Sadie LaTorre

July 22, 1996
Sadie V. Allen LaTorre 83, of Chapel Place, died Monday afternoon at St. Mary's Hospital after a short illness.

Born in Amsterdam, Nov. 29, 1912, the daughter of Anthony & Vernonica Lebutskas Petrusunas (Peterson). She was a 1932 graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School.

Mrs. LaTorre was employed as a sales clerk at the former Lurie's Department Store in Amsterdam.

She was a communicant of St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church, and a member of its Living Rosary Society. She was also a member of the Knights of Lithuania Council 100, North Broadalbin Beach Club, The Widows & Widowers, Club 60 and Sterling Care.

Her first husband, Louis K. Allen died in 1979; On. Aug. 8,. 1981 she married Matthew LaTorre who died October 8, 1986.

Survivors include: 2 Stepsons: Albert LaTorre of Port Orange, Fla. and Donald LaTorre of Sparta, N.J.; 2 Step-daughters: Jean Cassetta of Smithfield, R.I. and Diane Peyton of Macon, Ga.; l brother, Leon Peterson of Amsterdam and 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 2 nephews & cousins.

Services are Thursday at 9:15 a.m. at the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Pl., followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at St. Casimir's Church. Interment is in St. Casimir's Cemetery. Calling hours are this evening from 5 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Contributions may be made in her memory to St. Casimir's Memorial Fund. The Knights of Lithuania will conduct a ritual this evening at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Virgil Hazzard

July 23, 1996
Virgil E. Hazzard Sr., 81, of Brookmans Corners Road, died Tuesday at home after a long illness.

Born in Charleston, N.Y. on Nov. 17, 19l4, he was the son of Garfield and Margaret Vosburgh Hazzard.Mr. Hazzard attended area schools.

He was a dairy farmer on the family farm and was also a shipper with the Beech-Nut Corp. in Canajoharie for 37 years, retiring in 1977.

Mr. Hazzard was of the Protestant faith.

He was a founding member of the South Minden Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife, Audrey Hibbard Hazzard, whom he married Dec. 4, 1948; two sons, Virgil E. Hazzard Jr. of Fly Creek and James G. Hazzard of Fultonville; two daughters, Patricia A. Oare and Carolyn J. Oare, both of Johnstown; three brothers, Ward Hazzard of Gloversville, Garfield Hazzard Jr. of Fonda and Everett Hazzard of Flat Creek; five sisters, Ella Mae Colby of Fultonville, Nancy Eaker of Johnstown, Regina Peeler of Fonda and Marguarite Lohmeyer and Nettie Guyette, both of Amsterdam; 19 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St., Fultonville conducted by the Rev. Kenneth Dingman.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Maple Avenue Cemetery, Fultonville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the South Minden Volunteer Fire Department.

Clarence Bush

July 12, 1996
Charles A. Bush, 83, of Fawn Lake Road, Lake Pleasant and Frenchtown, New Jersey died Friday afternoon July 12 at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville after being stricken at his summer home in Lake Pleasant.

He was born August 22, 1912 in Monroe, N.Y. and was the son of Horace and Mary Smith Bush. Mr. Bush resided most of his life in Frenchtown, New Jersey.

He was a 1934 graduate of Lafayette College of Easton, Pa; with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering.

He was a self-employed Electrical Engineer and operted Bitonics, Inc. of Bethlehem, Pa. He also operated a dairy farm for several years and retired in 1977 when he sold Birtonics, Inc.

He was a member of Everittstown, N.J. United Methodist Church and was a member of the Northern New Jersey United Methodist Conference Board. He was a volunteer for the Office on Ageing, Meals on Wheels, former President of Board of the Delaware Valley High School, Oak Grove Grange, American Institute of Electrical Engineering.

On July 11, 1936 he married Margaret VanKeuren, who survives.

Survivors include his wife Margaret of 60 years, a son, Charles G. Bush of Flemington, N.J.; 2 daughters, Nancy Murphy of Gallatin, N.Y. and Janet Huber of Medford, N.J.; 5 grandchildren, and 1 great granddaughter.

A private graveside service took place on Tuesday, July 16 at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, South Bethlehem, N.H. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church of Lake Pleasant,or of Everittstown, N.J. or to the Speculator. Ambulance Corp.

Lillian Savel

July 26, 1996
Mrs. Lillian Lyon Savel, 23 of Eglin Air Force Base, died at home Friday after a short illness.

Mrs. Savel was born in Gloversville, graduated from Gloversville High School and Fulton Montgomery Community College and attended Florida University.

She moved to the Pensacola, Fla., area in 1993. Later, Mrs. Savel was a resident of Fort Walton Beach before moving to the base last year.

She was a student teacher at the Preparation Station day care center in Fort Walton Beach.

Mrs. Savel attended the First Baptist Church in Fort Walton Beach.

Survivors include her husband, Steven Savel, whom she married Sept. 23, 1995; her parents, Norman and Rachel Van Schaffel Lyon of Gloversville; a half-brother, Lewis Buseck of Gloversville; a sister, Teresa Lyon of Gloversville; and a half-sister, Martha Vienna of Gloversville.

A graveside service will be held at a time to be announced in Kings Cemetery, Northampton. There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Hollenbeck Funeral Home, Gloversville.

Arthur Smith

July 26, 1996
Arthur W. Smith Jr. 74, of 14th Circle, S.E., Largo, Fla., an Amsterdam resident until recently, died Friday at the Morton Plan Rehabilitation Center in Clearwater, Fla.

Born in Amsterdam on Feb. 19, 1922, he was the son of Arthur W. and Laura M. Knack Smith. Mr. Smith lived here all his live until moving to Florida in April.

He was employed as a driver for Boss-Linco before retiring in 1960.

Mr. Smith was a painter at the Elwood Museum's painting classes, a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church and a member of its Senior Citizens.

Survivors include his wife, Josephine DaBiere, whom he married Aug. 2, 1941; a son, Ronald D. Smith of Mesa, Ariz.; a daughter, Jennifer Jones of Warner Robins, Ga.,; a sister, Margaret Peterson of Rockville, Conn.; a brother, Vincent O. Smith of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Speculator; and five grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11 at St. Michael of Archangel Church. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery.

Calling hours will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association or to the church.

Homer Douglas

July 27, 1996
Homer F. Douglas, 85, of Route 5S, died at home Saturday after a short illness.

Born in Stark, Herkimer County, on Sept. 27, 1910, he was the son of Howard and Veda Galusha Douglas. He was educated at the Dutchtown Country School in Minden. He was a lifelong area resident.

He was a dairy farmer in Minden all his life until retiring in 1993.

Mr. Douglas was of the Lutheran faith and a member of the Holstein Fresion Association.

His wife, Rosa Schlotzhauer Douglas, whom he married March 27, 1937, died Aug. 5, 1994.

Survivors include four sons, August P. Douglas and Howard F. Douglas, both of Little Falls, Gerald D. Douglas of Fort Plain and George G. Douglas of Stephentown; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by a grandson; August Douglas Jr., in August 1984.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St. Fort Plain, with the Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating. Burial will be in Springfield Center Cemetery, East Springfield, Otsego County.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Service, Box 126, Canajoharie, N.Y. 13317.

Helena Gardiner

April 18, 1996
Helena Gardiner, 101, former resident of County Club Lane, Fort Johnson and summer resident of Wells, died April 18 at the Greenbrook Nursing Home in St. Petersburg, Fla. where she resided.

A graveside memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Green Hill Cemetery in Amsterdam with her nephew, the Rev. Gordon Marcellus, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Betz Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam.

Beverly Brundige

July 28, 1996
Mrs. Beverly Ann Brundige, 58, of 36 W. Eighth Ave., Gloversville, died Sunday at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam after a short illness.

Mrs. Brundige was born Dec. 19, 1937 in Gloversville and was the daughter of Joseph A. and Eva Geraldine DeMars Beaulieu. She lived in the Gloversville area all of her life and attended Gloversville schools.

She was a homemaker and was a member of the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Gloversville.

She married Fred Brundige on Jan. 23, 1954.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, Fred Brundige Jr. of Erie, Pa. and Raymond Brundige of Johnstown; one daughter, Lori Lynn Gallagher of Brackney, Pa.; two brothers, Joseph A. Beaulieu Jr. of Benson and Richard Beaulieu of Schenectady; three grandchildren; Michael and Joseph Brundige and Shawna Gallagher, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Walrath & Bushouer Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, N. Kingsboro Ave., Gloversville with the Rev. Thomas Boyle, Administrator, as Celebrant. Interment will take place at Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Box 261, Gloversville, 12078.
