Frances Merritt

Oct. 25, 1996
Frances K. Merritt, 66, of Pine Street, Rensselaer, died Friday evening at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, following a short illness.

She was born May 26, 1930, in West Chazy, the daughter of Lewis and Doris Casavaugh Budro. She lived in the Albany area most of her life.

She was at one time employed by the Two Guys department store in Schenectady. She was later employed as a clerk in the tax sort department of the New York state Department of Taxation and Finance. She retired this month.

Mrs. Merritt was of the Roman Catholic faith.

She was married March 27, 1948, to Harvey Merritt. He died March 3. She was also predeceased by a sister, Harriette Budro.

Survivors include a son, Lewis Merritt of Rensselaer; two daughters, Carolyn Gressick and Diane Riley, both of Amsterdam; a sister, Juna Parrow of Ausable Forks; six grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral service is Tuesday at 8:15 a.m. at the Betz Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Amsterdam.

Cremation at Parkview Crematory, Schenectady, will be followed by inurnment in Coeymans Hollow Cemetery.

Calling hours are Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps in care of the funeral home.

Gordon Heiser

Oct. 25, 1996
Gordon L. Heiser, 88, of 33 E. Clark St., Ilion, died Friday at St. Luke's Hospital in Utica.

He was born June 8, 1908, in Fort Plain, the son of Gifford and Lula Dygert Heiser. He was educated in Fort Plain schools.

Mr. Heiser lived in Starkville at one time where he ran the family farm. He also lived in Little Falls until moving to Ilion 24 years ago. Most recently he was employed by the Herkimer County Highway Department for 20 years.

Mr. Heiser was of the Methodist faith.

He was married to Melvina Fletcher. She died in 1964.

Survivors include three sons, Adrian Downs of Ilion, John Downs of Ashland, Va., and James Downs of Ilion; three daughters, Freda Louis of Middleville, Catherine Quackenbush of South Carolina and Gladys Talcott of Ilion; two sisters, Anna Mae Handy of Fort Plain and Elma Warn of St. Johnsville; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren;, also nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services are 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville.

Burial will be in West St. Johnsville Cemetery.

Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ilion Ambulance Corps. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Ashley Putnam

Oct. 26, 1996
Ashley Marie Putnam, 2, of Jacksonburgh Road, Little Falls, died Saturday at Albany Medical Center Hospital after a long illness.

She was born in Syracuse June 2, 1994, the daughter of James A. and Julie A. Brownell Putnam Jr.

Survivors include her parents of Little Falls; paternal grandfather and step-grandmother James A. and Toni Putnam Sr. of Fort Plain; paternal grandmother June L. Putnam of Fort Plain; maternal grandparents Albert and Cheryl Brownell of Fort Plain; paternal great-grandparents Eva Ballard of Fort Plain, Harold Mowers of Dewey, Okla., and Marie Gleason of Penn Yan; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

The funeral is 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain, with the Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating.

Burial will be in Freysbush Cemetery.

Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church c/o St. Paul's, 36 Lydius St., Fort Plain.

Inez Showerman

October 26, 1996
Inez Showerman, 104, of 690 W. German St., Herkimer, died Saturday at Valley Health Services.

Born Aug. 25, 1892 in Minden, she was the daughter of the late Willard and Elizabeth Kelly Showerman. She resided on a Fort Plain dairy farm and attended St. Johnsville schools. She and her sister ran the dairy farm after the death of her parents.

After moving from the farm, Miss Showerman and her sister Ethel resided on Monroe Street in St. Johnsville until 1982. Miss Showerman is listed as a descendant in the 1994 published genealogy "The Descendants of William Kellie of Scotland."

Miss Showerman was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in St. Johnsville.

Survivors include her cousins, Elden and Urilla Brown of Ilion; Shirley Naugle of Little Falls, Nancy Chrisman of Williamsville and Gary Naugle of Little Falls.

She was predeceased by her sister, Ethel Showerman, and a step-brother, LeRoy Goodale.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fort Plain Cemetery.

There are no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

Sophie Spak

October 26, 1996
Mrs. Sophie Spak, 67, of Route 9, Saratoga Springs, died Saturday at home.

Mrs. Spak came to this country from Ukraine in 1956.

She worked at the ARC sheltered workshop in Ballston Spa and participated in the Special Olympics bowling league.

Mrs. Spak was a member of Hope Church in Ballston Spa.

Survivors include her husband, Michaek Spak; three sons, Peter Spak and Michael Spak of Staten Island, and John Spak of Amsterdam; three daughters, Kathy Nilan of Albuquerque, N.M., and Maria Mahar of New Hope, Pa., and Helen Spak of Argyle; and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hope Church. Burial will follow in Factory Village Cemetery, Ballston Spa.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Tunison Funeral Home, 105 Lake Ave.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hope Church, 208 Greenfield Ave., Ballston Spa 12020.

Stephen Kusky

October 25, 1996
Stephen J. Kusky, 73, of Third Street, Troy, died Friday at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville.

Mrs. Kusky was born in Kansas City.

He was a carpenter and millwright, working out of Union Local 370 until his retirement in 1989.

Mr. Kusky served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Blanche L. Gale-Kusky; five sisters, Genevive Ryan, Joan O'Neil and Josephine Kline, all of Troy, Frances Leggitt of Largo, Fla., and Eleanor Trainor of Schenectady; two brothers, Edmund and Thomas J. Kusky both of Clifton Springs, and Leland J. Burke of Homestead, Fla.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the William Leahy Funeral Home, 336 Third St., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 at St. Joseph's Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Calling hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Gordon Burton

October 26, 1996
Gordon W. Burton, 70, of Abel Drive, Johnstown, died Saturday at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville.

Born in Piseco, Mr. Burton was a 1943 graduate of the Mayfield school, where he was valedictorian of his class.

In 1944, he attended Cornell University as a member of its ROTC program.

Mr. Burton served in the Army Air Force in 1945. He graduated in 1950 from Hamilton College, where he played on the golf and basketball teams.

In the 1950s and 1960s he was a sales representative for the Mobil Oil Co. From 1975 to 1995, Mr. Burton was president of the Burton Leather Co.

In May 1995, he started the H.F.M. Payroll Service, which he operated until the time of his death.

Mr. Burton was a member and life master of the Colonial Bridge Club and participated in the Fulton County and New York state amateur golf tournaments.

He was a member of the Antler's Country Club and the Johnstown Moose Lodge and a former member of the Johnstown Lions Club.

He married Cheryl Christoff Burton on May 1, 1981.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Cherry Conover of Scotia and Molly Hoffman of Redding, Mass.; a stepson, James Longfritz of Johnstown; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Barter and Donnan Funeral Home, Main and Melcher streets. Burial will be in Fort Plain Cemetery.

Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice or to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 48 Pinewood Ave., Saratoga Springs, 12866.
