Joseph Sweet Jr.

October 13, 1996
Joseph D. Sweet Jr., 67, of 19 S. Judson St., Gloversville, died Sunday at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville following a long illness.

Born May 24, 1929 in Mayfield, he was the on of Joseph D. and Estelle May Rooney Sweet Sr. He resided in Mayfield/Gloversville area all of his life.

He was educated in Mayfield schools.

Mr. Sweet served in the U.S. Navy for several years.

He was employed as a truck driver for several trucking firms in the area. He later owned and operated the former Sweet's Scrap Yard on East Fulton Street Extension in Gloversville for more than 20 years until he sold it. He last was a rural route driver for the Leader Herald in Gloversville for about six years.

He is a member of the Pine Tree Rifle Club, Gloversville.

Mr. Sweet is of the Catholic Faith.

He was predeceased by a son Richard Vogle, a daughter, Margaret Andrest;three sisters, Helen Berry, Mary Bell, and Estelle Brundige.

He married Mina I. Van Valkenburgh on July 4, 1962.

Survivors including his wife, are five sons, Neal I. Sweet, Dean J. Sweet, Paul P. Vogle, Joseph R. Sweet and Steven Sweet, all of Gloversville; seven daughters, Susan I. Sweet of Gloversville, Jean M. Johnson of Little Falls, Mina I. Denton of Mayfield, Mildred S. Fonda, Isabelle I. Durrin, Linda Dopp all of Gloversville; Flora Schomaker of Amsterdam, and a brother, Edward Sweet of Gloversville; many grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and nieces, nephews, cousins and one aunt.

Calling hours are Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Walrath & Bushouer Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville where services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday with Pastor Gary Siegfried of the First Baptist Church, Gloversville, officiating. Burial will be at Freysbush Cemetery, Freysbush.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 440 New Karner Road, Albany 12010.

Leona Trumble

October 14, 1996
Leona Bronk Trumble, 92, of 5780 State Route 29, St. Johnsville, died Monday at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville.

Born Nov. 18, 1903 in Lassellsville, she was the daughter of Frank and Nora Miles Bronk.

Mrs. Trumble was educated in Lassellsville schools and had resided there all of her life. She was a member of the Lassellsville United Methodist Church. She was also an active member and trip coordinator in the Western Fulton County Senior Citizens.

Mrs. Trumble, an elementary school teacher, taught in various school throughout the area for more than 50 years. The greater part of her career, she spent teaching in the Amsterdam School District.

She is survived by one nephew, William Hayes of St. Johnsville and one cousin.

She was predeceased by her sister, Loretta Hayes.

A graveside service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in St. Johnsville Cemetery with the Rev. Michael Yezierski, pastor of Lassellsville United Methodist Church, officiating.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Lassellsville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Yezierski officiating. There are no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Smith-Woody & Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Western Fulton County Senior Citizens.

Margaret Decker

October 13, 1996
Mrs. Margaret R. Decker, 73, of Gifford Valley Road, Giffords Valley, died Sunday at home after being stricken.

Mrs. Decker was born and educated in Weehawken, N.J.

She was a licensed practical nurse at Benedictine Hospital in Kingston before retiring in 1980.

Mrs. Decker lived in the Northville area since 1987.

She was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church in Northville.

Her husband, Francis Decker, whom she married Oct. 29, 1949, died this past August.

Survivors include a son, Michael Decker of Schenectady; a daughter, Margaret Wyant of Alcove; a stepbrother, William Quigley of Saugerties; and four grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday t St. Francis Roman Catholic Church.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Northville.

Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Northville Funeral Home, 401 Bridge St., during which the Rosary Society will conduct a service at 7:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, Gloversville, or the Northeast Association for the Blind.

Verna Sue Downs

There has been a change of venue for services for Miss Verna Sue Downs. A service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Broadalbin Baptist Church, 40 W. Main St.

Arrangements are by the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home.

Mark Ross

October 13, 1996
Mark C. Ross, 37, of Route 30 South, Amsterdam (Town of Florida) died Sunday morning at his home as the result of a fire.

Born in Amsterdam Oct. 18, 1958, he was the son of Nicholas and Carol Rich Ross. He was a 1976 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School and a 1981 graduate of Fulton-Montgomery Community College, Johnstown. He moved to Denver, Colo., and was employed in the computer field. Upon returning to Amsterdam in 1987, he joined the staff of KIS Software as a computer programmer, a position he currently held.

Mr. Ross was a communicant of St. Michael The Archangel Roman Catholic Church.

Survivors include his parents, Nicholas and Carol Rich Ross of Amsterdam; one brother, Richard A. Ross; three sisters, Angela A. Fraczek, Sandra L. Alikonis, and Karen A. Ross, all of Amsterdam; two nieces, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services will be held Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. at the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 at St. Michael's Church.

Interment will be in St. Michael's Cemetery.

Calling hours are today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Florida Volunteer Fire Department in care of Rossi Funeral Home.

Myrtle Sanders

October 14, 1996
Mrs. Myrtle E. Sanders, 92, of Valley Health Services, formerly of Fort Plain, died Monday afternoon at Valley Health Services in Herkimer.

Born in Fort Plain on May 4, 1904, she was the daughter of Grany Conrad and Estella Russ. She attended country schools in Fort Plain.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Sanders was a lifelong area resident and lived at Valley Health Services since 1991.

She was associated with Fort Plain Congregation of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Palatine Bridge.

She married Arnold H. Sanders in September of 1923. He died April 27, 1987. She was predeceased by a son, Robert A. Sanders who died in 1979.

Mrs. Sanders is survived by a daughter, Ruth S. Van Slyke; one grandson, Richard Van Slyke and one great-grandson, Robert A. Van Slyke all of Fort Plain and one nephew of Little Falls.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain.

Jake Crewell will be the overseer.

Calling hours will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Theresa Hidde

October 14, 1996
Theresa Hidde, 68, of Milton Avenue, Amsterdam, died Monday morning at the home of her son, in the Town of Florida, after a long illness.

Born in Amsterdam Oct. 11, 1928, she was a daughter of George and Agnes Riding Farr. She was a lifelong resident and attended local schools. Mrs. Hidde was first employed by Mohasco Corporation and later for the past 25 years, as a housekeeper for St. Mary's Catholic Church Rectory in Amsterdam. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church.

Her husband, Leonard F. Hidde, whom she married Dec. 5, 1952, died on May 21 of this year.

Survivors include two sons, Lawrence D. Hidde of Fort Hunter; and Frederick G. Hidde of the Town of Florida; a sister, Mary Miknavich of Amsterdam; three grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Thursday at 8:30 a.m. at the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 at St. Mary's Church. Interment is in Greenhill Cemetery.

Calling hours are Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Church Development Fund or to Hospice of Amsterdam.
