Peter Todaro

October 5, 1996
Former Amsterdam resident Peter Todaro, 84, of Clearwater, Fla., died Saturday at his home.

Born in Sicily, he moved from Amsterdam to Clearwater in 1989.

A retiree of General Electric Co., Mr. Todaro was a member of the Light of Christ Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Grace Rogers or Clearwater, Fla; a son, Peter Rogers of Clearwater, Fla.; and two brothers, Anthony Todaro and Charles Todaro, both of Sicily.

Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. today at the Light of Christ Church in Clearwater.

Alta Brewer Jennings

October 6, 1996
Alta Brweer Jennings, 80, of 201 Reservoir Road, Fonda, died Sunday at her home.

Born June 29, 1916, in Patterson, she was the daughter of Thomas C. and Myra Hobby Brewer. She was a graduate of Brewster High School in Brewster. She lived in Carmel until 1944, when she moved to Fitchburg, Mass. until 1948, when she moved to Westboro, Mass. She moved to Fonda in 1979.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Fonda-Fultonville United Methodist Church.

She married Frank C. Jennings on Sept. 22, 1935. He died Oct. 15, 1990.

Survivors include a son Franklin D. Jennings of Fonda; a daughter, Sandra J. Sherwood of Fonda; two sisters, Minnie Paddock of Patterson and Doris Redlon of Towners; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St., Fultonville, with the Rev. Christopher Hamm officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 73 N. Main St., Gloversville, 12078.

Edna Waschak

Oct. 4, 1996
Edna Waschak, 89, formerly of Mathias Avenue, Amsterdam, died Friday evening at the Baptist Retirement Center in Scotia where she had been a resident for the past three years.

She was born May 18, 1907, in Amsterdam, the daughter of Andrew and Victoria Jastrzemski Tarnowski. She was educated locally and was a lifelong area resident.

She was a setter at the former Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Co. and later worked at the Consolidated Novelty Co. before retiring.

Mrs. Waschak was a member of St. Stanislaus Church and its Rosary Society. She was also a member of the Fourth Ward Seniors.

She was married to Bruno Waschak. He died in 1962.

Survivors include a daughter, Geri Ambrozak of Scotia; a sister, Josephine Brunetto of Albany; a brother, William Tarnowski of Amsterdam; a granddaughter; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home, 200 Church St., Amsterdam, followed at 9 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Stanislaus Church.

Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.

Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, during which the Rosary will be recited at 5:15 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Stanislaus School or to the activities program, Baptist Retirement Center, 297 N. Ballston Ave., Scotia 12302.

Bertha Wood

Oct. 4, 1996
Bertha Mattice Wood, 85, of Burtonville Road, died Friday after being stricken at home. She had lived in Burtonville since 1982, after moving there from Schoharie.

She was employed in the cafeteria at Schoharie Central School for many years before retiring.

Mrs. Wood was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses in Johnstown.

Her husband, Frank H. Wood, died Sept. 19, 1982.

Survivors include a daughter, Rheuama K. Freeman of Burtonville; two brothers, Lester Struder of Sedalia, Mo., and Gordon Manchester of Odessa, Texas.

A graveside service will take place Monday at 1 p.m. at the Lutheran Cemetery in Schoharie. There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Esperance Volunteer Fire Department rescue squad, Esperance 12066; or to a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are by the White-Van Buren Funeral Home, 1779 Main St., Delanson.

Harvey Fredericks

Oct. 4, 1996
Harvey G. Fredericks, 85, of Logtown Road Ext., Fultonville, formerly of Route 10, Stone Arabia, died Friday after a brief illness at the Fulton County Infirmary, where he had been a patient since August.

He was born in Marshville June 12, 1911, the son of Herman and Catherine Gramps Fredericks. He attended school in Stone Arabia and was a lifelong area resident.

Mr. Fredericks was a dairy farmer at Velvet Acre Farms in Stone Arabia all his working life, before retiring in 1976.

He was a member of the former Stone Arabia Reformed Church, a member of the Fort Plain Reformed Church and attended Inghams Mills Baptist Church.

His first wife, Leona Lape Fredericks, whom he married Oct. 27, 1934, died Feb. 9, 1985. His second wife, Thelma Collins, whom he married April 26, 1986, died April 15, 1995.

He was also predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Jean Fredericks Phillips, who died Feb. 28, 1968.

Survivors include a sister, Julia Groff of Fort Plain,; two grandchildren, Jeffrey Phillips of Fultonville and Lisa Marie Phillips Johnson of Minneapolis; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral is Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Chapel of Houghtaling and Smith Funeral Home, 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie, with the Rev. Adrian Gray officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda.

Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 126, Canajoharie; or the Fort Plain Volunteer Fire Department, Box 248, Fort Plain 13339.

Dorothy Marotta

Oct. 5, 1996
Dorothy R. Marotta, 79, of 10 Fowler St., Hagaman, died Saturday afternoon at the Edward L. Wilkinson Skilled Nursing Facility following a long illness.

She was born Nov. 26, 1916, in Amsterdam, the daughter of Joseph and Eleanor Brower Marotta. She attended local schools and was a lifelong area resident.

Miss Marotta was employed for several years as a winder at Mohasco Industries before retiring in 1955.

She was a member of St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church in Hagaman.

She is survived by several cousins.

Funeral services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home, 200 Church St., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. at St. Stephen's Church.

Interment will be in St. Stephen's Cemetery.

Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Monday.

William Brooks

Sept. 28, 1996
William Howard Brooks, 82, of Bisbee, Ariz., died unexpectedly Sept. 28.

He was born in Hagaman July 1, 1914, the son of William Henry and Daisy Brown Brooks. While in the area he owned and operated a dairy farm.

In 1957, Mr. Brooks and his family moved to Arizona, where he worked for the Fuller Brush Co., Shamrock Milk Co., Greyhound Bus Co. and Singer sales and repair.

He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman.

Survivors include his wife, Mabel Brooks; a son, Bill Brooks of Bisbee, Ariz.; four daughters, Jean Brooks, Caryl Petty, Cathy Acuna and Cindi Shamp, all of Bisbee; three sisters, Ona Anderson of Bisbee, Winifred Philbrook of Gloversville and Bessie Mole of Avon Park, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Alma Fudger of Bisbee, in 1995.

Funeral services were Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Bisbee, with the Rev. Mary Flanigan-Croteau officiating.

Burial was in Memory Gardens Cemetery.
