev. Dr. George M. Garin Jr., officiating. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Nelson C. Darling Sr.

Nelson C. Darling Sr., 90 years of age, of Route 2, Cropseyville, died suddenly Monday at St. Mary's Hospital in Troy. Born in Watervliet, he was the son of the late Harry S. and Isabell Nelson Darling. He attended Watervliet Elementary School No. 3 and graduated from Troy Country Day School in 1932, where he played varsity football, basketball and baseball. He was elected to All Capital District Football and Baseball teams.

Mr. Darling married the former Alice Feathers and moved to Moline, Illinois, where he worked as a welder after completing his apprenticeship. He later returned to Grafton, NY, working on construction projects, locally and in Massachusetts, New Jersey and Vermont. He opened a welding and construction business in Cropseyville, NY, and continued his education by completing a course in metallurgy at RPI. He served as a welder instructor at Hudson Valley Community College and the USN Reserve, Troy, NY. Mr. Darling was a dealer for Inland Steel Building and furnished the steel and erected several churches for the Albany Catholic Diocese and constructed several warehouses and bowling alleys in New York and Massachusetts.

Mr. Darling retired from the U.S. Navy as a master chief petty officer in 1973, after 23 years of service. During this time, his tours of duty included Davisville, RI, Puerto Rico, Virginia, Port Hueneme, California, Japan, Vietnam (three tours), and South Weymouth, MA. During his Navy and government service, he received commendation from the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force, receiving the following military medals: Bronze Star, American Defense Medal, Meritorious Service Award for Vietnam, five Good Conduct medals, Navy Marine Combat Medal, Vietnam Medal, five Battle Star Medals and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal. He was a member of the Navy Golf and Ski teams while stationed at Davisville, RI.
Mr. Darling also worked 10 years for the federal government, retiring on June 30, 1978 in Langley, VA. Following his retirement, he and his wife moved to Homestead, Florida until 1992, when Hurricane Andrew destroyed their home. At that time, they returned to their summer home in Cropseyville.

Mr. Darling was a member of Fleet Reserve Assoc. MAL, the Brunswick Elks No. 2556, American Legion Post 1489 of Wyantskill and VFW Post 6340 of Grafton.

He is survived by his wife, Alice Feathers Darling of Cropseyville; six children and their spouses, Nelson (Janice) Darling Jr. of Grafton, Robert (Diana) Darling of Gloversville, Diane (Terry) Perkins of Stillwater, Ray (Carole) Darling of Slingerlands, John (Julie) Darling of Grafton and William (Barbara) Darling of Brunswick. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren, Nelson Darling III, James Darling, David Darling, Suzanne Darling, Thomas Darling, Nancy Bradley, Linda Coonrad, Theodore Darling Jr., Steven Perkins, Rae Brown, Ray Darling Jr., Scott Darling, Kathleen Benoit, Jennifer Hess, John Darling Jr., Kierstin Darling, William Darling Jr. and Joseph Darling. He is also survived by 31 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Theodore Darling; and a grandson, Robert Darling Jr.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday morning at 10 o'clock April 3, 2004 at the Morris - Stebbins - Miner & Sanvidge Funeral Home, 312 Hoosick Street, Troy, NY 12180 with the Rev. William O'Dell, Pastor of the Grafton Baptist Church, officiating.

The interment will be in Eagle Mills Cemetery, Eagle Mills, NY.

Friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Friday afternoon and evening from 4 to 8 p.m.
