Dorothy Douglas
February 28, 1997
Mrs. Dorothy M. Douglas, 80, of Nestle Road, Fort Plain, died Friday evening at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, after a long illness.
Born July 12, 1916 in the Town of Minden, she was the daughter of Lester and Ida Swart Rockefeller. She was educated in Fort Plain schools.
Mrs. Douglas worked for the Montgomery County Office for the Aging as an outreach worker. She also served as a home health aid and worked at the former Ben Franklin Five & Dime Store in Fort Plain. She lastly was employed at the Fort Plain Senior Center as director.
She was a lifelong area resident.
Mrs. Douglas was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Freysbush. She was a member of St. John's Ladies Aid. She was a foster parent for the Montgomery County Social Services Department.
She was a member of the Advisory Council of the Fulmont Neighborhood Center in Fort Plain and an honorary member of the Fulmont Development Agency in Fonda. She was a past member of the Fort Plain Firemen's Ladies Auxiliary and was a former dispatcher for Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Services.
Clayton Douglas, whom she married Sept. 26, 1934, died May 11, 1979.
Survivors include two daughters, Veda M. Douglas of Fort Plain and Virginia M. Herringshaw of Herkimer; two sons, Roger L. Douglas and Carl F. Douglas of Fort Plain; two sisters, De Etta Helmer of Little Falls and Irene March of Florida; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Deborah Douglas, who died April 7, 1986.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating.
Spring burial will be in Freysbush Cemetery.

Ethel Carpenter
February 28, 1997
Ethel Clarinda Carpenter, 68, of Brainard Road, Enfield, Conn., died Friday evening at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Stafford, Conn.
Born Sept. 8, 1928 in Gloversville, she was the daughter of James and Helen Butler Quant. She moved to Connecticut and lived there for the past three years.
Mrs. Carpenter was employed as a clerk for Key Fleet Bank.
She was a member of the Manchester Baptist Church and Court Mayflower, Order of the Eastern Star in Gloversville.
Survivors include a son, Charles K. Carpenter of Enfield, Conn.; three daughters, Carol A. Carmona, Barbara J. Cintron and Robin L. Berg, all of Amsterdam; two brothers, James Quant of Schenectady and Richard Quant of Mayfield; three sisters, Madeline Simonson of Mayfield, and Jeannette St. Peters and Patricia Knapp, both of Gloversville; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, Amsterdam.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Interment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville, in the spring.
William Lampkin
March 1, 1997
William M. Lampkin, 40, of Route 30, died suddenly early Saturday morning at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.
Born May 14, 1956 in Amsterdam, he was the son of Francis and Josephine Sisaro Lampkin. He was a 1974 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School.
Mr. Lampkin was employed by The Recorder for a time, as well as by KeyMark in Fonda and Broadalbin Manufacturing and High-Grade Welding. For the past 10 years, he was employed as a forklift operator for Sonoco Paper Products in Amsterdam. He also was a self-employed carpenter.
He was a prestigious member of the Loyal Order of the Moose # 1185 in Johnstown. He also was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, the former Linda Drozinski, whom he married Oct. 28, 1989; a daughter, Jamie Lynn Lampkin at home; a son, William Lampkin Jr., also at home; two stepsons, Joseph S. Quill of Amsterdam and Edward M. Quill of Perth; four brothers, Richard Lampkin, Frank Lampkin Jr. and Scott Lampkin, all of Amsterdam, and Terrance Lampkin of Gloversville; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, Amsterdam.
Services will be 9:15 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to an education fund being established for his children through the funeral home.
John Sargalis
February 28, 1997
John Sargalis, 82, of Stoner Trail Road, Johnstown, died Friday evening at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville, after a long illness.
Born June 7, 1914 in Frankfort, he was the son of John and Anna Juskevicius Sargalis.
Mr. Sargalis was first employed on the family farm in Starkville. For the past 48 years, he was the owner and operator of the Sargalis Dairy Farm on Stoner Trail Road.
He also was a contractor and assisted in the construction of the Coliseum at the National Shrine of the North American Martyrs in Auriesville. At one time, he was employed as a carpenter foreman for D.A. Collins Construction.
Mr. Sargalis was a communicant of St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Parish in Amsterdam.
His wife, the former Genevieve Kazlauskas, whom he married July 23, 1938, died July 26, 1994.
Survivors include two sons, David Sargalis and Robert Sargalis of Johnstown; four daughters, Patricia Petteys of Johnstown, Janet Zilka of Fonda and twins Arlene Meeks of Evans Mills and Kathleen Yurkewecz of Fultonville; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, Amsterdam.
Services will be 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, followed at 10 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of St. John the Baptist, 40 Vanderveer St.
Interment will be in St. Casimir's Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Casimir's Memorial Fund or to the cemetery fund.
Edna Young
March 1, 1997
Mrs. Edna Richey Young, 94, of the New Amsterdam Apartments, died Saturday afternoon at the Albany Medical Center following a short illness.
Born Oct. 15, 1902 in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of Harry and Louise Sturm Richey and was a lifelong resident.
She was employed by several manufacturing companies in Amsterdam, and later as a beamer by the Mohawk Carpet Mills, retiring in 1960. In 1972, she passed the home health aide course at BOCES in Johnstown and practiced that profession until 1986.
Mrs. Young was instrumental in organizing a cerebral palsy class in the 1930s for Fulton and Montgomery counties, which later became affiliated with the United Cerebral Palsy Association. She also was a former Girl Scout and Brownie leader, and was a member of the Pocahantas Lodge of the Kenyetto Council.
She was a former board member of the Montgomery County Office for the Aging, a former board member of the New Amsterdam Apartments, and a member of the Hi-Lo Seniors, serving as secretary for 10 years. In 1985, she was honored as Woman of the Year by the Montgomery County Republican Club.
Mrs. Young was a communicant of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church of Amsterdam.
She married Francis Young in 1924. He died in 1960.
Survivors include a son, Francis Young Jr. of Canajoharie; a daughter, Anne Y. de Diego of Glenville; two granddaughters, four great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Betz Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, with the Rev. Robert Doxey officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery.
Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Liberty Foundation or the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
Katheryn Yates
March 3, 1997
Mrs. Katheryn D. Yates, 89 of Glen Drive, Fultonville, died this morning at the Albany County Nursing Home after being a patient for one month.
Born April 19, 1907 in Helena, she was the daughter of John and Margaret Mahoney Dawson. Mrs. Yates was a lifelong area resident and attended local schools. She was an elementary school teacher for the Fultonville school for 41 years, retiring in 1968. She was a member of the Montgomery County Teachers Association and the New York State Teachers Association.
She was a communicant of St. Cecilia's Roman Catholic Church in Fonda.
She married Gyles Yates on June 27, 1945. He died died Jan. 30, 1980.
She is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St., Fultonville, followed by a Mass of Christian at 10 a.m. at St. Cecilia's Roman Catholic Church in Fonda. Burial will be in Maple Avenue Cemetery in Fultonville.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Raymond Kercher
February 28, 1997
Raymond J. Kercher, 77, of Algonquin Drive, Wells, died Friday at his home after a long illness.
Born and educated in Buffalo, Mr. Kercher served with the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
For a number of years, he was proprietor of Jake's Bike Shop in Clarence outside of Buffalo. Later for 34 years, he was an expediter for Westinghouse in Buffalo before retiring in 1982.
Mr. Kercher lived in Wells for the past nine years.
He was a communicant of St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church.
Mr. Kercher was a life member of the Clarence Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Wells American Legion.
He married Elizabeth Skora Kercher on March 17, 1945.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Donna Kercher Holland of Amherst, Mass.; a brother, Allen Kercher of St. Cloud, Fla.; a sister, Orpha Aldrich of Wethersfield, Conn.; and two grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Ann's Church. Spring burial will take place in St. Ann's Cemetery.
There are no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, Gloversville; Wells Volunteer Ambulance Corps or to charity.
