Eleanor Horning

July 13, 1996
Eleanor T. Horning, 69, of Dillenbeck Road, Palatine Bridge, died Saturday at Bassett Health Care in Cooperstown after a long illness.

Born in Cherry Valley, May 19, 1927, she was the daughter of Edgar Spencer and Bertha Eckerson. She graduated from Fultonville High School in 1944.

She moved to Palatine Bridge from the Town of Root in 1972.

Mrs. Horning was a machine operator at the Beech-Nut Life Savers Corp. in Canajoharie for 30 years, retiring in 1985.

After her retirement, she spent winters in St. Cloud, Fla.

She was a member of the Canajoharie United Methodist Church and the Cross Trails Square Dance Club.

Survivors include her husband, Alfred A. Horning, whom she married Feb. 2, 1974; two daughters, Donna Marie Jones of Nelliston and Peggy Lee Allen of Canajoharie; a son, Dale Lisle Post of Gloversville; a stepson, Richard Horning of Gloversville; a step-daughter, Sandra Gibson of Canajoharie; a brother, Carl Spencer of Ballston Lake; a sister, Doris McCaffery of St. Cloud, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda.

Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 126, Canajoharie 13317.

Elvira Fletcher

July 14, 1996
Elvira M. Fletcher, 73, of State Highway 29, Gloversville, died Sunday morning at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, after being stricken.

Born Oct. 13, 1922, in the Town of Mayfield, she was the daughter of John P. and Jessie E. Wert Fletcher.

She was a lifelong area resident and was educated in Broadalbin schools.

Miss Fletcher worked in the shipping department of several area glove shops, including the former Spear Gloves in Gloversville, and for 20 years at the former Crescendoe Glove Company in Gloversville until 1974.

She is survived by a brother, Woodrow W. Fletcher of Gloversville; a sister, Charlotte J. Fletcher, also of Gloversville; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Walrath & Bushouer Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday with the revs. Matthew Collins and Herbert Johnson officiating.

Interment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 261, Gloversville, or to St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam.

Clarence Kosinski

July 15, 1996
Clarence J. Kosinski, 87, of Midline Road, Amsterdam, died Monday at Albany Medical Center.

Born Nov. 1, 1908, he was the son of Jacob and Margaret Czelusniak Kosinski. Mr. Kosinski was a lifelong area resident and was educated locally.

He was employed as a carpenter and worked for various contracting firms until retiring.

He was a member of the Senior Citizens Bowling League and also a member of the Carpenters Union.

Mr. Kosinski was a member of St. Stanislaus Church.

He married Clare Zielonkiewicz Kosinski on June 18, 1933. She died Oct. 5, 1988.

Survivors include a brother, Raymond Kosinski of Amsterdam; three sisters, Mary Konieczny, Lottie Jurus and Norma Grzyb, all of Amsterdam; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services are 11 a.m. Thursday at the Amsterdam Funeral Chapel, 13 Belmont Place, followed at 11:30 by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Stanislaus Church.

Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.

Calling hours are today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Stanislaus Church or to St. Stanislaus School.

Dorothy Dybowski

July 16, 1996
Dorothy A. Dybowski, 68, of McCaffrey Avenue, Hagaman, died Tuesday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

Born March 19, 1928, she was the daughter of Stephen and Winnie Jankowski and was a lifelong area resident. Mrs. Dybowski was educated locally.

She was employed by the Amsterdam Printing and Litho Co. until retiring several years ago.

She was a member of St. Stanislaus Church.

Survivors include her husband, John E. Dybowski, whom she married June 25, 1947; a son, John S. Dybowski of Amsterdam; a daughter, Karen Renzo of Harriman, Tenn.; three grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services are 8:30 a.m. Friday at the Guzielek-Pomykaj Funeral Home, 13 Belmont Place, followed at 9 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Stanislaus Church.

Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.

Calling hours are Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Fern Sartin

July 16, 1996
Mrs. Fern L. Sartin, 59, of 329 County Route 122, Gloversville, died Tuesday morning at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville following a long illness.

Born Feb. 2, 1937, in Broadalbin, she was the daughter of Lester and Blanche Dimick Pettit.

She resided in Broadalbin until age 14, then moved to Gloversville where she remained the rest of her life. She attended Broadalbin schools.

She married Bert B. Sartin Sr., Feb. 25, 1953. He died Jan. 19, 1980. Her close companion of 15 years, Clarence Chamberlain Sr., died Feb. 22, 1995.

Survivors include three sons, Bert B. Sartin Jr. and James E. Sartin of Gloversville and William A. Sartin of Watertown; three daughters, Yvonne A. Curtis, Charmaine R. Sartin and Renee A. Sartin, all of Gloversville; two brothers, Orrin Pettit of Broadalbin, Robert Pettit of Florida; a sister, Violet VanNostrand of Texas; four half-brothers, Lawrence Frye of Northville, Donald, Lewis and Gordon Frye, all of Broadalbin; five half-sisters, Ruth and Evelyn Vickers, Elsie Hayes, Carolyn and Genevieve Fyre, all of Broadalbin; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Jeffords Chapel, 85 W. Main St., Broadalbin, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Interment will be in Broadalbin Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Central Association for the Blind, or to the Lions Club Eye Fund.

John Hamblin

November 7, 1996
John H. Hamblin, 88, of Route 80, Starkville, died Thursday evening at Valley Health Services in Herkimer after a short illness.

Born July 9, 1908 in the Town of Stark, he was the son of James Hamblin and Carley Shaver. He was educated in the Fort Plain schools.

Mr. Hamblin was employed by the Town of Stark Highway Department in many capacities for many years and was later employed by the Fort Plain Cemetery for 25 years, retiring in 1981.

He was a lifelong area resident and a member of the Starkville United Methodist Church. He was the caretaker of the church for more than 50 years and Town of Stark historian for many years.

He married Florence O. Stiles on Aug. 23, 1941. She died Nov. 8, 1993.

Survivors include a son, Edward Aney of Herkimer; a daughter, Christine Dager of St. Johnsville; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Starkville United Methodist Church, Route 80, Starkville, under the direction of the Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain. The Rev. Joseph Timlin will officiate.

Burial will be in Fort Plain Cemetery.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 126, Canajoharie, 13317; or to Starkville United Methodist Church Memorial Fund in care of Clarissa R. Young, treasurer, 443 Hoke Road, Fort Plain, 13339.

Howard Ward

November 10, 1996
Howard E. Ward, 78, of the St. Johnsville Nursing Home, formerly of Fordsbush, died Sunday at the nursing home after a long illness.

Born Nov. 10, 1918 in Minden, he was the son of Willard Ward and Izora Ash. Mr. Ward was educated in the Fordsbush Country schools.

He was a dairy farmer in Minden on his own farm for 50 years, retiring in 1986.

Mr. Ward was a lifelong area resident and lived at the nursing home since 1992. He was a member of Dairyman's League Co-Op.

He was of the Lutheran faith.

Mr. Ward married Ruth Wheadon on Sept. 14, 1940, in Canajoharie. She died April 21, 1986.

Survivors include a son, Dale H. Ward of Fort Plain; a sister, Leona Wheadon, also of Fort Plain; three grandchildren, Nancy Wengenack of Rochester, Minn., Deborah Waner of Fort Plain, and Thomas Ward of Palatine Bridge; two great-grandchildren and one niece.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain, with the Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating.

Burial will take place in Fort Plain Cemetery.

Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
