Viola Ingersoll

October 2, 1996
Mrs. L. Viola Ingersoll, 90, of the Hillcrest Spring Nursing Home, Amsterdam, died Wednesday at St. Mary's Hospital after a short illness.

Born in Ontario, Canada, Mrs. Ingersoll came to this country in 1926. She studied nursing at the Albany Nursing School and graduated in 1929. She moved to Glen upon her marriage.

Mrs. Ingersoll was a registered nurse at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam, retiring in 1976.

She was a member and past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Deborah Glen Study Club.

Mrs. Ingersoll was a member of the Glen Reformed Church.

Her husband, Edward Ingersoll, whom she married June 1, 1935, died in 1962.

Survivors include two sons, Richard Ingersoll of Syracuse and Alex Ingersoll of San Francisco; two daughters, Nancy Ingersoll of New York City and Doris Ingersoll of Fultonville; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St., Fultonville.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Burial will take place in Maple Avenue Cemetery, Fultonville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Glen Reformed Church of the Fonda-Fultonville Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Anna Davis

October 2, 1996
Mrs. Anna Dybas Davis, 92, of 511 S. W. 11th Ave., Hallandale, Fla., formerly of Amsterdam, died Wednesday at the Hallandale Rehabilitation and Convalescent Center.

Born July 29, 1904, in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary Kucuiak Dybas. Mrs. Davis attended local schools and was a city resident until moving to Florida in 1978.

Mrs. Davis was employed as a setter for the Mohawk Carpet Mills before retiring.

She was a member of St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church.

Mrs. Davis is also a member of the Polish National Alliance.

Her husband, George Davis, died in 1976.

Survivors include a granddaughter, Doreen Fahlman of China Grove, N.C., and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home, 200 Church St., and at 9 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.

Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

Helen Buchner

October 2, 1996
Mrs. Helen L. Buchner, 79, of 91 Wesleyan Ave., Amsterdam, died Wednesday at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility.

Born Jan. 7, 1917 in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of Harold and Bertha Rothen Evenden. She was a lifelong Amsterdam resident.

She graduated in 1935 from the Wilbur H. Lynch High School, and in 1939, she graduated from Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs.

Mrs. Buchner was a homemaker.

Mrs. Buchner worked at the former Oliver's Jewelry Store in Amsterdam during World War II. She was a member of the Amsterdam Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxiliary.

She was of the Roman Catholic faith.

Mrs. Buchner was pre-deceased by a daughter, Patricia Buchner who died in 1958.

She married Lewis L. Buchner on Nov. 30, 1941.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Kathy L. Snyder of Hilton, Monroe County; and four grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Betz Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, with the Rev. Victor Polito officiating.

Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.

Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

George Cervenka

October 1, 1996
George F. Cervenka, 47, president of the Galway Central School District Board of Education, of Jersey Hill Road, Galway, died Tuesday after being stricken while on business in Houston.

Mr. Cervenka was born in Schenectady. He was a graduate of Scotia-Glenville High School and the Rochester Institute of Technology.

At the time of his death, Mr. Cervenka was president of Northeast Cleaning Service, a commercial cleaning and fire restoration service.

Mr. Cervenka served on the board of the Institute of Inspection and Cleaning Restoration and Certification; was senior vice president of the New England Institute of Restoration and Cleaning; and was a member of the Association of Specialists in Cleaning and Restoration.

He served on the board of the West Charlton Cemetery for many years. He was also a member and past president of the Galway Lions Club and served as governor's aide of District 719 Lions Club International.

Mr. Cervenka was a former elder of the West Charlton United Presbyterian Church.

He was a member of the Northeastern Association of the Blind, Albany; and the Galway Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife, Deborah Stonka Cervenka; a son, Peter Pesta of Galway; a daughter, Sherry Pesta of Galway; his mother, Helen Cervenka of West Glenville; a sister, Barbara Cervenka of Galway; and a brother, William Cervenka of Hudson.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at West Charlton United Presbyterian Church, routes 147 and 67.

Burial will be in West Charlton Cemetery.

Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Richard J. Ryan Funeral Home, Sacandaga Road, Route 147, Galway Village.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Galway Lions Club.

Leona Hoffman

September 29, 1996
Leona Jackson Hoffman, 66, of County Route 107, Johnstown, died Sunday morning at home after a long illness.

Born in the Keck Center section of Johnstown, Mrs. Hoffman attended Johnstown schools.

She worked for the Lee Dyeing Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1990.

Mrs. Hoffman was a member of the Women of the Moose; the American Association of Retired Persons; and was a weight reporter for the TOPS organization.

She married Ernest H. Hoffman on Feb. 2, 1952.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, E. William "Bill" Hoffman of Richmond, Va., and Jim Hoffman of Fonda; a daughter, Virginia Saltsman of Fort Plain; two sisters, Thelma Shutter of Palatine Bridge and Marion "Jackie" Smith of Gloversville; nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home, 215 E. Main St., Johnstown.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Fonda.

Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or to the American Diabetes Association.

Francis Larson

September 28, 1996
Francis Larson, 86, formerly of Fifth Street, Scotia, died Saturday at the Glendale Nursing Home after a long illness.

Born Jan. 28, 1910, in Norwich, he was the son of Fred and Carrie Root Larson. Mr. Larson was educated in the Oneonta schools.

He was a glovemaker for the former Premier Glove Co. in Fonda.

Mr. Larson attained the rank of sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II and subsequently served in the Naval Reserve.

He was a member of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Association and the American Legion in Fonda.

Mr. Larson was of the Protestant faith.

He married Edah Larson on March 4, 1939. She died in 1991.

Survivors include a son, Bryon Larson of Fonda; a daughter, Sherry Larson of Schenectady; three granddaughters and a great-granddaughter.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Jackson and Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St., Fultonville, with the Rev. Christopher Hamm, pastor of Fonda-Fultonville United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda.

A calling hour, beginning at 9 a.m., will precede the service at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Amsterdam, Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam.
