Eleanor Benson

October 28, 1996
Eleanor S. Benson, 84, of 30 VanWyck St., Gloversville, died Monday at home.

Born Aug. 13, 1912 in Little Falls, she was the daughter of Peter and Agnes Lezniak Slonis. She lived in Gloversville most of her life and attended St. Mary's School in Little Falls.

Mrs. Benson was employed with the NA Taylor Co. in Gloversville for many years.

She was of the Catholic faith.

Mrs. Benson was predeceased by her brother, Walter Slonis, last year.

She married Wallace Ralph Benson on Jan. 22, 1934. He died March 4, 1991.

Survivors include four daughters, Joyce Goodspeed of Spring Hill, Fla.; Joan Ecker of Guilderland; Beverly Sommers of Queensbury; and Sharon Charbonneau of Montreal; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one nephew, and several cousins.

A prayer service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Walrath & Bushouer Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville. Cremation will follow at Parkview Crematory, Schenectady, with interment at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Gloversville.

Private visitation will take place at the convenience of the family. There will be no public calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Sophie Albrecht

October 29, 1996
Mrs. Sophie Elisabeth Albrecht, 96, of Cobleskill, died Tuesday at Eden Park Nursing Home after a long illness.

Born April 7, 1900 in Bremen, Germany, she was the daughter of Havo and Elisabeth Boelton Krieger. She moved to the United States in 1925.

Prior to moving to Cobleskill, she was a longtime resident of Summit. Mrs. Albrecht operated a farm and also worked as a caregiver.

Her husband, Karl Albrecht, whom she married Oct. 28, 1922, died Nov. 8, 1951.

Survivors include a son, Karl Albrecht II of Sprakers, a daughter, Lieselotte Cooper of Cobleskill; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services and burial will be private.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 68 Elm St., Cobleskill.

Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church, Richmondville.

Margaret Flanders

October 29, 1996
Margaret Flanders, 83, of 359 Clayhill Road, St. Johnsville, died Tuesday at her home.

Born Jan. 18, 1913 in Oppenheim, she was the daughter of Clarence and Minnie Cromer Mosher. She was educated in St. Johnsville schools and was a lifelong resident of the St. Johnsville area.

Mrs. Flanders was last employed at Palatine Dye in St. Johnsville.

She was of the Methodist faith.

She was married to Everett E. Flanders. He died on June 14, 1994.

Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth (Betty) Haak of St. Johnsville; a brother, Clyde Mosher of St. Johnsville; a sister, Tina Darling of St. Johnsville; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Alfred Mosher.

Funeral services will be conducted at the convenience of the family.

Burial will be in Brown Cemetery, Town of Oppenheim.

There are no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville.

Jo Anne Arndt

October 26, 1996
Mrs. Jo Anne Theresa Arndt, 64, formerly of Tribes Hill, died Saturday at the East Lake Care Center in Provo, Utah.

Born Aug. 30, 1932 in Pittsfield, Mass., she was the daughter of Stephen and Kathleen Mokowich. She resided in Tribes Hill for most of her life, moving to Utah 15 years ago.

Mrs. Arndt was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

She married Bernard Arndt on Sept. 5, 1953. He died in February, 1968.

Mrs. Arndt is survived by four sons, Larry Arndt and Bruce Arndt, both of Amsterdam; Todd Arndt of San Diego, Calif., and John Arndt of Provo, Utah; two daughters, Debbie Allred of Mesa, Ariz., and Amy Arndt of Pleasant Grove, Utah; a sister, Sonia Romano of Tribes Hill; five grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Mergner Road, Fort Johnson.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Betz Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam.

Nancy Eaker

October 29, 1996
Mrs. Nancy Hazzard Eaker, 77, of West Decker Street, Johnstown, died Tuesday at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam.

Born Jan. 3, 1919 in the Town of Charleston, she was the daughter of Garfield and Margaret Vosburgh Hazzard. Mrs. Eaker was a graduate of Oak Ridge School in Esperance.

She was a glovemaker for Premier Gloves in Fultonville and also worked at the Johnstown Knitting Co., retiring many years ago.

Mrs. Eaker was of the Protestant faith.

She was a charter member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 562 Auxiliary of Fultonville.

Her husband, Burton Eaker, whom she married in 1937, died November of 1944 in World War II.

Survivors include her longtime companion, Andy Beres; two sons, Wayne V. and Ronald E. Hazzard, both of Fultonville; three brothers, Garfield Hazzard of Fonda, Everett Hazzard of Flat Creek and Ward Hazzard of Gloversville; four sisters, Nettie Guyette and Marguarite Lohmyer, both of Amsterdam, Regina Peeler of Fonda and Ella Mae Colby of Fultonville; four grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St., Fultonville. Burial will be in Maple Avenue Cemetery, Fultonville.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 50 Colvin Ave., Albany, 12206 or VFW Auxiliary Post 562 of Fultonville.

Violet Lamphear

October 28, 1996
Mrs. Violet V. Lamphear, 92, of Page Street, Speculator, died Monday afternoon at Nathan Littauer Hospital after a short illness.

Born and educated in Speculator, Mrs. Lamphear was a lifelong village resident.

For more than 40 years, she was a chambermaid in various local establishments.

Mrs. Lamphear was a member of Grace Methodist Church.

Her husband, Edward Lamphear, died in 1979.

Survivors include two sons, Edward Lamphear of Speculator and Thomas Lamphear of Mayfield; three daughters, Laura Page of Speculator, Mary Marsh of Fort Johnson and Barbara Thomas of Lake Pleasant; 16 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Northville Funeral Home, 401 Bridge St., Northville. Burial will be in Fish Mountain Cemetery, Lake Pleasant.

Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Speculator Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Frank Shirnhofer

October 29, 1996
Frank J. Shirnhofer, 70, of Wind Road, Rexford, died Tuesday at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady after being stricken at home.

Born in Avalon, Pa., Mr. Shirnhofer moved to Schenectady in 1938 and lived on Curry Road and Foster Avenue before moving to Rexford in 1953. He attended Draper High School.

During World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy aboard aircraft carriers.

Mr. Shirnhofer was a foreman for LASCO Machine and Welding Co. until retiring in 1988. He then worked with his son at Lakeside Builders in Ballston Lake.

He married Dorothy Barry Shirnhofer on July 1, 1951.

In addition to his wife, survivors include four daughters, Sandra McCullough of Mayfield, Debra Papageorge of Millbrook, Bonnie Coulter of Northville and Patricia Rakvica of Annapolis, Md.; a son, Gary A. Shirnhofer of Ballston Lake; two sisters, Ann Shirnhofer of Schenectady and Margaret Wallimann of Melbourne, Fla.; a brother, John Shirnhofer of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and 10 grandchildren.

Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Road, East Glenville. Burial will be in St. Anthony's Cemetery, Glenville. Calling hours will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday prior to the service at the funeral home.
