Donald Brothers

December 14, 1996
Donald A. Brothers, 85, of 41 Steele Ave., Gloversville, died Saturday at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville, after being stricken at home.

He was born March 29, 1911, in the Town of Johnstown, the son of Arthur and Jennie Drumm Brothers. He lived in the Town of Glen for a short time during his childhood.

Mr. Brothers first worked at the American Locomotive Co. in Schenectady. He was then a self-employed milkman for more than 20 years and finally a general mechanic with the Gloversville Enlarged School District for about 15 years, retiring in 1978.

He was a member of the North Main Street United Methodist Church in Gloversville and a former member of the Sunset Bowling League.

He married Florence P. Putman Dec. 13, 1933.

Survivors include his wife of Gloversville; a daughter, Beverly J. Mackey of Gloversville; three sons, Donald E. Brothers of Scotia, Robert C. Brothers and Ronald M. Brothers, both of Gloversville; three sisters, Marion Waite and Leora Peeler, both of Gloversville, and Eleanor Gray of Bleecker; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Kimberly Calhoun, as well as five brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Walrath & Bushouer Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, with the Rev. Steven Clunn, pastor of the North Main Street United Methodist Church, officiating.

Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Spring burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville.

Bertha Flanders

December 11, 1996
Bertha B. Flanders, 90, formerly of St. Johnsville, died Wednesday at the Phillip Hulitar Care Center in Providence, R.I., after a month-long illness. A long-time resident of 12 John St., St. Johnsville, she lived with her daughter in Barrington, R.I., since February.

Born Aug. 25, 1906, in Greenfield Center, she was the daughter of William Grant and Isabella Louise Cook Wilsey.

She attended Daketown Elementary School and graduated from Ballston Spa High School in 1924. She earned a bachelor of arts degree from Keuka College in 1928, when she moved to St. Johnsville and began teaching there. She retired in June 1968.

Mrs. Flanders was a member of the Maques Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as chaplain; a member of the Retired Teachers Association of Upper Montgomery County, serving as friendly service chairwoman; and a member of the Retired Teachers of St. Johnsville. She was national defense chairwoman for the Daughters of the American Revolution and served as treasurer for the senior citizens club.

She was a member of the Grace Congregational United Church of Christ and was involved in Sunday school, the Philathea Class and the 2F Club. She also served as president of the PTA.

She married Clark Paris Burkdorf Aug. 17, 1935. He died Sept. 25, 1952. She married Vernon Cecil Flanders April 12, 1968. He died March 15, 1971.

Survivors include a daughter, Marion I. Fodor of Barrington, R.I.; three granddaughters; two grandsons; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by two sons, Clark Stanley Burkdorf, who died July 29, 1958; and Richard Lee Burkdorf, who died Dec. 10, 1991; and two brothers, Arthur and E. Donald Wilsey.

Funeral services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Grace Congregational United Church of Christ, 20 Center St., St. Johnsville, with the Rev. Robert C. Dievendorf officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Spring burial will be in West St. Johnsville Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Grace Congregational United Church of Christ Memorial Fund.

Arrangements are by the Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville.

Aniela "Nellie" Kosiba

December 15, 1996
Aniela "Nellie" Kosiba, 89, of Van Derveer Street, Amsterdam, died Sunday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 14, 1907 in Schenectady, she came to the Amsterdam area in 1932. She was educated in Schenectady.

Mrs. Kosiba was employed by the former Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Mills and later worked for Consolidated Novelty until retiring.

She was a member of the St. Stanislaus Ladies Rosary Society; The St. John's Ladies Rosary Society and was a St. John's Pierogi Lady.

She was a member of the Church of St. John The Baptist and a former member of St. Stanislaus Church.

She married Albert A. Kosiba on Sept. 17, 1932. He died June 4, 1980.

Survivors include one son, Leo M. Kosiba of Alpharetta, Ga.; one brother, Edward Panfil of Burnt Hills; two grandsons, Michael Kosiba of Alpharetta, Ga., and Robert Kosiba of Gainesville, Ga.; two granddaughters, Katherine Kosiba of Roswell, Ga.; and Christine Kosiba of Page, Ariz.; four great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Guzielek-Pomykaj Funeral Home, 13 Belmont Place, followed at 9 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of St. John the Baptist.

Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The St. Stanislaus Ladies Rosary Society will recite the Rosary at 4:15 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Church of St. John the Baptist.

Anthony Schultz

December 14, 1996
Anthony M. Schultz, 91, of Middleburgh, died Saturday at the Robinson Terrace Health Care Facility after a brief illness.

Mr. Schultz was born in Westfield, Mass., and lived in Sharon Springs from 1965 to 1986 when he moved to Middleburgh.

He was vice president of the New York and New Jersey Lubricating Company, retiring in 1967.

After his retirement, Mr. Schultz was a farmer in the Sharon Springs area until 1986.

Survivors include his wife, Stasia Usyk Schultz; two sons, Anthony Schultz of Escondido, Calif., and Kenneth Schultz of Albany; a brother, Raymond Schultz of Boca Raton, Fla.; and a sister, Wanda Meagher of Agawam, Mass.

A service is set for 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Route 20, Sharon Springs.

Burial will be in Sharon Cemetery in the spring.

Calling hours will be private.

Dorothy Yates

December 14, 1996
Mrs. Dorothy Mae Yates, 77, of Kasson Drive, Canada Lake, died Saturday at home after a long illness.

Born in Gloversville, Mrs. Yates was a graduate of Gloversville High School and attended Oneonta State Teachers College, Bard College and the Gloversville Business School.

She also completed real estate courses in Albany and at Fulton Montgomery Community College. Mrs. Yates was a bookkeeper for the New York State Veterans Hospital Authority in Gloversville in the late 1940s.

She was a real estate saleswoman and a New York state licensed notary public and was a substitute teacher at the Oppenheim Ephratah School, the Meco School and in the Johnstown School System.

Mrs. Yates owned and operated Grandma's Attic Antiques and Craft Store in Caroga Lake.

She owned and operated various businesses with her husband, including the Caroga Lake General Store, and Canada Lake Store and Island View Cottages.

Mrs. Yates also was a 50-year partner with her husband in the Burton H. Yates Real Estate Brokerage in Canada Lake.

Mrs. Yates was a member of the North Main Street United Methodist Church and the Christian Faith Fellowship, both in Gloversville. She was a Sunday school teacher, youth leader, choir member and soloist.

Survivors include her husband, Burton E. Yates, whom she married Dec. 31, 1941; two daughters, Diane Yates-Comtois of Albany and Kathy Smith of Aurora, Colo.; three sons, Alan Yates of Clifton Park, David Yates of Caroga Lake and Richard Yates of Tenafly, N.J.; two brothers, Sherwood Smith of Johnstown and Robert Smith of Gloversville; a sister, Beverly Thompson of Gloversville; 14 grandchildren; and a great-grand-daughter.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the North Main Street United Methodist Church.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Ehle Funeral Home, 15 N. William St., Johnstown.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Gloversville.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, Gloversville.

Elisabeth Smith

December 14, 1996
Mrs. Elisabeth S. Smith, 78, of 85 E. Main St., Johnstown, died Saturday at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville after a long illness.

Born in Rome, Ga., Mrs. Smith was a graduate of Cornelia High School in Cornelia, Ga., and attended the University of Georgia in Athens. She was a member of the Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority. She was the secretary of the Polyflex Bag and Container Corp., a family-owned business operated by her husband.

Along with her husband, Mrs. Smith also owned and operated T.L.C. Standardbred Stables in Saratoga Springs. She was a member and former deacon of the First Presbyterian Church and a member of the Students Club, the Johnstown Hospital and Wells House Auxiliary and the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Her husband, Holland Wright Smith II, whom she married Dec. 31, 1937, died July 16, 1967.

Survivors include a son, H. Wright Smith III of Johnstown; a daughter, Lisa S. Mehigan of Johnstown; a brother, George B. Stoffregen of Cornelia; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service is set for 1 p.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church. There will be no calling hours.

Cremation will be at the Leatherstocking Crematory in Cherry Valley.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, the First Presbyterian Church, or to the Johnstown Hospital and Wells House Auxiliary.

Arrangements are by the Ehle Funeral Home, 15 N. William St.
