Anthony Pompilio

July 9, 1996
Anthony Pompilio, 84, of Day Road, Rotterdam, formerly of Schenectady, died Tuesday at St. Clare's Hospital after a short illness.

Born in Schenectady, Mr. Pompilio was a lifelong area resident.

For 33 years, he served with the Schenectady Fire Department, retiring as a lieutenant in 1974.

Mr. Pompilio was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

He also was a member of the Retired Permanent Firefighters of Schenectady and a social member of the Carman Volunteer Fire Department, District 3.

His wife, Jean D'Ambrosio Pompilio, died in 1985.

Survivors include a daughter, Roslyn Warlik of Rotterdam; a brother, Ralph Romano of Tribes Hill ; three sisters, Angeline Terrenzio and Frances Greco, both of Schenectady, and Antoinette Jones of Fonda; and two grandsons.

Services will be held at 8:30 a.m. Friday at the DeLegge Funeral Home, 1346 Chrisler Ave., and at 9 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, where a Mass will be celebrated.

Entombment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Mausoleum, Colonie.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church's restoration fund.

Bernice Bills

July 10, 1996
Mrs. Bernice Bills, 86, of Walcott, formerly of Gloversville, died Wednesday at Wayne County Nursing Home, Lyon.

Born in Atlanta, Steuben County, and a graduate of the former Oneonta Normal School, Mrs. Bills lived in Gloversville most of her life, moving to Walcott in 1975.

She was a teacher at the former Westbush School in Fulton County and taught elementary and special education in Meco and Gloversville. Mrs. Bills retired several years ago.

Mrs. Bills was a former member of the Gloversville Free Methodist Church and served as secretary of the board and was a longtime conference delegate. She also was a member, organist and taught Sunday School at the North Rose Methodist Church.

Her first husband, Wilbur Dodge, died in 1973.

Survivors include her husband, George Bills; a daughter, Fran Herrick of Auburn; two grandsons; and a great-granddaughter.

A service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Kobuskie-Konik Funeral Home, 147 Bleecker St., where calling hours will begin at 11 a.m.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Geraldine Field

July 8, 1996
Mrs. L. Geraldine Field, 87, of LeMoyne Avenue, Syracuse, formerly of Gloversville, died Monday morning at St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse.

Mrs. Field was born in Gloversville and attended the former St. Francis School.

She had resided in Syracuse for the past seven years.

For 25 years, Mrs. Field was a glove worker at Grandoe Glove Corporation.

She was a communicant of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church.

Her first husband, William R. Cole, whom she married on Jan. 23, 1926, died in 1945. She was also the widow of Kenneth Field.

Survivors include two daughters, Audrey J. Christofferson and Mary T. Yablonski, both of Liverpool, Onondaga County, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at the John W. Finocan Funeral Home, 13 Prospect Ave., and at 9:30 at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Johnstown.

Memorial contributions may be made to the James A. Brennan Memorial Humane Society, 437 Nine Mile Tree Road, Gloversville, 12078.

Joseph Quill Jr.

July 9, 1996
Joseph Stephen Quill Jr., infant son of Joseph S. Quill Sr., and Kristel Pierce of Amsterdam, died Tuesday at birth at St. Mary's Hospital.

In addition to his parents, survivors include his maternal grandparents, Mark and Zellmira Doesburg and Thomas Pierce, all of Amsterdam; his paternal grandparents, William and Linda Lampkin of Amsterdam, and Stephen Quill, also of Amsterdam.

Services were held today at Fairview Cemetery, Amsterdam.

Arrangements are by the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place.

Kenneth Benton

July 9, 1996
Kenneth N. Benton, 89, of Persh Road, Bleecker, died Wednesday at Nathan Littauer Hospital Nursing Facility, Gloversville, after a long illness.

Born in Canajoharie, Mr. Benton lived in Bleecker most of his life.

He was head of maintenance at Continental Mills in Gloversville, retiring in 1971.

His wife, Marguerite Lombardoni Benton, died in 1961; his son, Kenneth N. Benton Jr., died in 1995.

Survivors include a son, Donald Benton of Perth; a daughter, Shirley Bianco of Vail Mills; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and his longtime companion, Alice Edel of Bleecker.

Burial will be in Fern Dale Cemetery, Johnstown.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the James A. Brennan Humane Society, Gloversville.

Arrangements are by the Amico Funeral Home, Gloversville.

Clarence Smith

July 15, 1996
Clarence Smith, 73, of 307 Pennsylvania Ave., Johnstown, died Monday at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville, following a long illness.

Born April 23, 1923, in Caroga Lake, he was the son of William and Lillian Smith. He lived in Mayfield for 17 years before moving to Johnstown in 1983.

Mr. Smith was an Army veteran of World War II.

He worked at the former G. Levor and Co. in Gloversville until it closed. He was later employed as a forklift operator for about 20 years at Coleco Industries on Patch Road in Mayfield, retiring in 1988.

Mr. Smith attended the Wesleyan Church of Gloversville.

He married Marion Leona Smith May 11, 1946. She died Oct. 7, 1992.

He is survived by a daughter, Sharon J. Walker of Mayfield; a son, Gary D. Smith of Johnstown; a brother, Kenneth Smith of Oregon; a sister, Shirley Coons of Meco; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Walrath & Bushouer Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday with the Rev. Mark Bailey, pastor of the Wesleyan Church, officiating.

Interment will be Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 311 Turner St., Suite 415, Utica 13501.

Helen Olbrych

July 15, 1996
Helen M. Olbrych, 89, of Milton Avenue, Amsterdam, died Monday at St. Mary's Hospital.

Born in Amsterdam Feb. 13, 1907, she was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Szufnara Zielinski.

Mrs. Olbrych was a lifelong area resident, and was educated locally.

She worked for the former Bigelow Sanford Carpet Mills and later for the New York State Tax Department.

Mrs. Olbrych was a member of the Church of St. John the Baptist and its Rosary Society.

She was married to Stanley Olbrych, who died in 1980.

Survivors include a brother, Peter Zielinski of Amsterdam; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Dorothy Olbrych who died in 1986.

Funeral services are 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the Guzielek-Pomykaj Funeral Home, 13 Belmont Place, Amsterdam, followed at 9 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of St. John the Baptist.

Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.

Calling hours are Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church or to Hospice of Amsterdam.
