Mary Hall

December 31, 1996
Mary E. Hall, 87, of 41 First Ave., Broadalbin, died Tuesday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient for three weeks.

Born Sept. 1, 1909 in Austria-Hungary, she was the daughter of George and Katherine Tanchak Stanton and came to the United States in 1910, settling in Minerva.

She was educated in schools there and later moved to Long Island, where she lived until 1958. She then moved to the Broadalbin area where she had since resided.

Mrs. Hall was employed in the tape department at the former MCA of Gloversville, retiring in 1971.

She was of the Episcopalian faith.

She married Alfred W. Hall on Aug. 21, 1931. He died Sept. 30, 1969.

Mrs. Hall was predeceased by two sons, Charles Hall, who died in 1964 and George Hall, who died in 1969.

Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Marion of Sequim, Wash.; two sisters, Rose Benedict of Broadalbin and Alice Paul of Lyons, N.J.; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted in the spring at the Union Mills Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Broadalbin Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Arrangements are by the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home Inc., Broadalbin.

Kenneth Bahn

January 1, 1997
Kenneth W. Bahn, 88, of Whitney Drive, Niskayuna, a former resident of Amsterdam, died Wednesday at St. Clare's Hospital in Schenectady.

Born on March 14, 1908 in Amsterdam, he was the son of Charles and Grace Borfell Bahn.

He resided in Amsterdam until 1963, when he moved to Niskayuna.

Mr. Bahn and his wife owned and operated Bahn's Men's Shop in Amsterdam from 1934 until 1952.

He was then employed at the former Bond's Clothing Store in Schenectady until retiring in 1975.

He was a communicant of the Niskayuna Reformed Church.

He married the former Selma (Sal) Bernhardt on Aug. 24, 1929.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Phyllis B. Mead of Rexford; four grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A private funeral service will be conducted at the convenience of the family at the Betz Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

John Murphy

December 29, 1996
John F. Murphy, 78, of County Route 107, Fort Johnson, died Sunday at East Texas Medical Center after being stricken while on vacation.

Born June 15, 1918 in West Hartford, Conn., he was educated there. He was the son of James P. and Mary E. Clark Murphy.

Mr. Murphy served with the Merchant Marine.

He was employed as a field quality control inspector in the Turbine Engine Department for Westinghouse Electric, New England Division until his retirement. At one time he also worked on the Erie Canal.

Mr. Murphy was of the Catholic faith.

He is survived by his wife Joyce Taylor Murphy, a daughter, Colleen Brancato of Johnstown; three sons, John F. Murphy Jr. of Florida, Robert B. Murphy of Connecticut and Dennis P. Murphy of Houston, Texas; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. today at the A. G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 E. Main St., Johnstown, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony's Church 4 Nicholas St., Johnstown.

Calling hours were Wednesday.

Burial will be in the spring at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Johnstown.

Vincent "Jimmy" DelCostello

December 31, 1996
Vincent DelCostello, 83, of Austin Street, Amsterdam, died Tuesday morning at his home after being stricken.

Born Feb. 16, 1913 in Amsterdam, he was a son of Michael and Serafina Frescura DelCostello.

He was educated locally and lived here all his life.

For many years, he was employed by the General Electric Co. in Schenectady as a forklift operator, retiring in 1978.

Mr. DelCostello also ran the former Jim's Lucheonette on Market Street for several years.

He was a communicant of St. Michael The Archangel Roman Catholic Church.

He was a member of several senior citizen's groups, including St. Casimir's Seniors, Mount Carmel Seniors, the Hi-Lo Seniors, and the United Presbyterian Seniors.

His wife, the former Eleanor DiCaprio, died in April of 1981.

Survivors include his companion of many years, Josie Sokalski of Amsterdam; two sons, Michael W. and Richard A. DelCostello both of Amsterdam; two daughters, Linda Nasadoski and Michele Harpp both of Amsterdam; four brothers, Michael DelCostello of Schenectady, Herman DelCostello of Gloversville, Albert and Carmen DelCostello both of Amsterdam; two sisters, Lena DelCostello and Antionette DaBiere both of Amsterdam; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 8:30 a.m. Friday at the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 a.m. at St. Michael The Archangel Church. Interment is in St. Michael's Cemetery.

Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael's Memorial Fund.

James Kroup

January 2, 1997
James P. Kroup, 77, of Highland Avenue, Fort Johnson, died this morning at home following a long illness.

Arrangements for a Monday funeral will be announced by the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, Amsterdam.

Vera Shuttleworth

December 30, 1996
Vera F. Shuttleworth, 82, of Seven Hills Road, Northville, died Monday morning at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville after a long illness.

Born and educated in Amsterdam, Mrs. Shuttleworth was a resident of Northville since 1976.

She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Robert A. Shuttleworth, died in 1988.

Survivors include a son, Robert F. Shuttleworth of Northville; a daughter, Anne Magnifico of Woodmere; a brother, James Egan of Amsterdam; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be private. Burial will be in the spring in the Hagaman Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are by the Northville Funeral Home.

Andrew Werner

January 2, 1997
Andrew Frank Werner, 79, of Douglas Street, Fort Plain, died Thursday at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam after being stricken at home.

Born in Albany on Oct. 6, 1917, he was the son of Andrew Frank Werner and Cora Godfrey. He graduated from Wilbur Lynch High School in Amsterdam.

Mr. Werner was employed at the Montgomery County Office Building in Fonda for many years before retiring.

He lived in Fort Plain for 46 years. Prior to that he resided in Amsterdam.

Mr. Werner was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Freysbush.

He was also a member of VFW Post 3275 of Fort Plain and also the Memorial Squad.

He married Katherine Peeler on Aug. 8, 1953 in Pennsylvania.

Survivors including his wife, are three daughters, Gayle Van Avery of Naples, Maine; Lucinda Listing of Saratoga, and Debra Voght of Fort Plain; one sister, Dorothy Howe of Clinton, N.Y., two nieces, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at the Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain.

The Rev. Kenneth Dingman will officiate.

Burial will be in Albany Rural Cemetery in Menands.

Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

The VFW Post 3275 will conduct a service at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, Route 163, Fort Plain, or to the VFW Memorial Squad, River Street, Fort Plain, 13339.
