Jordan Palos

November 26, 1996
Jordan L. Palos 61, of Phillip Road, Fort Plain, died Tuesday at Little Falls Hospital.

Born July 26, 1935, in New York City, he was the son of Lazaros and Donna Constantides. He graduated from Jamaica High School in Queens in 1952, and later attended Columbia University. He received an associate's degree in nursing from Dutchess County Community College in 1985.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1958 to 1960.

Mr. Palos was a self-employed certified tax preparer. He was also employed by Carlyle Hotel in New York as a night manger and auditor for more than 10 years. Later, he was employed by IBM Corp. as a tax accountant for nine years in Franklin Lakes, N.J. For several years he was employed by the New York state Wassaic Developmental Center.

Mr. Palos was a member of the Theodoroi Greek Orthodox Church of Gloversville and also a member of Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary in Johnstown; and a member of the Fort Plain Central School District AIDS Committee.

Survivors include his mother, of Lake Grove; his wife, Nancy Goodness, whom he married Sept. 23, 1961; two sons, Nicholas Palos of the Bronx and Stephan Palos of Kingston; two daughters, Christina Dubois of New Paltz and Emilie Brown of Fort Plain; two brothers, John Palos of Little Neck and James Palos of Staten Island; a sister, Paraskevi (Peggie) Palos of Lake Grove; and two grandchildren.

Calling hours are Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville.

The funeral service is 2 p.m. Saturday at the Theodoroi Greek Orthodox Church, 70 Washington St., Gloversville, with the Rev. Peter Daratsos officiating. Interment is Monday in Brunswick Rural Cemetery, New Paltz.

Josephine Staszewski

November 27, 1996
Josephine Staszewski, 92, of Slater Street, Amsterdam, died Wednesday morning at the Montgomery Meadows Residential Health Care Facility after a long illness.

She was born Aug. 31, 1904, in Amsterdam, the daughter of Anthony and Anna Dybas Staszewski. She was educated locally and was a lifelong area resident.

Miss Staszewski was employed by Ward Products Co. for many years, retiring in 1972. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Church.

Survivors include a sister, Emily Ferris of Medford, N.J.; a brother, William Staszewski of Amsterdam; nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral is at noon Saturday at the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home, 200 Church St., Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:30 p.m. at St. Stanislaus Church.

Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.

Calling hours are 4 to 6 p.m. Friday.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Stanislaus Church or a charity of one's choice.

Helen Scutt

December 2, 1996
Helen Arlene Scutt, 64, of the Montgomery Meadows in Amsterdam and formerly of West Main Street, Nelliston, died Monday after a long illness.

Born Nov. 13, 1932 in Nelliston, she was the daughter of Delbert Marshall and Katherine Bray. She graduated from Fort Plain High School.

At one time, she was a nurses aid at the former Canajoharie Nursing Home and later worked as a meat packer at the former Fort Plain Packing Co. in Fort Plain.

Mrs. Scutt lived at the Montgomery Meadows since 1977. She was a longtime Nelliston resident.

She was of the Reformed faith.

She married Graham Scutt on Sept. 28, 1963, in Fort Plain.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Kathleen M. Mykel of Fort Plain; three grandchildren, Rodney Summerfield and Scott Summerfield both of Gloversville, and Jeremy Mykel of Fort Plain; one nephew and two nieces.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain, with the Rev. Jeff Thibodeau officiating. Burial will be in Fort Plain Cemetery.

Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 324 Broadway, Albany, 12207.

Marie DeSieno

December 2, 1996
Marie A. Dandreano DeSieno, 68, of 69 River Road, Agawam, Mass., died Monday at Health South in Ludlow, Mass.

Born Dec. 29, 1927 in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of Luigi and Orsolina Tambasco Dandreano and settled in Agawam in 1957.

Mrs. DeSieno was an office worker for the former John H. Breck Corp. of Springfield, Mass., for 29 years, retiring in 1988.

She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church in Agawam and a member of the women's division of the Sons of Italy Lodge 379 in Springfield. She was a graduate of the Wilbur H. Lynch High School in Amsterdam.

Her husband the late Louis A. DeSieno died in 1980.

Survivors include a son, Louis, with whom she lived; two brothers, Anthony "Hank" and Vito Dandreano, both of Amsterdam; two sisters, Nellie Aragona of Schenectady and Ethel Poremba of Amsterdam; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 8 a.m.Thursday at the Tazzini Funeral Home, 22 Locust St., Springfield, Mass., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m at St. John The Evangelist Church. Burial will be in Agawam Center Cemetery.

Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Martha Sargalis

December 3, 1996
Mrs. Martha Baister Sargalis, 88, formerly of the High Rise Apartments, Amsterdam, died Tuesday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 28, 1908 in Richfield Springs, she was the daughter of John and Marion Simmons Baister. Mrs. Sargalis moved to Amsterdam in 1927.

She worked for Consolidated Novelty Co. until retiring in 1973.

Mrs. Sargalis was a communicant of St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Parish.

She also was a member of Sterling Care at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.

Her husband, Leo Sargalis, whom she married in 1927, died in 1973.

Survivors include a son, Leo T. Sargalis of Amsterdam, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services will be conducted at the convenience of the family and there will be no calling hours. Burial will be in St. Casimir's Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Casimir's Memorial Fund or to the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place.

Joseph Ferrara

December 3, 1996
Joseph T. Ferrara, 84, of Kingsboro Towers, formerly of South McNab Avenue, Gloversville, died Tuesday at his daughter's home after being stricken.

A lifelong Gloversville resident, Mr. Ferrara worked for Perrella Glove Co., retiring in 1988.

He was a member of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church.

Mr. Ferrara was also a member of the Widows and Widowers support group at St. Mary's Hospital.

His wife, Lillian Cavaliere Ferrara, whom he married Sept. 30, 1934, died in 1993.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Marilyn Lanphere and Mrs. Cecile Zajaceskowski, both of Gloversville; a brother, Dominic Ferrara of Johnstown; three sisters, Katherine Pino, Anna Marotta and Geraldine Mullins, all of Gloversville; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 9 a.m. Friday at the John W. Finocan Funeral Home, 13 Prospect Ave., and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.

Spring burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown.

Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or to charity.

Barbara Van Voast

December 2, 1996
Mrs. Barbara Simpson Van Voast, 74, of West Third Avenue, Johnstown, died Monday at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam, after being stricken at home.

Born in Louisville, Kent., Mrs. Van Voast graduated from high school there and later, graduated from Hollins College in Roanoke, Va.

Mrs. Van Voast was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church.

She was also a member of the Aldines Study Club and served on the board of managers of the Willing Helpers Home for Women.

Survivors include her husband, Herbert Van Voast II; and a son, R. Lyle Van Voast of Johnstown.

A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church or to charity.

Arrangements are by the Ehle Funeral Home.
