Guiseppe "Pepe" Terricola
August 15, 1996
Guiseppe Terricola, 94, of 5049 Route 29, St. Johnsville, died Thursday at Albany Medical Center.
Born July 25, 1902, in Maenza, Italy, he was the son of Costantino and Vincenza (Porta) Terricola. He was educated in Italy and moved to the St. Johnsville area in 1920.
Mr. Terricola was a member of St. Patrick's Church in St. Johnsville.
He married Ausilia Palladine in September of 1928. She died in April, 1954.
Survivors include two sons, Rolando Terricola of Mohawk and Carl Terricola of St. Johnsville; two daughters, Vincenza Terricola of Ilion and Nancy Raffle of Frankfort; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Smith-Woody & Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville, and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Pascal Iannotti.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Shirley Carnwath
August 15, 1996
Shirley Howlan Carnwath, 74, of Fort Hunter, died Thursday morning at St. Mary's Hospital.
Born Feb. 18, 1922, in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of Frank A. and Lillian Schwartz Howlan. Mrs. Carnwath attended local schools and was a 1940 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School. She attended Pennsylvania State University and received certificates in counseling from Rutgers University and the University of Delaware.
She was assistant director of the Hunterdon Council on Alcoholism and was a family counselor and lecturer at Hunterdon Medical Center, Hunterdon, N.J.; director of the Drug and Alcohol Unit at the Carrier Clinic, Belmede N.J.; director of alcoholism services, Warminster General Hospital, Warminster Pa.; and most recently, was an alcoholism counselor at Med Park Hospital, Warsaw, Ind.
Mrs. Carnwath also owned the former Yarn and Eye, a needlepoint store in Doylestown, Pa.
Mrs. Carnwath was a member of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Indiana Associations of Drug and Alcoholism Counselors; the National Association of Alcoholism Counselors and also volunteered with many civic organizations including Abington Memorial Hospital Auxiliary's June Fete.
She married Samuel W. Carnwath in 1945. He died in 1979.
Survivors include four sons, Samuel W. Carnwath Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; Thomas H. Carnwath of Wilmington, De.; Robert Carnwath II of Hilton Head, S.C.; Matthew W. Carnwath of Roann, Ind.; two daughters, Speak Carnwath of Oakland, Ca.; and Kate C. Hopkins of Baldwin, Md.; one sister, Mary Ann Riley of Amsterdam; five grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. Carnwath was predeceased by one brother, Francis "Dutch" Howlan.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Church.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Whitemarsh Memorial Park, Prospectville, Pa.
Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Riley Mortuary Inc., 110 Division St., Amsterdam.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Institute, Upper Church Street, Amsterdam.
Stephen "Steve" Kubas
August 15, 1996
Stephen A. Kubas, 83, of Edson Street, Amsterdam, died Thursday evening at St. Mary's Hospital following a short illness.
Born Nov. 12, 1912, in Amsterdam, he was the son of Frank and Edna Golej Kubas and was a lifelong city resident.
He was employed by Mohasco Industries for many years before retiring in 1978. He was a member of St. Stanislaus Church and the St. Michael the Archangel Society of the church. He was also a member of the Mohasco Quarter Century Club.
He was predeceased by a son, Raymond Kubas, who died Aug. 9, 1973.
He married the former Helen Rogala on May 2, 1936.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two grandchildren, John and Lynne Kubas, both of Amsterdam; one sister, Betty Olzenski of Amsterdam, and nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home, 200 Church St., followed at 9 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Stanislaus Church. Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Stanislaus Church.
Edward Bruso
August 14, 1996
Edward N. Bruso, 67, of Old Page Road, Speculator, died Wednesday at home after being stricken.
Born in Winchester, Vt., Mr. Bruso was educated in Speculator and lived most of his life there.
He was a truck driver and laborer, lastly for Coleco Industries in Mayfield until the company closed.
Survivors include a sister, Marjorie Wilkinson of Albany.
Services will be private. Burial will take place Monday in Glebeview Cemetery, South Londonderry, Vt.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Speculator Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
Arrangements are by the Northville Funeral Home.
Dorothy Engle
August 15, 1996
Mrs. Dorothy Harr Engle, 76, of Atco, N.J., formerly of Amsterdam and Schenectady, died Thursday at West Jersey Hospital in Berlin.
Born in Amsterdam, Mrs. Engle moved to Schenectady after World War II. She lived in Atco for the past four years.
Mrs. Engle was a homemaker.
She was the widow of Howard E. Engle.
Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn Pinti of Haddonfield, and Deborah Albrecht of Marlton; and three grandchildren.
Services will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 600 White Horse Pike, Audubon, N.J. 08106.
Arrangements are by the Bradley Funeral Home, Marlton.
Glenn "Mitch" Mitchell
August 16, 1996
Glenn B. Mitchell, 70, of Church St., Canajoharie, died Friday at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady after a short illness.
Born Feb. 25, 1926, in the Town of Stark, he was the son of Charles W. Mitchell and Iva Smith. He was educated in the Canajoharie schools.
Mr. Mitchell was employed at Johnstone's Florist in Palatine Bridge for many years and later he was employed by the Village of Canajoharie in the Public Works Department for many years before retiring.
Mr. Mitchell was a lifelong area resident.
He was a veteran of the U.S. army, serving during World War II and the Korean Conflict.
He was a member of the Canajoharie United Methodist Church.
Mr. Mitchell was a lifelong member of the American Legion Smith Schultz Post 222 of Canajoharie and was also past commander of the post, member of the 49-8 Club of the American Legion, a member of the Last Man Club of the Smith Schultz Post, member and past commander of the Montgomery County American Legion. He was also a lifelong member of the Mohawk Valley VFW Post 3275 of Fort Plain, member of the Polish American Veterans in Amsterdam, member of the Little Falls Commandry KT No. 26, member of the Voyager Militaire No. 814 of Amsterdam, member of the Hamilton Lodge F & AM No. 79, member of the Hiram Union Chapter No. 53 of Canajoharie, member of the Ziyara Temple A-A-O-N-M-S of Utica, member of the Johnstown Council No. 72 R & SM, member of the Canajoharie-Fort Plain B.P.O.E. No. 2621, member of the Boiling Pot Aerie No. 3846 Fraternal Order of the Eagles in Canajoharie, and a board member of the Prospect Hill Cemetery Association in Canajoharie.
Survivors include a sister, Gladys Polzel of Klamath Falls, Ore. and several nieces and one nephew.
Funeral services were scheduled to be conducted at 11 a.m. today at the Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie, with the Rev. Camillus Mourice officiating.
Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Canajoharie, where the VFW Memorial Squad will conduct services.

Frank Jewell
August 18, 1996
Frank H. Jewell, 92, of Route 10, Marshville, Town of Canajoharie, died Sunday at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam after a short illness.
Born April 29, 1904 in Charlettetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada, he was the son of John Jewell and Charlotte Vickerson.
He came to the United States in 1923 and became a U.S. citizen in 1941. He was educated in East Wiltshire School in Prince Edward Island.
Mr. Jewell was a dairy farmer on Jewell Road in Marshville for more than 30 years, retiring in 1973. After retiring, he sold shoes from his home. Mr. Jewell lived in Marshville for 75 years.
He was of the Protestant faith.
Mr. Jewell was a former member and gate keeper of the Seeber's Lane Grange for 42 years.
He married Ethel L. Young on Nov. 6, 1929 in Stone Arabia.
In addition to his wife of Marshville, he is survived by two sons, Daniel H. Jewell of Marshville, and Leon J. Jewell of Fort Plain; two daughters, J. Irma Lamphere of Palatine Bridge and Elinor Groeger of Fayetteville; 22 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by two sons, Milton Jewell and Frances Jewell and also daughters, Frances Canup and Charlotte J. Mowrey who died Friday.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie, with the Rev. Kenneth Dingman will officiate.
Burial will take place in Ames Cemetery.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice in memory of Mr. Jewell.
