Edith Snyder
February 13, 1997
Edith C. Snyder, 85, formerly of 69 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, died Thursday at Montgomery Meadows.
Born Sept. 2, 1911, in Rifton, she was the daughter of Harvey and Viola Tappan Hollister.
She was a manager for Brier's Leather in Amsterdam for many years. Mrs. Snyder was a member of the Hagaman Senior Citizens.
Her husband, Frank Snyder, died in 1979.
Survivors include her sister, Mildred Surento of Amsterdam; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are 2 p.m. Monday at the Richard J. Ryan Funeral Home, Sacandaga Road, (Route 147), Galway.
Calling hours are noon to 2 p.m. on Monday prior to the service.
Spring interment will take place in Greenhill Cemetery, Amsterdam.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hagaman Volunteer Fire Department.
Vencenza Giovannone

Vincenza "Jennie" Iacovangelo Giovannone, 97, of the St. Johnsville Nursing Home, formerly of Division Street, Fort Plain, died Friday at the nursing home after a long illness.
Born Feb. 26, 1899 in Rodi Gargano, Italy, she was the daughter of Antonio Iacovangelo and Michelina DeMeo. She was educated in Italy and the United States after she arrived in 1911.
Mrs. Giovannone was employed as a machine operator at the Luxuray Knitting Mill in Fort Plain for 50 years before retiring in 1965. She also worked part-time at the former Freebold Nursing Home in Fort Plain. She also performed private duty home care.
She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Fort Plain. She was a member of the Fort Plain-Nelliston Senior Citizens and the Altar Rosary Society.
Survivors include a son, Emerson Giovannone of Palatine Bridge; three daughters, Gilda Mucha of Hendersonville, N.C., Gloria Friello of Danbury, Conn., and Doris Dutcher of Fort Plain; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Giovannone was predeceased by two stepsons, Anselmo Giovannone and John Giovannone.
There will be no calling hours.
A memorial mass will be conducted 2 p.m. March 7 at St. James Catholic Church, Fort Plain, with the Rev. Kenneth Swain officiating.
Burial will be in Fort Plain Cemetery in the spring.

Florence Michalski
February 14, 1997
Florence V. Michalski, 75, of Amsterdam, died Friday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.
Born Feb. 22, 1921 in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of Joseph and Nellie Barszcz Bik. She was educated in local schools and was a 1937 graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School.
Mrs. Michalski worked at one time for Mohasco Industries. Later, she was a homemaker. She then was employed by St. Mary's Hospital as a keypunch operator until retiring in February 1983.
She was a member of the Church of St. John the Baptist.
Her husband, Joseph M. Michalski, whom she married May 17, 1953, died Dec. 31, 1991.
Survivors include two sons, David Michalski of Galway and Robert Michalski of Amsterdam; a sister, Ernestine Krawczyk of Amsterdam; two aunts, Bernice Barszcz and Adeline Barszcz, both of Amsterdam; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by a brother, Leonard Bik, who died in 1983.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Guzielek-Pomykaj Funeral Home, 13 Belmont Place, Amsterdam.
Services will be conducted 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Michalski's memory to the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
Joseph Foltman
February 14, 1997
Mr. Joseph Foltman, 84, of San Pedro, Calif, formerly of Amsterdam, died Friday.
Born Feb. 26, 1912 in Amsterdam, he was a son of Bronislaus and Anna Raczkowaka Foltman.
Mr. Foltman served in the U.S. Army as a Staff Segeant Machinist and was discharged in 1946.
He was employed as a civil servant for the federal government for 35 years before retiring in 1979.
Survivors include three sons, Jeff Foltman of San Pedro, Calif., Paul Foltman of Jacksonville, Ore., and Steve Foltman of Olympia, Wash.; three sisters, Cecelia Wiatrowski of Angola, Marion Wasileski of Auburn, and Harriet Thackrah of Amsterdam; five brothers, Sylvester Foltman of Amsterdam, Dennis Foltman of Escanaba, Mich. and Arizona, William Foltman of Schenectady, Barney Foltman of Rye, and Anthony Foltman of Bradenton, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a sister, Helen Foltman and a brother, Felecian Foltman.
There will be a funeral service at Mary Star of the Sea Church in San Pedro, Calif. A private, graveside service will be conducted at the convenience of the family at St. John's Cemetery, Amsterdam.
Arrangements are by the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home, 200 Church St., Amsterdam.
Gladys Martin
February 15, 1997
Gladys M. Martin, 95, of Amsterdam, died Saturday evening at Montgomery Meadows where she lived since 1988.
Born in Amsterdam Feb. 10, 1902, she was the daughter of Lyle and William Waite Burtt.
Mrs. Martin was educated in the Amsterdam school system and was employed by Johnstown Knitting Mills for more than 40 years until her retirement in 1973.
She was of the Roman Catholic faith.
Her husband, Bernard T. Martin, whom she married on June 19, 1918, died in 1954.
Survivors include a daughter, Margaret E. Davis of Johnstown; three sisters, Marion Van Duesen and Florence Clairmont, both of Amsterdam, and Catherine Golding, of Tucson, Ariz.; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.
Mrs. Martin was predeceased by a son, James Martin, and a daughter, Dorothy L. Hurley.
Funeral services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Riley Mortuary Inc., 110 Division St., Amsterdam, with the Rev. James Gulley, officiating.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Fort Johnson.
Calling hours are 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.

John Favorita Sr.
February 13, 1997
John V. Favorita Sr., 84, of 315 Tree Haven Blvd., Hendersonville, N.C., died Thursday at Pardee Memorial Hospital following a short illness.
He was a native of Brooklyn and a prior resident of Garden City, Long Island, and had lived in Henderson County for the last 15 years.
He was married to Josephine Favorita, who died in 1996.
Mr. Favorita was a retired federal employee and a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II and Korea; a member of the Air Force Association, and a member of the Marconi Lodge.
He is survived by his son, John V. Favorita Jr. of Canton, Ill.; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church by Father Alfonso D. Pagliara.
Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, N.C.
Calling hours were Sunday at the Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Home, Hendersonville, N.C., with a vigil service at 7:30 p.m.

Leonina Cochi

Leonina Cochi, 99, of the St. Johnsville Nursing Home, formerly of 88 E. Main St., St. Johnsville, died Saturday at the nursing home.
She was born May 29, 1897, in Maenza, Italy, the daughter of Guy and Louisa Forcincila. She was educated in her native land, and moved to the St. Johnsville area in 1913.
She married Carlo Cochi on Sept. 2, 1917, in St. Johnsville. He died in June 1940.
For more than 30 years, Mrs. Cochi was owner and operator of Cochi's Gas and Grocery Store in St. Johnsville
Mrs. Cochi was a member of St. Patrick's Church and its Rosary Society. She was also a member of St. Johnsville Senior Citizens.
Survivors include two sons, Oscar Cochi of Rochester and Carlo Cochi of New Hartford; a daughter, Laura Fontana of St. Johnsville; 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was predeceased by a grandson, Robbie Cochi.
Funeral services are 8:45 a.m. Tuesday at the Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville, and at 9:15 a.m. from St. Patrick's Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Pascal Iannotti, pastor.
Burial will be in St. Johnsville Cemetery in the spring.
Calling hours are today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
