Arthur Davis

March 9, 1997
Arthur Frank Davis, 71, of East State Street, Gloversville, died Sunday at Nathan Littauer Hospital.

Born in Fort Ann, Mr. Davis moved to Gloversville in 1988. He resided at Mountain View II of the Lexington Center, where he was also employed.

There are no known immediate survivors.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave. Spring burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lexington Center of Gloversville.

Ella Hyde

March 10, 1997
Mrs. Ella Spraker Hyde, 89, of Pleasant Street, Gloversville, died Monday at Nathan Littauer Hospital.

A lifelong Gloversville resident, Mrs. Hyde was a graduate of Gloversville High School and attended Gloversville Business School.

She was of the Methodist faith.

Her husband, Clifford Hyde, died in 1981.

Survivors include a daughter, Laura Wager of Gloversville; a granddaughter and two great-grandsons.

Private graveside services will be in Fern Dale Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by Hollenbeck Funeral Home.

Elona Krause

February 27, 1997
Mrs. Elona Silbert Krause, 82, of Esperance, died Feb. 27 in Orange City, Fla., after a long illness.

Mrs. Krause was born in Hastings-on-Hudson. She was employed by the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. before moving to Gallupville, where she lived for more than 50 years.

She was active in the Gallupville Evangelical Lutheran Church and was a past president of its Women's Guild.

Mrs. Krause was also active in the Sheepman's Association.

She was married to William Krause.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Edith Balough of Esperance; two sons, William Krause of Clarksville and Richard Krause of Springfield Center; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was conducted this morning at the Gallupville Evangelical Lutheran Church, Route 443, Gallupville.

Bernice Sherman

March 10, 1997
Mrs. Bernice W. Sherman, 94, of the Fulton County Infirmary, Johnstown, died Monday.

Born in Edinburg, Mrs. Sherman was educated there and in Wheelerville. She was a lifelong area resident.

She was a member of the Johnstown Jehovah Witness Kingdom Hall.

She married Floyd Sherman on Aug. 20, 1923. He died in 1976.

Survivors include a daughter, Constance Khune of Gloversville; two sisters, Myrtle Bernard and Hope Willett, both of Johnstown; two grandsons and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at the Johnstown Jehovah Witness Kingdom Hall at a date to be announced. Burial will be in Edinburg Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville.

Memorial contributions may be made to Johnstown Jehovah Witness Kingdom Hall or Mountain Valley Hospice, Gloversville.

Marion Mates

March 10, 1997
Mrs. Marion L. Mates, 91, formerly of North Ten Broeck Street, Scotia, died Monday at the Glendale Nursing Home after a long illness.

Born in the Bronx, Mrs. Mates came to this area as a child and was a 1924 graduate of Scotia High School.

For 25 years, she was a clerical worker at the General Electric Co., Steam Turbine Division, retiring in 1967. Mrs. Mates was a member of the GE Quarter Century Club.

Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Loeber of Rome and Kaye Meyers of Delanson; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at noon Thursday at the Bekkering-Ellis Funeral Home, 1 Mohawk Ave., where a calling hour will begin at 11 a.m.

Spring burial will be in Grove Cemetery, Quaker Street.

Memorial contributions may be made to Glendale Home Pastoral Care, 59 Hetcheltown Road.

Arthur Ward

March 8, 1997
Arthur Ward, 82, of Washington Street, Gloversville, died Saturday at Nathan Littauer Hospital after a long illness.

Born and educated in Gloversville, Mr. Ward was a lifelong area resident.

During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army.

At one time, Mr. Ward worked for the General Electric Co. in Schenectady, retiring in the late 1950s due to war injuries.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and its choir.

Mr. Ward was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans, where he served as past commander.

He married Nellie Sprung Ward on Aug. 2, 1939.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a sister, Ella Nutting of Gloversville.

Funeral services were conducted this morning at the Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave. Spring burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Calling hours were conducted prior to the service at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church.

Rosario Amico

February 28, 1997
Rosario "Ross" Amico, 82, of Lorraine Avenue, Schenectady, died Feb. 28.

Born in Amsterdam, Mr. Amico moved to Schenectady in 1958.

He was employed as a painter and worked for the General Electric Co. in Schenectady. He served as a Petty Officer 3rd Class on Destroyer USS Guest during World War II in the South Pacific, Central and North Pacific and also served in the Navy during the Korean War.

Mr. Amico was a member of the Schenectady Republican Party, the G.E. Quarter Century Club, VFW Post 357 in Schenectady, a former member of Johnstown Eagles and a member of the Amsterdam Knights of Columbus.

He was a member of St. Gabriel's Church.

He was married to Angela Malatino Amico.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Annette Ciabotti and Angela Bovino, both of Schenectady; a son, Ross Anthony Amico of Churchville; a sister, Vincenza "Jennie" Greco of Amsterdam; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Noreen Marie Frances Amico.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Gabriel's Church.

Burial took place in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery in Niskayuna.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Gabriel's Memorial Church Fund, 3040 Hamburg St., Schenectady, 12303; Hospice of Schenectady, 1411 Union St., Schenectady, 12308; or to Voluntary Services at the V.A. Medical Center, 113 Holland Ave., Albany, 12208.

Emory Harris

March 9, 1997
Emory Harris, 71, of 311 County Route 137, Caroga Lake, died Sunday at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville after a short illness.

Born Oct. 8, 1925 in Eastland, Texas, he was the son of Walker K. and Stella M. Patton Harris.

He resided in Texas until World War II. He then lived in Brooklyn for about 20 years before settling in Caroga Lake in 1968.

Mr. Harris was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy.

He was employed for the Elkin Electric Supply Co. in Brooklyn for 20 years, retiring in 1968. He worked for the George Hanson Fence Co. in Gloversville for several years, then for the Town of Caroga Highway Department; and also at the same time as a bartender for the former Ackel's Bar & Grill in Gloversville until 1975.

Mr. Harris was a member of the VFW Post 2077 in Gloversville.

He married Alice F. Rogers on May 24, 1948. She died in 1966.

Survivors include a son, Wayne C. Harris of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two daughters, Alice F. Zarr of Nutley, N.J., and Elizabeth A. Harris, of Circle City, Calif.; two brothers, Wayne Harris of Aiken, S.C., and Archie Harris of Center, Texas; two sisters, Juanita Mitchell of Pasadena, Texas, and Anne Wells of Waukegan, Ill.; his companion of more than 20 years, Janice L. Brooks of Caroga Lake; two grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; one step-grandson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no calling hours or services.

Interment will take place at the convenience of the family at the North Bush Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Caroga Volunteer Fire Department.

Arrangements are by the Walrath & Bushouer Funeral Home Inc., Gloversville.
