Betty Chriss

December 30, 1996
Betty J. Chriss, 71, of Touareuna Road, Amsterdam, died Monday morning at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, following a short illness.

She was born July 12, 1925, in Amsterdam, the daughter of Charles and Emma Benson Hornbeck Sr. and lived in Amsterdam most of her life.

She was employed as a waitress at the Carl Company in Amsterdam and Peggy's in Schenectady. She was later employed in sales at Pyramid Jewelers in Amsterdam, retiring in 1988.

Mrs. Chriss was a member of West Glenville Grange 1531 and a communicant of the West Charlton United Presbyterian Church.

She married Charles T. Chris Aug. 31, 1985.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three step-daughters, Sharon Bellamy and Susan Manell, both of Amsterdam, and Mary Lou Nicolella of Gloversville; seven step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral is 11 a.m. Wednesday at the West Charlton United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Ronald Sloat officiating.

Interment will be in Greenhill Cemetery, Amsterdam, in the spring.

Calling hours are today from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Betz Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Area 9 Special Olympics or the West Charlton United Presbyterian Church, in care of the funeral home.

Lawrence Baldine Sr.

December 30, 1996
Lawrence J. "Baldy" Baldine Sr., 71, of Market Street, Amsterdam, died Monday at St. Mary's Hospital after a long illness.

He was born in Amsterdam May 25, 1925, the son of Peter and Anna Sandy Baldine. He was educated in Amsterdam schools and was a lifelong city resident.

Mr. Baldine was employed as a fireman and security guard at the General Services Administration Navy Depot of Scotia for many years. He later was a self-employed carpenter and also served as clerk of the works of the new Montgomery County Courthouse project, retiring in 1992.

He served with the U.S. Army 24th Signal Co. in Japan at the conclusion of World War II and was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church.

Mr. Baldine was an avid golfer and served on the Amsterdam Municipal Golf Commission. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus Council 209.

Survivors include his wife, the former Anna Lauria, whom he married April 8, 1951; two sons, Peter Baldine of Yorkville, Ill., and Lawrence Baldine of Washington, D.C.; two daughters, Anna Maria Baldine of Washington, D.C., and Carmella Cowles of Mayfield; one brother, Anthony Baldine of Amsterdam; three grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services are 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the DeStefano Funeral Home, Route 5S, Amsterdam, followed at 9:15 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church.

Interment will follow in St. Michael's Cemetery.

Calling hours are 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps or to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

John Swierzowski

June 30, 1996
John Harold Swierzowski, 77, of VanDerveer Street, Amsterdam, died Sunday morning at the Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility.

Born Sept. 1, 1918 in Amsterdam, he was the son of Stanislaus and Edna Dzikowicz Swierzowski. He was educated locally and was a lifelong area resident.

Mr. Swierzowski was employed by the Mohawk Finishing Co. and retired in 1987. He was a World War II Army veteran.

He was a member of the Church of St. John the Baptist and the former St. John's Society.

Mr. Swierzowski is survived by three brothers, Edmund Swierzowski of Tribes Hill, the Rev. Stanley Swierzowski of Amsterdam and Joseph Swierzowski of Amsterdam; three sisters, Theresa Krong, Helen Swierzowski and Alice Janusz, all of Amsterdam; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Guzielek-Pomykaj Funeral Home, 13 Belmont Place, followed at 10 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of St. John The Baptist. Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of St. John The Baptist or to the Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility.

Victor Rajkowski

June 30, 1996
Victor W. Rajkowski, 72, of Auriesville Road, Fultonville, died Sunday morning at St. Mary's Hospital after a short illness.

Born Oct. 20, 1923 in Amsterdam, he was the son of Nellie and Stanley Rajkowski. He attended Amsterdam Schools and has resided in Fultonville since 1959.

Mr. Rajkowski was employed by White Mop Wringer Co. in Fultonville for 25 years, retiring in 1992. For the past two years, he was a driver for the Montgomery County Veterans Administration.

Mr. Rajkowski was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, and was a member of the John J. Wyszomirski Post 701, American Legion, in Amsterdam.

Mr. Rajkowski attended the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Tribes Hill and also the Auriesville Shrine.

He married Sally Czelusniak Rajkowski on Oct. 26, 1947.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Richard T. Rajkowski of Amsterdam and Gregory W. Rajkowski of Tribes Hill; two granddaughters, Cristina Nolan of Galway and Ashleigh Rajkowski of Tribes Hill; two great-grandsons, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services and calling hours will be at the convenience of the family at the Betz Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, with the Rev. James Gulley officiating. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Tribes Hill 12177, or to a charity of one's choice.

Ruth Kretser

June 29, 1996
Ruth Louise Kretser, 89, of County Route 16, Town of West Almond, died Saturday morning at her son's home after a long illness.

Born June 9, 1907 in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of William Harting and Pauline Frisch. She graduated from Canajoharie schools.

Mrs. Kretser was employed as a secretary at Beech-Nut and later worked as an assistant cashier at Central National Bank in Canajoharie.

She was a resident of Sprakers until 1988, at which time she moved to Angelica.

She was a member of the Sprakers Reformed Church.

She married Archibald Kretser on May 29, 1929. He died on March 2, 1973.

Mrs. Kretser is survived by one son, Paul A. Kretser of Angelica; one brother, Walter Harting of San Jose, Calif., three grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie, with the Rev. James Foster, pastor of Sprakers Reformed Church, officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Canajoharie.

Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Comstock Hospice, 1225 W. State St., Olean, N.Y. 14760.

Charles Colvin

June 29, 1996
Charles W. Colvin, 61, of 3 Third Ave., Amsterdam, died Saturday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Colvin was born in Schenectady and educated in Schenectady schools. He lived in Broadalbin for several years until moving to Amsterdam last year.

At one time, Mr. Colvin was employed at Carpenter & Sunderland in Broadalbin. Later, he worked at Morini Coal & Oil for 15 years and was most recently employed in the shipping/receiving department of the Sonoco Products Co. for 15 years, retiring in 1990.

Mr. Colvin was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.

He was a former member and past commander of American Legion Post 337 in Broadalbin and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8690 in Broadalbin, American Legion Post 701, the LaVoiture 40/8 Local 814 and the Johnstown Moose Lodge.

He married Lean Loveless Colvin on April 27, 1963.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, James T. Smith of Gloversville and Charles L. Colvin of Amsterdam; two daughters, Sandra L. MacFarland and Brenda Ann Colvin, both of Broadalbin; four brothers, Lester Colvin of Crescent, Frank Smith and Bruce Colvin, both of Schenectady, and Burt Colvin of Johnstown; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, 38 W. Main St., Broadalbin. Burial will be in Foster Hill Cemetery. Galway.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. today and 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Barry Bump Sr

June 28, 1996
Barry L. Bump Sr., 59, of County Route 101, Gloversville, died Friday at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam after a long illness.

Born in Amsterdam, Mr. Bump attended schools in Amsterdam and Johnstown.

He was employed at the former Acme Market in Johnstown and later at the Saveway in Cobleskill. Most recently, Mr. Bump worked at the P&C Market in Johnstown. He retired in September 1993 due to illness.

Mr. Bump operated Barry's Corner Grocery from 1965 to 1973.

He married Maureen McCloskey Bump on April 28, 1963.

In addition to his wife, survivors include five children; a sister, Sondra Frasier of Johnstown; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday at the Johnstown Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. Burial will be private.

Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home, 215 E. Main St., Johnstown.
