Eugene M. "Peewee" Schaffer Sr., 49, of 7750 E. Keeney Road, Fabius, died Thursday. Born in Syracuse, he attended Fabius-Pompey School. He retired in 1989 as a heavy equipment operator for Syracuse Department of Public Works after 21 years. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Pompey, Pompey Hill Fire Department and Pompey Rod and Gun Club. He was a life member of North American Hunters Club. He was a Navy veteran, serving from 1969 to 1971. Survivors: His wife of 30 years, the former Linda L. Brown; a daughter, Angela Schaffer of Syracuse; a son, Eugene M. Jr. of Fabius; his parents, Eugene and Florence Peters Schaffer of Eaton; five sisters, Debra Scutt and Wendy Cooley, both of Cuyler, Dawn Randall of Pompey, Becky Strickland of Virgil and Brenda Nelson of London, Ky.; four brothers, Mark of Cuyler, Steven of Marcy and William and Aaron, both of Eaton. Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hartwell Funeral Home. Burial, Fabius Evergreen Cemetery. Calling hours, 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, 11 Clinton St., Tully. Edward Smart Sr

Edward Smart Sr., 90, of North Fourth Street, Fulton, died Friday. He was born in Amboy. He retired in 1972 as a roofer for Central City Roofing in Syracuse after several years and was a member of Roofers Local 195 in Syracuse. A son, Timothy, died in 1963. Survivors: His wife, the former Dorothy Vader; five daughters, Lorretta Marotts and Jessica Mattice, both of Fulton, Judy Kimball of Phoenix, Janice Mattice-Cooco of Hastings and Marietta Sellwood of Indian Trail, N.C.; eight sons, Jim Smart of Houston, Norman Smart of Oroville,  Calif., Robert Smart of Fulton, Edward Smart Jr. of Lexington, N.C., Jim and Jerry Mattice, both of Wilmington, N.C., John Mattice of Splendora,  Texas, and Joseph Mattice of Mexico; two sisters, Florence Bertolini of Jordan and Louise Simmons of Oswego; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter. Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at Allanson-Glanville-Tappan Funeral Home. Burial, Belle Isle Cemetery. Calling hours, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, 431 Main St., Phoenix. Philip N. Stitzel

Philip N. Stitzel, 68, of Franklin, Va., died June 13 from complications after a kidney transplant. Born in Painesville, Ohio, he lived in Tully five years and in the Homer and Cortland area 11 years before moving away in 1983. He graduated from Baptist Bible Institute in Cleveland, Ohio. He was postmaster in Tully, Cuyler, Amelia, Va., and Franklin, for 23 years, retiring in 1992. He was a bus driver and trainer for seven years for Carrsville Elementary School. He was a member of West Suffolk Baptist Church. A son, Benjamin Allen, died in 1960. Survivors: His wife of 50 years, the former Lois Sweet; three daughters, Janette M. Anderson and Patricia A. Blankenship, both of Cortland, and Sandra L. Smith of Weedsport; two sons, Jonathan of Hamlin and Norman of East Homer; two brothers, Richard of Burlington,  Colo., and Charles L. of Mentor, Ohio; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Memorial services: 3 p.m. June 30 in Faith Baptist Church, Route 13, Cortland. Harrell & Hill Funeral Home, Suffolk, Va., had arrangements. Helen T. Tobis

Helen T. Bryla Tobis of Auburn died Friday. She was born in Auburn. She retired as an inspector for Auburn Plastics and had also been a self-employed hairdresser. She was a member of St. Hyacinth's Church and its Altar & Rosary Society, and was a volunteer worker for the church. Her husbands, Joseph Ksiazek and Bernard Tobis, died previously. Survivors: A sister-in-law, Stella Bryla of Auburn; a niece, Monica Bryla of Auburn; a nephew, Richard Bryla of Syracuse. Services: 9 a.m. Monday in St. Hyacinth's Church, 63 Pulaski St., Auburn. Benjamin C. Arnold Jr., 65, of Myers Road, Genoa, died Sunday. Born in Auburn, he was a life resident of the town of Venice. He graduated from Moravia Central School. He was a self-employed crop farmer and truck driver. Survivors: His companion, Yvonne Weir of Groton; a daughter, Angel B. Haskell of Genoa; a son, Benjamin C. III of Mount Pleasant, Ark.; his mother, Elizabeth A. Arnold of Genoa; two brothers, Donald and Ronald, both of Genoa; six grandchildren. Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday at Shurtleff Funeral Home. Beatrice Beal-Annan

Beatrice Beal-Annan, 53, of Cordele, Ga., died Tuesday. Born in Dooly County, Ga., she lived in Syracuse more than 30 years, moving away this year. She graduated from A.S. Clark High School, attended Albany Area Technical School and graduated from Syracuse University. She was a licensed cosmetologist. She worked in several positions for the Syracuse City School District for 22 years. She was a member of New Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church, its ushers board and was a church clerk. She was a member of Lambda Kappa Mu Sorority Xi Chapter. Survivors: Two sons, Slulami Zakade Teah Beal Wulah and Andre Kareem Bael Muhammad, both of Syracuse; two stepdaughters, Mena Annan and Ivy Annan, both of Syracuse; her mother, Luella C. Beal of Cordele; three sisters, Ruby J. Beal of Syracuse, Mary L. Beal of Pembroke, Ga., and Vesta Beal Shephard of Cordele; three brothers, James Beal and Milton Boucy, both of Cordele, and Jimmy Beal of Atlanta, Ga.; her grandmother, Magnolla Beal of Georgia; three grandchildren. Services and burial: Were in Cordele. Garland Bros. Funeral Home, Syracuse, had arrangements.

Kenneth A. Davis

Kenneth A. Davis, 46, of West Genesee Street, Auburn, died Friday. Born in Auburn, he lived most of his life in Skaneateles and Lyons. He attended Skaneateles Central School. He was previously employed at Goebert Automotive Supply in Lyons and Trabold's. He was a member of Robert J. Hydon American Legion Post 239 in Skaneateles, Sons of the American Legion in Skaneateles and St. Michael's Church in Lyons. He was an Army veteran. Survivors: His wife, the former Uva Marsteiner; two daughters, Angela L. Davis of Westville and Amanda L. Davis of Lyons; his mother, Jean E. Davis of Skaneateles; three sisters, Gloria D. Post of Moravia, Carol D. McNeil and Martha L. Davis, both of Skaneateles; a brother, Dennis of Jordan; a grandson. Services: 4 p.m. Tuesday at Robert D. Gray Funeral Home. Constance H. Ruggles Kries, 81, of Bigalow Lane, Baldwinsville, died Friday at Syracuse Home Association, Baldwinsville. She was born in Newburyport, Mass., and had lived in  Washington, N.J., and Flemington, N.J., before moving to Baldwinsville in 1999. She retired in 1985 as office manager and co-owner of Kries Jewelers in Flemington after 39 years. She was a member of Flemington United Methodist Church. Survivors: Her husband of 59 years, William F.; two daughters, Barbara C. Gaulrapp of Baldwinsville and Joanne K. Harris of Hamburg; six grandchildren. Services and burial: Will be in Flemington. James P. Masi, 69, of Ovid Street, Seneca Falls, died Saturday of a heart attack. He was born in Auburn and moved to Seneca Falls in 1994. He retired in 1994 as maintenance supervisor at Auburn City Hall after 39 years. He attended First United Methodist Church in Auburn and American Legion Post 97. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. Survivors: His wife of 43 years, the former Effie Haynes; a sister, Theresa B. Gay of Auburn; a brother, Ralph Massi of Newark. He was an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, the former Kathleen Hourigan, died in 1998. He graduated from East Syracuse-Minoa High School, Onondaga Community College and State University at Albany. He was a systems engineer at Lockheed Martin for the past 18 years. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Pompei Church, where he was a Eucharistic minister, a lector and cantor. He was a member of the Holy Name Society, the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults team and had completed the Diocesan Formation for Ministry Program. Survivors: His wife of 15 years, the former Debra Rosenthal; a daughter, Jacquelyn Peterson, at home; a son, Geoffrey Peterson, at home; his parents, Donald and Mary Kaiser Peterson of Minoa; three brothers, Karl of Cicero, James of Bridgeport and Donald of Syracuse.
