William Jones
October 14, 1996
William E. Jones, 88, of Rockton Street, Amsterdam, died early Monday morning at the Amsterdam Memorial Hospital, following a long illness.
Born on Sept. 5, 1908, in Amsterdam, he was the son of Louis and Minnie Rust Jones. He was a lifelong area resident.
He was first employed as a draftsman by the American Locomotive Company in Schenectady. Later he owned and operated Bill's Appliance Store on Mannys Corners Road, retiring in 1986.
Mr. Jones served with the United States Navy during World War II.
He was a communicant of the First United Methodist Church of Hagaman.
He was a member of Welcome Lodge No. 829, F. & AM, the Scottish Rite, and the Oriental Shrine Temple of Troy.
He was first married in 1930 to Helen Conrad. She died in 1986. In 1987, he married eleanor M. Olsen. She survives.
He is also survived by a brother, Robert L. Jones of Fonda; two sisters, Gladys Stevens of LaFeria, Texas; and Marilyn France of New Jersey; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Betz Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, with the Rev. John Becker, officiating. The Interment will be in Hagaman Cemetery.
Calling hours will be on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the First United Methodist Church of Hagaman in care of the funeral home.
Winifred Sagendorf

Mrs. Winifred Sagendorf, 77, of Route 162, Charleston Four Corners, died Monday at her residence after a long illness.
Born Oct. 16, 1918 in the Town of Charleston, she was the daughter of Elmer and Lina (Gordon) Humphrey. She had resided on Route 162 since 1962, having previously resided in the Burtonville area.
She attended a one-room schoolhouse in Charleston Four Corners and later graduated from Fultonville High School in 1934. Mrs. Sagendorf owned and operated the former Wayside Diner in Charleston Four Corners in the early 1960s. From 1968 until this past year, she operated, along with her husband, Sagendorff's Junk Shop from their home.
She was married to Bertis Sagendorf on Nov. 23, 1962, and until his death Feb. 15, 1990.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Lois Gruner of Charleston Four Corners; two grandchildren, James Gruner and Sandra Scofield; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and nephews.
A service will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Langan Funeral Home, 21 North Main St., Central Bridge with the Rev. Eric Handel officiating. Burial will follow in the Charleston Four Corners Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice or the American Cancer Society.
Marion Walrath

Mrs. Marion Miller Walrath, 72, of Priddle Point Road, Mayfield, died Sunday at home after a long illness.
Born in Gloversville, Mrs. Walrath was a graduate of Gloversville High School and the Nathan Littauer Hospital School for Nurses in 1945.
She resided in Mayfield since 1977.
For 20 years, Mrs. Walrath was a nurse at Nathan Littauer Hospital and for more than 20 years, a case worker for the Fulton County Department of Social Services, retiring in 1984.
During World War II, she served as a member of the first Nursing Candidate Corps affiliated with Nathan Littauer Hospital.
Survivors include two sons, William C. Walrath of Northville and Donald J. Walrath of Mayfield; a daughter, Suzanne W. Chandler of Wellesley, Mass.; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be private.
Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville.
Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice.
Antoinette Torani
Oct. 12, 1996
Antoinette M. Torani, 75, of Vrooman Avenue, Amsterdam, died Saturday at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born in Schenectady July 25, 1921, the daughter of Anthony and Stella Montarelli Murdico. She was a graduate of the Amsterdam school system and was a lifelong city resident.
Mrs. Torani was a homemaker and a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church. She was a former member of the St. Sophia Society of the church and the Catholic War Veterans Auxiliary.
She was married to Vito Torani Aug. 12, 1945. He died Nov. 20, 1981.
Survivors include two sons, Joseph Torani of Clifton Park and Anthony Torani of Hagaman; a daughter, Sandy Cetnar of Amsterdam; a brother, Joseph Murdico of Lake Worth, Fla.; six grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Boice Funeral Home, 124 Guy Park Ave., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:15 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church.
Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery.
Calling hours are today from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Boice Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Hospital Foundation.

Clara McBride
Oct. 12, 1996
Clara McBride, 90, formerly of Ballston Spa, died Saturday morning at the Mount Loretto Nursing Home, where she had lived.
She was born in Amsterdam July 20, 1906, the daughter of Frank and Magdalena Wojick Opalka, and was educated in the Amsterdam school system.
She was a self-employed beautician in Ballston Spa, retiring in 1978.
Her husband, Harry McBride, whom she married in 1941, died in 1988.
She is survived by two nieces, Delores Piorkowski and Joan Smolen, both of Amsterdam; also great-nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 9 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church.
Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mount Loretto Nursing Home or St. Stanislaus School.
Arrangements are by the Riley Mortuary Inc., 110 Division St., Amsterdam.
Kathleen Barrera
Oct. 12, 1996
Kathleen J. Barrera, 57, of Hewitt Street, Amsterdam, died Saturday morning at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital after being stricken at home.
She was born in Amsterdam Aug. 19, 1939, the daughter of James and Mildred Raila Kavanaugh.
She was a 1958 graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School. She was employed as a home health aide for the Community Health Center of Johnstown until retiring in 1995 due to ill health.
Mrs. Barrera was a communicant of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church.
Her husband, Armando Barrera, whom she married Feb. 21, 1964, died Feb. 2.
She is survived by a son, Armando Barrera of Amsterdam; a daughter, Rene Barrera-Bayes of Amsterdam; two sisters, Patricia Perillo and Cynthia Gatchell, both of Amsterdam; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services are Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. at the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 a.m. at St. Mary's Church.
Interment is in St. Casimir's Cemetery.
Calling hours are Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps or to Hospice of Amsterdam, both in care of the Rossi Funeral Home.
Mary Yerdon
Oct. 11, 1996
Mary A. Yerdon, 95, of the St. Johnsville Nursing Home, died Friday at Little Falls Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born Dec. 7, 1900, in County Cork, Ireland, the daughter of Phillip Cronin and Bridget Donnelly. She was educated in Ireland.
She came to the U.S. in 1926 and lived most of her life in the Fort Plain and Nelliston areas. She worked in the strained foods department of Beech-Nut Packing Co. in Canajoharie for 20 years, retiring in 1965.
Mrs. Yerdon was a communicant of St. James Catholic Church in Fort Plain.
She married Alfred Yerdon Oct. 1, 1927. He died Jan. 6, 1978.
Survivors include two sons, Roger Yerdon of Cornwall on Hudson and Walter Yerdon of Palatine Bridge; two daughters, Patricia Kirkpatrick of Fort Plain and Sheila Oakley of Nelliston; 11 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. She was predeceased by a son, Donald A. Yerdon, who died May 9, 1995.
Funeral services are Monday at 11 a.m. at the Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain, with the Rev. Kenneth Swain officiating.
Burial will be in Fort Plain Cemetery.
A calling hour will take place one hour before the service.
