Edith Albers

July 19, 1996
Edith F. (Newkirk) Albers, 83, of Lent Court, Rotterdam, died Friday at Ellis Hospital, Schenectady, after a short illness.

She was born in Scotch Bush and lived in the Schenectady County area for more than 50 years.

For more than 15 years she was a school bus driver for the Scotia-Glenville School District, retiring in 1975.

Mrs. Albers was a member of the Calvary Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Schenectady and its choir, and was a former Sunday school teacher. She also served on the church's ministry at the Baptist Retirement Center in Scotia.

Her husband, Kenneth Albers, whom she married Aug. 3, 1934, died in 1987.

Survivors include two sons, David J. Albers of Rochester and Lynnwood E. Albers of Vallejo, Calif.; a daughter, Donna G. Horning of Schenectady; two brothers, Hazlett Newkirk of Rome and Frank Newkirk of Fort Hunter; two sisters, Arlene Hodges and Edna LaRocco, both of Schenectady; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are 10 a.m. Monday at Calvary Orthodox Presbyterian Church, Rugby Road and Glenwood Boulevard, Schenectady.

Burial will be in Woestina Reformed Cemetery, Rotterdam Junction.

Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Bond Funeral Home, Broadway and Guilderland Avenue, Schenectady.

Elsa Jeffers

July 20, 1996
Elsa Mae Jeffers, 86, a former Broadalbin resident, died Saturday morning at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville, after a long illness.

She was born March 25, 1910, in Mayfield, the daughter of Arch and Minnie Granger VanBuren.

She lived in Broadalbin most of her life. Mrs. Jeffers also wintered in California and Florida years ago. She lived at Pine View Commons in Johnstown before entering the Fulton County Infirmary for several years.

Mrs. Jeffers was a school teacher in Hagaman, Fort Hunter and Fishouse schools, and retired in 1972 from the Meco School in Gloversville after 20 years of service.

She was a member of the Broadalbin Baptist Church.

Her husband, LaVerne Jeffers, died in 1979.

She is survived by a daughter, Sandra Jeffers of Santee, Calif.; a brother, Donald VanBuren of Holly Hills, Fla.; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a brother, Irwin VanBuren, and five sisters, Mildred Kissinger, Lillian Sawyer, Sara Crannell, Emma VanBuren and Irene Merry.

Funeral services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Broadalbin Baptist Church, West Main Street, Broadalbin, with the Rev. Matthew Collins officiating.

Calling hours are 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Jeffords Chapel, 85 W. Main St., Broadalbin.

Interment will be in Broadalbin Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Broadalbin Baptist Church.

Kostij Stefiniv

July 20, 1996
Kostij "Kosty" Stefiniv, 80, of Fisher Road, Fultonville, died Saturday at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville, after a long illness.

He was born June 6, 1916, in Ukraine and was educated there.

He came to the U.S. from Ukraine in 1950 and began living with the Yurkewecz family in the Town of Glen.

He worked on the family's Glenridge Farm in Glen as a herdsman and farmer, retiring in 1992 after 40 years.

He was a member of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Church in Amsterdam.

Survivors include his American family, Eugene and Katherine Yurkewecz of Glen; the family's four daughters, Carol J. Parenti of St. Cloud, Fla., Judith C. Murray of Fultonville, Cynthia J. Doherty of Broadalbin and Sharen K. Schnell of Westerville, Ohio; and the family's son, E. Kenneth Yurkewecz of Clifton Park.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 9 a.m. at St. Nicholas Cemetery, Amsterdam. There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church.

Arrangements are by the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St. Fultonville.

Emery Sheridan

July 18, 1996
Emery E. Sheridan, 72, of Midline Road, Amsterdam, died Thursday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.

Born in Amsterdam June 14, 1924, the son of Emery and Elizabeth Wallin Sheridan, he was a lifelong resident.

Mr. Sheridan was educated in the Amsterdam School System. He was employed by the Federal Government with security at the Voorheesville Supply Depot, and the Leo W. O'Brien Federal Building in Albany. He retired in 1982.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and served in Europe as a tank gunman from 1943 to 1946.

Mr. Sheridan was of the Catholic Faith.

He was a former member of the Elks Lodge 101, and a member of the Arthur Carter Municipal Golf Course.

Survivors include his wife, the former Sarah Lee Sheridan, whom he married in 1975; one brother, Wallin J. Sheridan of Fonda; one sister, Virginia Litwa of Amsterdam; three step-children, Ernest Perretta of Okinawa, Japan; David Perretta of Nashville, Tenn., and Mary Lou Holloway of Albany; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins and several step-grandchildren.

Private services will be held Saturday at the Riley Mortuary Inc., 110 Division St., with Dr. Thomas Mithen officiating.

Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Richard Murray

July 17, 1996
Richard "Dick" R. Murray, 69, of Bossi Lane, Guilderland, died Wednesday at home.

Born in Whitesboro on June 20, 1927, he was the son of Sydney and Anna Murray. He attended city schools and after high school he went into the Army. He served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947.

He graduated from RPI in Troy in 1952, with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. During his hears at RPI he played hockey. He received his master's degree in mechanics in 1955 while working full time with the Rensselaer Health Department and then Keis & Holroyd Engineering Firm in Troy. In 1953 he went with the State Office of General Services and in 1964 to the New York State University central office, where he stayed as director of Engineering Services until his retirement in 1991. He received his professional engineering license in 1957.

He served as Town of Guilderland Zoning Board of Appeals Chairman from 1981 to 1983; Town of Guilderland Planning Board member, from 1977 to 1980; Town of Guilderland Youth Commission member, 1977 to 1980; Fort Hunter Water District Board member, 1984 to present; Guilderland Town Board, 1984 to present; Town of Guilderland Republican Committee, 1973 to present; Guilderland Central School District Continuing Ed. Advisory Committee, from 1979 to present; Western Turnpike Rescue Squad member, 1980 to 1983; a member of VFW Post No. 5294; Guilderland Elks No. 2480; a member of Lynnwood Reformed Church and its part-time Choir, is a past Decon and a member of Church's Mens Brotherhood, RPI's Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity and past president of its Housing Association (president for 25 years); Tri-City Youth Hockey in Troy ; and assistant Scout Master, Boy Scouts of America for eight years in Guilderland.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Marie Heiser Murray; one son, James Murray of Rotterdam; one daughter, Jane Pfaffenbach of Rotterdam; one brother, Robert Murray of Amsterdam; two sisters, Jean Graff of Amsterdam; and Mary Ellen Dixon of Hanlon, Iowa and four grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Lynnwood Reformed Church, Carmen Road.

Calling hours are Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 5216 Western Turnpike, Guilderland.

Interment is in Fairview Cemetery, Amsterdam.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Guilderland Animal Hospital, Richard R. Murray Animal Shelder Fund, c/o Dr. Michael Cosler, RD2, McCormack Corners, Altamont, 12009.

Anna Jarosik

July 17, 1996
Mrs. Anna Jarosik, 90, of Sharon Springs, died Wednesday at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, after a short illness.

Mrs. Jarosik was born in Vienna, Austria. She fled to Lincoln, England, during World War II. She encountered difficulty obtaining a visa to enter the United States and wrote for help from Eleanor Roosevelt, who assisted her.

A resident of Sharon Springs for the past five years, she had previously lived at the Isabella House in Manhattan.

She earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Columbia University. She was a former teacher at the National Council of Jewish Women Day Care Center in Brooklyn.

She was the widow of Joseph "Pepe" Jarosik.

Survivors include a niece, Eva Moseley of Cambridge, Mass., a nephew, Paul Steiner-Cotati of California and her caregivers, Gloria and Fred Santillo of Sharon Springs.

A private memorial service will be held.

There are no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Lappeus Funeral Home.

Bob Lubin Ekstein

July 17, 1996
Bob Lubin Ekstein, 83, of 6817 E. Pointe Pine St., Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., formerly of Gloversville, died Wednesday at St. Mary's Hospital, West Palm Beach, from injuries sustained in an auto/pedestrian accident last week.

Born in St. Louis, Mr. Ekstein lived most of his life in Gloversville. He was a certified public accountant before retiring in 1986 and moving to Florida.

He was a member of Knesseth Israel Synagogue in Gloversville.

Mr. Ekstein was the widower of his first wife Eisenberg Ekstein.

Survivors include his wife, Esther Korman Ekstein, three sons, Alan R. Ekstein of Delmar, and Myron and Carl Ekstein, both of New York City; two stepsons, Howard Korman of Jacksonville, Fla., and Steven Korman of Milford, Conn.; a stepdaughter, Reyna Horner of Jacksonville; two sisters, Mary Silverman of New York City and Naomi Ekstein of Florida; and six grandchildren.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Ave.

Burial will be in Beth Emeth Cemetery, Turner Lane, Loudonville.

Memorial contributions may be made to Knesseth Israel Synagogue, 84 E. Fulton St., Gloversville, 12078.
