Ambrose Anderson
December 18, 1996
Ambrose "Bum" Anderson, 85, of Main Street in Fort Hunter died this morning at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam.
Born in Glen on July 24, 1911, he was the son of Richard and Bertha Snyder Anderson. He attended schools in Glen and in the Town of Florida.
Mr. Anderson was employed most of his life on the family farm and he owned and operated his own farm in Mill Point. He retired from the farm in 1955. He was later employed by Anderson Instrument Co. in Glen for 19 years, retiring in 1974.
His first wife, Margaret Canary Anderson, whom he married in 1941, died in 1945. He married Vera Nelson Anderson on Nov. 28, 1957.
In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, David Anderson of Galway, Gary Hammond of Townville, S.C., Robert Hammond of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; two daughters, Kay Fisher of Tempe, Arizona, Joyce Brach of Fort Collins, Colorado; a brother, Everett Anderson of Fonda; three sisters, Florence Pashley of Shurburne, Betty Young of Utica, Dorothy Anthony of Hudson Falls; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Betz Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam. A calling hour will be held from noon to 1 prior to the service.
Burial will be in Maple Avenue Cemetery in Fultonville.
Memorial contributions may be sent to Hospice of Amsterdam, the Fort Hunter Volunteer Fire Department or to the American Cancer Society.
William Kowalski

William J. Kowalski, 84, of Clarke Avenue in Amsterdam, died Tuesday afternoon at St. Mary's Hospital, following a short illness.
Born Jan. 9, 1912 in Amsterdam, he was the son of Frank and Katherine Kowalski Kowalski, and was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Kowalski was employed as a weaver by Mohasco Industries in Amsterdam for 49 years, retiring in 1977.
He served with the United States Army Air Corps during World War II.
He was a member of the John J. Wyszomirski Post No. 701 of the American Legion and was also a member of the Mohasco Quarter Century Club.
Mr. Kowalski was a communicant of St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church of Hagaman.
He was predeceased by a son, Randolph Kowalski, on Sept. 18, 1983.
He married Gertrude Jablonski on Dec. 10, 1943.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, William Kowalski and Thomas Kowalski, both of Amsterdam; three sisters, Irene Patrick of Ontario, Calif., Katherine Jezierski of Charlton, and Lucy Vainauskas of Frederick, Md.; four grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Betz Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, and will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen's Church in Hagaman.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Fort Johnson.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Stephen's Church, in care of the funeral home.
Jack Streun
December 17, 1996
Private services will be held for Jack R. Streun, 72, of County Highway 107 in West Galway, who died Tuesday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.
Born in Amsterdam, Mr. Streun was a 1943 graduate of the Wilbur H. Lynch High School in Amsterdam. He was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Streun was a machinist at the former Mohawk Carpet Mills and taught in the Manpower training program. He was also a self-employed carpenter until retiring.
He was a member of St. Luke's Church.
Survivors include a sister, Betty S. Varsoke of Amsterdam.
There will be no calling hours.
Spring burial will be in Hagaman Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Broadalbin Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
Arrangements are by the Johnson-Lindsay Funeral Home, Amsterdam.
Richard Trzaskos
December 16, 1996
Richard A. Trzaskos, 73, of Story Avenue in Niskayuna, died Monday at home after a long illness.
Born in Amsterdam, Mr. Trzaskos lived in Niskayuna since 1967.
He worked in the quality control department of the Department of Defense for 41 years, retiring 13 years ago as supervisor.
During World War II, Mr. Trzaskos served with the Army Air Forces in China, Burma and India.
He was a communicant of St. Helen's Roman Catholic Church.
Mr. Trzaskos was a member and past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1895; the China, Burma, India Veterans Association; and the Moose Lodge in Johnstown.
Survivors include his wife, Donna Costello Trzaskos; two sons, Brian R. Trzaskos of Massena and Tech. Sgt. David E. Trzaskos of the U.S. Air Force, stationed at Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, Miss.; a daughter, Dawn Chisholm of Atlanta, Ga.; a brother, John Trzaskos of Amsterdam; and four grandsons.
Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan St., Schenectady, and will be followed at 9:30 by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Helen's Church.
Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Amsterdam.
Calling hours are from 3 to 5 this afternoon and 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Marion Zainor
December 16, 1996
Marion P. Zainor, 101, of The Home for Elderly Women on Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, died Monday at St. Mary's Hospital.
Born Sept. 5, 1895 in Perth, she was the daughter of Lewis and Eva Dersch Pepper. She was a graduate of Amsterdam High School and also attended the Oneonta Normal School, graduating in 1914.
She was a teacher in the Amsterdam school system for a short time, and also taught in Johnstown schools for two years. She then moved to Freeport in the early 1920s and taught in elementary schools on Long Island.
She was a member of the Freeport Methodist Church and later was a member of the United Methodist Church of Amsterdam.
She married Joseph Zainor on March 21, 1925. He died March 28, 1975.
Survivors include two daughters, Catherine Z. McGrath of Sun City Center, Fla, and Joan Z. Wylie of Pittsburgh; a sister, Florence P. Quinn of Amsterdam; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and three nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Johnson-Lindsay Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, Amsterdam, with the Rev. Cal Briggs-Harris officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Tribes Hill.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church of Amsterdam.
Alice Zugalla
December 15, 1996
Mrs. Alice Houst Zugalla, 93, formerly of Albany, died Sunday in Colorado Springs.
Born in Akron, Mrs. Zugalla was a graduate of the state University of New York at New Paltz. She lived in Albany from 1928 until 1994, when she moved to Colorado.
She taught in Amsterdam, Delmar and Albany schools and was active with the Parent Teacher Association.
Mrs. Zugalla was also active with the Red Cross and March of Dimes. She was a Girl Scout leader of Albany Troop 35 for 20 years.
She was the widow of Percy Lane Zugalla.
Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Edwards of Colorado Springs; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Evergreen Funeral Home Chapel.
Burial will be private.
Beatrice Peters
December 17, 1996
Mrs. Beatrice Peters, 64, of Route 30, Hope, died Tuesday at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville after being stricken.
Born in Gloversville, Mrs. Peters was educated in Perth and in Edinburg schools. She lived in the Town of Hope for the past 45 years.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Peters was a member of the Hope Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.
She attended the Wells Wesleyan Church.
Survivors include her husband, Hugh Peters, whom she married Nov. 23, 1956; two sons, Hugh Peters Jr. of Hope and Michael Peters of Gloversville; and two grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Northville Funeral Home , 401 Bridge St., Northville.
Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Spring burial will be in Willard Cemetery, Northville.
