John Brezino

Oct. 11, 1996
John J. Brezino, 84, of Chapel Place, Amsterdam, died Friday at St. Mary's Hospital after a long illness.

Born in Hudson, Columbia County, June 24, 1912, he was the son of Thomas and Mary Sopko Brezino.

He attended school in Hudson and moved to Amsterdam in 1940. He was employed as a machinist with General Electric Co. in Schenectady, retiring in 1976.

Mr, Brezino was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church.

He married Rose Giamo June 24, 1941. She died Aug. 27, 1993.

Survivors include a son, Robert Brezino of Manchester, N.H.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

A prayer service will be held at 8:30 a.m. Monday at the DeStefano Funeral Home, Route 5S, Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 a.m. at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church.

Interment will follow in St. Michael's Cemetery.

Calling hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps, or to the Leukemia Society of America Inc., Upstate New York Chapter, 85 Watervliet Ave., Albany 12206.

Christine Davis

October 8, 1996
Mrs. Christine Davis, 79, of Ellenville, died Tuesday at Ellenville Community Hospital after a long illness.

Born in Valdosta, Ga., Mrs. Davis moved to Ellenville in 1948.

She was a founding member of Shiloh Baptist Church of Ellenville, where she served in numerous capacities.

Her husband, Harley Davis, died in 1980.

Survivors include three daughters, Valerie Beekman and Tina Macky, both of Amsterdam; and Belinda Davis of Ellenville; two sisters, Virginia McDonald of Deerfield, Fla.; and Rosie Lee Williams of Miami, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

A service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Shiloh Baptist Church, Berme Road, Ellenville.

Burial will be in Pine Bush Cemetery, Kerhonkson.

Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church.

Arrangements are by the Bury-Pine Funeral Home, Ellenville.

Donald Stewart

October 9, 1996
Donald M. Stewart Jr., 64, of Griffis Road, Gloversville, died Wednesday at Nathan Littauer Hospital after a long illness.

Born in Fonda, Mr. Stewart resided in Gloversville most of his life.

From 1952 to 1954, he served with the Army.

For more than 20 years, Mr. Stewart was a draftsman for the General Electric Company in Schenectady until retiring.

Survivors include a son, Donald M. Stewart III of Hope; two brothers, Ralph "Pete" Stewart and William H. Stewart both of Gloversville; a stepdaughter, Kim Williams of Gloversville; his mother, Marion Esther Stewart of Gloversville; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

A service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Walrath & Bushouer Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Fonda.

Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 73 N. Main St., Gloversville, 12078.

Helen Gronkowski

October 9, 1996
Mrs. Helen Underhill Gronkowski, 81, of the Baptist Retirement Center, formerly of Washington Avenue, Scotia, died Wednesday at the home.

Born in Richmondville, Mrs. Gronkowski lived in the Cobleskill area before moving to Schenectady and to Scotia 42 years ago.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Gronkowski was a communicant of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Her husband, John Z. Gronkowski, died in 1990.

Survivors include two daughters, Naomi Watson of West Monroe and Linda Neals of Scotia; two sons, Larry Ahl of Escondido, Calif., and Dennis Ahl of Sprakers; five sisters, Catherine Tilison of Warnerville, Evelyn France of Schoharie, Barbara Lambert and Norma Simmons, both of Cobleskill, and Carol Holloway of Richmondville; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The service will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church Parish Center, MacArthur Drive.

Calling hours will be held today from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Bekkering-Ellis Funeral Home, 1 Mohawk Ave., Scotia.

Burial will be in Park Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Church Building Fund.

Mary Coloney

October 9, 1996
Mary J. Coloney, 92, of 6 Pearl St., Gloversville, died Wednesday at Nathan Littauer Hospital, following a long illness.

Born May 14, 1904 in Hoboken, N.J., she was the daughter of Anthony and Carmella D'Amica Manno.

She resided in Schenectady as a child, and in Gloversville most of her life. Mrs. Coloney lived at the Fulton County Infirmary since April of this year.

She attended Gloversville schools.

Mrs. Coloney was employed at the former Kingsboro Silk Mill, Geraldine Novelty Company; Winig Slipper Company and last at Glenwood Shoe Factory, all in Gloversville. She retired in 1966.

She was of the Catholic faith. Mrs. Coloney was past president of the former Berkshire PTA.

She was pre-deceased by her grandson Timothy Dean Smith in 1993 and a sister, Frances Spina in 1994.

She married Herschel Coloney Sr. on Jan. 30, 1925. He died Jan. 18, 1988.

Survivors include her son, Herschel Coloney Jr., of Gloversville; a daughter, Eleanor M. Smith, also of Gloversville; a sister, Carmella Tausz of Wayne, N.J.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Walrath & Bushouer Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville where services will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. R.W. Williams, chaplain of Mountain Valley Hospice officiating.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 440 New Karner Road, Albany 12205.

Robert Dillon

October 9, 1996
Robert M. Dillon, 86, formerly of Petoff Garden Apartments, died Wednesday morning at the Mount Loretto Nursing Home following a short illness.

Born in Milwaukee, WI., on June 22, 1910, he was the son of Paul J. and Margaret Dillon and was educated in schools there. At one time he lived in the Johnstown area and later moved to California. He returned to this area in 1990.

While in California, Mr. Dillon was employed with the Union Pacific Railroad in Southern California, retiring in 1971. Upon his return to Gloversville, he was employed as a golf pro at the Holland Meadows Golf Course until this spring.

Mr. Dillon was a World War II Navy Veteran.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Broadalbin.

Mr. Dillon was a member of the United Transportation Union No. 1117 of Cleveland, Ohio.

Survivors include a daughter, Michele Furnare of Glen and three grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Stephen's Cemetery in Hagaman with the Rev. Ronald Matuliewicz officiating. There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home Inc., 38 West Main St., Broadalbin.
