Sister Laurentia Bialkowska

December 12, 1996
Sister Laurentia Bialkowska C.R. 86, Sister of the Resurrection, died Thursday at Mount Loretto Nursing Home, Amsterdam.

Born April 10, 1910 in Poland, she was the daughter of Gregory and Rosalie Koralczyk Bialkowski.

She entered the religious order in 1940 and had celebrated her 50th anniversary in the profession in June of 1992. She served in the convents in Castleton, New York City, Yonkers, and Mount Loretto Nursing Home.

She is survived by a sister, Anna Malec of Central Falls, R.I.; three nephews and one great-niece.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Provencial Home Chapel of the Sisters of the Resurrection in Castleton.

Burial will take place in Resurrection Cemetery in Castleton.

Calling hours are from 3 to 5 p.m. today in the Provincialate, 35 Boltwood Ave., Castleton.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of the Resurrection Memorial Fund, 35 Boltwood Ave., Castleton, 12033-1011.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Lasak and Gigliotti Funeral Home, 8 Dudley Heights, Albany.

Lawrence "Larry" Fowler

December 11, 1996
Lawrence M. "Larry" Fowler, 55, of 216 Hickory Hill Road, Fort Plain, died Wednesday at his home.

Born July 19, 1941 in Little Falls, he was the son of William M. and Betty (Nellis) Fowler. He was a graduate of St. Johnsville High School and also attended Franklin Institute of Boston and the Rochester Institute of Technology. He lived most of his life in the St. Johnsville area.

He married Joanne Zoller on June 9, 1962, in St. Johnsville.

Mr. Fowler served with the United States Air Force enlisting in 1959 and was honorably discharged in 1963. While serving his country, he received the Good Conduct Medal.

For 30 years, Mr. Fowler worked as a service representative for the Niagara Mohawk Power Corp.

He was a member of St. John's Reformed Church and also a member of St. Johnsville Masonic Lodge, F&AM No. 611 and Fort Plain American Legion Post No. 554.

Survivors include his wife, Joanne, his children, Tara Stanton of Delray Beach, Fla.; Tamara Fowler of Glens Falls; Scott Fowler of Wilmington, N.C., Tanya Askew of Great Falls, Mont., Troy Fowler of Fort Plain; his step-mother, Elizabeth Fowler of Gloversville; four brothers, William, James, John and Chris Fowler; eight sisters, Judy VanDusen, Janet Hurwitz, Karen Fowler, Patricia Johnston, Mary Kiernan, Maureen Poorman, Kathleen Fornandes and Nancy Thornton; two grandchildren, Jared Fowler and Taylor Askew, several nieces, nephews and cousins, aunts and uncles.

He was pre-deceased by a daughter, Tracy Fowler.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Reformed Church, St. Johnsville, with the Rev. Russell Camp officiating. Burial will be at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville. Members of the St. Johnsville Masonic Lodge F&AM No. 611 are asked to meet at the funeral home this evening at 7 for services.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 73 N. Main St., Gloversville, 12078.

Gregory Guzzo

December 12, 1996
Gregory A. Guzzo, 75, of Sandalwood Lane, Glenville, died Thursday at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady after being stricken at home.

Born in Herkimer, Mr. Guzzo moved to Gloversville at the age of 10. He was a 1940 graduate of Gloversville High School. Mr. Guzzo resided in Glenville for the past 31 years.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Germany. After the war, he attended Albany Business College.

He worked for the General Electric Co. and later transferred to the Pittsfield plant, where he worked in the large steam turbine department. He retired from GE as a supervisor in 1981.

Mr. Guzzo was also a photographer. He won many awards and distinctions for his work. He was a member of the Schenectady Photographic Society.

He was also a member of the Annie Schaffer Senior Citizens and the Wednesday Senior Golf League at Riverview Country Club in Rexford.

Mr. Guzzo was a communicant of the Church of the Immaculate Conception.

He married Margaret Zayicek Guzzo on June 2, 1947.

In addition to his wife survivors include a son, G. Thomas Guzzo of Baldwinsville and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Road, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at noon at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Route 50.

Calling hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday and from 10 a.m. until the service Monday at the funeral home.

Spring burial will be in St. Anthony's Cemetery in Johnstown.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or American Diabetes Association, both in Albany.

Laura Borst

December 11, 1996
Mrs. Laura Kimmey Borst, 78, of Hammerstone Village, died Wednesday at the Eden Park Nursing Home after a long illness.

Born in Carlisle, Mrs. Borst was a lifelong area resident. She was a graduate of Cobleskill Central High School.

She worked at J.J. Newberry's and the Cobleskill Times-Journal, retiring in 1988.

She married C. Arlington Borst in 1939.

In addition to her husband, survivors include three daughters, Martha Becker of Carlisle and Linda Lawton and Janet Lawton, both of Schoharie; two sons, William Borst of Burlington, N.C., and John Borst of Irasburg, Vt.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11a.m. Saturday at the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home, 1 Chapel St. Spring burial will be in Slate Hill Cemetery, Town of Sharon.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to charity or the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association in Albany.

Joseph Spagnola

December 13, 1996
Joseph Spagnola, 76, formerly of Lake Road, Galway, died this morning at the Maplewood Manor in Ballston Spa where he resided the past 18 months.

Arrangements are incomplete and under the direction of the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, Amsterdam.

Hubert "Hubie" Winkler

December 11, 1996
Hubert F. Winkler, 72, of Westland Drive, Knoxville, Tenn., formerly of Schenectady, died Wednesday at home after a long illness.

Born and educated in Schenectady, Mr. Winkler moved to Tennessee a few years ago.

He was a graduate of the former St. Joseph's Academy, the University of Michigan and received a master's degree in civil engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

For 38 years, Mr. Winkler was a civil engineer for New York state before retiring.

He was a member of the Knights of St. John 100.

He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Morrell Winkler; two daughters, Madeline Kline of Knoxville and Wendy Taylor of Schenectady; a brother, Joseph H. Winkler of Schenectady; two sisters, Anna M. Winkler and Lois Frame, both of Schenectady and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 9:15 a.m. Saturday at the Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan St., and at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, during which the Knights of St. John will conduct a service at 7 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2330 Watt St., Schenectady 12304.

Richard A. Liszewski

December 17, 1996
Richard A. Liszewski, 73, of 62 Rockton St., Amsterdam, died this morning at the Albany Medical Center Hospital after a short illness.

Born July 30, 1923 in Amsterdam, he was the son of Walter and Josephine (Soltys) Liszewski. He was a lifelong Amsterdam resident and attended St. Stanislaus School and the Amsterdam Vocational and Technical School.

He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, participating in the China Offensive in Burma and the China Defensive Campaign. He received the Asiatic/Pacific Theatre Ribbon with three Bronze Stars.

Mr. Liszewski was employed by Mohasco Industries for 17 years and later was employed as a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years, retiring in January of 1986. He then worked part-time for the Amsterdam Printing & Litho Corp.

He was an umpire in the Wee-Men Baseball League for many years and bowled in several area leagues.

Mr. Liszewski was a member of the Polish American Veterans in Amsterdam.

He was a communicant of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam.

He married Katherine C. (Collins) Liszewski on Jan. 3, 1948.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Richard J. Liszewski and Dr. Timothy P. Liszewski, both of Amsterdam; two daughters, Carol Eckert of Clifton Park and Karen Liszewski of Amsterdam; three brothers, Edward Liszewski of Syracuse, Walter of Liszewski of Tully, and Robert Liszewski of Liverpool; seven grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a sister, Winifred Peet, and a brother, Joseph Liszewski.

Funeral services will be conducted at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the Betz Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 a.m. at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, East Main Street, Amsterdam. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or to the American Cancer Society.
